T he next 30 pages contains thepictures of 34 varsity fall sportsteams from all of Sullivan

County’s eight school districts.There are several more teams whichwe couldn’t get in front of a camera,which would bring that total to 38teams.

That’s speaks well to the nearly500 student-athletes who will begracing our football fields, pitches,tennis courts and cross-countrycourses this fall.

We are delighted by the enthusi-asm we have seen at the severalgames which we have alreadyattended this year and would like toadd a few comments – namely to thefans.

We know that many of the mostrabid fans are family and friendswho want their kids to play well andwin.

Cheering is great but we urge thefans on the sidelines to rememberthat the athletes on the field can

hear you and yelling at the coaches,referees and players isn’t OK.

Not only do we need to rememberthat we are role modeling for ouryounger generation, but that thededicated coaches, referees and ath-letes are performing to the best oftheir abilities and deserve ourpraise – not ridicule.

Yes, we all love championship tro-

phies, sectional championships andpersonal records, but the real reasonwe have student-athletes is to teachthem the importance of teamwork,discipline, hard work and how todeal humbly with victory and gra-ciously with defeat.

Some of the greatest lessons welearned in high school sports didn’tcome from the championship teams

but rather the 1-6 year when we hadto give our best every day to try andimprove and perform better as anindividual and team.

We would like to thank our highschool coaches for all the lessonsthey taught us, all the trips theymade running us around and forbeing there for us whether we wonor lost. It truly meant a lot.

Team strengths: “Our team strength is how weplay as a unit. Everyone goes out there andtrusts their teammates.”

Where you need to improve: “I am sure wewill need to improve on some things but until westart playing games against other teams, I willnot know what they are. Each game will bring usnew ideas and new skills that we need to workon.

Season’s goals: Our goal is to compete for theSection 9 title. There are some quality teams inthe Class D division, so it is really up for grabs.

Key games: “League games against LivingtsonManor and Chapel Field are huge. Also playingSeward and Port Jervis will give us bigger schoolsto play and see how we measure up.”

Overall comment: “This year should be a lot offun. We have some young players coming upthat we need to mesh with our returners fromlast year. Once we all get on the same page, wewill be able to compete with any team we see onthe field. Last year was a great year for the Eldredsoccer program and we are hoping to keep it up.”

These young menlearned the same style of offensethat is being run at the varsitylevel when they were in elemen-tary school. There is more conti-nuity. The students who are ineighth-grade now will have hadthe opportunity to have partici-pated in the entire youth pro-gram, into modified, and onto JVand varsity.”

Team strengths: According toMartin, “playing together for so longgives them a true advantage. We're asmall school – we know each otherreally well and we have played soc-cer together for as long as we canremember.”

Where we need to improve: gain-ing experience for some ouryounger players.

Key games: Looking forward toplaying Tuxedo, who defeated theLady Bears last year in a muddy bat-tle that cost them a shot at section-als. But really, Ahl says, all divisionalgames are important. “We're famil-iar with those teams and there's alot more riding on those games inorder to make it to sectionals.”

Overall comment: “Half of thisyear's team has a lot of experience,while the other half has little or novarsity experience – but who have agood amount of talen. What I haveseen early in the season, at practices,is a team that is working to win.

“The older girls are working withthe younger girls – encouraging andpushing them to work hard. Oncewe get going, we should have a real-ly strong team.”

Despite increased knowledge on the subjectand advances in technology, concussions

among athletes who compete in contact sportshave been on the rise over the years. Concussions

can occur with any type of blow or jolt directly tothe head, or by a blow to the body that causes thehead to move rapidly backward and forward. Evenwithout the loss of consciousness, concussions areserious injuries that should be evaluated by a med-ical professional. It is important to recognize the

symptoms of a concussion.Common signs that an athlete has suf-

fered a concussion may include:

If a concussion is suspected, the athleteshould be immediately removed from the

playing field to undergo a complete medical exami-nation that will include a physical analysis, cogni-tive testing, and possibly a CT scan or MRI toobserve damage to the brain. The healthcare pro-fessional will determine when it is safe for the ath-lete to return to the playing field.

Immediately following a concussion, the athleteis typically placed on complete physical and cogni-tive rest until all symptoms have resolved. Onceasymptomatic, the 4th International Conference onConcussion in Sport held in Zurich (November2012), recommends that the athlete returns to playin graduated phases (~ 24 hours between eachphase), beginning with light aerobic exercise (<70% max heart rate), such as walking or stationarybiking. If no symptoms have returned with lightaerobic activity, the athlete can then advance tomore moderate intensity activities (i.e., jogging ormore intense stationary bike). The progressionthen continues on to more high intensity exercise,then to sport-specific drills, followed by full contactpractice, and finally returning to play (progression~ 1 week to return to play). If symptoms do arise atany stage along the road to recovery, the athleteshould regress to the previous level of activity thatwas symptom free.
