Christopher Columbus, the ExplorerChristopher Columbus was an Italian
explorer from Geneva and he was the
discoverer of America. He was in search
of a westward route to Asia but his
calculations were wrong. Although, his
explorations were just as important as the
riches of of India or any other powerful
Asian countries.
Christopher Columbus is shown in the above image
aweing the Jamaican Natives about the lunar eclipse.
Early LifeThe archives of Genoa show that the
explorer was born Christoforo Columbo
between August and October of 1451.
Christopher grew up in a poor family, his
father was weaver and his mother came
from the same humble beginnings.
Growing up, Christopher had a mediocre
education and helped his father with
work. He went to sea as early as 14 and
looked older than he really was.

Christopher’s First Considerable VoyageChristopher Columbus was headed to
Aegean Island of Chios, but they were
attacked by a fleet of French ships; the
ship that Columbus was on had sank.
Christopher swam ashore in Lisbon,
Portugal where his brother Bartholomew
happened to live.
Christopher Columbus: Middle-AgeBy 1447, Columbus was settled in
Lisbon, which happened to be a
powerful city-state people who saw
fortunes tied to trade. Christopher’s
brother, Bartholomew, worked as a
mapmaker in Lisbon. The two
brothers worked together as book
collectors and draftsmen. That year,
Christopher set sail to northern
Atlantic cities to sell their goods.
Christopher Columbus: Middle-Age Continued...Christopher Columbus married
Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, who was
apart of a noble family in Portugal.
After their marriage, they settled
down in Porto Santo, which is where
Filipa Moniz Perstrelo’s brother was
governor. Christopher and Filipa had
a son named Diego and Filipa shortly
after died.
Formation of an IdeaShortly after Filipa’s death,
Columbus was in the process of
trying to find a westward route to
Asia. He underestimated the
Earth’s circumference little did he
know.
Propositions for His First VoyageIn 1484, Christopher Columbus
asked John the II of Portugal to pay
for his voyage. After being rejected,
Columbus moved to Spain with his
son Diego to try and persuade
Isabella of Castille and her husband,
Ferdinand of Aragon. They gave him
no attention and ignored his ideas.
Preparations for the First VoyageIn 1492, Columbus resumed
talking with rulers to pay for his
first voyage. Rulers did not want to
supply for his trip because
Christopher was demanding too
much. However, Queen Isabella
finally agreed to fund for his trip.

The DepartureChristopher Columbus set sail August
3, 1492. Weather was good,
Christopher Columbus actually said
the weather was “like April in
Andalusia.” He sailed for 36 days until
he finally found land.
Land Ho!On October 12, Columbus had
found land, which is modern day
San Salvador. Native Americans
flocked to the shore and made
friends with the Spaniards.
Columbus called the Native
Americans “Indians.” The other
ships found the Bahamas and
Christopher Columbus wanted to
return to Spain immediately.
The Return Christopher Columbus sailed back
to Spain safely, having the artifacts
he had brought from San Salvador
and bearing a few Native Americans
that he had forced to come. The
Pope granted Castille complete
rights west of the Atlantic Ocean.
Christopher Columbus: LegacyChristopher Columbus is regarded as
one of the greatest explorers to have
ever to live. He expanded the science
and trade industries of Europe, found
new resources that could be used in
Europe and other continents, and
started a new of exploration.
