RABBI MORDECHAI KAMENETZKY

A Purim Story - Hear Conditioning

Whoever misses the Divine hand that touched the Purim story is not looking.

And if he claims that he heard the Megilah, he probably was not listening. Imagine, the Prime Minister draws lots and decides to annihilate the entire Jewish nation. Within 24 hours he has approval from the ruler of the not-so-free-world, King Achashveirosh.

Within days, the plot is foiled, the Prime Minister is hanged and his prime target is promoted to replace him! Pretty political. Pretty

divine. Yet Hashem’s name is not mentioned once in the Megilah. Why? Of course, the Megilah is replete with allusions. There are acronyms that spell the name of Hashem, and our sages explain that every time the word “King” is mentioned in the Megilah, it has a divine reference. But, still, why does the last book of the Prophets, a Divinely inspired Megilah, have only veiled references to Heavenly intervention?

It was a sweltering August day when the Greenberg brothers entered the posh Dearborn,

car-maker, Henry Ford. “Mr. Ford,” announced Hyman Greenberg,

the eldest of the three, “we have a remarkable invention that will revolutionize the automobile industry. “ Ford looked skeptical, but their threats to offer it to the competition kept his interest piqued. “We would like to demonstrate it to you in person.” After a little cajoling, they brought Mr. Ford outside and asked him to enter a black Edsel that was parked in front of the building.

Norman Greenberg, the middle brother, opened the door of the car. “Please step inside Mr. Ford.”

“What!” shouted the tycoon, “are you crazy? It must be two hundred degrees in that car!”

“It is,” smiled the youngest brother, Max, “but

sit down, Mr. Ford, and push the white button.” Intrigued, Ford pushed the button. All of a

sudden a whoosh of freezing air started blowing from vents all around the car, and within seconds the automobile was not only comfortable, it was quite cool! “This is amazing!” exclaimed Ford. “How much do you want for the patent?”

Norman spoke up. “The price is one million dollars.” Then he paused, “And there is something else. We want the name ‘Greenberg Brothers

Air Conditioning’ to be stamped right next to the Ford logo.”

“Money is no problem,” retorted Ford, “but no way will I have a ‘Jew-name’ next to my logo on my cars!”

They haggled back and forth for a while

One and one half million dollars, and the name Greenberg would be left

brothers would be forever emblazoned upon the console of every Ford air conditioning system.

And that is why today, whenever you enter a Ford vehicle you will see those three names

panel: HI -- NORM -- MAX.The writers of the Megilah left us with a

message that would accompany us throughout our long exile. You will not always see G-d’s signature openly emblazoned upon every circumstance. However, throughout persecution and deliverance, He is always there. And just like on Purim His obvious interference is undocumented; but we know and feel it -- and

recognize it. It may not be emblazoned on the bumper; it may be hidden on the console -- but it is there. For Hashem is always speaking. All we have to do is listen.

Aliza and Craig Frank: “Parents of the Year”

Aliza and Craig Frank have been actively involved in Hillel Torah and the Jewish Community for many years. They are both native New Yorkers, moving to the Chicagoland area 15 years ago. They are dedicated to their four children, who are all Hillel Torah students, past and present; Samantha (’09), Ethan (’12), Zachary (7th grade) and Nikki (4th grade).

Aliza has served in many different roles in our Jewish community. She is a very devoted and active Hillel Torah PTA volunteer, happily serving in a variety of functions that help all of our students. Aliza has also chaired numerous Hillel Torah events, including our Ray Stein Memorial Schol-arship Dinner. She has served as past president of her Amit Tikvah chapter, and as Board Chair for the Amit “New Generation”. Aliza has co-chaired the Amit Chanukah boutique for many years, is an active member of the Congregation Kehilath Jacob Beth Samuel (KJBS), and is a Bikur Cholim volunteer. Craig is a former Board President of Hillel Torah, and current member of the Board of Directors of Hillel Torah. He also served as a former President of KJBS, and currently on the Board of KJBS. Craig is also on the Board of Camp Moshava and Hatzalah Chicago. He is a current member of the Hatzalah Chicago, a National Certified EMT, and a Member of the Chicago Chevrah Kadisha.

Aliza and Craig are proud to be a part of the Hillel Torah family and Hillel Torah greatly appreciates their concern for our future. Hillel Torah Day School is privileged to honor them as “Parents of the Year”. Zenia and Jeffrey L. Cohen: “Grandparents of the Year”

Zenia and Jeffrey Cohen have dedicated their careers to improving the lives of Jews around the world. Zenia helps to insure the future of our local Jewish community in many ways. For thirteen years, she has been a teacher at our Hillel Torah, where she teaches kindergarten and resource. She nurtures each of our children with individual attention and warmth. At JUF, she serves on various committees for the general campaign and the Women’s Division, and often chaired Israel Solidarity Days.

Jeffrey is a thirty-three year veteran of JUF and is Senior Vice President of Financial Resource Development and Co Operating Officer of Federation's Centennial Campaign. He energizes and inspires thousands of volunteers with his untiring dedication and passion, while raising tens of millions of dollars annually to support social welfare, educational and relief needs of the Jewish people in Chicago, Israel and worldwide. Jeffrey sits on the boards of many family foundations, is a member of a number of national committees for Jewish Federations of North America and was the recipient of the most prestigious Vivien Rabineau Award for Professional Excellence. Jeffrey played a major role in assisting Hillel Torah with the recent purchase of our building.

