As I pack my bags for the second Butters family ski trip, itoccurs to me that I never did tell you all how we faired onthe first. Loyal readers may remember we went to Austriato test the skills we’d all honed at SNO!zone in Castleford.

The holiday was great – beautiful scenery, family time fromdawn ‘til dusk and fresh air galore. Before we went I had onewish – that we all came back in one piece. And we did…well almost.

There was the small matter of Isobel’s split lip, sustained as shesucked on a metal balcony in sub zero temperatures. I think I cansafely say neither she nor her sister will make that mistake again. We have since compiled a list of blindingly obvious things youshouldn’t do.

To keep spirits high this January, we have a great featureon the best winter parties. As ever, there are some super competitions including the chance to win £50 towards aGymboree Party, some great birthday gifts and tickets to anextremely and absolutely must see show.

Finally, in other news, Father Christmas didn’t bring us theexpected baby guinea pigs – much to my relief but Eliza’s disappointment. It turned out Hannah Montana Butters had simply overindulged over the festive period, and looking in themirror she’s not the only one. I shall be joining my furry friendin a spot of New Year abstinence.

Anyone for a carrot?

What’s NEW…

Zhara Armstong is giggling as she unpacks a gang ofGrinches from a delivery box at the back of Wetherby’snewest toy shop, Treasures.

IT’S hard to hold back the laughter when you’re surrounded by so much fun. From make believe kitchens and mythical creatures to magical dress up outfits, this is shopping with asmile. Zhara opened Treasures in September last year with the aim of bringing a touch of

magic to toy shopping. It’s the perfect antidote to the soul-less out of town toy stores, with glumfaced staff less than happy to help. At Treasures, Zhara wants everyone to leave with a smile.

“I want people to come in to touch and play with our toys,”says Zhara. “It’s all about creating a wonderful experience. A lot of people comment on the space in the shop and howeasy it is to bring in a pram. Parents like the fact there’s lots to keep the children entertainedwhile they browse.”

The floor is covered with puzzles to play with, there’s a mini shopping trolley for your littleone to fill, and every so often a toy train begins its journey around the store. But as we facea year of cut back and belt tightening, does Zhara worry about her new business in 2011?

“We’re not asking people to come in and spend a fortune. We have a broad range ofproducts which are pocket money toys or weekend treats. That’s what we do really well.”

Zhara’s children – Finn and Niamh – are delighted with their mum’s new business. Thereare certain perks attached to owning a toy store, but there are strict rules, as Zhara explains.

“Finn loves the Star Wars products and Niamh loves the beautiful dressing up clothes,as well as the Melissa and Doug craft sets. However, they earn pocket money and anythingthey take from Treasures leaves in a bag with a receipt. They’ve learnt quickly to treat this asa business.”

And this is a family business that everyone’s playing a part in. From fact finding trips totoy stores across the North, to rigorous product testing, Treasures belongs to all the Armstrongfamily. In fact six year old Finn is finding his feet at the store’s youngest staff member.

“I saw him telling a little boy about the Thomas trains,”says Zhara. “It’s great to see his enthusiasm and he takes every opportunity to show people around. He’s a great salesman!”

Treasures is already becoming known not just for great toys, butalso for its events calendar. Last year the store played host to witchesand wizards, a children’s author and even Santa stopped by. This yearthere’s talk of Merlin the Wizard visiting in February and more authorsignings. Zhara hopes these dates for your diary mean Treasures is morethan a traditional toy shop.

“I keep thinking, if we are enjoying it this much,”reflects Zhara,“then I hope the people who come into the shop get a sense ofthat magic.”

Treasures is based on High Street, Wetherby and is openMonday – Friday from 9.30am – 5pm, and on Saturdayfrom 9am – 5pm. For information on events visitwww.treasurestoys.co.uk • 01937 589 187

What would you do if your child was choking?Would you know how to treat a burn to your toddler?Sarah Butters reports on a Leeds company running firstaid courses for parents. When Jamie Dickinson’s son Ben fell and cut his head, she knew it wasn’t a serious injury. Justa few months earlier Jamie from Adel had joined some friends at a First Aid course for parentsrun by Underwood Training. There, she’d been told how to treat a head injury, and how tomonitor her little boy.

