Manatee Update…

Last year, we reported on two students (then juniors, now seniors), Courtney Bair andRylie Wahl, who, as their junior Improvement Plan project, chose the topic

“Managing the Florida Manatee.” Their project included supporting the manateeconservation movement by raising money, which was donated to the Columbus zoo. Atthat time, there were two manatees at the zoo: Stubby and Rae. It has just been reportedthat Rae, who had been suffering from hunger and dehydration when she was rescued, isnow well enough to be transported to the Miami Sequarium in Florida and will bereleased into the water off of Florida sometime in 2015.

The Bishop Ready/China connection goes back to the summer of 2010 when a group

of Ready administrators and faculty visitedChina and forged an association with a highschool there. Since that beginning, two groupsof Ready students have travelled to the MiddleKingdom, visited our sister high school, attended classes, and visited historic sites. Now,six Chinese students are enrolled at BishopReady and the Ready International StudentsProgram continues to expand.

Beginning this year, the Program is beingcoordinated by Ms Pam Welsh-Huggins, knownto many at Ready for her role as director of theLiturgical Choir. In addition to her musicalabilities and talents, Ms Welsh-Huggins brings abackground of teaching English as a foreignlanguage to her new position.

The six students—four juniors, onesophomore, and one freshman—hail fromvarious urban areas in China and are living in

Columbus with Ready students’ families. All sixare focused on improving their English languageskills, adapting to the different means oflearning and testing done in the US, andenhancing their prospects for admission tocolleges and universities here in this country.

Part of Ms Welsh-Huggins mandate asCoordinator is to see that each student works tothe best of her/his ability and that any “problemareas” are noted and addressed sooner ratherthan later. While the students have an electronic“translator” app that allows them to translateEnglish into Mandarin, one goal is to lessen thedependence of each student on this device. While it is still early days in the school year, much progress is being made through dailysessions that allow for individual attention toeach student’s concerns. An additional emphasisis placed on studying for the SAT/ACT; eachstudent wants to do well on these tests, as a goalis to continue their educations at Americancolleges and universities.

The students have all “adopted” new firstnames (their Chinese names are in parentheses):Mark (Yubo) Jin and Tom (Yizhuo) Zhangattended public schools in Columbus last yearand are juniors at Bishop Ready; Steven(Yingzheng) Fu and Mebius (Yuxiang) Sunattended school in their hometowns in China andare also juniors at Ready; Jack (Yanxiang) Zhangis a second-year Ready student, now asophomore; and Rebecca (Ruiyang) Xu is afreshman at Ready, having attended middleschool in her hometown of Nanchang. Jack, spending his second year at Ready and inColumbus, is the “old hand” at all things Ready. He finds that one of the biggest differences forhim between Columbus and his home town innorthern China is that “Columbus is cold!” Hefinds American school to be more interesting, inthat in class students can exchange ideas and talkabout subjects other than the subject being taught. You might say that Jack “fits right in”: he isserving as Vice President of the sophomore classon Ready’s Student Council.

The Program presents a “win-win” situationfor all concerned: the Chinese students improvetheir English language skills, learn how to “take”tests for college admission, and expand theircultural horizons. The American students atReady learn about cultural differences andcommonalities in a very concrete way andexpand their experience in relating to a broader,multi-cultural world.

The experience of living with Ready hostfamilies has proven to be beneficial both for thestudents and for the host families. While thestudents admit to missing some aspects of theirlives in China—family, friends, food—all alsoadmit to enjoying some new experiences:football, homecoming, volunteering at schoolevents. Additionally, the students are appreciativeof the extra help given to them, either in theirdaily sessions with Ms Welsh-Huggins or byindividual teachers.

This summer, Ready students will again bevisiting China, taking classes and visiting historicsites. For them, it is a brief taste of life far from

home. For our Chinesestudents, their time atReady is a microcosm of aworld they plan to inhabitfor several years to come. The Ready experience isthe foundation for thesestudents in the UnitedStates.

So far, the results havebeen favorable for allinvolved.

Catholic Schools’ Week CelebrationIncorporates Sculpture DedicationThe sun shone brightly. The weather was

spring-like. And a large contingent ofstudents from the Ready partner grade schoolshad arrived. All was ready and while everyonecouldn’t gather in the Wehinger Peace Courtyardas Bishop Campbell blessed the sculpture ofHomeless Jesus, everyone could hear the blessingas it was broadcast into the school gym. Earlierthat morning, Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalzhad delivered the model-size version, blessed byPope Francis, which “stood in” for the life-sizemodel, which will be placed in the Courtyard at afuture date.

This year’s Catholic Schools’ Week theme ofFaith, Knowledge, and Service seemed especiallyappropriate, given the dedication. For with faith inGod, knowledge of our surroundings and of ourown obligations, and service to others, we fulfillwhat the Homeless Jesus statue calls out to us:Acknowledge the least among us and do what isboth right and necessary to alleviate suffering andinstill hope and love.

