CAP-CCAPC ProgramThe Family Education & Support Centre offers a wide variety of support and educational programming for parents that include the Child Development Play Focused Program for children 0-6 while parents in childminding. This is a free and integral part of the national programs funded through the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Community Action Program for Children - CAPC, that develops local services to improve the health and development of children. School’s CoolSchool’s Cool is a FREE school readiness program that teaches children the skills they need to successfully enter kindergarten. The School’s Cool program is an experience based 72hr program presented by qualified instructors that gives children the opportunity to experience what kindergarten will be like, and begin to develop the skills that they will need to have a successful and enjoyable experience when they start school. Preference will be given to children who have not attended preschool. This program is funded through B.C. Gaming.

Singing English Activity Program – This CAP-C, early literacy program for parents and their children ages birth to six years, offers parents and children the opportunity to learn songs and games in a group setting. Each participant will be given information sheets with words to songs, learning outcomes and additional tools. A snack, craft activity and free play will be part of the program. FAMILIES SUPPORTING FAMILIES PROGRAMSThis program provides FREE weekly groups for parents in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Katzie communities. Discussion about parenting, child development, self care and other concerns relevant to parenting will be central themes. All groups provide parents with a non-judgmental environment and the opportunity to connect with other families who share similar experiences. Being part of a group can: • Increase problem solving skills • Increase independence• Improve self esteem • Encourage self care• Strengthen social support networks • Decrease need of formal supports from social service programs

Parenting Young ChildrenThis ongoing group for parents of children age 0-6 meets weekly on Thursday mornings, to support and learn from each other. Childminding for children ages 0-6 available. Group starts Sept. 4, 2014.

Young ParentsThis is an ongoing support group for young parents up to the age of 26, and meets weekly on Wednesday afternoons with a light meal provided. CAP-C Childminding for children ages 0-6 available. Group starts Sept. 10, 2014.

Breakfast ClubA chance for parents, who are currently working on their parenting with an outreach worker, to get together over a light breakfast and discuss parenting. This group meets twice a month on a Wednesday morning. Group starts Sept. 17, 2014.

Single Mom’sProvided in collaboration with the YWCA of Vancouver this weekly support group meets Monday afternoons. This group gives mothers who are living apart from the father of their children an opportunity to come together for support, relaxation, a light meal, resource referral and guest speakers. CAP-C/YWCA Childminding for children 0-12 available. Group starts Sept. 8, 2014.

Mental Wellness ParentingThis FREE eight week group is designed with the specific needs of parents experiencing major depression, bipolar disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, and features mental wellness material, parenting information and support delivered with an emphasis on parents’ mental wellness.Tuesdays Oct 14 - Dec 9, 2014Tuesdays Apr 21 - June 9, 2015

Sleepover 4 Self-esteem and LeadershipThis innovative and fun program features the following group activities.

• a 5 week program filled with skill building for girls aged 14-17 to become leadership mentors.• a sleepover event- where 25 girls aged 8-12 are given the chance to go on an adventure for a

night filled with positive self messages, leadership building skills and a whole lot of fun. Mentor girls are given the chance to exercise some of their new leadership skills with support from trained staff.

• followed by a 5 week program assisted by the mentors for all participants to learn how to integrate their new skills and experiences.

Anger Monsters-Where Do They Hide?For parents and their children ages 8-12. Kids in ControlKids in Control Support Group Program created by the BC Schizophrenia Society gives information, education and support to children ages 8-13, who have a parent with a serious mental illness. This new program helps provide the tools and coping skills that will help children grow up happy and healthy while living with possible challenges and risks. 8-1.5hr sessions. Dates TBA

Home Alone: Skills for Kids and ParentsAn opportunity for parents and children together to gain information and learn and role play new skills for being safe when staying home alone. Parenting for Separated and Blended FamiliesThis four week program is for parents of families that are interested in learning skills around the specific needs of blended or separated families. ADULT MENTAL HEALTHAdult Mental Health Resource Centre: The AMHRC provides information about mental illness and mental wellness through public education and private speaking engagements, mental health screenings and other community events. The Centre also offers psycho-educational groups. Our core services are Free and funded through the Fraser Health Authority. Core ProgrammingPerinatal Support GroupThis ten week group is designed to meet the needs of women experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety during pregnancy and/or post partum. The model has components of psycho-education, social interaction and cognitive behavioural therapy and is facilitated by two trained and experienced mental health professionals. This group also includes partner and joint partner evenings. Course date is TBA, please check our website www.familyed.bc.ca. Childminding for children 0-6 available.

