CorbionâPuracâhasâdevelopedâaâproprietary process to produce 2,5-Furandicarboxylicâacidâ(FDCA)âfrom renewable resources with a reduced carbon footprint. FDCAâhasâtheâpotentialâtoâreplace purified terephthalic acidâ(PTA)âinâaâvarietyâofâapplications.âForâinstance,âFDCAâcanâbeâpolymerizedâinto polyethylene furanoate (PEF)âmakingâuseâofâexistingâpolyester infrastructure. PEFâgivesâimprovedâfinishedâproduct performance, due to better barrier, thermal and mechanical properties when compared to PET.âAtâtheâsameâtime, it improves packagingâsustainability, since PEFâproducedâfromâFDCAâisâ100%âbiobasedâwhen biobased monoethylene glycolâ(MEG)âisâused.
Introducing FDCA
FDCAâisânotâaâdirectâreplacementâforâPTA,âasâPEFâisânotâaâdirectâreplacementâforâPETâsinceâtheirâchemicalâstructuresâareâslightlyâdifferent.âHowever,âtheyâareâsufficientlyâsimilarâtoâallowâFDCAâtoâbeâusedâinâcombinationâwithâMEGâinâexistingâPETâpolymerizationâplantsâ,âmakingâFDCAâanâinfrastructureâdrop-in.âInâaâsimilarâmanner,âPEFâcanâalsoâbeâusedâinâdownstreamâconversionâplants,âmakingâitâtooâanâinfrastructureâdrop-in.âFurthermore,âPEFâisârecyclableâwhich offers converters and brandowners the opportunity of a closed loop productâlifecycle.âTheâimprovedâpropertiesâofâPEFâcomparedâtoâPETâofferâbetter performance in existing applications, such as in carbonated soft drinkâbottles.âInâaddition,âPEFâopensâtheâdoorâtoânewâapplicationsâwhereâPETâpropertiesâdoânotâsuffice,âlikeâinâsmallerâservingâsizesâandâlight-weighting,âandâalsoâforâreplacingâotherâpackagingâmaterialsâlikeâglassâandâaluminum cans.
