A Message from the Principal

4

Dear Students, Faculty and Friends of Bishop Machebeuf High School,

I hope that this letter finds you each enjoying the splen-dor of God’s creation during this beautiful Fall weather as we witness the changing colors of the leaves and the beautiful clear night skies. This Fall Beacon follows a very exciting month of activity in the Church and here at Bishop Machebeuf High School. We have been celebrat-ing the month of October as Respect Life Month and as a month devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the celebra-tion of Blessed John Paul II’s feast day on October 22nd,

and on October 11th, we joined the Catholic Church throughout the world in celebrating the Year of Faith as proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI.

This year, Bishop Machebeuf High School has again been recognized as one of the Top 50 Catholic High Schools in the United States of America by the Cardinal Newman Society for its outstanding success in the areas of Catholic Identity, Academic Excellence and Civic Education. The Year of Faith calls our academic community of faith to yet another year filled with activities that continue to support our success in these areas and well beyond! We are called as Catholics to renew our commitment to our faith on the anniversaries of both the opening of the Second Vatican Council 50 years ago and the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church 20 years ago.

As we continue to pursue the 2,000 plus years of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, our faculty will be bringing purposeful efforts to the classroom to discuss the gift of faith while reading and praying with Scriptures. They will continue their purposeful efforts to bring our students to know Christ, the person, in a meaningful way that nourishes and builds their faith through the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Finally, we will continuously revisit the wealth of insight found in reading Pope Benedict’s Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei, welcoming us to open the door of faith again to ourselves and others.

Bishop Machebeuf High School continues to thrive as a school community that recognizes that it exists as an ecclesial ministry that is inspired by a supernatural vision to lead souls who are made in the image and likeness of God, back to Him who brought ALL things into being. It is through this Catholic worldview that our amaz-ing faculty work to inspire wonder and curiosity in the minds of our students by serving as a living witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This Fall is a very exciting time for our school family as each member is provided with the chance to share the fruits of being a part of the Machebeuf tradition. The ‘Door of Faith’ is truly open to all who enter, and each Fall we reach out to many new families and students with an invitation to give more fully of ourselves to God by professing our faith in Jesus Christ.

Thank you to all of our past, current and future parents for availing to us as Catholic educators the opportunity to join with you as partners in the education and formation of your children. It is an absolute gift, honor and responsibility that we accept with great fervor, and this Year of Faith promises to make our work that much more exciting!

Prayers in Christ, Jessie Skipwith Principal

Enshrined in our first amend-ment to the U.S. Constitution is a vital respect for the sacred in society, “Congress shall make no law respect-ing an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ” (U.S. Const., am. 1). No govern-ment can play the role of God: this amendment amounts to a promise that Congress will respect this limit. This is why, whenever the promise of religious freedom was violated by an unjust exercise of governmental pow-ers, such abuse was not long tolerated by our nation’s forefathers. Unfortu-nately, today, the Catholic Bishops of the United States have reported that the promise of religious liberty is being grossly violated by series of unjust laws. As has been the case throughout our history, U.S. Catholic Bishops are asking us not to tolerate this breach in the American promise and to oppose as unjust any law which attempts to limit our freedom to be faithful to God. As an American I am called to serve my country; as a Catho-lic I am called to live my faith. The Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty of the United States Confer-ence of Catholic Bishops drafted a document entitled Our First, Most Cherished Liberty: A Statement on Religious Freedom. This document explains how these callings “need not be contradictory, and should instead be complementary” (“Our First”) for

both of them call us to contribute to the common good. Recent legislation and judicial rulings have imposed a threat on our religious freedom by restricting our ability to contribute to the common good. Certain states have forced Catholic foster care and adoption agencies to give up their license because our charities “refused to place children with same-sex couples or unmarried opposite-sex couples who cohabit” (“Our First”). The government believes that the Church was not being fair, that the Church was unjustly impos-ing its values in society. Yet we must question this assertion. The Church operates as an institution in which members have freely chosen to bind themselves together to a way of life which includes service to moral val-ues they find rational and good. If this is something that rational people have freely chosen to do, is the Church or is it government that is acting intoler-ant of traditional marriage and the right that children have to both a mother and father? If people of faith are not allowed to promote traditional marriage and the rights of children, how can the Church possibly contrib-ute to building up American society? “Religious liberty…is about whether we can make our contribution to the common good of all Americans…without having to compromise…[our] faith” (“Our First”). Freedom of religion allows me to live out my faith, and therefore live out who I truly am as a human person. Without it, I would be unable to live out fully who God created me

