‘Jays look to stay healthy, become tougher team during 2013 seasonKEY NAMES

Thomas O’Neil, senior, QB — The senior quarterback is poised to have a breakout season. O’Neil, who threw for five touchdowns and 570 yards and rushed for six touchdowns and nearly 300 yards last season, is the hardest worker coach Brad Wendland has been around, Wendland said. He’ll look to put that hard work to good use this season.

Jake Busse, senior, OG/DT — Last year’s Waseca County News All-Area Football Defensive Co-Player of the Year is back and ready for a big year. The senior and three-year starter amassed 53 solo tackles (along with 21 assists) and compiled four sacks and a blocked punt while playing on both sides of the ball last season.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTENBrock Kolander — Kolander was the 2012 Bluejays’ star run-

ning back but was hampered by an injury throughout the season. The 2011 all-area player of the year still rushed for 507 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

Jacob Claybaugh — Claybaugh, who shared the all-area co-player of the year title with Busse in 2012, was a huge cog in the Bluejays’ defensive machine last year. He had 46 solo tackles, 14 assists, four sacks and a fumble recovery while playing on both sides of the ball.

UP AND COMINGLucas Johnson, senior, FS/WR — Johnson, who was one of

the Bluejays to suffer an injury last season, contributed mainly to the defensive end last season. The senior captain and free safety finished with 22 tackles and two interceptions, second-best on the team.

Jacob Laube, senior, CB/WR — Laube’s first season of playing varsity sports went pretty well: He tied for first in interceptions (three) and fourth on the team in tackles (40). Look for him to make more of an impact with a full season under his belt.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOKStay healthy and get tougher.

Those are two key facets of the game for the Waseca Bluejays this season after stumbling through an injury-riddled 3-6 cam-paign last year. Waseca amped up its physical conditioning in fall camp this year in an effort to win some of those close games that it couldn’t win last season.

The Bluejays have 13 seniors, including returners Thomas O’Neil, Jake Busse, Devin Williamson, Lucas Johnson and Jacob Laube, who are all expected to make an impact this season, as well as more than 20 juniors that create a deeper roster than in previous seasons.

Blue Earth Area, the defending Class AAA champions, are the favorites to win the South Central Conference, but Wendland puts the Bluejays among Fairmont and St. Peter as contenders. Waseca this season has moved to Section 2AAA, which it shares with returning state champion Hutchinson, as a result of this year’s section realignment. Still, the Bluejays hope to be one of the section contenders.

Waseca’s offense will be more up-tempo at times and balanced between run and pass. The defense will include more man cover-age than in the past with a larger blitz package, Wendland said.

FROM THE COACH: “We need to stay healthy and be a tougher team than we have

been. I really like the potential of leadership exhibited thus far in practice. ey have been working hard and a pleasure to coach.” – Brad Wendland

FROM A PLAYER: “I’m expecting to do better (than last season). Even though our

section’s hard, I feel like we still can compete.” – Devin Williamson

2013 Bulldogs hope to improve on 3-6 record

KEY NAMESIan Jewison, senior, RB/LB –

Jewison returns as one of Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton’s top players this season aer nishing his junior year with 537 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Jewison also had ve two-point conversions.

Sawyer Gahler, senior, QB/DB – Gahler will look to follow up a tre-mendous junior season – 1,460 pass-ing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, 934 yards and 14 rushing touch-downs – during his senior year on a team he expects to be improved. Gahler also threatens kicko teams as an elusive returner.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Tyler Oelke – e all-conference senior was one of only two players in the Waseca area to make the rst or second team on the Waseca County News All-Area Football Oensive and Defensive teams. As a receiver, he caught 344 yards’ worth of passes and four touchdowns. And on de-fense, he led the area with ve in-terceptions.

Joe Galler – Despite missing four games last season, Galler earned the designation of JWP’s most valu-able defensive player for collecting 40 solo tackles and 13 assists. He made the WCN’s All-Area Football Defensive Second Team.

UP AND COMINGEaston Schuch, junior, G/

DT – As a sophomore last season, Schuch had 34 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery for the Bulldogs. e 6-foot junior is back this season as an upperclassman.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

It’s a new season for Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, in more ways than one.

For one, the 9-man Bulldogs have a new head coach in Joe Joyce, who was an assistant coach under Merle Sveen last season. Secondly, Joyce and the coaching staff have added new oensive and defensive systems to the Bulldogs’ repertoire. e team also has honed its skills during the summer more than in previous oseasons.

So it is that the Bulldogs look to improve this season. They fin-ished 3-6 last season, losing some close battles, but hope to turn things around this year. Senior Sawyer Gahler, who led the team’s oense last season, is back again to punish defenses. e team also has return-

ing starters in running back/line-backer Ian Jewison (537 yards, four

rushing TDs) and guard/defensive tackle Easton Schuch (34 tackles,

two sacks, fumble recovery). e Bulldogs are expected to boast a

little bit quicker, speedier lineup than the previous season, team members said.

