Lots of good things to report this month. Our first general membership meeting of 2013 was a potluck with an excellent variety of delicious choices. Perhaps the potlucks are getting a bit competitive? It’s all good for us. Also, attendance was once again surprisingly large– a testimony to our stalwart members who brave a dark, cold January evening to share some time together. Remember last year’s memorable Janu- ary meeting with bitter cold, snow and winds? Vice Commodore Jim Ghinazzi is working on future pro- grams so please don’t be shy about stepping up and volun- teering to share your stories...or to host a meeting. Our January program was presented by yours truly and was a preview of the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco later this summer. We will try to keep you posted on all the events leading up to the final race. For those of you who missed the presentation, go online and check our www.youtube.com and search for the AmericasCup Channel. You will find some amazing videos of these super-fast catamarans. As an intro- duction and teaser of what’s to come, you might want to watch the following viedo that summarizes the events in 2012: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSAAQOWSvul. Speaking of sailing, one of the actions taken by your Board at our first 2013 board meeting was the establishment of an offi- cial LIYC Sailing Program Chair. The purpose is to bolster our sail-oriented yacht club activities creating more fun and participation for all. I’m happy to report Captain Russ Johnson has accepted that position for 2013. He’s already working on calendaring activities including the second Annu- al Lopez Classic Race, aka, the Lopez Cup, which will be officially sanctioned by the LIYC this year. Other board actions included authorization to purchase audio- visual equipment including our own, larger screen, projector, powered speaker and microphone. Continued on page 3

COMMODORE’S CORNER, continued from cover page Our Rear Commodore (and Mr. Magmatic) Doug Cram has taken on that project.  Also, the Board is looking for feedback and interest from members in buying LIYC hats, tshirts, etc.  Commodore Emeritus Dave Welker suggest we could best accomplish that through making them available online so the club doesn’t have to buy inventory and hope to sell them all.  More to come on that.  The Board also approved a budget for cruise hosts of $30 per cruise.  Our cruise hosts did some overthetop work in 2012 to add to the fun of our cruises and this will help defray outofpocket expenses.  (Did you know we already have a $20 budget for meeting hosts?)  And, no, that money is not supposed to be used to buy your Commodore a martini.  Please use your own money for that.

Finally, mark your calendar for June 2123, 2013, for the Commodore’s Cruise to Port Browning, Pender Island, B.C.  Based on the yacht club’s prior visits and ongoing enhancements at the marina...it’s going to be another epic experience.  Let’s Go!

WASHINGTON BECOMES THE FIRST STATE TO PHASE‐OUT COPPER BOTTOM PAINT

With the passage of House Bill SB 5436 late in 2012, Washington has become the first state to require the phasing out of anA‐fouling boBom paint containing copper for recreaAonal boats.  Copper‐based boBom paints on boats have long been a source of contaminaAon in waterways and for marine life.

Although the new restricAons will not be enforced for several years, there are clean boBom paint alterna‐Aves currently on the market.  But do they work?  Here’s what actual users had to say about two of them:

Smart Solu*on by Sea Hawk:  The owner of a Sea Sport 24 applied Smart SoluAon to 100% of the hull in June 2011.  In November 2011, it was hauled and pressure washed.  In June of 2012, it went back in the wa‐ter at Elliot Bay Marina, then hauled again in  October of 2012 and pressure washed.  “Performance on areas with no direct sunlight has been excellent.  Areas with direct sunlight has soZ growth only.  This at the wa‐terline was easily removed with pressure washing.  No barnacles anywhere.”

The operator of a Bay Patrol 26‐foot aluminum HewescraZ power boat applied Smart SoluAon to the hull in July of 2010 and removed in October 2011 (15 months).  At the Ame of removal, the paint was sAll perform‐ing well.  Except for some minor brushing at the waterline, no cleaning of the hull was done throughout the 15 month period.  The owner commented, “It performed excellent(ly).  I only removed Smart SoluAon to try the new product by Pe^t.  The Smart SoluAon required a liBle brushing just at the waterline.”

Ul*ma ECO by Pe8t:   By Happy Boater from Maryland,  “This is proof a product can be green and extreme‐ly effecAve!  A completely copper free product that works as well if not beBer than tradiAonal boBom paint.  Pe^t hit a home run with this one.”

This from jacobladder from Delaware, “I used this last year on my pontoon boat.  It is the most effecAve paint I’ve used in many years.  The boBom came out spotless, no barnacles, no slime.  I’ll use it again next year.”

Editor’s Note:  Both these paints can be obtained at Islands Marine Center (IMC) on Lopez.
