DATA for ESY CONSIDERATION
Reminder that if you are considering ESY for a student, you need
to take data on goals from before and after a break from
school. You can use end of year/beginning of the year data to
determine ESY or plan to take before and after the upcoming
Winter Break. To be eligible for ESY, a student is required to have
significant regression and longer recoupment than typical
students. Predictive Factors may also be considered
(for example: student takes multiple repetitions to learn a skill and
shows inconsistent retention of skills). A disability is not enough to
be eligible for ESY (ie: Autism) – learning trajectories need to be
considered. If the team determines that a student is eligible for
ESY, the predictive factors and data must be included in the
IEP. All students could benefit from ESY but not all of them
qualify. Contact your Sped Partner with questions.

K INDERGARTEN T RANSITION
Preschool special education service providers are beginning to set up kindergarten transition meetings for students with IEPs who will attend kindergarten in the fall and may need a center placement. Teams have been asked to streamline meetings so that the majority of meetings occur on a single day (before, during, and after school) to limit the interruption in services for students. Preschool service providers will be contacting elementary learning specialists to set up transition meetings. Please support elementary teams in attending transition meetings. The following dates are set aside for preschool to kindergarten transition meetings:
Other Dates may be scheduled as necessary.
If you have questions, please contact Sarah Weber or Lynea Pearson.

IEP P ROCEDURAL GUIDEANCE
Did you know?
“While academic progress may indicate a child's need for special education services, academic progress alone is not the determinative factor. Districts should draw upon information from a variety of sources in order to make an eligibility determination.” 34 CFR 300.306(c)(1); G. "J." D. v. Wissahickon Sch. Dist., 56 IDELR 294 (E.D. Pa. 2011); and Lauren G. v. West Chester Area Sch. Dist., 60 IDELR 4 (E.D. Pa. 2012).
Also…
“… ‘educational performance’ is more than just academics and there is nothing in IDEA or its legislative history that supports the conclusion that “educational performance” is limited only to performance that is graded.” Mr. I v. Maine Sch. Admin. Dist. No. 55, 47 IDELR 121, 480 F.3d 1 (1st Cir. 2007).
Examples of Educational Impact Include:
Failing grades and/or sudden changes in grades
Inability to pass from grade to grade, or to pass several academic courses in a given year
Work samples that show inability to complete tasks
Inability to attend, concentrate, follow class discussions and/or participate appropriately in educational activities
Absences from class due to interfering behaviors/suspensions
Difficulties with Executive Functioning
Difficulties with social interactions that impact classroom functioning
Survey Question: If a student is testing on grade level academically, but is found eligible for Special Education due to educational impact, who should provide the specially designed instruction?

It’s time to start thinking about transition. If you have students with ATAT equipment transitioning from preschool to
Kindergarten, elementary to middle, or middle to high school please be aware of
this important information:
Does the student have ATAT equipment?
If YES: Put a plan in place for transition of the equipment. Discuss and
document the plan during the transition meeting.
a. The sending school is responsible for developing a plan to get ATAT
equipment to the receiving school.
b. Software/apps installed on school-owned laptops/ iPads must be
uninstalled and sent with student.
c. iPads or Chromebooks must be secured either at student’s home or at
the receiving school over the summer. They cannot be returned to ATAT
for safekeeping.
If NO: What technology is the student using? You must consider the following:
a. Does the receiving school have that same technology available?
b. Can the family supply technology needed, i.e., an iPad at home that can
also be used at school? Please ask parents this question before referring
to ATAT.
c. If the answer to both a and b is NO, and if the student has been seen by
ATAT, we can usually provide any needed equipment. If the student has
not been seen by ATAT, you should start the referral process.

SED I NFORMATION AND HAPPENINGS !
The SED Program Quality Indicators are ready!
Professional Development: SED Teams Only
Got Behavior? Dig into the three articles below that provide deeper insight into working more productively with students who are struggling with escalating behaviors. Remember, having a thoughtful, school-wide system is a major key to success and includes explicitly teaching students expected behaviors, systemically reinforcing those same positive behaviors when demonstrated, and consistently responding when negative behaviors arise.

Special Education assessments are moving towards online administration and scoring. This survey will help with planning for the 2018-19 school year and how quickly we move to online as a district.
Please complete by Friday, Feb. 16th.
The assessments that are available to be administered online include KTEA, CELF-5, PPVT/EVT, WISC, WIPPSI, BASC, BOT, Sensory Profile, Sensory Processing Measure (SPM), Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), CASL-2, EDDT. To administer assessments online, 2 iPads are needed (Practitioner and client). The Practitioner iPad needs to have current technology while the client iPad can be an older version. Three groups have been piloting the online assessments this year and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Your input is greatly appreciated!

Professional Learning Opportunities
In order to support educators in their professional learning, the District Special Education Office encourages special education staff to participate in professional development. Special Education is no longer able to provide sub days for professional learning. Please coordinate with your building administration to allow for those opportunities.
Remember, your building principal must approve any leave that takes you out of your regularly assigned duties.
SED Identification Training
More than just the BASC! 90 minute training on the evaluation process to be used when a Serious Emotional Disability is suspected for Initial Evaluations and Re-evaluations. This class is open to all PreK-12 Special Education providers and administrators. We will discuss the process from beginning to end and review case-study SED evaluations. Taught by Erin Frank.
