President’s Message
Fellow members,
We were pleased to see the overwhelming
consensus for our phase 2 Capital projects. I’m
of the belief that if we stand still, we are moving
backward. Thanks so much for your confidence in this Board and
our planned improvements to the Course, Pool and our much
needed infrastructure repairs.
2019 was a banner year for the Club and we look to getting even
better in 2020. We will host the Pittsburgh Open in July and we
look forward to showing off all of our new changes. We will have
a full slate of events for our 100th Anniversary including a special
Gala that will be something like we’ve never seen at SHCC. Look
for a listing of events and dates on the back cover of this
newsletter.
It’s been a pleasure serving in the role of President in 2019 and
we look forward to seeing the Board evolve with new and fresh
ideas in 2020. Please send in your ballots for our 6 candidates
and the recommended By Law changes.
Best Regards,
Christopher S Blass

South Hills Country Club
December 2019 Page 3
Dear Members:
December will be a particularly busy month at
South Hills Country Club. Plans are being
finalized for a full calendar of Member events
including the Children’s Christmas Party, Holiday Luncheon,
Candlelight Buffet and the annual Holiday Bash. December is also
our most active month of the year for private events, and we are
excited to host so many Members and their guests for holiday
celebrations.
While all this activity is taking place at the Club, we will be
working on the golf course sand trap project and making plans
for other capital projects that will be scheduled during the first
quarter of 2020. The Club will close during the first two weeks of
January. When we re-open on January 15th, we hope to have new
artwork and furniture in the Lobby, new furniture in the Tavern,
and new carpet in the Sam Parks Grille. Other projects scheduled
for January through March include repainting of the Ballroom,
replacement of Ballroom ceiling tiles, replacement of the flat roof
over the kitchen and Dining Room, installation of a new net along
the practice range and construction of a new walk-in cooler to
service the upstairs kitchen.
We are grateful for our Members’ usage and support of the Club,
which makes it possible to continuously improve our facilities.
Thanks to all Members, guests and Club staff who made 2019 a
great year at South Hills Country Club.
Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year!
Sincerely,
Frank S. Hamschin

From the Ladies’ Tee
Happy Holidays everyone!
Mrs. Claus (that’s me) and her little elves (Mary Jo Simon, Leslie Barton,
Debby Recker, Vicky Thatcher, Serena Gozion, Val Kenny, Suzan Dunn,
Maureen Jacovino and Sue Pasqual) have been busy planning for next
season already! It seems so far away, but April will be here before we
know it.
• Mary Jo and Leslie are working with the Pro Shop staff on our
Schedule of Play for 2020
• Serena led a committee on an in-depth analysis of each hole and its
corresponding handicap for the red tees (can you guess the #1
handicap hole?)
• Maureen is busy posting birthdays on Facebook
• Golf has a new World Handicap System set to debut in 2020…
exciting changes to come!
• Our ladies’ locker room is on the list of Capital Improvements to be
made at SHCC
• WGA will participate in a club-wide Opening Day event, in addition
to having our own “regular” Opening Day
• SHCC turns 100 next year! WGA will participate in the many exciting
festivities being scheduled
• Keep in touch during the off-season by using CLUBSTER…let’s keep
the chatter going!
I wish you all a very HAPPY and HEALTHY holiday season!
Sincerely,
Amy Baloh

Winter Preparations:
With November passing as quickly as it came, the Grounds department has concluded final course preparations for the winter. We have successfully completed the winterization of our irrigation system, applied snow mold fungicide to our greens, tees, approaches, fairways along with one last deep tine aerification to our putting surfaces. We will be applying periodic light topdressing to the greens through out the winter as the weather dictates. Sand topdressing is a useful tool to help insulate the crown of the turfgrass plant during periods of extreme cold and will also push us to our goal of firmer putting surfaces in the spring.
Bunker Renovation:
By the time this newsletter reaches the membership we will be halfway through our bunker renovation project. The goal is to be finished by December 15th, weather dependent. All new bunkers being installed will have a herringbone drainage pattern, two inches of gravel, Better Billy Bunker liner, and eight inches of sand compacted to six inches. The drainage and liners installed in these traps will greatly reduce washouts, eliminate the need to pump water out of the bunkers and most importantly reduce labor/maintenance costs. When all is said and done, twelve new bunkers will be constructed replacing the eleven old bunkers on holes 5, 16 and 17.
Ongoing Winter Work:
In addition to our tree management program, the Grounds department has multiple projects started and scheduled throughout the winter. We have successfully squared the forward and back tee boxes on hole 6. Drainage projects have begun and will continue. We are hopeful we can install drainage to 14 fairway, 3 green surround, 11 green surround, 7 green surround, 18 rough and 16 rough this winter. By increasing our drainage inputs and our tree management program, we have successfully reduced the amount of problematic wet areas throughout the property.
Contrary to popular belief, the winter months are incredibly busy for a golf course maintenance department. Our goal is to have all projects buttoned up, and the course back in shape for the start of the spring golf season. As always, if anyone has questions about ongoing course work, please feel free to contact me.
Best Regards, Bryan Flaherty, Golf Course Superintendent

Winter Activities that can Help you Improve your Golf Game Improving and maintaining your skill level of golf is a continuous process. It is hard to maintain those skills when we have a six to eight-month golf season. Even professional golfers look for different ways to improve and maintain their game during the off season. Here are some activities you can try to improve your golf game during the winter months.
Yoga – Practicing yoga can bring a lot of benefits to your golf game. It will make you more flexible and improve your range of motion. Your swing will become more fluid. Yoga can also make your core muscles stronger which will boost the power of your swing. Yoga also involves a lot of stretching, which you need to avoid common golf injuries.
Running - Running will improve your endurance and cardiovascular stamina to help maintain your performance throughout all 18 holes. Running will also strengthen your legs, which is something that is commonly overlooked in training for golf. Generating strength through your legs will add power to your swing. A combination of running and yoga during the winter would be great way to prepare for the start of the 2020 golf season.
Weight Training – Have you ever seen a bulky golfer? They may be rare, but a lot of golfers have toned muscles. Weight training for golf is not aimed at building big muscles. Focus in making the muscles in your arms, core and legs stronger, so you will have a powerful swing without exerting a lot of effort. Racquetball can be enjoyed inside during the harsh winter months. If you can hit a ball moving at 90 miles per hour, then you will surely have the confidence in hitting a stationary ball. The motions of a racquetball will also help you be comfortable in utilizing your hips and legs in generating power for your golf swing. Please contact Golf Professionals at South Hills Country Club for further information.
