The Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema

From Laurel and Hardy comedies to rare masterpieces from Soviet Russia, the Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema has been catering to audiences of all ages – and tastes – since 2011. The only event of its kind in Scotland, it offers a unique mix of captivating films, live music and family fun.

The festival returns to the Hippodrome, Scotland’s oldest purpose-built cinema, from 16-20 March. The full programme is under wraps until February, but tickets are now on sale for the opening night event, Earth, a visually stunning Russian film from 1930, with a live score by Jane Gardner and Hazel Morrison (The Goose Woman, HippFest 2013; Dragnet Girl, HippFest 2014).

The popular Jeely Jar event, a highlight of each Hippodrome season throughout the year, will return on Saturday 19 March. Take a clean jeely (jam) jar for 2-for-1 entry and enjoy some family fun and competitions before a programme of entertaining comedies. www.hippfest.co.uk

WE’VE MOVED! Please note our new location.

Many of us wake up on January 1st feeling exhausted from Christmas, a little worse for wear from the night before and desperate for the kids to go back to school. But we also find ourselves scribbling lists of New Year’s resolutions – to get fit, lose weight, drink a bit less, get stuck in to that pile of paperwork on the kitchen table and, often, to give our working lives a shake up too.

The New Year is not just about detox-ing our bodies – it can also be a time to detox our lives. So read on for some great ideas about a New Year New You approach to 2016.

New year new you

What will you do in 2016?

Increase your chances of success in 2016!January – the time for making resolutions: a New Year, New You. For many small business owners it’s a time to reflect on the previous year, and make exciting plans for the next. Top business analysts suggest taking an objective look at your business…have you revisited your own website recently? Looking at it through the eyes of your customer… is information current, or is it missing fantastic new products or services? A simple way to quickly make your website or literature look miles better is to get professional photos taken. Whether you sell a product, a service or run a premises, a great photograph can make you stand out from the crowd. Lighthouse Studios in Causewayhead have been helping businesses look good for over ten years and are offering small businesses special rates throughout January and February that won’t break the bank. To find out more about the special offers, contact Lighthouse Studios for more information on 01786 475 007.

A fresh start! The New Year is a time when many of us rethink the way we do things and make commitments to change. These changes may be driven by a variety of reasons including our own or family’s health, social setting or financial situation. Reducing our alcohol consumption on a regular basis can help positively contribute to all of these things. Allowing our body time to recover, being positive role models for our children, drinking sensibly in social settings and a reduced financial outlay are all great reasons to consider cutting back this New Year. If you feel alcohol has become problematic for you or a family member then make 2016 the year to reach out for support. For free and confidential advice about alcohol or drugs contact Signpost Recovery on 0845 673 1774 or visit: www.nhs.uk/Livewell/alcohol If you are affected by another person’s alcohol or drug use contact Forth Valley Family Support service on: 08080 10 10 11 or email – [email protected]

Pedal your way to a new you in 2016Getting on your bike is a great way to get healthier and feel great. Our Recyke-a-bike Outreach Co-ordinator Phil is a great example. Phil really turned his life around when he got on a bike just after the London Olympics. He lost a staggering 13 stone but he shed more than pounds - Phil said goodbye to high blood pressure, fatty liver disease and depression. Pedal power really worked for Phil so he now works for us, spending most of his time helping people across the Forth Valley get on their bikes and cycle safely and confidently. For more info on how Recyke-a-bike can help you and your family feel the benefits of cycling get in touch on 01786 447 559 or [email protected]

