Fellow members:
As we roll into May and begin to enjoy the
beauty of spring, I just wanted to thank each
and every one of you for choosing to make
South Hills Country Club your own. I’ve received numerous
suggestions over the last month on how to improve your
experiences here (Just One Thing initiative) and thank all of
you for taking the time to express your thoughts. Keep
them coming!
As promised, I hope everyone had a chance to see the
financials as it relates to the three capital projects that have
been finished or are finishing up. This type of transparency
is necessary to make sure your trust in the Board continues
going forward. I will be adding a mid-year summary of
revenue and expenses in June or July so everyone can see
the health of the Club’s overall financial condition.
As we move into summer, please invite your friends,
colleagues and neighbors to join you at South Hills. Our
Club always look better when it’s buzzing with activity. The
100 year celebrations are coming into focus and we’ve got
an incredible amount of activity to set the “stage” for
2020. This Club’s rich history will be on display for all to
see. New logo designs are being reviewed, summer concerts
are being readied, and a slew of new landscape designs will
be sure to catch your attention as we ring in 100 years at
South Hills Country Club.
Stay tuned and enjoy your Club!

President’s Message
May 2019 Page 3
April was a great month at South Hills Country Club. The pleasant weather produced a strong start to the golf season and generated a lot of activity in our food and beverage operations. The Club also welcomed several new Members in April and we received a significant number of inquiries from
other families who are interested in membership. The following bullet points provide updates on clubhouse projects and summarize a few of our top priorities for May: • We are pleased to welcome Chelsea Yeager as
Private Events Director. Chelsea has an extensive background in event planning and F&B operations including management experience at The Commoner, Seviche and Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
• The Dining Room project is coming together nicely. New carpet will be installed the week of April 29 – May 3. The ceiling lighting package and wall sconces will be in place the second week of May. Large screen smart televisions and speakers for the audio system will be installed by late May. Window shades and valances have been ordered and will be installed in 4-6 weeks. The hard wood tables for dining and events will be delivered in 8-10 weeks.
• Painting of the Club lobby will be completed in the evening during the week of April 29 – May 3. New carpet for this area will be installed the week of May 6 – 10. Plans are being finalized for furnishings and artwork. The painters will paint the Lower Level Corridor, Tavern and Upper Tee the week of May 6 – 10, with carpet installation scheduled for May 13 – 17.
• The Club Board of Governors recently reviewed several options for a new Club logo that will have variations to celebrate our 100th anniversary in 2020. The new designs are excellent, and we look forward to sharing more details next month.
• Chef John Miniajlo is finalizing plans for the new ala carte menu, which will be implemented Saturday, May 25th. We will also have several new cocktails and soft drinks on the beverage menu this summer.
It is a great time of the year at South Hills Country Club. We hope to see you soon and often! Sincerely, Frank S. Hamschin, General Manager

Police Appreciation Day 2019 South Hills Country Club has been honored to host local police officers during our annual Police Appreciation Day for the past ten years. On this day, roughly 148 officers enjoy a day of golf and dining at one of the South Hills’ premier country clubs. Because of the generous donations of the Members of the club and the surrounding communities, the officers enjoy the entire day free of charge. The officers continue to be most appreciative. On Monday, July 1, 2019, South Hills Country Club will celebrate the 11th Anniversary by again hosting officers from around the community to honor the many men and women who pledge to serve and protect. This year’s Police Appreciation Day will again be a “Thank You Blue” theme to show the officers our continuing support. The Police Appreciation Day 2019 Committee is reaching out to the SHCC members and the surrounding community to ask for your continuing financial support to make this Appreciation Day as special and as memorable as it has been in previous years. Below is a link the sponsorship form for your consideration. Please complete and return to South Hills Country Club. Thank you in advance for your generous support. View the Sponsor Form

From the Ladies’ Tee
WGA’s Opening Night Kickoff Party was a big success on Tuesday April 16th. We had close to 50 ladies come and enjoy Craig’s cocktail specials: Blueberry Mojitos and Hypnotic Martinis. Chef John and his staff satisfied our taste buds (and bellies) with food stations and desserts to die for! Special thanks to Barb Sachko for once again helping us to host a wonderful event. I must also give a shout out to our Golf Shop pros Tony and Brian for offering us some nice discounts on their merchandise. Welcome to new Golf Shop Manager Jeff. Macy’s, Lancome, Adidas and City of Bridges Chiropractic also deserve big thanks for participating. Congratulations to door prize winners Eda Dean (lesson with Tony), Karen Ubinger (lesson with Brian) and Kathy Backa ($100 Macy’s Gift Card). WGA members who deserve recognition for “working” that night include Karen Ubinger (Invitational), Terry Sands (Birdies/Chip-ins/Ringers), Mary Jo Simon (door prize tickets, Clubster), Linda Krause (WGA Booklets), Marica Veith (photos), Val Kenny (USGA rules) and Sue Pasqual (photo slideshow). Ladies’ Opening Day was played April 23rd as a Vegas Scramble. We had 24 golfers, many of whom stayed for lunch and our WGA Spring Meeting following golf. The weather was beautiful! Congratulations to first place winners Beth Smith, Kathy Dudro, and Sue Pasqual. Skill prizes went to Betsy Fluhme (Closest to Pin #4), Beth Smith (Longest Drive #10) and Vicky Thatcher (Longest Putt #18). Upcoming May Events include a full schedule of team matches for our SHCC Western Team, Hole 9 Yards Kickoff May 2, WGA Presidents Cup on May 14, and WGA N.O.S.E. Sunday Event May 19. Happy Memorial Day on the 27th! Respectfully submitted, Amy Baloh, WGA President ‘19