“Before, I would have panicked with all the blood, but I was confident I knew the signsto look for.”

The two hour course Jamie attended was run by Leeds based Helen Underwood. Helenruns first aid training for businesses, schools, nurseries and child-minders. The parent first aidsessions are proving increasingly popular with mums and dads looking for peace of mind.

“The fear of most parents is, if something happens, what would I do?”says Helen.“Our children are precious and we want to know how to look after them. If, god forbid, something does happen, I think every parent’s nightmare is not knowing what to do.”

The course takes a look at the most common causes of parental concern and focuses onchildren from newborn to school age. Helen looks at the treatment of burns, what to do ifyour child is choking and when to worry about a bump on the head or a high temperature. It’s the sort of information you hope you’ll never need, but need to know.

“We give really practical advice,”says Helen. “For instance,if you use a bib with sleeves, don’t put it over the top of thereins in your child’s high chair. If you do, you can’t get themout quickly to deal with any choking incident.”

With the help of a mannequin, Helen shows parents howto carry out effective CPR on a toddler and how to stop a childchoking. For the mums who joined Jamie on the course, the advice and information from Helen has given them the peace ofmind they were looking for. “It’s given me confidence,”says

Louise Bates from Moortown. “Helen gave us lots of really practical tips and it’s run in an environment where I felt I couldask questions.”

Helen and her team can either bring the course to yourhome, or hold a session at Underwood Training’s centre in Headingley. She says seeing parents leave with new skills andnew confidence is fantastic. “I love sharing the knowledge Ihave,”says Helen, “We’re giving people real life saving skillswhich can make a massive difference to them and their family.”

Underwood Training’s Parent Checklist…CHOKINGTake a look in your child’s mouth. Can you see the obstruction? If you can, clear it. If you can’t, DON’T poke around.Use gravity and some firm taps on the shoulder blades to clear the blockage.

BUMPED HEADSApply a cold compress to decrease swelling. Watch for changes in behaviour, ordrowsiness. If you are concerned, take them to Children’s Accident and Emergencyat Leeds General Infirmary.

MINOR BURNSExpose the burn to cool water for 10 minutes. If your child won’t let you put theburn under the tap, soak a non fluffy cloth in cool water and apply.

1 PAINT A POTPots 2 Go, Montpellier Parade, Harrogate • 01423 524 797 • www.pots2go.co.ukSay ‘birthday party’ and you probably think of overexcited children and lots of noise. Not atPots 2 Go. There was no lack of excitement on the afternoon of Isobel’s 7th birthday party, but it was all focused on getting creative. The guests, who spanned in age from 4 to 11,made plenty of noise as they picked a piece of pottery from the huge range. For the birthdaygirl, it was a horse shaped trinket box. For her 11 year old cousin Millie, it was a nameplaque. Not to be left out, I chose a coffee mug.

But silence fell over Pots 2 Go as the aprons went on. Actually, it was hard to get a wordout of any of Isobel’s 12 party guests as the painting began. Margaret Brennan owns Pots 2Go and says the parties are great fun.

“We love the fact that the children have fun and are creative. Sometimes you can cutthe concentration in the room with a knife! A common theme to the parties is the quietnesswhen the children are painting. The parents are often amazed.”

And amazed I was. The concerns I had about it being a party too young for my 11 yearold niece and too old for my 4 year old daughter were silenced by the silence! Each tooktime to be creative, speaking only to get advice from their neighbour about their artwork.

Margaret says she enjoys hostingthe parties.

“We recently had a groupof 7 year old boys in, whopainted boxes for their mums. The parents were really shockedwhen they came in to collect theirchild. It’s perfect for school ages children – both boys and girls. As the children get older, we extend the time of the party – a 10 year old will sit and paint for longer than a 5 year old!”