While Nicollet is the Southern Confederacy Conference East fa-vorite, Joyce expects the Bulldogs can nish in the top half of the con-ference, a feat they haven’t managed in recent history. And as if there weren’t already enough change, the Bulldogs have moved up to Class A this season, meaning they’ll play 11-man football come playo time.

FROM THE COACH:“Right now, (our team style is)

just going to be whatever the de-fensive gives us, we’re going to try to take it. We feel that our oensive system is going to give us a chance to exploit – if they’re taking away the run, we think we can pass on them; take away the pass, think we can run. We may be a team that runs 50 times a game, we may be a team that passes 50 times a game, and I guess time will tell on that, es-pecially by Week 3 we should have a little better feel on that.” – Joe Joyce

FROM A PLAYER: “I think we really can (turn

things around). I like this new system and I think we’re all get-ting it down and trying to ex-ecute our plays in practice. We’ll see how it goes in games.” – Ian Jewison

downs. He also racked up 103 re-ceiving yards and a touchdown.

Casey Rosacker — The se-nior quarterback threw for nearly 700 yards and three touchdowns in his rst season starting at the position. He also rushed for just more than 100 yards and a touch-down.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

The Panthers struggled to just one win in nine games last season, but 2013 is a new year.

New Richland-Hartland-Ellen-dale-Geneva, which lost quarter-back Casey Rosacker, wide receiver Nic Mangskau and running back Brad Claycomb a er its rst losing season in seven years, is hoping to again nish with a winning record this season but will take things one game at a time, head coach Dan Stork said. e team returns eight starters from last season.

e Panthers return with stand-out lineback Dillon Parpart, who earned a spot on the 2012 Waseca County News All-Area Football De-fensive First Team last season for his 46 solo tackles, 48 assists and ve sacks. He’ll be expected to lead an attacking defense this season.

NRHEG’s o ense, which prides itself on being versatile, Stork said,

will be predicated on what the de-fense gives it.

FROM THE COACH:

“I think we have the potential to be solid up front and we have some good kids that work very hard and play together as a unit. is team has some good leaders in the senior

class. — Dan Stork

WEM FOOTBALLBucs lose some talent but hope to continue winning ways

KEY NAMESBen Boran, junior, QB – Boran will

return this season looking to build on a successful sophomore campaign in which he threw for 528 passing yards and eight touchdowns and scrambled for 450 rush-ing yards and seven more touchdowns. e all-conference quarterback will be a key piece of Waterville-Elysian-Morris-town’s o ense this season.

Will Olson, senior, OG – Olson, a senior captain, is the only other all-con-ference returner on this year’s team (team-mate Nick Amundson was an all-confer-ence honorable mention) and is one of four returning players to the o ensive line. On the defensive end, Olson had 24.5 total tackles and was in on a sack last season.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Brady Ayers – The Waseca County News All-Area O ensive Football Player of the Year was a punishing running back who rushed for 1,313 yards and 23 touch-downs last season. Ayers led the Bucs to the Section 2AA title game, where they lost to Sibley East.

Brady Melchert – e senior linebacker last season led the team with 59.5 total tack-les, three sacks and a blocked kick – good enough stats to give him a spot on the Waseca County News All-Area Football De-fensive First Team. He helped the Bucs on the other side of scrimmage, too: Melchert rushed for four touchdowns and 130 yards.

UP AND COMINGPatrick Parsons, senior, RB – Parsons

is a senior captain this season who’s com-ing o a year where his main contributions came on the defensive end: He had 28 tack-les, putting him fourth-best on the team.

Colin Ayers, senior, RB – e younger brother of Brady Ayers played in seven games last season and rushed for 13 yards a game. He also scored a touchdown.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK e 2012 version of Waterville-Elysian-

Morristown continued doing what it had

done for several previous seasons.Winning. e Buccaneers were led by a talented

crop of seniors, including standout Brady Ayers, who helped them march to their h straight Gopher Valley AA crown and into the Section 2AA title game, where they were a touchdown and extra point away from earning their third state tournament berth in the last ve years.

Last year’s skilled wide receivers, talented running backs and punishing line-backers are gone, but the Bucs return starting quar-terback Ben Boran and a core of four lineman – Will Olson, Tanner Henninger, Hunter Morsching and Nick Amundson – to help the team to try to pick up where it left off. The Bucs expect to contend for a sixth straight conference title and get a shot at the section title.

Longtime coach Jon Bakken expects Med-ford and Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial to vie for the top spots in the conference, too, but they’ll have to unseat the Bucca-neers, who haven’t lost a conference game since 2009.

WEM will look to drive the ball down the eld with a group of linemen who like to run block, Bakken said. Filling the other

skill player positions, however, is a need entering the season.