Unique Cellfield Programme helps with DyslexiaDyslexia and similar processing difficulties are common barriers to learning which affect how the brain processes written and spoken language. In addition to hindering academic progress they impact self-esteem and confidence. Effective teaching methods and strategies go a long way in helping people with dyslexia, however in Stirling there is also the unique Cellfield programme. Cellfield is a multi-sensory computer based programme which develops and strengthens areas in the brain used for language processing. Clients can gain on average 2 years in their reading age after just 10 days and they also report other positive outcomes leading to improved confidence and self esteem. Cellfield provider, teacher and former Headteacher Fiona Macdiarmid – who also runs the successful Stirling Kip McGrath tuition centre – has witnessed great results from Cellfield. Resolve to look af ter your eye health in 2016Most people enter a new year with good intentions: improving our health is a popular one. Having an eye test is not usually something people think could help with that. You may have good sight and not need glasses but the eye test is about so much more than that. Our optometrist, Mary Docherty, can examine different parts of your eye to see how your general health is doing. In children, she can potentially identify problems that may be causing them to struggle with their school work. Eye examinations are completely free in Scotland and at Ochil Eyes in Tillicoultry, we provide a relaxed, friendly environment for the whole family to come and have their eyes tested. Make your eyes a priority for 2016! For more information, call us on 01259 752755, visit our website at www.ochileyes.co.uk or find us on Facebook!

New year new you

Bright ideas for parties

families central scotland / issue 328

Parties, like kids, come in all shapes and sizes and depending on the age and interests of your child and time

of year the possibilities are endless. From ‘do it yourself ’ parties to calling in the professionals, kids at home, in your garden, local park or hiring your local community centre, there are plenty of options to make it a memorable day . After many years of planning and attending birthday parties we have pulled together our top tips.

Do plan ahead and don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends and family. There are loads of fantastic party entertainers in the local area so letting someone else take on the stress of organising a room full of kids is great and lets you enjoy the party with your child. Have a few extra party bags just in case an unexpected child or sibling turns up and always good to have a few games up your sleeve just in case you find parents are a wee bit late picking their kids up. Don’t stress too much about the food, keep it sim-

ple and don’t worry if kids don’t want to eat anything. We tend to put the savoury food out first then put the sweet stuff out other-wise kids ignore the ham sandwiches and go straight for the chocolate! At the start of the party we have found it best to put the presents to one side and let our child con-centrate on the party and then make time afterwards to sit and open them all. Our top tip must be to try and keep the evening free; we (parents and child) are always tired after a party so an evening to get a take away and just relax has always been vital!

0-4 Those first few years of birthdays are so exciting for kids and your child

can be overwhelmed by all the fuss made of them. So keep it simple and about an hour and a half to two hours can be enough. At this age depending on the weather and size of your garden it is often easier to keep the party at home; however there are plenty of local community

centres or church halls for hire. If you don’t feel you have the energy or expertise to organise party games then there are great local party organisers who will provide plenty of songs, music, singing, dancing, arts and crafts all in the comfort of your own home. All you need to do is provide the cake (and coffee for the mums!).

5-9 This is the age when kids enjoy more active parties. Children will be at school and what one child has can often set the precedence for the year group

or can give parents the headache of trying to find a ‘different’ party experience. Keeping numbers down can be quite hard and we have either just invited the whole class or just the boys or girls depending on gender of child. (And cost of course!) If you are lucky enough to have a summer birthday then it can be easier to have a party at home or in the local park. However if like me you find the experience of entertaining 25 kids overwhelming then a party entertainer is invaluable as well as booking your local community centre or a party at a specific venue. I have a great deal of admiration for the fantastic party entertainers who seem to be able to keep an active and hyper bunch of children happy and entertained. From every different type of sports to making your own lego creation, to singing, dancing and making your own CD, the list is endless.

10-13 At this age, kids often want to go on an outing and the invite list will be less so a

trip to the cinema or to one of our local attractions is more manageable. As ever it is weather dependent so there are some great indoor as well as outdoor attractions around and depending on the interests of your child then getting their nails done in town, playing sports or a sleepover can be great fun. I have a Ladies Designer Shoes and Accessories boutique called ‘Ruby Tuesday’ Fountain Road, Bridge of Allan and I opened ‘Ruby Ruby’ which is a Childrens Shoe Boutique, in April this year. It is now located at 1 Main Street Doune. Our ladies boutique has a stunning selection of shoes from top designers, bags for every occasion from Lulu Guinness, an amazing jewellery collection of swarovski’s from Butler & Wilson and beautiful contemporary collections from Sheila Fleet. Ruby Ruby is a child’s heaven and our mums and dads love coming too, from all over the country, to experience the vast selection and choice of gorgeous quality shoes, boots and sandals, as well as the professional, friendly service in a stunning boutique environment. Please come and visit us, we are open 7 days a week. Call us on 01786 842112, if you would like a 1-to-1 appointment, we will happily cater for all your needs. Like us on facebook under RubyRubyShoes and we will keep you posted on any new arrivals, or offers.

