Veteran’s Day Program Friday, November 10

1:30 pm Parkside Gym

On Friday afternoon, November 10, the Parkside students will present a Veteran’s Day program at 1:30 pm in the gym. Each student received an invitation in their Gold Folder to give to a Veteran if they would like to invite them or someone currently serving in the military to the program. There was also information about sending a picture of a Veteran in uniform to be presented in a power point presentation during the program. Photos of living or deceased Veterans in black/white or color photos can be sent to Mrs. Dell in a digital format [email protected] or brought to school in an envelope with the Veteran’s name, student’s name, and student’s classroom teacher. The photos will be returned in the gold folders after the program.

Online Shopping Program

SchoolStore.com is a website that parents can use when they are doing their online shopping. Parkside receives money from the website when parents use this site. Please take time to open the packet and read the information. Everything can be done online to participate in this program. Go to www.schoolstore.net to complete the sign up process and send email invitations to family and friends. After you sign up and send email invitations, you can enter your Golden Ticket number to find out if you have our school's winning Golden Ticket that is worth $100! Make sure to write down the prize code on your envelope and return it to the office to receive an Emoji ring. Check out information in the packet that was sent home to see all the other prizes your child may be eligible to receive.

Parkside parents, teachers, and students, Explore Exhibit Columbus now thru November 26th! Columbus has 18 new art installations around town. Most of these are temporary, so don't miss out on the fun! Many of these are interactive. Walk through a maze, go inside a teepee, sit in a chair of grass, climb a series of platforms, and much more! Please take a picture of you with the art, and bring it to me for the Exhibit Columbus photo display outside the art room. Pictures may also be emailed to [email protected]. Have fun! - Mrs. Vallette

Third Grade

Miss Bodkins’ Spotlight on Students: Vyom Desai Alejandra Morales Gomez Jiyun Shim

Climb Aboard the Holiday Train Family members are invited for Mrs. Love's class performance of "The Holiday Train" on Tuesday, December 19th at 9:00 in the Forum. Come get in the Holiday spirit with music, fun and refreshments.

Fourth Grade Mrs. Carr wrote and received a $500 grant from The Society of Indiana Pioneers. This money will be used for her class to research famous Hoosiers at the Bartholomew County Public Library third quarter, and the rest will help defray bus expenses for each 4th grade Parkside class to visit Simmons School in May. Thank you Mrs. Carr and congratulations!!

Fifth Grade October 18-20 was the fifth grade trip to Bradford Woods. We were thrilled to have perfect weather for our outdoor adventure! Students were given opportunities to fish, shoot a bow and arrow, throw an atlatl, play games, perform skits, participate in a Native American tribal council, and hike, hike, hike. Our hikes taught us all about native birds in Indiana, native plants in Indiana, animal in-teractions, ecosystems, animal adaptations, and taking care of our environment. We even waded in the creek to find benthic macroinvertebrates. (Ask a fifth grader what a benthic macroinvertebrate is!) We enjoyed family-style meals of spaghetti, fajitas, and pancakes in the mess hall. We also ate hot dogs we cooked ourselves over a fire on the trail during our long hike. The trail-group leaders were hilarious; they taught us songs and performed skits for us. We found that even our teachers have a joke or two to tell during the campfire night. Thank you to all the adult chaperones who joined us for this trip. It was a wonderful three days of learning and fun!

Helping Children Control Their Anger

Children need to know that anger is an acceptable feeling. Too many times they get the mes-

sage that they are not supposed to ever be angry. We teach that feeling mad is okay but acting

mean is not. Parents can help their children to control their anger by helping them to identify

their feelings and the physical reactions that their body is having, and then also helping them

find a way to release the anger. For example: “Wow, I can tell you are getting really frustrated

with your homework. I see that you are clenching your fists and breathing faster. Maybe it

would help you to take a short break and then come back to try again.” By talking to your

child in this way you are naming their feeling (frustration), noticing how they are acting

(breathing fast and clenching fists), and giving them a way to stay in control (take a short break

to relax). There are three important rules to follow in managing your anger:

1. Never hurt yourself. 2. Never hurt others. 3. Never break things.

If children and adults follow these rules, we all feel more in control when angry feelings oc-

cur. Parents need to be a good role model when handling their own anger in order for children

to learn to control their anger instead of letting the anger controlling them.

It's fast and easy to sign up. All you have to do is remember to use your Kroger Plus card when you shop. Kroger will donate to our school quarterly. Look for a reminder on how to sign up coming home soon. Thank you for all your continued support!

Parkside Courtyard Thank you AGAIN to Tasha Tyner and her family for the beautiful fall decorations!! Our resident chipmunk is stuffing his cheeks for winter.
