The Sports Boosters would like to recognize Faye Young Miller, who most recently was the coach for the Modified Girls Basketball team.
Basketball was an important part of her life. She had played for North Carolina State, then went on to play professionally. She also coached at the collegiate level and became a certified, high-level referee.
Her warmth and compassion were perfectly balanced with her strength, toughness, and fierce competitive nature. Her bright smile and contagious laugh will never be forgotten. She was truly a beacon of light who connected thousands of young athletes with her love of basketball.
Remembering...

The Lil Red Track and Field team had a tremendous season in 2015! The season culminated in sending four girls and three boys to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships! Making States were Quinn Kingsley in the 100-meter hurdles, Ainslie Denman in the 400 hurdles, senior Lauren Trumble in the 1,500
meters and EJ Onah in the long jump. Lauren Trumble broke her own school record and finished 4th in Div 1 in the 1500 meter run. The boys’ team sent senior Luc Sinon in the 110 hurdles, Jake Avery in the 1,600 and senior Cole Clemons in both the shot put and discus.
The team showed its depth by sending 22 entries to compete in the State qualifier meet! Sophomore Jake Avery was seeded third in the 1,600 meters with a best time of 4 minutes, 22.03 seconds. Hunter Hartshorne and senior Niall Hodges were seeded 4th and 5th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hartshorne was fourth at the STAC meet, in 9:58.42. Senior Cole Clemons was among the top seeds in both the shot put (fifth) and discus (third); he finished second in both events at the spring STAC meet.
The girls’ team sent 19 entries to compete at the State Qualifier meet, including senior Lauren Trumble who was seeded second in the 1,500 meters with her school-record time of 4:32.96 (set in a runner-up finish at the STAC championships). Lizzy Rayle was seeded second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase; her best time is a 7:20.58. EJ Onah was seeded eighth the 100 meters and third in the long jump. She had placed second in the long jump at the STAC championship meet with a leap of 16-10. The girls 1,600 relay was seeded first with a top time of 4:04.44; its 3,200-meter relay was seeded second at 9:28.70.

VARSITY LACROSSE: The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team had a challenging schedule, with difficult non-league games and a number of injuries to key players that resulted in a 7-9 record. A tough Corning team had moved up to Section A this year, and was able to beat us for the Section 4 Class A championship. The girls donned special pink Ithaca jerseys in our second game against Horseheads as a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness! Our junior midfielder, Lauren Duthie, was named Academic All American by USA Lacrosse, the first player in over 20 years for IHS Girls Lacrosse! Lauren Duthie, Paige Johnson and Juliette Miettunen were named NYS Section 4 All Stars. The team will miss seniors Hannah Bollinger, Lili Delotsang, Marci Huddle, Paige Johnson, Eva McLafferty, Jane Philipson, and Kayla Young. Paige will be playing in college at the University of Tampa. Many of
our returning players gained valuable experience this year and thanks to an excellent youth program, a large group of talented players will be coming up through the ranks. There’s a bright future for Little Red Girls Lacrosse!
JV LACROSSE: The JV Girls Lacrosse team lost only one game during the entire season, ending the season with a 12-1 record. Losing only to Corning 9-6. They had a great season!
SPRING 2015 GIRLS LACROSSE HIGHLIGHTS
THE ITHACA BOYS VARSITY LACROSSE TEAM fought hard right up to the final moments of the season in the Section IV championship game against Corning. Ithaca showed their skill and heart when they came back from a five goal deficit to storm through the second half before losing by one goal. The team ended the season with an overall 7-9 record and went 6-4 in their league.
Section IV recognized seven Ithaca players as all-stars, including Jalil Clark, Sam Caward, Thomas Johnson and Zach Johnson on first team and Nick Miller, Thomas Moesch, and Cameron Hartman on second team. The lacrosse team wishes good luck to graduating seniors Johl Benedict, Sam Caward, Ruben Gustafson, Thomas Johnson, Zach Johnson, Evan Jordan, Trey Kreydt, and Thomas Moesch.
JV BOYS LACROSSE finished the season with a 5-8 record. The team began the season young and inexperienced, but developed into a confident, hard working group. The coaches, Aaron Shore and Collin Shore, saw improvement from every single player. Last season’s captains were Nick Pagliaro, Steven D’Alterio, and Julian Iacovelli .