FROM THE COACH: “We try to win every game, and (we

have been) fairly successful in the past. I think it’ll be more of a challenge. … We’ll have good games, starting with (Tri-City

United) next Friday (Aug. 30). ey’ll be tough.” — Jon Bakken

FROM A PLAYER: “I think we have a very very good

chance at winning conference. We should make a good push in playo s.” — Ben Bo-ran

WASECA GIRLS SOCCERBluejays have conference title, big playo hopes for 2013 seasonKEY NAMES

Brittany Miller, senior, A — Waseca’s o ense ran through Brittany Miller last season. e all-conference attacker scored 22 goals in 16 games, ranking her among the state’s top goal-scorers at one point in the season. e scary part: She’s hoping – and expected – to score more this year.

Sam Hiller, junior, D — Hiller, an all-conference player as a sophomore last season, is the team’s defensive leader and one of its best defenders. She also doled out three assists while patrolling the defense in 2012.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTENSamantha Myers — Myers was an all-conference defender for

the Bluejays last season. Her spot will be one the Bluejays look to ll.Bailey Wol — Wol held her own in net, nishing with an .858

save percentage (223-for-260) and allowing two goals per game dur-ing her senior year. She earned all-conference honors as a senior, too.

UP AND COMINGLinsey Johnson, junior, G — Johnson is the player the Bluejays

have tapped to ll Wol ’s spot. She gained bene cial experience playing as the Waseca Soccer Club’s U17 girls goalie throughout the season. e team went to the state championship and lost to St. Peter.

Elizabeth Strand, sophomore, A — Strand also played on that U17 girls team, gaining valuable playing time in preparation for the season. She’s already made an impact early this season and will look to continue helping the Bluejays as they work to improve.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK e Bluejays squeaked out their rst winning record in program

history last season but nished with a losing record against South Central Conference opponents.

With a core of nine returning starters from last year’s 9-8-1 team, including leading scorer Brittany Miller, the Bluejays have their eyes set on battling New Ulm and St. Peter for the conference crown. Even more, they hope for their rst state tournament berth in school history. Waseca’s season came to a close last year in the second round of the

playo s against Mankato West, the same team that had ended the Bluejays season in 2011.

While the o ense ran through Miller last year, this season the Bluejays will look to tuck away those long, predictable passes up eld and play a more methodical style of soccer, moving the ball quickly with short touches and constant movement. At the same time, the Bluejays will keep their aggressive mentality on o ense and defense.

FROM THE COACH: “Our motivation is we didn’t end the season the way we wanted

to. We had a bunch of opportunities last year to win the conference and we didn’t come through on it. We have to go out there and take advantage of every opportunity we have because you never know which one is going to be your last.” – Mila Pires

FROM A PLAYER: “We’re all aggressive players this year. We work really well together.

Most of us were on the U17 team and some girls played up with us. We all pretty much know how everyone plays and we’re used to each other. And we’ve all got that good chemistry and we’re coming out

strong.” – Brittany Miller

WASECA BOYS SOCCER2013 looks like a bright year for Waseca boys

KEY NAMESJosh Metzdorff, senior, G

— The Bluejays have security in net. The all-conference goal-keeper and senior captain has played in the most games (49) in school history, is the program’s current saves leader (316) and leads in career goals against av-erage (1.77).

Cesar Gallegos, junior, M — Gallegos was a constant threat to score a goal last season as a sophomore midfielder. His play helped him earn an all-confer-ence honorable mention nod last season.

Bluejays defenders — All-Conference players and seniors Collin Rongstad and Ben John-son are back, along with senior starter Andy Haley, to lead a strong Waseca defense this sea-son.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Cody Hyatt — The all-con-ference midfielder and 2012 Team MVP was a huge part of the Bluejays’ success last season. Waseca will miss not only his leadership, but his deep over-head throws from the sidelines.

Tucker Ulrich — Ulrich capped his senior year as the second-leading all-time scorer in Waseca High School history. The midfielder/forward also, not surprisingly, earned all-conference honors his senior season.

UP AND COMINGCristian Castro, freshman,

F — Four games into the sea-son, Castro already has harassed opposing defenses for six goals. Look for the skilled freshman to make a lot of noise this season.

Gabriel Arreguin, sopho-more, F — Arreguin, who didn’t

play much varsity last year, had a stellar summer racking up goals with the Waseca Soccer Club’s U17 boys team. He’s another force to watch out for this sea-son.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

The lights are bright for Waseca soccer.

After finishing the best sea-son in school history last year, the Bluejays did more reload-ing than rebuilding in 2013. Waseca is back with the kind

of experienced lineup that has head coach Terry Nafe thinking the program will repeat as South

Central Conference champions and will have a shot at contend-ing for the title in Section 2A, which boasts larger opponents such as Mankato West, Mankato East and Worthington.

In total, 15 letter winners have returned from last year’s team, which won a share of the conference and lost in the Section 2A quarterfinals on an overtime penalty kick. Plus, the Bluejays have a slew of incoming underclassmen who will push for playing time and add to the roster depth.

