How to Toast Pumpkin SeedsPrep Time: 10 MinCook Time: 35 Min After you gut your pumpkin for a jack-o-latern, don’t throw the seeds out! Instead, make this simple recipe for Toasted Pumpkin Seeds.

1. Rinse and separate the seeds from everything else. 2. Measure the seeds and put in a medium saucepan. Add 2 cups of water and 1 Tbs of salt in the pan for every ½ cup of seeds. Bring to a boil and let it simmer for 10 min. Remove from heat and drain. 3. Pre-heat the oven to 400°F. Coat the botom of a roasting pan with about a Tbs of olive oil. Spread the seeds in a single layer and bake on the top rack until the seeds begin to brown, about 5-20 minutes depending on seed size. 4. Let the pumpkin seeds cool on a rack all the way before eating.

This team does more than aesthetically beautify men, women and children in Trinity. With a survivor on staff, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is near and dear to their hearts. Moreover, all local organizations are important to the Cabelo family, and they actively support them and area schools whenever possible to make a positive impact in strengthening the community.

Although they regularly receive compliments from their guests for their coffee and wine offerings, Nicole recalls two of the most memorable comments which included “This is the best I’ve ever felt,” and “I love my color and cut!”

A resident of Trinity for 14 years, Nicole is a passionate, hard-working mother, aside from managing Cabelo Salon. She finds it incredibly rewarding and she is grateful to serve her family, her friends, her neighbors and her community!

Why We Wear Pink

...And Why You Should TooAccording the the American Cancer Society, there will be 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer, 64,640 new cases of carcinoma in situ, and 39,620 deaths from breast cancer this year. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. With daunting odds like these, it is now more important than ever for women to educate themselves on how to prevent, detect, and fight this disease. We wear pink to remember. We wear pink to bring awareness. And we wear pink to fight breast cancer. Paula O’Neil has to wear pink to fight like a girl.

A year ago, O’Neil had found a lump in her breast. It did not seem to be a big concern, possibly just fibrocystic, but the gynecologist wanted to have it checked again. “Early detection is very important. My cancer was diagnosed at State 2 and I am fortunate that I will be able to celebrate many more birthdays,” O’Neil says.

Since that diagnosis, O’Neil has had two surgeries; a mastectomy and the start of reconstruction. She started chemotherapy in August and this fourth treatment – scheduled October 15th – is set to be her last. Starting chemotherapy had been a low point during her battle, but she realized that, “if it was important to [her] medical team for that ‘insurance’ against any random cancer cells hanging out in my body, it was important to me.”

That strong, positive outlook on life came from her mother, who had also been diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away in 1989 from other medical complications. O’Neil’s inner strength comes from her faith. “I know He is in control and God has a plan,” O’Neil says. “Every person’s battle is individual...There are many survivors and fighters who have

Why We Wear Pink

...And Why You Should Too1. Limit alcohol. The more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of developing breast cancer. If you choose to drink alcohol — including beer, wine or liquor — limit yourself to no more than one drink a day.

2. Don’t smoke. Accumulating evidence suggests a link between smoking and breast cancer risk, particularly in premenopausal women. In addition, not smoking is one of the best things you can do for your overall health.

3. Control your weight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. This is especially true if obesity occurs later in life, particularly after menopause.

4. Be physically active. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which, in turn, helps prevent breast cancer. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity weekly, plus strength training at least twice a week.

5. Breast-feed. Breast-feeding may play a role in breast cancer prevention. The longer you breast-feed, the greater the protective effect.

6. Limit dose and duration of hormone therapy. Combination hormone therapy for more than three to five years increases the risk of breast cancer. If you’re taking hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms, ask your doctor about other options. You may be able to manage your symptoms with nonhormonal therapies, such as physical activity. If you decide that the benefits of short-term hormone therapy outweigh the risks, use the lowest dose that works for you.

7. Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution. Medical-imaging methods, such as computerized tomography, use high doses of radiation, which have been linked with breast cancer risk. Reduce your exposure by having such tests only when absolutely necessary. While more studies are needed, some research suggests a link between breast cancer and exposure to the chemicals found in some workplaces, gasoline fumes and vehicle exhaust.

While I cannot always choose my circumstances, I can always choose happiness.” Not only does O’Neil choose to be happy, she chooses to fight. “Our Clerks for a Cure Team raises money all year in support of the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay for Life,” States O’Neil. She goes on to list all of the events her team has hosted so far this year: Bingo, Bowling, a Shopping Extravaganza, and the Golf Scramble. They will be at Making Stride Against Breast Cancer on October 19th at The Shops at Wiregrass.

O’Neil had been active with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for many years prior to her diagnosis. “I am impressed with the amount of fundraising that stays in the local area for help with our friends and neighbors.” She is also a member of the Pink Army. The Pink Army’s website states they are, “enlisting an army of individuals to help us create greater awareness about the life-saving benefits of annual mammograms and early detection, all while having a great

time with people we love.”