Why you like living where you do? We live in Dunblane, where my husband’s family have lived for many years. It is a great place to bring up a family, as it has so much to offer all ages. Excellent choices of nurseries, schools, after school clubs, many, many sport clubs, youth clubs, drama and music, Brownies, Cubs etc all in this one city. The High Street has really become a strong candidate for ‘Shop Local’ and has a great choice, offering variety from fresh, local produce, to beautiful florists and gift shops, amazing choice of hairdressers, beauty salons and café/restaurants but best of all – Toy Hub with a fantastic selection of games and toys.

Favourite shop Ruby Tuesday and Ruby Ruby of course! But I also shop regularly at our Marks & Spencer, Dunblane, in fact I don’t know what I would do without it now.

Favourite park Ochlochy Park, Glen Road. It is a beautiful hidden park with areas for children to run and play and a stunning duck pond with lots of hungry ducks. I spent a lot of fun times here with my children when they were younger.

Favourite day out Briarlands Farm, Blair Drummond is a brilliant family day out with something for everyone and the kids come home exhausted! Feed the animals, jumping pillows, zip wire, mini diggers, craft activities indoors, a delicious tearoom and much more. It’s a must!

Favourite child friendly restaurantThe Riverside, Dunblane. Everything from a healthy or hearty breakfast, a coffee with home-baking beside the wood burning stove or downstairs with the kids in the play area, fantastic food with family in the restaurant, a glass of wine or a local beer with friends in the bar or on the riverside terrace.

Favourite night out without the kids. Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles and Champany Inn, Linlithgow.

Proudest eco-friendly moment Recycling wellies, which is a service we offer from Ruby Ruby in conjunction with Kids Love Wellies, Falkirk.

No parent should be withoutA chilled bottle of delicious wine!

Parenting pet hatesChildren with snotty, runny noses and people on mobile phones, when you are having quality family time together.

Favourite family holiday spot We have spent many happy holidays at Cape Town in South Africa and it is a definite favourite for all the family.

Most loved children’s bookHairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd. My children could both read this to me off by heart, when they were 2!

Best children DVD or tele programme: The Simpsons.

Most played with toys: Has got to be Lego which can be purchased from the fantastic local Toy Hub!

Favourite Food Chocolate and Haribos.

Big Garden Birdwatch 2016Last year over half a million people took part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, spotting more than 8.5 million birds across the UK, and the organisers are hoping this year’s watch will be a record-breaking event.

This year’s survey takes part on 30th and 31st January. To take part, simply spend one hour counting the birds in your garden or local park, and record the highest number of each bird species seen at any one time. The morning is the best time to look, when the birds are out and about feeding after a cold winter night. Not sure what type of bird you are spotting in your garden? Don’t worry, the website has a handy interactive identifier and can help you spot what species of birds you have in your garden.

There is also a special pack for schools wishing to take part. Big Schools’ Birdwatch is an educational activity that gets your class closer to nature. It takes just an hour and works for all ages and abilities.

To find out more information and sign up for a free Big Garden Birdwatch 2016 pack, go to www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

creating confident children

Confidence is just as important in life – if not more so - than a brace of A grades or endless extra-curricular

skills. It’s vital to emotional wellbeing and something most of us hope our children will develop.

Confidence is about being comfortable with who you are, willing to give things a go - even if you’re not sure you’ll succeed - and trusting your own abilities and judgement. But how can we instil this feeling in our children, particularly if it doesn’t come naturally to them?