SHCC Caddie Program
A new golf season is upon us. A new set of caddies is in training. Cooperation and support from the membership is the key to South Hills Country Club retaining a strong caddie program. Among comparable clubs, South Hills has one of if not “the best” caddie program in the region. Caddies are always available on weekend and holiday mornings. If you would like a caddie at other times, please call the Pro Shop and let them know. Adding a fore caddie when you bring guests to the club significantly enhances the adventure for your guests. Less time chasing down errant shots and raking traps, means more time enjoying the course. The South Hills caddies are well trained to improve the experience for you and your guests. With the success of the program, we are looking to expand the current caddie use beyond the weekend and holiday use. Joe Zinchini, the caddie master at South Hills, has added Wednesday and Friday to the days when caddies will be available. Both carry caddies and fore caddies will be available. Some items of note on the caddie program: • On weekend mornings, walkers are required to use a caddie
and groups with carts are required to take a fore caddie if one is available.
• Suggested caddie fees are $40 per loop plus a tip. Experienced caddies typically receive a higher tip.
• Members can be advanced cash for caddie payments from the caddie master or the Pro Shop.
• All caddies are independent contractors and keep all payment.
• Caddie training is an ongoing project. Please provide tips and assistance to help the caddie improve.
• At the completion of a round, please provide feedback to the Pro Shop of the caddie’s performance.

It is with great pride that we invite you to nominate qualifying students to receive the ninth annual George Benson Scholarship. Students must maintain an above average GPA per term to continue receiving the scholarship. The scholarship’s value is currently up to $2,000 annually with a maximum of $8,000 (over 4 years). ABOUT GEORGE BENSON: George was a distinguished graduate of Brentwood High School and Duke University, a Captain in the Air Force, a successful South Hills businessman and an inspiration to those whose lives he touched. But many will remember him most for his lifelong passion for the game of golf. His many amateur titles included the West Penn Amateur and more than 20 club championships in the US and England. Always a competitor, George courageously fought an (8) eight year battle with cancer, and won his final club championship in the midst of the battle in 2004. Grounds Update
Over the past month the Grounds Department has been busy finalizing winter projects, completing our aerification practices, and making precisely timed chemical applications to help set us up for success this playing season. With winter work out of the way, the Grounds department will look to dive into the detail work around the club property.
Applications Pre/Post Emergent Herbicides: Herbicide applications have been made to our native areas. We apply pre-emergent along with a post-emergent herbicides to help clean up weeds left over from the fall. The grounds departments strategy for the native areas this season will be to mow them early in the season (the start of June) then reapply pre/post emergent herbicides. The native areas will then be left to grow, and spot treated for weeds as needed. It is our hope that applying two different herbicide applications along with increased mowing will result in uniform looking native areas. Soil Amendments: The grounds department can utilize rainfall during the season to apply our soil amendments. Some products we use to condition are soils are gypsum (calcium), and potash (potassium). We also make soil applications with our sprayers (manganese, magnesium, humic acid, calcium) in order to free up additional nutrients that are currently unavailable in the soil structure. We test our soils throughout the season and amend them as needed.
Flowers With the nighttime temperatures rising, we have begun the installation of our annual flowers. All our annuals this season were purchased from Donati’s Florist in Bethel Park. We are looking to bring in new colors and plants this year to update our dated landscape areas. With Memorial Day right around the corner, the Grounds Department has also begun getting the pool area back into shape for the upcoming swimming season. We are committed to keeping the landscape at the pool and throughout the property high on our priority list and will strive to keep them in the best possible conditions.
USGA agronomist Elliott Dowling will be on property Wednesday May 22nd to perform our annual turf advisory service. This visit gives the club an update on conditions and offers suggestions on improvements. If anyone would like to discuss the details of his report, I would be glad to discuss them with you. Best Regards, Bryan Flaherty, Golf Course Superintendent