With speed and quickness in this year’s lineup, the Bluejays are expected to have a strong, deep core of attacking players and a stalwart defense, espe-cially in the midfield.

FROM THE COACH: “This year I believe we have

the talent and experience to re-peat as South Central Confer-ence champions in 2013. I also expect us to win 10 or more games in the regular season. We have a good chance at earn-ing a top four seed in Section 2A and contending for the sec-tion championship. We should have the combination of defense and attack that will allow us to compete with the larger schools in our section … in October.” – Terry Nafe

FROM A PLAYER: “Win the conference again.

Maybe go on after that.” — Ben Johnson, on his expectations.

WASECA VOLLEYBALLCentral Conference champions and will have a shot at contend-ing for the title in Section 2A, which boasts larger opponents such as Mankato West, Mankato East and Worthington.

KEY NAMESQuinn Harguth, senior, OH

— e 5-foot-6-inch senior out-side hitter is the only returning player who played consistently all the way around for the Bluejays last season. She nished with 136 digs, 66 kills and 29 aces in her ju-nior season and will look to lead the team this season.

Shelby Bomsta, senior, L — Bomsta earned all-conference honors for her team-high 235 digs and 17 aces last year during a sea-son in which the Bluejays stumbled to a 6-17 record. e 5-foot-2-inch libero is back as a senior captain this season.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Anne Guse — e tall middle blocker collected 65 kills and a team-best 51 blocks last season, numbers that helped her earn an all-conference honorable mention nod. e Bluejays will look to re-place her void near the net.

Katie Miller — Miller, who made the 2012 Waseca County News All-Area Second Team, n-ished her senior year at middle blocker with 72 kills, 42 blocks and 21 aces. She was one of the most productive Bluejays last season.

UP AND COMINGMackenzie Madsen, junior,

OH/MH — e 5-foot-11-inch senior outside and middle hitter has worked hard in the oseason and will look to make signi-cant contributions this season, according to coach Karen Sim-mons.

Mikayla Rolling, junior, UTIL — Rolling is the team’s best overall athlete and will be looked upon as a setter and a de-fensive specialist for the Bluejays this year, Simmons said. She’ll pitch in wherever she’s needed.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

A quick look back in the his-tory books shows that Waseca’s best record in recent history came in 2005, when the Bluejays nished 10-10. Since then, the program has had a streak of sub-par seasons and losing records.

The Bluejays aren’t saying they’re looking for a winning re-cord this year, but coach Karen Simmons is hoping to improve on last year’s 6-17 nish. Simmons, who coached the team for six sea-sons from 1985 to 1990, is back at the helm this year aer former coach Kelli Fagerness resigned af-ter the 2012 season.

e team’s strength lies in its eight seniors and seven returning starters, including Quinn Harguth, Shelby Bomsta, Jordan Paulson and Lexi Shiett, Simmons said. e Bluejays will look to become quicker and improve their attack this season.

Waseca finished 2-8 in the South Central Conference last season (Blue Earth Area and St. Peter nished in the top two spots) but Simmons hopes the team can nish in the upper half of the con-ference this year.

FROM THE COACH: “We are working very hard at

having quicker feet and having a more powerful and consistent attack. We want to be scrappy and be in every match.” – Karen Simmons

FROM A PLAYER: “Going into it as a senior, my

expectations that I have are pretty big for this year. I’m pretty excited for it. I think we should be a team that works very well together.” – Quinn Harguth

Bulldogs aiming for improvement during 2013

KEY NAMESCallie Morton, senior, MH

– Morton is a four-year varsity player and the only returning se-nior starter for the Bulldogs, who have struggled in recent seasons. is season she’ll be moved from the outside to one of the middle hitter positions because of her quickness and jumping ability. Morton had 97 kills, 169 digs and 49 blocks last season.

Kennedy Strauss, junior, OH – e athletic junior is a strong server and accurate passer who can hit from anywhere on the floor, coach Roxann Zimprich said. Strauss had 51 kills and 56 blocks as a sophomore last sea-son. She also served 12 aces.

Danielle Ziemke, junior, S – e three-year varsity player and junior brings passion and vo-cal leadership to the oor for the Bulldogs, Zimprich said. Ziemke had the second-most set assists (107) on the team behind graduated senior Hannah Herold (116) last season.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTENKara Southwick – e graduated senior was the Bulldogs’ all-around

best player last season, nishing the nal season of her career with 58 blocks, 120 kills and 26 aces. e middle hitter made the Waseca County News All-Area Second Team.

Madison Krautbauer – Krautbauer also made the WCN’s All-Area Team as an honorable mention aer nishing her senior year with 29 solo blocks, 76 assisted blocks, 60 kills and a team-high 28 aces.

