Purim’s in the air. This holiday, perhapseven more than others, presents manyopportunities for parental teaching.

Lots of family time, lots of teachablemoments. Some ideas to share: 1) Hashem takes care of us, even when it

doesn’t feel that way. And He loves us, always.Period. In spite of our belief, at times, thatwe don’t deserve it. 2) Sometimes it can take many years to put all

the pieces of the puzzle together, pieces thatwe would never have guessed belonged to thispuzzle. 3) We’re one people, we need to take care of

each other, and look for ways to demonstratethis oneness. It feels good to give “MishloachManos” to others, to friends we know and to

friends we haven’t met yet, and to givegenerously to those in need, declaring, by ouractions, the truth that we’re all Hashem’schildren.4) The things that are invisible often matter

most, looking beneath the surface, seeing withour heart instead of our eyes to discern thebeauty within. That the world is full ofcostumes, the masks of this superficial worldwhere physical strength, armies, weapons, dictators, politicians, and money are perceivedas powerful, while the only true power,Hashem, is ignored. Hidden behind a curtaincalled nature, Hashem waits for us to reachout, pull the curtain away, and open our eyesto see His hand in the world, and in the storiesof our lives. When I was nine years old I had a verbally

abusive teacher who made it very clear that he

WRITINGMEGILLAHSBy Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob

had no regard for me as a person. That Iwasn’t smart enough or diligent enough, using words such as, “stupid” or “idiot” in hisdescriptions. I think though, that it was histone of disgust that hurt most. He madeschool an unsafe place for me. Looking backI can say that being in his class was probablythe most painful time in my life. And yet…When I really think about those days the paintends to be overshadowed by otherconsiderations. Because every night of thatschool year before falling asleep I would talkto Hashem, unburden myself, sometimes cry,and ask for His help. So, while the memoriesare still painful, they are somehow sweetenedby the knowledge that it was at this very timethat I began my life-long relationship withG-d. That Hashem wasn’t an idea, or anabstract concept. Hashem was real and Icould have a relationship with Him. I feltlistened to, cared about, held, and loved. It’sbeen forty five years since that time and even

though it took close to 40 years to forgive theteacher for his words, I know that within thatdifficult, difficult period was the hidden handof Hashem. And it was holding mine. This is perhaps one chapter in my personal

Megillah. Another would be the story of howmy wife and I met, with all the details thatneeded to fall into place, for that to happen. Athird might tell the stories of my parents whomiraculously survived the Holocaust. We allhave Megillahs to write. We need to follow Esther’s and Mordechai’s

lead, connect the dots, fit in the pieces of thepuzzle as best we can, write our own Megillah, and pass it down to our children andgrandchildren to write their own chapters.

Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in privatepractice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topicsrelating to psychology, relationships, parent-ing, education, and Jewish thought.

KIWI BERRIES

Q. What is the bracha onkiwi berries?

A. The bracha rishonah isborei pri ha’eitz.

KNIFE TO CUT A BAGEL

Q. Can I use the knife in myoffice’s kitchen to cut a bagel?I have no idea if the knife waspreviously used by one of thenon-Jews to cut somethingnon-kosher.

A. If the bagel is cold andthe knife is clean, the bagelcut with that knife will remainkosher even if the knife hadpreviously been used to cuthot non-kosher foods.Accordingly, one might thinkthat they could cut their bagelwith the knife. However, dueto the possible mistakes thatmay occur, Rema (OC 451:1and YD 121:5 & 7) cites acustom to not use non-kosherutensils in this manner on anongoing basis. This meansthat if occasionally (i.e. lessthan once a month) you needto cut a bagel or other coldfood with the clean non-kosher knife you’d be allowedto, but you shouldn’t make it aregular practice to do so.

MALT IN YOSHON PRODUCTS

Q.I read that it is debatable

whether people who aremachmir on yoshon need tobe concerned about malt putinto flour. I’m just trying tounderstand what is debatedbefore I decide what to domyself. Is it for sure batel? Isit maybe not batel becausechodosh a davar sheyesh lo matirim(something which willeventually become permitted– in this case, after Pesach –and therefore not eligible forbitul)?

A. A very small amount ofmalt is put into flour and it isalmost always batel b’shishim.Although you are correct thata davar sheyesh lo matirim cannotbe batel, that is limited to amixture of min b’mino (i.e. likeitems) and does not apply to amixture of malt and flour (seeShulchan Aruch YD 102:1). Itis also noteworthy that due tothe length of the maltingprocess, chodosh malt does notcome to market until very latein the “yoshon season”.Accordingly, many peoplewho are particular to only eatyoshon are lenient and willconsume flour without firstascertaining if the malt ischodosh. Whether you shouldchoose to follow this ruling issomething that you shoulddiscuss with your own Rabbi.