As well as painting their own pieces, the children were asked to contribute their thumbprints to a plate, to be presented to Isobel as a memory of her party. With that done, the partycame to an end – and so did the silence!Pots 2 Go offers Paint a Pot and Make Your Own Jewellery parties. Parties can behosted at Pots 2 Go in Harrogate, or at a venue of YOUR choice. Bookings require aminimum of 8 guests and, in store, a maximum of 20. NEW FOR 2011: Paint a Canvas Party! LAZY DAISYAmanda Bryant is a mum of two from the Wharf Valley. She runs Daisy Birthingclasses across West and North Yorkshire. These are weekly antenatal sessions whichaim to give parents-to-be all the tools needed to have the birth of your choice.

What does Lazy Daisy offer?“Daisy Birthing is a relaxed birth education programme for all mums-to-be. We use verygentle movement, breathing techniques and affirmations to help a woman understand thephysiology of birth, inspiring them to feel confident and in control.

When my son arrived nine weeks early, I was completely unprepared, both physicallyand emotionally. The experience made me anxious about another pregnancy. When I did fallpregnant again, I searched for antenatal classes to give me focus, ease my anxieties and putme in control and I couldn’t find what I was looking for. That’s why I decided to train as a LazyDaisy Birth Educator and Mentor. I want to offer mums-to-be an enjoyable, intimate class thatfocuses on building birth confidence.”

Why do you think parents to be are turning to classes like yours?“Choosing a service outside of the NHS has definitely become morepopular. There’s no longer the central funding for a huge variety ofclasses. Birth preparation has to be a personal choice and for manythe traditional Parentcraft classes don’t fit the bill. Daisy Birthing provides a real solution – more holistic and movement based thanthe alternatives, and still very affordable. We are here to complementthe overstretched NHS birthing services and not to replace orundermine them.”

Amanda runs weekly Daisy Birthing session in Ilkey, Otleyand Harrogate. Classes run for 6 weeks and you can secure a reduced rate of £40 if you book in January. Private couplesworkshops are also available. For more information contactAmanda on 0845 465 0925 or [email protected]

YORKSHIRE STORKSA group of independent midwives providing personal support to mums-to-be across Yorkshire. While all trained withinthe NHS, the Yorkshire Storks work independently to build deep relationships with the women in their care. They specialisein Home Birthing.

What can Yorkshire Storks offer?“As independent midwives, we have the luxury of time, and few enough clients to help every woman in our care to get the birth theyhope for. With so many women to care for, it’s difficult for any NHS maternity service to do this. Before the birth we talk to you about yourbirthing options, give home based antenatal care and we’re your link with NHS health care professionals. At the birth we’ll be there to care and support you through labour and duringthe first hours of your baby’s life. Post natal care includes regular visits for 6 weeks after birth including breast feeding support.”

At what stage do parents call you?“Some clients contact us at the beginning of their first pregnancy. Others seek us out in subsequent pregnancies, especially if their first experience has left them traumatised ordisappointed. Mums can often feel they let themselves or their baby down through lackof preparation.

Some women come to us late in the pregnancy when, for a variety of reasons, they’re told their birth options have been reduced. We have the time to fully explorethe issues, instead of accepting a decision made by the NHS.

Finally, we have been contacted by women in labour who have found out at thelast minute that their local home birthing service has been withdrawn. It’s never toolate to get in touch!”

Yorkshire Storks offers a full birth support package, as well as adviceon individual aspects of pregnancy and birth, including birth planning, post natal advice and breastfeeding counselling. Call 07886 541 510 [email protected] • www.yorkstorks.co.uk

MOTHER NUTURE DOULASBirthing without a Doula has been compared to planning a holiday in a foreign country without a local guide. Without support, you’ll still give birth, but like a tour guide who knowsthe area, speaks the language and has some useful local tips,a Doula may make the birthing experience more positive andmemorable. Local mums, Rachel Cline, Emma Tonlinson andJulia Parry set up Mother Nurture Doulas back in 2008 to offermums-to-be here in Leeds a guide through pregnancy and birth.