UP AND COMINGHannah Olson, sophomore, S, RH: Zimprich expects Olson to bring

“a new level of play to our team” this season with her quick hands, serving and court awareness, she said. Olson didn’t play much as a freshman.

Hannah Boyer, junior, RH: Boyer is one of ve returning starters for the Bulldogs this season who will look to make an impact. As a sophomore last season, Boyer had 57 set assists, nine kills and 57 blocks. And she has a “mean swing from the right side,” Zimprich said.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOKe 2011 and 2012 seasons were down years for the Bulldogs, to say

the least. Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton won a combined three games in those two years.

But this year, the Bulldogs hope to be back on the upswing. Coach Roxann Zimprich, in her seventh season as varsity coach at JWP, hopes the Bulldogs will nish in the middle of the Gopher Conference, a feat they last achieved in 2010 with a sixth-place nish in the Gopher Conference. Teams such as Faribault Bethlehem Academy, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, Medford and Blooming Prairie are expected to vie for the top spots in the conference.

e Bulldogs have ve return-ing starters this season, including lone returning senior starter Cal-lie Morton, who will look to help ll the roles of the seven graduated seniors from last season.

ey won’t be a tall team, but the Bulldogs will make up for it in quickness and awareness, Zimprich said. Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton expects to have solid hitters who have leaping ability, quick setters, and a quicker back row than in years past.

FROM THE COACH: “The girls have been playing

ball all summer and they have been working really hard the past

two weeks. It will be fun to see (if) they can use what they’ve learned in practice. Aer 17 years of pre-game jitters there’s nothing like the rst kill of the season to put those jitters to rest.” – Roxann Zimprich

NRHEG VOLLEYBALLPanthers hope for top-3 nish in conference

KEY NAMES(All comments from coach

Onika Peterson)Carlie Wagner — Carlie, a

three-year starter for NRHEG brings a lot to the table for us. What people tend to overlook is her competitiveness, she wants to win so much it carries over to her teammates bringing their game to the next level. She is a power-ful middle hitter who lead us in kills, blocks, and digs last season.

Paige Overgaard — Paige started for us last year as an out-side hitter. Her attack is hard to read which allows her to get the kill. She is a very versatile player who may see some time playing all the way around this season.

Hannah Lundberg — Han-nah’s scrappiness is her best con-tribution to the team. She will never give up on the ball and is always giving her best eort.

Anna Stork — Anna is go-ing to be a big help this season spreading our hitters across the net. She is a strong ley who will turn some heads this year.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Noelle Bartness — Bartness was a three-year varsity starter and two-time all-conference setter who holds the top two single-season assist marks with 882 in 2011 and 695 in 2012. She’s also second in the pro-gram’s history in career assists (1,722).

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

An athletic Panthers lineup is looking for improvement in the Gopher Conference.

After finishing 10-16-3 last season and 3-5 in the confer-ence, New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva returns three

seniors in Carlie Wagner, Paige Overgaard and Hannah Lund-berg who will look to help boost the Panthers in the conference standings. NRHEG is shoot-ing for a top three finish and hopes to make a trip to Gus-tavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, the site of some of the final rounds of the sub-section playoffs.

NRHEG also has a new coach in Onika Peterson, who has taken over for Joe Kuech-enmeister. Peterson’s Panthers boast some explosive hitters but will need consistency in their serve receive to set up them up. Defensively, NRHEG is a quick, scrappy team that “will fight to get every ball,” Peterson said.

FROM THE COACH: “With this group’s athletic

ability and competitive atti-

tude I think we will end stron-ger than last season.” — Onika Peterson

WEM VOLLEYBALL

WASECA GIRLS TENNISBucs shooting for one of top spots in Gopher Conference this season

KEY NAMESKalley Kendall, senior, OH/MH – The senior co-captain re-

turns from an ankle injury that sidelined her for four weeks last season to become one of the Buccaneers’ go-to hitters this season. Kendall tallied 141 kills and 39 ace blocks despite last season’s injury. She’s playing through back pain from two herniated disks that are pressing on a nerve, she said, but she expects to be back fully this season.

Kamryn Kendall, sophomore, OH/MH – Kendall, the other co-captain, made a surge in the second half of last season to become an offensive weapon for the Buccaneers as a freshman. The athletic hitter finished with 154 kills, third-most on the team. WEM coach Crystal Lamont looks for her to become one of the top hitters in the conference this season.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTENShayna Kinniry – Last year’s Waseca County News All-Area

Volleyball Player of the Year set school records for single-season kills (300), career kills (797) and career digs (547) while leading the Buccaneers to one of their best seasons in school history.

Brittany Buesgens – Buesgens, one of seven other seniors on last year’s team, also made the all-area first team as a hitter with 257 digs and 169 kills. She also had 21 blocks. Buesgens was all-conference in 2012 and 2011.