Love and support is the greatest gift you can give someone battling breast cancer. “The outpouring of support for me has been amazing and I could never begin to describe how meaningful each car and email has been to me,” says O’Neil. “It has been great to hear from women who want to know how the cancer was discovered and to know that they decided to get mammograms on areas that had been suspicious.” The American Cancer Society recommends women ages 40 and above to have an annual mammogram. If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, yearly testing should begin at age 35. You can schedule your mammogram online at jointhepinkarmy.com. Your house gives a lot — shelter, warmth, security. How do you say thanks? Here are heartfelt ways to show your appreciation.

1. Give your house some time off (make systems work less). Your house works hard to keep you cool in the summer and warm in winter. Repay the favor by saving energy — your house will be grateful for a lessened workload, and you’ll save money. Tune up HVAC. Keeping your heating and cooling system running efficiently reduces the stress on mechanical parts and helps your HVAC last longer. You can inspect the HVAC yourself or have a pro do it for $50 to $100. Also change filters.

Upgrade attic insulation. Boosting attic insulation from R-11 to R-49 trims about $600 from your energy bill. An insulation contractor will charge about $1,500 to add insulation to an 800-sq.-ft. attic, so you’ll recoup your investment in three years. Plus, with your home nice and toasty, your HVAC doesn’t have to work as hard trying to warm up your rooms.

2. Keep your house high and dry (stop moisture). Your home’s No. 1 enemy? Moisture — rain, plumbing leaks, and dampness all spell trouble for your house. Beat back moisture baddies with smart preventative maintenance that heads off costly repairs. Re-grade foundation soils. So essential! The dirt next to your foundation walls should slope away from your house about 6 inches in 10 feet. That ensures rain doesn’t accumulate in the soils around your foundation, where hydrostatic pressure can cause (very expensive) cracks in foundation walls. Seal bathroom caulk. If the caulk around your tub and shower is looking dingy, or if you can see gaps, it’s time for a quick repair. Remove the old caulk (use a caulk removing tool, $5) and reseal seams with mold-resistant bathroom caulk. That’ll prevent moisture from getting inside walls, where it can cause mold, mildew, and rot. Clean out rain gutters. Do you really have to be reminded of this every spring and fall? For shame! Pull out a ladder, crank some tunes through the earbuds, and get the gunk out of your rain gutters.

3. Give your house a facial (clean & paint). Let’s face it — everybody just feels better when the house gets a little cosmetic pampering. Not only that, a clean house means you’ll save money on repairs — a dirty house contributes to floor scratches, clogged vents, and reduces the lifespan of carpets and rugs. And did you know that getting rid of clutter helps fight depression? Spruce up floors. A few quick, inexpensive fixes for floors will put a smile on your house.

• Stick down the curled-up edges of vinyl flooring by covering the spot with aluminum foil and pressing with a medium-hot iron. That’ll melt the glue under the vinyl and reattach the flooring to the subfloor.

• Repair scratched wood floors by rubbing scratches with a color-matched crayon.

Paint trim. Over time, the trim moldings around your house — baseboards, door casings, chair rails — take a heap of abuse from everyday bumps and bangs. Repair trim by cleaning it with a microfiber cloth, filling nicks, and painting it. Green clean your kitchen and bath. Yup, time to take a deep breath and do some cleaning. But your house will breathe easier if you green clean and avoid harsh chemicals and VOCs that can cause respiratory problems.

• Make a homemade cleaning paste from baking soda and liquid castile soap that erases bathtub rings (add a couple of drops of essential oils for a soft fragrance).

• To remove soap scum from shower walls, combine equal parts water and vinegar. A bit of disinfecting essential oil — lemon or orange work fine — adds germ-fighting power and a clean scent.

Autumn has always been my favorite season. Coming from northern Michigan, I have always had the pleasure of watching the oaks and maples turn forests into vibrant,

golden hues. The beauty of gold has often been found on canvas throughout the ages.

One artist in particular comes to mind though. Gustav Klimt, born in Austria-Hungary in 1862, had his “Golden phase” from about 1899-1910. Marked by the strong use of gold leaf, many of his most well-known works came from that phase. Works such as The Kiss or Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The bursts of reflective light that resonate from those images can be brought into your own home, for much less.

Adding golden accents into your home is a great way to give your rooms a vintage and romantic feel. Small details such as golden candle holders, frames, or wall art can help

wave in this fall season. There are plenty of gourgeous golden accents in the stores right now. You could also go the DIY route with some gold spray paint and a vase. If you do, I recomend first applying some patterns with elmers glue, letting it dry, and then applying an even layer of spray paint. It adds a fun, personalized texture that you can take some personal pride in.