Why do woman choose Doula support?“Many women are frightened about the process of labour and birthand want someone with experience to walk them through it. Mostwomen want to get to know the midwife who will attend their birth, but that’s not possible in the modern day NHS. It takes a huge fearaway knowing that someone who knows what you and your partnerwant will be there. We find that first time fathers are so grateful forour support, especially if the labour goes on for days.”

Have you seen an increase in demand

for Doula support?“Last year was very busy. There’s been a baby boom and that’s hadan impact on maternity services in Leeds. There are now more Doulasworking locally and as awareness grows, so does demand.”

Mother Nuture Doulas offer support before during andafter birth. To find out more contact Rachel on 0113 219 [email protected] www.mothernurturedoulas.com

It’s estimated that as many as 20%of children suffer from eczema atsome point and many are treated withsteroids. Leeds mum Ruth Goodwinis trying an alternative with somereally positive results.

ICAN VIVIDLY REMEMBER not wanting to go to school whenI was eight years old. My skin was so sore and unsightlyand all I wanted to do was hide away and scratch in peace.

The satisfaction is immense for all of thirty seconds before thepain kicks in. I was prescribed steroid creams, and whilst thesymptoms were relieved temporarily they left their mark longterm. I have ‘older’ and ‘thinner’ skin on my hands thanelsewhere on my body.

When my daughter, Lauren, developed eczema as a toddlerI began the search for natural products to relieve it. Four years, and many, many products later her eczema is under control andLauren is finally proud of her skin.

In April of this year, we came across a range of natural, nutritional health products, all herbicide, pesticide and additivefree. All based on the ‘medicine plant’ Aloe Vera, they aim tosoothe, moisturise, revitalise, and nourish both internal and external skin – the epithelial tissue.

Eczema is an inflammation of the skin, with blisters andweeping, chronic dryness, red thickened patches all being potential symptoms, and it’s invariably very, very itchy. It was theitching that used to drive Lauren to scratching in the night untilher skin bled.

Aloe Vera has anti ‘itch’ and anti-bacterial properties andall the products can be applied as often as needed with NO sideeffects. Often the continued, regular use of them means thatsteroid creams are no longer necessary.

Instead Lauren uses a combination of Forever Living productswhich keep her condition under control. For the dry patches,

there’s an Aloe Vera Gelly and a Propolis cream to reduce itchingand moisturise as it heals. To wash, she uses Aloe Liquid Soap. The last product I have introduced Lauren to is the Aloe DrinkingGel. She was reluctant as it has an acquired taste but mixed witha tiny bit of juice, she now drinks 30mls every morning.

The beauty of drinking the gel and using the creamstogether is that it helps to provide nourishment to newly formingskin cells at the base of the epidermis. We are literally soothingthe skin on the inside and outside – a two pronged attack thatmost definitely has the desired results.

We did find that Lauren’s skin got a little worse before itstarted to get better. Often called a ‘healing crisis’, it’s when thedamaged skin is being pushed up to the surface by deeper layersof healing skin. It means the products are working, and a fewweeks later we were rewarded with calmer, smoother skin.

I now have a happy, healthy, smiling little girl and I’m sopassionate about the products that helped her, I’ve become aForever Living distributor. I hope I can help other parents find asteroid free solution to their child’s suffering.

For information and advice on the Forever LivingProducts range of natural, nutritional health productsplease contact Ruth Goodwin on 0777 2613 786.

WHEN SHOULD I BRING MY CHILD TOGET THEIR FEET MEASURED? Children need to have their feet measured

when they start to pull themselves upand take a few steps with a bitof support. At this stage, childrenare still crawling so a soft, flexible

pre-walking shoe allows their toes andfeet to develop while giving them the protection they need.

Your child needs to have been walking confidently for amonth before being fitted for his first proper shoe. These havea firmer sole designed for just walking rather than walkingand crawling.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BRING MYCHILD TO GET THEIR FEET CHECKED?Up until about the age of 3, you should takeyour child to have their shoes checked and feetmeasured every 4 to 8 weeks. They won’t

need new shoes every time! However, children’s feet grow in spurts and theymay stay the same for a while and then

suddenly grow a full size. Regular checksmean when that growth spurt happens, shoes

are replaced before they damage your child’s feet. As your child gets older, the growth slows down so you don’t

need such regular checks. Every 8 to 12 weeks is a good guide.