UP AND COMINGTiffany Schlueter, senior, RH – The 5-foot-7-inch senior will

start at the right-side hitter position this season but could play in the front-row spots for the Bucs, Lamont said. Schlueter last season had nine kills and three blocks in 26 games.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOKThis Buccaneers’ team boasts strength in numbers. After a season in which the Bucs finished with the second most

wins in school history (23) and as the Section 2AA South runners-up (tied for the second-best finish in school history), WEM returns with a more balanced offense and a more versatile lineup, coach Crystal Lamont said. It’s the deepest team they’ve had in Lamont’s seven-year tenure as coach, she said, giving the coaching staff plenty of options for the season.

No surprise, then, that they have lofty goals for the season: The Bucs place themselves with Faribault Bethlehem Academy, Medford and Blooming Prairie as the top teams in the conference and hope to finish in one of the top two spots. They also hope to win the sub-section this season, an achievement they fell just short of last season.

The Bucs lost a talented crop of eight seniors, including Waseca County News All-Area Player of the Year Shayna Kinniry, who helped lead the team’s front line last season. But with returners such as Kalley and Kamryn Kendall, WEM will look to make a splash again.

FROM THE COACH: “We have a very offensive-minded team. We are working hard

to develop that defensive scrappiness that turns teams from good teams into great teams. If they figure that out we should have a successful season.” — Crystal Lamont

FROM A PLAYER: “I’m really hoping for (a sub-section championship). We have

a really strong team this year, passing and hitting. We’re a young team but we should do well.” — Kalley Kendall

KEY NAMESOlivia McIntosh, senior, sin-

gles – e only returning senior starter from last season, McIntosh went 22-3 at No. 2 doubles last season with graduated senior Bai-ley Krueger. She is now playing as a singles player. McIntosh, an all-conference player last season, had lost only 13 matches in her career entering the 2013 season.

Maddie Muotka, junior, singles – Muotka is the reigning Team MVP and an all-conference returner a er nishing the season 21-2 at No. 3 singles and helping the Bluejays to third place at the Class A Tournament. She’s now the team’s No. 1 singles player.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Alicia Knoll – Knoll was the team’s No. 2 singles player and one of nine all-conference players last season. She went 18-2 last season to help Waseca to one of its best nishes in school history.

Abbe Hoehn – Hoehn was another big reason why the Blue-jays nished so well. Along with Shanly Nelson, who also gradu-ated, Hoehn held down the No. 1 doubles spot and earned all-con-ference honors. She went 22-3 at No. 1 doubles.

UP AND COMINGKatie Tlusty, junior, dou-

bles – Tlusty was one of the nine all-conference players on the team as a sophomore last season. She helped the Bluejays nish 21-2 at No. 3 doubles and has made a big leap up to No. 1 doubles this season, where she plays with all-conference returner Maddy Knoll, Alicia’s younger sister.

Anna Hoehn, sophomore, singles – Hoehn, like many other of the returning Bluejays

this season, is playing at a higher level: A er nishing 14-10 at No. 4 singles in her rst varsity season last year, Hoehn jumped up to No. 2 singles this season.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

Last year’s crop of Bluejays, which included seven seniors, le big shoes to ll.

Waseca’s girls tennis team achieved one of its best seasons in school history, winning the South Central Conference title from St. James Area, marching to the Section 2A Championship for a fourth straight year and earning third place at the Class A Tourna-ment.

ose seniors are now gone, and the returners are being asked to play at least two spots higher than they did last season. Still, Waseca will look to defend its South Central Conference title this season and contend for the Section 1A title with another fa-vorite in Rochester Lourdes.

e young Bluejays, who have only two seniors this season, will look for consistency in their sin-gles players and good commu-nication in their doubles teams, coach Kyle Collins said. ey’ll also need patience, he said.

FROM THE COACH: “We gotta keep working at

it and improving each day and each match. We play this tough non-conference schedule to get us ready for the conference teams.” – Kyle Collins

FROM A PLAYER:“I think we have a chance at

WASECA BOYS CROSS COUNTRY‘Jays ranked No. 2 to start 2013 season

KEY NAMESShane Streich, junior — A er nishing

third overall at the Class A meet last sea-son, Streich returns to the course as the No. 1-ranked runner in the state. e junior will undoubtedly lead the Bluejays in every race this season (if all goes according to plan), and the team hopes he’ll bring home a state title this season.

Jesse Delgado, sophomore — More of-ten than not, Delgado was the second Blue-jay to cross the nish line last season. He earned all-conference honors as a freshman and helped the boys team earn a third-place nish at the Class A meet last year.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Dan Livdahl — The only senior on last season’s team nished in 142nd place (17:57.2) at the state meet. Livdahl nished toward the back of Waseca’s lineup but did help the Bluejays score some points during the season.

UP AND COMINGCole Streich, freshman — Shane St-

reich’s younger brother is expected to make a big impact this season a er earning all-conference honors as an eighth-grader. Cole Streich was the team’s fourth runner to cross the nish line at the Class A meet – he took 90th place (17:20.2) – to help push the Blue-jays to a third-place nish.