Accept your child’s starting pointNot all children – or adults - are confident by nature (wouldn’t life be boring if we were all the same?) and whilst we can encourage self-belief, transforming a shy or anxious child into a ‘life and soul of the party’ type, is probably an unrealistic aim.

Try to avoid making comments to your child such as how you wish they were more confident, or less shy because, in effect, you’re saying you don’t value them as they are - a real confidence crusher.

Accept your child’s personality and ‘starting point’; it might be different to yours, their sibling’s, friends’ or classmates’ and that’s absolutely fine.

Don’t force them into situations they aren’t comfortable withIn most scenarios, one of the worst things you can do for a young child who’s unsure is to push them in at the deep end with something when they aren’t ready. They need to trust you when taking on new experiences and doing this damages that trust.

Take small steps to encourage confidenceFind opportunities to stretch just a bit beyond what your son or daughter is comfortable with at a time. So that could be going to their friend’s house with them initially, then you just staying for a little while at the start, then next time, they might be happy to go alone.

Work out what their fear isOften a child will have niggling worries holding them back in a specific situation. So perhaps “If I put my hand up in class, I might get the answer wrong and the other children will laugh at me”. Pin down their concern – although preschool children might struggle to articulate their fear.

Address their concern and provide plenty of reassurance that they will be okay, that what others think doesn’t really matter and that you’re there for them. Talk about similar situations you experienced as a child, when you were afraid of something, and how it worked out for you.

Keep praise specialThese days, there’s a tendency to be super-positive and heap on the ‘fabulous, you’re the best child ever!’ comments every other second – sometimes it feels like we should be praising our kids simply for breathing. But if you tell them everything they do is wonderful all the time, positivity loses power. Keep praise for when it’s truly warranted and focus on effort rather than just results. This way, when they do do something amazing, your comments will have more impact.

Find their forte and allow it to flourishIf your child doesn’t do so well in academic work, or the usual extra-curricular activities at school, this can make their self-esteem fragile. Seek opportunities for them to try other, more unusual activities out of school and highlight positive personality traits such as being especially kind or a good organiser.

Step back sometimes and let them ‘have a go’ – land that helicopter! Helicopter parenting – hovering over your child, stepping in to resolve the slightest issue or preventing them from failing – is a barrier to building confidence. Children need to find their own solutions, attempt things their way sometimes and take sensible risks. Sure, you can guide and advise but try not to jump in and take over too quickly.

Whether it’s allowing your three-year-old to choose her own outfit or your ten-year-old to walk to the post box alone, letting go is a crucial confidence builder.

Winter Warmer StewFrom Siobhan Berry of Mummy Cooks

This hearty Winter Warmer Stew is the perfect thing to come home to on a dark and dreary evening. Prepare at the weekend and keep on hand for a delicious meal in a moment. Just add rice or mashed potato! It is also great for batch-cooking, so why not double up the recipe and freeze in portions? There is little or no work involved in putting the whole thing together, so don’t be put off by the cooking time, sit back and relax while it takes care of itself.

Ingredients:Olive oil

1 onion, peeled and chopped800g lamb, cut into 5cm cubes

2 parsnips, peeled and quartered4 carrots, peeled and halved

½ butternut squash, halved, deseeded and roughly diced

4 celery stalks, chopped (you can substitute with leeks)

2 tablespoons tomato purée1 Tin chopped tomatoes500ml vegetable stock

1 handful each of rosemary, thyme and parsley2 bay leaves, snapped in half

2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped

Method:1. Preheat your oven to 160 degrees.2. Heat a casserole pan with some olive oil.3. Add the onion and garlic, fry for 3/4 minutes.4. Add the meat to the pan and seal before adding

the vegetables, tomatoes, purée and stock - gently stir together.

5. Add in the herbs, bring to the boil, place a lid on top, cook in the preheated oven for roughly 4 hours, until the meat is tender.

6. For a vegetarian alternative, try the same recipe using a whole butternut squash instead of a half and add a tin of drained, washed chick peas. The cooking time will be around one hour.