Both Zenia and Jeffrey have traveled the world observing firsthand the development of Jewish life in Israel, Eastern Europe, Cuba and Ethiopia. They are members of Kehilat Chovevei Tzion and Congregation Or Torah where Zenia served for many years as a liaison to a family for the Women's Group's Ark Basket Project. Zenia and Jeffrey are true Zionists and their children and grandchildren all share their love of Israel. Zenia and Jeffrey exist on their love for family. There is nothing more important to both of them. They are very proud of their children and grandchildren who have made Aliyah: Lisa and Nafi Balsam, Meira, Moshe, Michali, Merav and Meytal; Arica and Josh Saltzman, Danya, Jordy, Nadav and Yinon. They equally derive much pleasure from their children and grandchildren with whom they share daily life; Lanie and Ari Kellman, Maayan('19) Eliora (’23), Einav (’26) and Ravital (’26). With their generosity of spirit, and more than three decades of community support both locally and worldwide, Hillel Torah North Day School is privileged to honor Zenia and Jeffrey Cohen as “Grandparents of the Year”. Debbie Eisenstein: “Florence and Jack Feiger Memorial Service Award”

Debbie has always taken on every task given to her by Hillel Torah and the Jewish Community, and with a smile…asked for more. The word “service” is exemplified by everything that Debbie stands for, and believes in, and her actions have helped make Hillel Torah a better school for our students.

Debbie has been very active at Hillel Torah. She was the PTA Co-President from 2004 to 2006, along with running many other PTA programs. She was Secretary of the Hillel Torah Board from 2006 to 2012, and a volunteer in the 8th grade girls Chavruta program from its inception (13 years). Debbie was also the Coordinator of the Chavruta program from Fall 2009 to Spring of 2012, and Mentor to Hillel Torah’s Names, Not Numbers program. In the Community, Debbie has been the Secretary of Matan B’Seter Bambi Tzedekah, Family Liason for Or Torah’s ARK Basket Shopping, and Secretary of the Skokie Woman’s Tefilla Group.

Hillel Torah Day School, along with Debbie’s husband Dan, and their Hillel Torah children; David (’04), Sarah (’06), Avi (’09), Ben (‘11) and Yoni (’13), are privileged to honor Debbie with the “Florence and Jack Feiger Memorial Service Award”.

Soup to Nuts Your kashrus Questions. . . Answered

Written by Rabbi Dovid CohenA service of the Chicago Rabbinical Council2701 West Howard | 773-465-3900

DOUBLE OVEN

Q. I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen.May I buy double ovens and use one for fleishig andthe other for milchig? I heard that they may have acommon venting system. If this is the case, are thereany brands that are exceptions to the rule?

A. There are some double-ovens that share ventsin a manner that allows steam/vapor to travel fromone chamber to the other, and in that case you shouldnot use one chamber for meat and the other for dairy. If the oven comes with a Sabbath-mode then theagency who certifies that Sabbath-mode will probably know whetehr the two chambers sharevents in a problematic manner. Alternatively, youmight want to have an engineer or handyman investigate the particular oven you’re considering.

MEAT POT FOR DAIRY SOUP

Q. I have received several conflicting answers tothe following question, and desperately need a clarification. I have a fleishig pot which has not beenused for over 24 hours, and I cooked a pareve soupin it. Can I pour the soup into milchig dishes andthen add sour cream to the soup?

A. No. Since the pot is fleishig, one may not cooksoup in it with intention of then adding dairy itemsinto it.

GEVINAS YISROEL Q. We are learning about Gevinas Yisroel and saw

that there are two opinions as to how that is created.I would like to know what the cRc does.

A. In the times of the Mishnah, the Rabbis forbade the consumption of a non-Jew’s cheese evenif all of the ingredients are kosher. Such cheese is referred to as gevinas akum (a non-Jew’s cheese), andthere are two opinions as to what is required to

render cheese as the permitted gevinas Yisroel (aJew’s cheese): Rema YD 115:2 rules that the Jewmust see the production of the cheese, while Shach115:20 argues that the Jew must either own thecheese or participate in its production.

The cRc, and most reputable hashgachos, requirethat cheese meet both standards to be consideredkosher. Therefore, the Mashgiach will oversee thecheese-making (satisfying Rema’s requirement) andbe the one to actually put the rennet into the milk vat(satisfying Shach’s requirement).

KOSHER ALERTS

The Chicago Rabbinical Council now offerskosher consumers www.askcrc.com, to check thekosher status of hechsherim, beverages, liquors, foods, fruits & vegetables, Slurpees, and medicine. The information is accessible via a simple searchbox, and the site is optimized to work on mobile aswell as desktop devices.

The cRc is proud to announce that, as a serviceto the community, we are now certifying the coffeemachine and Icee machine at the Walgreen’s at3019 West Peterson in Chicago. Please see thesign posted on the side of the machines in the storefor specific beverage details.

Airheads Party Mix, Perfetti Van Melle USA Inc.,Erlanger KY is a bag of candies that contains taffiesand lollipops. Some of those bags mistakenly bearan unauthorized OU symbol. JEWISH HUMORItÊs funny because we say so!

Relax!Shlomo andMoishe are

stranded on anisland in the

middle of the Indian Ocean.

Shlomo is tryinghard to build a

fire, whilst Moishesits on a rock andstares out to sea.

"Why don’t youcome over here

and help mebuild this fire orthey will never

find us!"

Moishe replies,"Don’t worry. I

gave £100,000 tothe JIA last year.Shlomo, believe

me, they'll find us!"

Whatever your son’s goals in life, Fasman Yeshiva High School helps him achieve them – with multi-level instruction and a 14:1 student-teacher ratio to help him learn limudei kodesh and general studies subjects successfully and eagerly. So if you want your son to continue his Torah learning, live a Torah-centered life, and succeed in college, career and community, make FYHS his next stop.

fyhs.htc.eduMade possible through Torah Umesorah. FYHS is the preparatpry division of Hebrew Theological College,

a partner in serving our community, supported by the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation.

Shouldn’t your son’s

yeshiva prepare him for

both?