Jacob Wilkening, junior — e then-sophomore wasn’t one of Waseca’s top run-ners during the bulk of the season, but he turned it on toward the end when he n-ished as the h Bluejay to cross the nish line at the Section 2A meet and at state. He’ll look to build on last year’s strong nishes.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK e Bluejays’ hopes for this season are

sky high.A er surprising the eld with a third-

place nish at the Class A Cross Country Meet at St. Olaf College last season, Waseca returns nearly all of its top runners in Shane Streich, Josh Kimball, Jesse Delgado, Cole Streich, Joe Mens and Jacob Wilkening. at success has given them the designation of the No. 2-ranked team in Class A. Not to

mention, Shane Streich is ranked as the top runner in Class A.

Waseca this year is hoping to extend its conference title streak to ve consecutive years while again nishing as one of the top three teams at the state meet. Along with a strong No. 1 runner, the Bluejays boast a solid top ve to six runners and will have some depth through the top 10 or 11 athletes, according to coach Gary Meurer.

Again this season, the Bluejays have only one se-nior (Kimball), which means they likely won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

FROM THE

COACH: “First of all for the boys, to have

Shane (Streich), Shane’s going to win a lot of races and his brother, Cole, has

improved immensely. Cole is going to turn heads.” — Gary MeurerFROM A PLAYER:

“To have all ve runners hopefully

No. 2 ‘Jays look to build on last year’s CC success

KEY NAMESSadie Klug, senior — e all-conference returner

was one of the top two runners on a Waseca team that, at one point in the season, ranked No. 1 in the state. Klug returns for her nal year aer placing 26th (15:28.2) at the Class A meet last year.

Sally O’Brien, junior — If Klug wasn’t the rst Bluejay to cross the nish line, O’Brien was. Help-ing give Waseca a potent 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup, the all-conference sophomore nished right behind Klug in 27th place (15:29.7) at the state meet and will look for another big season this year.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTENMackenzie Burke — e senior wasn’t one of

the team’s top runners, but she frequently contrib-uted points to the lineup. She ran a

16:36.1 (127th place) at the Class A meet to score points for the Bluejays.

UP AND COMINGKourtney Kulseth, freshman — Kulseth had a

great showing at the end of her eighth-grade year: e all-conference runner ran her way into ninth place overall (15:36.8) to help the ‘Jays win the Sec-tion 2A meet and crossed the nish line behind Klug and O’Brien to take 70th place (15:54.7) at the Class A meet.

Allison Breck, sophomore — Breck is another example of the team’s young, deep talent. She helped score points in both the Section 2A meet (11th place) and the state meet (90th place) and will look to make another impact this season.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

e then top-ranked Bluejays expected big things when they reached the Class A meet at St. Olaf Col-lege last season.

But the eld of competition seemed to slip by the perennial Section 2A champions, and Waseca landed itself in fourth place, one spot shy of nishing on the awards stage.

e loss of one senior last season means the Blue-jays reloaded this year. And with a core of returning runners, including Sadie Klug, Sally O’Brien, Kourt-ney Kulseth and Allison Breck, who were known for nishing in a cluster last season, No. 2-ranked Waseca hopes to make it up on that stage in November.

Waseca is the hands-down conference favorites aer taking the South Central Conference crown for eight consecutive seasons. e team also will look for its h consecutive section title this year.

FROM THE COACH: “Our girls, right now our top ve are very, very

solid.” – Gary Meurer

New faces expected to help lead Grizzlies lineup this seasonKEY NAMES

Nick Jewison, junior – Coach Kyle Asp expects Jewison, who wasn’t competing on the team last season, to be the team’s top runner this season. Jewison ran distance for Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton’s track and field team last spring.

Brennen Mogensen, junior – Mogensen is a returning letter winner who also found some success running track and field at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton last spring. He was billed as the cross country team’s athlete to watch entering last season.

UP AND COMINGTuckor Anderson, sophomore – Anderson led the incomplete

Grizzlies boys team at the Section 2A meet by running a 20:48.4 to finish in 107th place overall as a freshman last season. Anderson also finished in 57th place (21:46) at the Gopher Conference meet and will look to build off of those times this season.

Aaron Zimmer, senior – Zimmer is one of two seniors and four returning letter winners looking to make an impact again this season. He took 53rd place (21:22) at the Gopher Confer-ence meet – the best finish of the day for WEM/JWP – and ran a 21:10.6 at the Section 2A meet, good for 114th place.

Morristown team is looking forward to welcoming some new faces.

The strength of this year’s team will be in its newcomers, who make up three of the top five varsity runners this season, coach Kyle Asp said. Asp thinks the team could improve from last season to finish in one of the top four spots in the conference this season. The Grizzlies had only three runners at the Gopher Conference and Section 2A meets last season, leaving them with an incomplete in the box score.