IS IT WORTH SAVING THE SHOES WORN BYMY OLDER SON FOR USE BY MYYOUNGER CHILD?

Every foot is different so it is never a goodidea to pass shoes on to a younger child

no matter how tempting it might be.As your older child has worn the

shoes first, they will have softened andmoulded to the shape of their feet. These

shoes won’t then give the support and fit needed for youryounger child.

ARE CROCS AND UGG TYPE BOOTSBAD FOR FEET? THEY DON'T SEEMTO OFFER MUCH SUPPORT.Both Crocs and Ugg boots have their

benefits in different ways. Crocs are a greatshoe to wear in the summer as they allow the

foot to breathe and air to circulate. However, they don’t havea firm hold on the foot so they shouldn’t be worn all the time.As a casual beach and summer shoe, they are fab.

Ugg boots are made from a natural Sheepskin material whichallows feet to breathe, staying warm in the winter and cool inthe summer. The soft material means they allow the feet to develop and grow naturally. Genuine UGG boots do have a goodheel support to stop the feet from rolling inwards or outwards.Cheaper copies don’t offer that same support.

The return of SKI SUNDAY

ASUNDAY spent at SNO!zone in Castleford is not for the

faint hearted. It’s cold, it’s busy and if you’re attempting

to get two temperamental children ready for a ski lesson,

it’s pretty exhausting. It’s also absolutely perfect practice for any

ski holiday you’re planning to take.

“Mummy, I’m cold,”says Isobel. “I’m tired,”offers Eliza.

After spending the best part of half an hour getting them ready

for the SNO!zone slope, I answer in the only way I can.

“I don’t care. Off you go.”

It’s the girls second year taking lessons here. Last year they

both signed up to the entry level SNO!Cubs lessons, for 3 – 6 year

olds. Isobel passed and so this year has moved up to SNO!Bears.

These sessions are aimed at the same age group, but move on

from the basics of the snow plough on the nursery slope, to turns

on the main slope. Before long the lessons of last year come

flooding back. That, says Aidan Harington from SNO!zone, is

what makes teaching children so enjoyable.

“Kids don’t have fear. They don’t think about self preservation

so they relax and enjoy the skiing. If it doesn’t work, and they fall

over, they pick themselves up and try again. There is no fear factor.”

The lessons here are aimed at children of all standards. From

the 4 year old freestyler to the 10 year old beginner there is a

session to suit. There are year round academies and clubs aimed

at maintaining and improving your child’s ski skills. But teaching

children is very different to teaching the many adults who come

through the doors of SNO!zone in Castleford, as Aidan explains.

“When you teach children, it’s got to be much more active –

much more doing and much less talking. We play a lot of games.

For instance, the aeroplane theme is good for getting kids

turning and getting their weight on the right foot. We use

our imaginations.”

This year, Aidan and his team are teaching more SNO!Cubs

and SNO!Bears than ever before. For most parents, it’s about

giving their children a flavour of the holiday ahead and making

the most of your family break.

“You build up their familiarity with the cold conditions, with

the equipment, so that when you all arrive on holiday, they know

what to expect,”explains Aidan. “As a family, you are going to

get so much more out of your holiday, if you have a child who

knows what they’re letting themselves in for. “

There’s no doubt the Butters girls know what they’re letting

themselves in for, and so do I.

“Mummy, I’m still cold,”says Isobel as she gets off the slope.

“And I’m still tired,”adds Eliza.

As we remove the layer upon layer of ski paraphernalia,

I attempt to be a model parent, but once again fail. “And I’m

really proud of you both… but I still don’t care.”

SNO!zone Castleford offers lessons for children from

3 years old. To find out more, call 0871 222 5671 or

go to www.snozoneuk.com

With Castleford’s indoor ski slope SNO!zone reporting a 50% increase in the number of young

skiers joining their lessons, Families Leeds is back on the slopes to put it to the test.