Changeways Core ProgramThis eight week program is designed for clients experiencing major depression, bipolar disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. The course includes topics such as identifying problems and transforming them, learning about stress, assertiveness skills, balanced thinking, social skills and prevention techniques. Community GroupsFibromyalgia Support GroupThis is a support group for people living with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue and other Chronic Pain. We share our experiences, issues, problems and helpful hints and treatments available all in a confidential fun environment. Call Lea at 604-465-9348 for more information. Drop in and no need to register. The last Tuesday of each month from 10 - 11:30am.

Acquired Brain Injury Support GroupSupport for individuals who have suffered brain injuries that have affected their lives. Call Nora Chambers at 604-462-9392 for more information.The 1st Tuesday of the month.

Relaxation & Therapeutic Touch™ Support GroupThis is a support group for people and their families, living with cancer, pain, stress and/or any debilitating illness. The group practices relaxation/meditation, sharing and caring, and Therapeutic Touch, which is an alternative healing modality. Call Jean at 604-463-7771 for more information and if you wish to attend. Jean is a Recognized Practitioner with the BC Therapeutic Touch Network Society.The 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.

Strengthening Families TogetherFor family members of people with serious mental illness, focusing on the major psychiatric disorders. Taught by a trained family members in a supportive environment. Contact Nancy Friesen at 604-720-3935.

GOLDEN EARS FEASTGolden Ears FEAST is the local food security planning table. It covers all aspects of food from farming to processing to eating to composting. GE FEAST delivers several low income access programs including Community Kitchens, the Gourmet Grannies and Let’s Get Cooking. Community Kitchens is a GE FEAST initiative sponsored by The Family Education & Support Centre and funded by a MR Community Grant & Vancity.

MULTICULTURAL SERVICES CENTRE Multicultural Programs and Services: Provides Multicultural awareness and education programs to the community through a variety of different programs to help strengthen participation of Diverse Groups and increase understanding of cultural diversity in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Katzie. Interfaith Bridging Committee: The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Interfaith Bridging Committee continues its important volunteer work in connecting and creating dialogue among diverse faith groups for the purpose of harmony, peace and understanding. Local Immigration Partnerships (LIPs): Local Immigration Partnerships (LIPs) are the mechanism through which Citizenship and Immigration Canada supports the development of community-based partnerships and planning around the needs of newcomers. Family Ed. is a portal for this new project; a new form of multi-level governance involving municipal, provincial and federal partners. The long-term vision for LIPs is to support the development of multi-sectored partnerships at the local community level to:

• Integrate newcomer needs into the community planning process• Identify community-specific strategic priorities• Implement a settlement strategy and action plan to improve newcomer outcomes

The overall objective is to engage groups that will coordinate and enhance the current settlement and

integration service delivery network, while avoiding duplication. Strategic partnerships between many

stakeholders are encouraged to improve dialogue and information sharing between sectors, identify

gaps, and create a locally developed strategic plan and action plan. For more information contact the

Safe Harbour: Safe Harbour: Respect for All is about a vision in action: creating opportunities for

businesses, institutions, agencies, and municipalities to create respectful, welcoming workplaces and

communities. Participants learn how to create a more inclusive workplace where employees, customers

and clients of diverse backgrounds know that they will be welcomed and safe. There are currently 20

locations in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

Safe Harbour locations sign on to three key commitments:

• Equitable Treatment for All: Welcoming all clients and/or customers in a respectful manner. If

a concern is expressed regarding a lack of respectful treatment, employers and staff take steps to

address it.

• An Immediate Safe Place: Providing an immediate safe refuge for someone experiencing

discrimination in or near the worksite, which may include a place to sit, a glass of water, a phone

to use, and access to a list of service providers in the community.

• Prepared Employees and Worksites: Preparing all managers and staff to implement these

commitments.

Multicultural Women’s Group: Meet women from around the world and learn about different

community services, programs, and issues. A great place to practice your English in a relaxed

atmosphere. Group runs every second Wednesday in the morning starting in September 2014.

Registration is required to attend.

Immigrant Parenting Program: This program will inform and educate parents about parenting as

immigrants in Canada. Interactive sessions will feature topics including common concerns, cultural

considerations, coping with immigration stress as a family unit, parenting values, parenting styles, and

social pressures among others in the new program. Free childminding is available for ages 0-6.