The Bishop’s blessing included these words:“O God, who, being both good and almighty, provides for all creatures, give us, we pray, an

effective love for our brothers and sisters whosuffer hunger, disease, and poverty. United incharity, may compassion impel us to share allthings justly and to care for each other as brothersand sisters. Blessed be God now and forever.” TheGospel of St. Matthew was read, with the words“for I was hungry and you gave me food…astranger and you welcomed me…. Whatever youdid for one of these least brothers of mine, you didfor me.” Bishop Campbell concluded his blessingand dedication with this prayer: “We ask for yourblessing upon this image of Jesus. May this statuebe a reminder of our duty to be men and womenfor others. Instill in us a desire to live so that inserving them, we serve you. Dear Jesus, friend ofthe poor, we ask you to bless the homeless, thisday and every day, keep them from physical andemotional harm, fill their hearts with hope for thefuture. And let us be grateful for the opportunity tobe charitable to others.”

After the dedication, Bishop Campbell and theassembled priests concelebrated the liturgy for theassembled Ready students, partner school studentsand faculty members, and guests. Following theliturgy, and the “gifting” of the model-size statueto Bishop Campbell in the name of the artist andBishop Ready (a generous gift of the artisthimself), Bishop Campbell stopped by the pizzaluncheon for the grade school students.

Mr. Schmalz stayed after the liturgy and spokewith art class students, telling them about his early

days as an artist and encouraging them to followtheir passion, for nothing great is everaccomplished without passion, dedication, andperseverance.

For now, the model-size Homeless Jesusresides at Bishop Ready…until the full-scaleversion is delivered and placed outside.

A special thanks goes to Bishop Campbell andour pastors who helped to make this an extraspecial occasion; to sculptor Timothy Schmalz, who delivered the statue and spent time with ourstudents; and to the Ready and partner schoolstudents who participated in this event.

(Note: A “mini-version” of the Homeless Jesusstatue is available for sale through Bishop ReadyHigh School. An order form is available on page23 of this issue. For more information, includingavailability, please call Michelle Kelly at 614-276-7827.)

Ready Senior is Keynote Speaker

Ready senior Josephine Halko delivered thekeynote address at the 2014 Celebrating

Catholic School Virtues Gala held on November6. Proceeds from this Diocesan event go towardproviding need-based tuition assistance forstudents at Columbus diocesan elementary andhigh schools. Ready principal Celene A. Seamenintroduced Ms Halko who told her story:

“…You always hear how important donationsare and what they go to. Today, I am here to thankyou, to give a face to your donations, and to tellyou, first-hand, what your donations do and mean.I want you to know that your kindness does not goto just an institution, but to individual people whoare greatly appreciative. Your gifts go to gratefulstudents who want to change their lives for thebetter. My dream is to become a pediatric nursepractitioner…there is no way I could accomplishthis goal without having the excellent educationthat I have had from Catholic schools like BishopReady and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

“I have been fortunate enough to attendCatholic schools since kindergarten. And I sayfortunate, as I would not have been able to attendif it wasn’t for donations like yours. As one ofseven, I have a large family. Growing up was a lotof fun but we struggled financially. To make endsmeet, my mom often had two jobs while stillbeing a mother and homemaker, while my dadworked full-time. In 2006, our world was turnedupside-down when our mom was diagnosed withlung cancer. This took a toll on my entire family.

“Long story short, my mom passed away in2007, when I was 10 years old. We lost the personwho was our ‘go to’ for everything, our rock. Timeswere very hard and it fell on us as children to helptake care of things….A couple of years later wefound out how bad it really is when ends do notmeet financially. We received a letter of foreclosureon the house and we had to find a new place to live.

“How in the world were we supposed to payfor our education if we couldn’t even pay for ourhome? That is where all of you come in. Yourdonations, your selfless gifts, allowed my siblingsand me to remain students at Bishop Ready and

Our Lady of Perpetual Help. I was already in highschool at the time and the Ready family has beennothing but supportive and generous in helping.

“Our Lady continued their support andgenerosity as well with my little brothers. I’m sothankful they were able to stay at Our Ladybecause, due to living circumstances, I was notable to live at my dad’s and was unable to lookout for them anymore. I felt at ease knowing thatthe Our Lady family was watching over them.

Principal Celene A. Seamen and senior Josephine Halko

“The education that wehave all received has trulybeen a blessing…I want to thank you fromthe bottom of my heart…”

Boys’ Basketball Teams Help in the Community

Twenty members of the boys’ varsity and JVteams—all of the players—“teamed up” for a

good cause: Run the Race Club, a project of theBrian Muha Foundation. Team memberssponsored a food drive, helped unload donations, packed over 200 non-perishable items forThanksgiving delivery, assisted with setting updonated computers, and helped organize variousrooms at the center.

The Run the Race Club gathers childrentogether for free after school and Saturdayprograms. Some of the children who benefit fromthe Club have parents who are doing all they canto help their children succeed; other children haveadults in their lives who are making bad decisions

for themselves and for their children. The goal ofthe Run the Race Club is to have a Center “that isopen every day, ready to help children developmorally and intellectually, acquiring the virtuesand attitudes needed for everlasting happiness.”

Of invaluable help in setting up andmonitoring the Ready project was Ready “Mom”Melanie Feeney, wife of assistant coach DaveFeeney and parent to two Ready alums. Mrs.Feeney is also a volunteer at the Run the RaceCenter.

When a member of the Ready family sees aneed, the immediate response is to do somethingto alleviate that need. Congratulations to theReady teams, and coach Dan DeCrane: they reallyknow how to drive to the basket when it counts!
