I Cry to You Nathan Carroll
Give ear to my words, O LORD, Consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, My King and my God, For to You I will pray. My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it to You,
And I will look up. Psalm 5:1-3
Fear. Anxiety. Anger. Unrest. Alienated. Apathy. Melancholy. These are words that over the last eleven months have been spoken while discussing the current social, political, and medical climate. To be honest, these are all emotions that I have felt at some point over the past twelve months. We are truly living in unprecedented times. These are natural expressions of human emotion when faced with uncertainty. Then, often, we compound these emotional responses by speaking with others who are reacting to uncertainty. Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 15:14 can be applied here, “If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”
Psalm 5 falls into a category of psalms that make up almost a third of the book. It is a lament psalm. David is obviously in a difficult situation. He is grieved over the work of evil before him and the uncertainty of his current circumstances has him experiencing the emotions discussed earlier. Must specifically in verses 4-6; 9-10, David is describing anger. Although, it is a righteous indignation he knows it is out of place because vengeance belongs to God. So, what does he do?
First, David, did not talk to others about his emotions. He cried out to God (v. 1-3). Secondly, he admitted his lack of knowledge and his dependance on God’s wisdom (v. 7-8). Third, when reminded of God’s promises, David chose to trust them and live in the joy of his Lord (v. 11-12).
What uncertainty has attacked your spirit today? Before you seek the wisdom of man, talk to God. Before you allow human emotion to cripple you, remind yourself of God’s promises. Before you say woe is me, rejoice because you are a child of God. Our Lord has never experienced uncertainty. He has not forgotten us. He is our shield and hope.
