Greetings Sorors!

What better way to commemorate Black History Month than by reflecting on the recent Alpha Chapter Centennial Celebration which was entitled, “Return to Our Roots.” The blended history and eyewitness accounts of our National Founders’ Day Celebration attracted 2000 sorors from around the country and the International communities. Ten sorors from Zeta Chi Omega participated in this historic moment in time.

We worshipped at Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel (Cramton Auditorium) and listened to words from Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, Pastor, The Abyssinian Baptist Church, and President, The State University of New York College at Old Westbury, New York, NY. Sorors attended “A KAptured Century” Centennial Celebration and Tea Party hosted by Alpha Chapter at the Blackburn Center. Speaking of history, we met the oldest living Alpha Chapter Member, Diamond Soror Hazel Hanesworth-Young, who is 103. Soror Hanesworth-Young was initiated in Alpha Chapter in 1922. There were library dedications and markers placed on the campus.

The culminating event was the Blessing of the Pilgrimage and dedication of historical markers. So you see, Sorors, growth is good, from the first chapter in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Chapter, we now stand strong with over 970 chapters throughout the country and overseas. This is history in making.

The greatness of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is largely due to the many sorors who are committed to the common cause of being Supreme in Service. We have carried this mantra for over one hundred years. As we commemorate Black History Month, remember every soror who entered this great sisterhood has made the ultimate commitment to be of service to all mankind. This in itself is history. One hundred years is a significant milestone in history. Sorors, we will never forget from whence we have come!

Yours in service,

Joyce Henderson

Anti-Basileus Report

Sorors, as our Platform III description states, within the core of the black family, the black male faces potentially discour-aging challenges. Did you know that in Maryland, 46 percent of black male teenagers dropped out during the 2003-04 school year, compared with 22 percent of white males? In Virginia, 47 percent dropped out, compared with 27 percent of white male students, and in the District, the dropout rate for black males was 51 percent, compared with 5 percent of white males. Experts said the implications are stark: Dropouts struggle to find good jobs; they become teen fathers, get arrested and abuse drugs and alcohol at a much higher rate than that of their counterparts who graduate from high school. (Washington Post, June 15, 2007)

Platform III – The Economic Growth of the Black Family committee will have its first meeting on February 2nd at 9:00 am at the Carver Center (prior to chapter meeting) to discuss how Zeta Chi Omega can make a difference.

Chapter Repast

Sorors, we have had some wonderful meals for our repast in the last few years. Unfortunately, most of them have been over budget. In November 2007, the chapter voted to have the hostess amount lowered to $2,000 (or $200 a month) from $3,000 (or $300). At $300 a month it was difficult to find a caterer who could supply the food for 200 people. Soror Tanisha Bynum-Frazier and her honey-do Richard’s restaurant, Georgie Porgie’s, have generously provided us with refreshments for our repast at a dis-count for the last few months. Additionally, they provided refreshments for our January repast at a significant discount. We can no longer have the lavish repasts of the past every month. It is my plan to provide light refreshments and beverages for most meetings and have a special repast in March to celebrate Founders’ Day, in September to start the chapter year and in December as we celebrate the holidays and installation of new officers.

We are a 200+ chapter with a limited budget. Sorors, please plan accordingly when attending chapter meeting. Enjoy a full break-fast at home and then arrive at the chapter meeting ready to enjoy light refreshments. Or plan on fellowship with sorors after the meeting and enjoy a big lunch.

If you have some ideas or suggestions as to how we can provide a more lavish repast within our current budget constraints, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 703-569-1996 or [email protected].

Our Celebrations…

• Yvette Hurst on her engagement.

• Christina Rouse on her engagement.

Our Sorrows and Sympathies…

• Soror Rozena Killen-Johnson on the death of her father-in-law.

• Soror Barbara Evans on the death of her husband, Colonel (Retired) Herb Evans.

• Soror Julia Pryor on the death of her sister, Mrs. Ledonia C. Hill.

• Soror Jeanne Melvin- Martin lost her godfather, Bishop Ozro T. Jones, Jr.

• Soror Janice Evans on the death of her brother-in-law, Mr. Isadore Monroe.

Please keep our sorors and their families in your prayers.

“Engaging Sorors Personally”

At the January general body meeting the Membership Committee introduced the Membership Theme for the year “Engaging Sorors Personally.” Efforts this year will focus on retaining and increasing membership through written and personal contact with active and inactive sorors. To kickoff off the New Year we asked sorors in attendance to share interesting facts about themselves. Did you know:

Soror Melanie Pearson was the first black military ball queen at VA Tech?

Soror Rhonda Luss is a certified foster parent?

Soror Michele Crawley Taylor was crowned Miss NCA&T 1989-1990?

If you thought the January General Body meeting was exciting, just wait and see what the Membership Committee has in STORE for you at the February meeting.

Soror Patricia has been a member of Zeta Chi Omega for the past 30 years. Soror Patricia first joined our beloved sisterhood as a member of the Epsilon Chapter which is a City Chapter in Boston, Massachusetts. She served as the Basileus of this chapter and Anti-Basileus of Psi Omega which is also located in Boston. Her hobbies/interests include: traveling, playing golf, music, (she likes to sing and play the piano), reading, e-mailing friends (who are located all over the world), doing cross word puzzles, and cooking healthy foods. Soror Patricia is a retired elementary school teacher. She has taught in both Boston and Alaska. There will be sixteen (16) young ladies presented to society on April 19, 2008 at the Sheraton National. They had their first rehearsal on Jan. 12th with directresses Valerie Flournoy, Alyssa Watkins-Dove and Michele Crawley Taylor. They also had their ads/patrons reviewed and their pictures taken for the Souvenir Journal. On Saturday, Jan. 19th, the annual retreat was held. The presenters for the retreat were members of Zeta Chi Omega Chapter. The topics were on financial aid, etiquette and health issues. The retreat was very informative. The prospective debs turned in their ads and patrons for the Souvenir Journal on Jan. 26th.

The next meeting of the Committee will be Feb. 12, 2008 at 7:00pm at the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center.

Spirit and Inspiration

A.S.A.P.

(always say a prayer)

There’s work to do,deadlines to meet, You’ve got no time to spare, but as you hurry and scurry,

always say a prayer.

In the midst of family chaos,”quality time” is rare. Do your best; let God do the rest,

always say a prayer.

It may seem like your worries are more than you can bear. Slow down and take a breather—

always say a prayer.

God knows how stressful life is: He wants to ease our cares, and He’ll respond a.s.a.p.—

always say a prayer