1. Treating employees improperly as independent contractors. This has always been a hot issue with IRS and with the additional questions on tax returns concerning filing of Form 1099s, IRS is continuing to search for these businesses. 2. Failing to maintain or properly report automobile usage. Vehicles owned by a partnership or corporation should deduct all related actual expenses and report the personal use of company vehicles as a taxable fringe benefit using one of three valuation methods. Business use of a personal vehicle may be reimbursed by the business or deducted as an employee business expense by the employee on form 2106 using one of several valuation methods.

3. Erroneously classifying a hobby as a business. Unless the activity is expected to produce profits on a regular basis, consult with your tax preparer BEFORE engaging in the activity.

4. Including purchase of fixed assets as supplies. Although Sec. 179 expense election is available for most purchase of fixed assets,

that deduction is not allowable unless properly reported on the tax return. For tax years after 2013, the amendment of a Sec. 179 election will no longer be allowable after a return is filed.

5. Failing to respond to EVERY IRS notice. The worst thing one can do is to allow the IRS to escalate their efforts when you fail to respond.

6. Failure to file tax reports if you cannot pay. Failure to file penalties are ten times higher that failure to pay penalties. Do not incur this extra expense when you are already unable to pay taxes when due.

7. Using tax trusts funds (sales tax collected and payroll taxes withheld) for

other business purposes. When cash is tight, ALWAYS include these tax payments at the top of your list.

8. Overpaying taxes (through withholding or estimated tax payments) during the year, creating an interest-free loan to the government. Reduce your withholdings or estimated tax payments, but put the savings in your savings account.

Falling in love is one of life’s most exciting seasons!

I recently married a wonderful man, Mike Tee, and we are embarking on our life together with great enthusiasm! Thus, the change to the name of my column!

FIRST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY TO HOLD FIRST ANNUAL THANKSGIVING RACE

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – First Christian Academy in New Port Richey, Fla., is hosting the Gobbler 5k Family Fun Run, its first Thanksgiving race. The race will take place at Jay B. Starkey Park at 8:00 a.m. on the morning of November 28, 2013.

The 5k race is chip-timed, and each participant will receive a dri-fit t-shirt, a finisher’s medal and refreshments. First, second and third place medals will also be awarded to the runners who place in their respective age groups (male and female). The 1-mile Kids’ Fun Run will take place immediately after the 5k, and all children participating in the 1-mile run will receive a medal.

Cost for registration in the 5k run is $25, and registration in the 1-mile Kids’ Fun Run is $10. Participants can register online at www.gobbler5k.com or register the morning of the event.

NEW PORT RICHEY WINS TOP PRIZE AT SPELLING BEE

New Port Richey, FL (Oct. 3, 2013) - The Rotary Club of New Port Richey is once again the big winner of the annual Chamber Spelling Bee that recently took place at the Spartan Manor this past September.

Team members Cami Austin, Carlos Zubillaga, Lawrence Hochman, and Ken Misemer have earned the club this distinguished honor for the fourth time by spelling the word “schadenfreude” correctly.

“Catch the Buzz,” the 11th annual Spelling Bee hosted by the W. Pasco Chamber of Commerce’s Ambassadors is chaired by New Port Richey Rotarian, Bonnie Howard. Proceeds from this event benefits the Chamber’s local scholarships program.

The New Port Richey Rotary Club was established in 1959 and meets every Wednesday for lunch at noon at the Spartan Manor in New Port Richey. Rotary International is an organization of business and professional persons united world-wide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Wildlife Survival Sanctuary - a non-profit 501c3 wildlife and exotic animal rescue facility located in springhill florida dedicated to the rescue of unwanted or abused animals.

Founded in May of 2000 and is located on ten acres just north of Tampa in Spring Hill, Florida. The founders realized that the problems facing wildlife in captivity were significant. Often, exotic animals found in captivity, are purchased by individuals who want to own them to enhance their personal status or for financial gain by breeding them for profit. Unfortunately, most people don’t know that exotic animals in captivity have

complex nutritional, dietary and medical needs that are extremely costly when you own one of these animals.

Wildlife Survival Sanctuary is operated by an all non-paid volunteer staff, therefore we have no administrative cost, which ensures that all donations go directly towards the cost of care for our animals. All donations are tax-deductible. We depend on the public for support, and yes, we need your help!

Tours are available by appointment.Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated!!!!

We are a 501c3 charity and rely completely on public support. 100 % of your donation goes directly to the feeding and care ofall the animals here at Wildlife Survival Sanctuary. All visitors will be given a guided tour by one of our sanctuary volunteers.

With almost 2,700 Facebook “likes” we determined that an establishment with so many likes would be the perfect spot to enjoy some lunch. After all, with that many thumbs up, it MUST be good, right?

We were greeted immediately by the friendly staff and were seated quickly. Although the atmosphere was rather subdued at first, that quickly changed as a steady stream of patrons started to arrive.