to be. My faith is one of the most fundamental aspects of my life. Liv-ing out my faith and nourishing it by attending Mass, constantly seeking forgiveness through the sacrament of Reconciliation, and learning more deeply about it at Bishop Machebeuf High School, is important to me because through Christ I can come to understand my vocation in life and who I am as a human person. With-out religious freedom, I would not be able to exercise any of these essential aspects of my life. What the Bishops are ask-ing us to oppose publically is not unlike that which inspired the first pilgrims to come to America. These humble men and women crossed into the American wilderness to escape political powers which rejected their witness in the marketplace and tried to silence their voices in the public square. They hungered for the free-dom to live out their faith and to propose this way of life in society through a fair exchange of ideas with fellow citizens. Sparked by these dreams and liberated from the unjust incursion governmental control, our early settlements knew not only mate-rial prosperity but above all spiritual blessing. Ever generation should know this blessing. As was the case then, so too now: we must not com-ply with unjust laws. Against those cultural forces which would shame us into silence, we must be proud to wit-ness to our faith in the public square.

Freedom of Religionby Sabeth Lilles

This summer, in response to the U.S. Bishops call for prayer, education and public action for religious freedom, Bishop Conley invited students from the Archdiocese to participate in an essay

contest on the free exercise of religion. Below is the winning essay from one our Machebeuf Buffaloes.

The 3rd annual Machebeuf 5K, held on September 23rd was a tremendous success. The 3.1 mile run/walk through the streets of Lowry drew a record 351 registered participants and exceeded our fundraising goal, collectively raising over $21,000 in funds to benefit the Bishop Machebeuf High School Community.

A big thank you goes out to our entire com-munity for supporting the Machebeuf 5K. This event would not happen without the gen-erosity of our volunteers and the giving spirit of our sponsors, donors and participants. On event day, we were blessed with beautiful weather and a barbeque lunch provided by the Knights of Columbus Council #4647.

Sophomore cross country standout, Ben Espinola won the Men’s division race with a time of 16:59. Ben has been a stand-out in cross country

this year and has even set a course record in a 3A Cross Country meet. Finishing in 2nd place was the Ma-chebeuf Cross Country coach, Mat-thew Provencio with a time of 17:41 and ending in 3rd place with a time of 17:52 was Dylan Tooley.

Farewell to Bishop ConleyMr. Eduard Lugo

As we welcome our new Archbishop to the city of Denver, Bishop Machebeuf High School would also like to say farewell to a good friend to our school, Bishop James Conley. Bishop Conley has been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to lead the Dio-

cese of Lincoln, Nebraska. He has been a tremendous friend to our school going out of his way to join us for Baccalaureate Masses, Penance Services and sitting on our Board

of Trustees. When the Lord calls, a bishop must

answer, but neverthe-less we will miss a good

friend to Bishop Ma-chebeuf High School. Thank you for your

years of service to our diocese and generous service to our school.

Coaching SpotlightMr. Matt Santangelo

Brian Sheehan has been coaching Boys Soccer for Bishop Machebeuf since 2008 and every year we realize how lucky we are to have such an amazing coach to lead our boys’ team. Brian is a 2004 Graduate of J.K. Mullen High School in Denver where he was not only a member of the Boys Soccer State Finalist team but was also voted as the Player of the Year. After graduat-ing from Mullen, Brian went on to play soccer for Notre Dame. Currently, Brian is a teacher at Annunciation Grade School.

When asked about why Brian chose to coach soccer at Bishop Machebeuf he answered, “through coaching, there is a deep alignment between my vocational aptitudes and my firm belief that in giv-ing we receive. It brings me a lot of joy to see a young person flourish both on the soccer field and off, and if I am able to play a role in that – however big or small- it is an honor and a blessing.”

Brian is a true professional. He is a dynamic coach with incredible passion for the game. The members of the Boys Soccer team respond to his direction with respect and attention. Brian has compiled his coaching staff with like-minded individuals who share his passion for the sport. Under Brian’s leadership we have become one of the most respected Boys Soccer programs in 3A.

From an Athletic Director’s point of view, Brian is the perfect coach. Brian’s ability to balance the behind the scenes administrative duties simultaneously with the day-to-day operations of coaching is impressive. More impor-tantly however, is Brian’s ability to assist in the faith formation of our young student-athletes.