Nick Jewison is expected to be the team’s top runner this season, Asp said, joining returning letter winners Brennen Mo-gensen, Sam Larson, Tuckor Anderson and Aaron Zimmer. The team’s weakness, however, will be its depth, Asp said.

FROM THE COACH: “I do think we will surprise some people both in the girls and

boys team.” – Kyle Asp

FROM A PLAYER: “My goal for my team, well a specific one, is I would really

like it for the boys to win the Blooming Prairie meet. I would also like at least the top 4 runners on our team to get below 20 (minutes).” — Brennen Mogensen

Standout runner Winter back again to help propel Grizzlies in 2013

KEY NAMESTierney Winter, sophomore – Winter is the team’s top runner and

has been for several years. She returns as a sophomore this season aer running at the state cross country meet in previous seasons. She ran a 15:37.1 to nish in 39th place at state last season aer making all-state (she took eighth place) as an eighth-grader.

Lily Anderson, sophomore – Anderson is another strong runner and returning letter winner on the girls team who will look to help lead Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton this season. Anderson nished in 52nd place (17:01:4) at the Section 2A meet last season.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTENCassie Rezac – Rezac was the third WEM/JWP runner to cross the

nish line at the Section 2A meet last October. She ran a 17.17.2 to nish in 59th place, seven spots behind Anderson. Rezac also nished in 24th place at the Gopher Conference meet.

UP AND COMINGSamantha Becker, junior – Becker had a solid showing toward

the end of the season for the WEM/JWP girls by nishing the Section 2A meet in 69th place (17:40) and taking 46th (19:33) at the Gopher Conference meet.

Jacqueline Kaplan, junior – Kaplan was right there, too, nishing eight spots ahead of Becker at the Gopher Conference meet in 38th place (18:53) while taking 88th (18:15.5) at the Section 2A meet.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOKCoach Kyle Asp expects bigger things out of the Janesville-Wal-

dorf-Pemberton/Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Grizzlies this season.Last year, the Grizzlies ran their way into sixth place in the Gopher

Conference and ninth place at the Section 2A meet. e team was led by freshman and former all-state runner Tierney Winter, who went on to nish in 39th place at the Class A meet at St. Olaf College in Northeld.

is season, Asp thinks the girls team could place top four in the conference – maybe even win it, he said. e team has an already

established top runner in Winter and will have strong depth, he said. e team returns letter winners in Winter, Lily Anderson, Jacqueline Kaplan, Lynnea Asp, Samantha Becker, Amber Volkmann and Zoe Zimmer.

Asp also expects the Grizzlies will have a strong junior varsity squad of runners.

FROM THE COACH:“I do think we will surprise some people both in the girls and

boys team.” – Kyle Asp

FROM A PLAYER: “I am expecting our team to do fantastic this season. I think we

have a very high potential girls team. We have been working very

hard and i am hoping it will pay o during conference and sections. I am hoping to win conference and lace within the top 4 or even make it to state at sections. at would be amazing.” — Tierney Winter

Schiltz to lead Panthers’ boys core, Lewer girls during NRHEG’s 2013 seasonsKEY NAMES

TJ Schiltz, senior — e all-state runner and No. 9-ranked runner in Class A will look to have his best season yet. A top-10 nish at the Class A meet at St. Olaf College isn’t out of the question for Schiltz, coach Mike Weber said. Schiltz nished in 17th place at the Class A meet last season and won the Gopher Conference title.

Katharine Lewer, sophomore — Lewer is the only returning all-con-ference runner on the girls team. e sophomore and reigning Team MVP will look to lead the Panthers on the course this season.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTENCrystal Olson — Olson was a senior captain and the Panthers’ second

or third runner to cross the nish line last season. NRHEG will miss her leadership, Weber said.

Dustin Burshem — Burshem was a hard worker and had been a captain for a season, according to Weber.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOKNew Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva will return its top girl and

boy runner this season as it looks to improve.Last year, the boys team, led by senior TJ Schiltz, took ninth at the con-

ference meet and nished 15th at the section competition. e Panthers have their sights set on nishing closer to the middle of the pack in the conference.

On the girls side, Katharine Lewer is back and coach Mike Weber hopes she can repeat as an all-conference runner for NRHEG. e Panthers lost a senior captain in Crystal Olson, but the team has ve returning letter win-ners and other new faces who could be a surprise. NRHEG nished ninth in the conference and 19th at the section meet last year.

FROM THE COACH: “Our runners will be led by TJ Schiltz, a returning All-conference, All-

Section, and All-State runner. TJ has put in a lot time over the summer with his running to prepare for the season. TJ has set big goals this year. e girls are led by Katharine Lewer. Katharine was an all-conference runner in a very tough conference last year. We hope she can repeat. Melissa Malakowsky is a gied runner and she ran very consistently for us. She should be our second runner.” — Mike Weber