Shortly after we were seated, the tasty chips and garlic tomato Salsa arrived, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Our server stopped by our table within the first 5 minutes of our arrival, introduced herself to us and welcomed us to the restaurant. Since we weren’t quite ready to place our order, she left to give us time to think things over. It took a few minutes for her to return to our table, as the staff was socializing at the bar area.

Our lunch order was placed at 11:45am and within 10 minutes, our meals arrived piping hot and smelling delicious. We didn’t waste any time and dove right in.

One entrée was the Jerk Chicken Tacos, which consisted of grilled marinated jerk chicken, served in flour tortillas, cheese, fried sweet plantains, avocados, and cilantro cream. We added an extra taco to the 2-taco serving, but ended up snagging a “to-go” cardboard box for the 3rd taco. The sweet cilantro cream was a wonderful blend with the spicy chicken, with just the right amount of avocado and sweet plantains to make this a dish we would order again.

The Volcano Shrimp Taco’s, had a sauce to die for. Filled with crisp lettuce, diced tomatoes and sliced avocado and drizzled with a Chipotle mayo, this made these tacos very flavorful and needed to be devoured immediately.

We also enjoyed the Shrimp Diablo Bowl, which consisted of gulf shrimp, spicy tomato sauce, sun dried tomatoes, and Asian whole grain noodles. Your first impression will lead you to think that this dish is small, but it turned out to be quite filling. Our server warned us that this dish had a bit of a bite to it, and if we liked spicy entrees, then this would be the one for us. As we started to enjoy the meal, we noticed she was right, but the bite was a bit delayed, as that was the only flavorful part of this dish. Overall perception was that this was not as flavorful of a dish as first hoped, and the Asian noodles were mushy in texture. Probably wouldn’t order it again.

Rounding out the entrées was the Grilled Vegetable and Bean Burrito, which included grilled zucchini, yellow squash, red peppers, jack cheese, ginger lime rice, pinto beans, oven roasted garlic tomato salsa in a flame grilled flour tortilla. This dish was overflowing with a good mix of vegetables, and was very plentiful. This diner would probably not order the side of vegetable slaw with the meal, or any other meal for that matter, as the slaw was over-the-top salty, and was dripping in an Italian dressing that did little to compliment the veggies.

However, if you were looking to kick up the spice factor with your meal, there are 3 different Hot Sauces offered at your table, so you can flavor to taste and feel the burn!

Our drink’s consisted of Coke’s and Unsweet Tea with lemon, all of which were kept full. No dessert was needed either, as our entrées were very filling!

If you are the type of savvy diner that enjoys being left alone during your meal with minimal interruptions from your server, then this is the place for you.

The atmosphere at Zim Zari’s is one of casual comfort. This California coastal grill is well lit, has a friendly staff but the dirty and stained seat backs were a definite turn off.

On the plus side, Zim’s does offer daily specials that are easy on the pocketbook. Monday’s consist of $3 Margarita’s, and folks in the medical field get 15% off everything. Tuesday offers $2 tacos all day. Wine Down Wednesday offers you the option of wine or Sangria for $3. On Thursday, you can eat your fill with their $5.95 Burrito’s. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday’s, you get the good fortune of enjoying drink specials and ½ price appetizers from 9am-close. PLUS on Sunday, kids 12 & under eat free.

Overall, our experience was a pleasant one, and we got a kick out of Zim Zari’s perspective that they welcome families, couples, and anyone who likes to remember the special things about living life and achieving your dreams.

Let’s hope that part of making this a place to remember will be for the flavorful meals and not the dirty booth seats that reflect the patrons who’ve dined before us.

Overall rating: 1 being the worst – 5 being the best, I’d give this restaurant 3 houses out of 5.

Healthy Eating During the HolidaysIt’s that time of the year again. The one where Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas (all those parties!), and New Years all seem to come at once. It also happens to be the time of year where my pants do not seem to fit as well as they did in the summer. Here are a few ways I have learned to enjoy the holidays while fitting into my Christmas dress: 1. Bring something healthy to the table! Chances are, you will be contributing to the meal. Look up delicious healthy meals that will keep you guests happy on the inside and outside.

2. Drink water! A glass of water before your meal can make you feel fuller, faster. You can also think of it this way: 140 calories in a can of Coke, 125 calories in two glasses of red wine, 0 calories in water.

3. Wait a bit before going for seconds. It can take a few minutes for your brain to realize that your stomach is full. Sip a little water, enjoy your company, and then assess if you really want

another scoop of stuffing.

4. Just because you can put extra (butter, gravy, ranch, or cheese) on it doesn’t mean you should. It adds up.

5. Don’t hold out on yourself! Satisfy your sweet tooth a little at a time throughout the holidays to prevent a regretable binge session.