VARSITY: The varsity baseball team finished a turnaround season with a 6-10 record and qualified for the Section IV Class AA tournament for the first time under Coach Ian Valentine. Six Little Red players were named to the STAC West All-Division team: James Cronin, Turner DePalma, Ryan Hammond, Sammy Meminger, John Peterson, and Brandon (Buzz) Shirley. The team was led throughout the season by its four seniors: Meminger, Peterson, Nick Evanoski, and James Rudan.
SPRING 2015 BOYS BASEBALL HIGHLIGHTS
This spring’s team record was 13-0, extending the team’s winning streak to 57 matches over the past three and a half seasons. Amazingly this season the team won each team match 7-0 and all of our players were undefeated. Highlights of the season were beating a pretty solid Horseheads team 7-0 twice during the regular season, beating Norwich 7-0 in a non-league match as well as in the STAC Championship. The team also won Sectionals by taking first and second place in singles and doubles and earned the maximum team points possible, in addition to six team members making the state tournament (the maximum possible).
Senior captains Kevin Huang and Justin Milner finished first and second in singles at Class A Sectionals and the Section 4 State Qualifier tournament. Junior captain Steven Carman and junior Jonathan Gomes Selman won both the Section 4 Class A and State Qualifier doubles titles and made it to the round of 16 at states before falling to the second seeded state doubles finalists. Junior Aidan Mackenzie and freshman Michael Zhao finished second at Section 4 Class A Sectionals and third at the State Qualifier tournament and made the second round of the consolation tournament at states.
Milner and Huang were named all-conference in singles and Mackenzie and Zhao were named all-STAC division in singles. Carman and Gomes Selman were named all-conference in doubles, as well as senior Harrison Hensley and junior Alexander Glickman. Junior Geoff van Dover and seniors Louis Latham, Andrew Dev and Tigran Mehrabyan were all named all-division in doubles.
Graduating seniors, who will be missed very much, are senior co-captains Justin Milner and Kevin Huang, Harrison Hensley, Louis Latham, Andrew Dev, Tigran Mehrabyan and Josh Torres.

The JV Softball Team’s season was great in terms of skill development for the team. Although the team didn’t win a game, the girls put forth a solid effort. The team’s skills improved overall as the season moved along. The coach strongly encouraged the girls to play ball this summer on the Babe Ruth league, and several signed up for the 17U team, which has many varsity players on it from the area. Watching these girls continue to hone their skills with the great coaching staff, the experienced older players, and the commitment they’re showing to the sport beyond the regular season is very exciting for Ithaca Softball fans! For the parents and players, it always seems like by the time the weather gets nice enough for games and the team really starts coming together that the season is over. Summer ball keeps the girls engaged in this sport that they love and helps them continue to improve beyond the regular season.
Despite some close games and playing hard, the Varsity Softball team failed to clinch a win this spring. However, the girls demonstrated hard work, dedication and had some great plays and team bonding! This year’s seniors will be missed greatly: Emily Powers, Eliza Sherwyn, Laurel Simon, Rebekah Stauffer and Taylor Turcsik. Thank you Coach Begent and Coach Kyle!
SPRING 2015 GIRLS SOFTBALL HIGHLIGHTS
JV: After starting the season with three straight losses, JV Baseball rallied and finished the season 5-9. The team had victories over Maine Endwell, Vestal, two wins over Elmira, and the season-ending win over Union Endicott. The team won two of their last three games. The season included a tough road game loss to Corning on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh and another one run loss at Binghamton. Offensively, the team was led by freshman catcher Sam Barley, centerfielder Dylan Morse, first baseman/pitcher Griffin Varricchio. On the mound the team was led by freshman Connor Thayer who finished the season with a team low ERA and a 2-2 record. Defensively, leaders were Centerfielder Dylan Morse and shortstop Richie Kuhar.

Athletic Caregiver Code of Conduct Caregiver support is a key component of a successful athletic program. Caregivers and guests are encouraged to positively support all teams, coaches and athletes during home and away athletic contests. Further, the highest potential of athletics is achieved when caregivers and guests actively promote the six core principles of competition: sportspersonship, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, and professionalism.
All caregivers who participate in Ithaca Athletic Programs:
Will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all Coaches, Officials, and spectators at every home or away game, practice or sporting event.
Will promote the emotional and physical wellbeing of my child and all student athletes.
Will help teach my child that doing one’s best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his or her performance.
Will remember that student athletes participate to have fun, and that the game is for youth.
Will sit in the designated spectator seating areas.
Will demand that my child treat other players, Coaches, Officials, and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability.
Will respect the Officials and their authority during games and will never question, discuss or confront Coaches at the game field.
Will address any unresolved issues with the Coach or Officer of Athletics at an agreed upon time and place.
Will refrain from coaching my child, or other players during games and practices.
Will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and wellbeing of my child or any student athlete.
Will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent, such as booing and taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or gestures.
Caregivers or guests in violation of the code of conduct may be dismissed, suspended, or permanently expelled from future athletic contest.
I, _______________________________________________, have read and understand the above code of conduct.
