Winter 2012-13
Dear Cobba-Families,
It’s hard to believe that Summer 2012 is behind us and we are already gearing up for Summer 2013. While we have been busy speaking to new and returning families, our thoughts and prayers have been with those that were directly affected by Hurricane Sandy. We have donated a large supply of extra camp shirts that we had at Cobbossee. Helping those in need is something that we engrain in our campers and this year, we will be emphasizing more with our Cobbossee Community Award(see article below).
On a personal note, we are preparing for our newest addition to Camp Cobbossee, Baby Cohen! We have decided not to find out the gender of the baby, but thought it would be fun for our camp community to take a guess. If you haven’t already done so, go to our website or to Facebook and take the Camp Cobbossee Baby Cohen Poll! Your guess is as good as ours. We’ll keep everybody updated on both camp and our family. Welcome michael healdWe are excited to welcome Michael Heald to our full-time staff. This past summer was Michael’s third summer at Cobbossee, taking on an increased role as Council Group Leader. Prior to coming to work for us, he graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Elementary Education. Michael was made for Camp Cobbossee. His love of baseball was what brought him to camp to begin with and he quickly caught the Cobbossee bug.
Fun Facts about Michael:• This past year, Michael completed his student teaching assignment in Heidelberg, Germany on an American Army Base
• Michael played two years of college baseball before settling in at Pac-12 powerhouse Washington State University (WSU) as a full time student
• In 2001, Michael played in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA as a member of the team representing the Northwest. The team finished 5th out of the 16 U.S. teams.

This year, we have transitioned to a new database system that will allow our camp community to access more information online. We feel this will benefit our families as you will be able to enroll your son online as well as fill out many of the necessary forms. “myCobbossee”, which is powered by CampMinder, will be the portal for our families to access this important information. If you need assistance, just let us know and we will be happy to help.

Survey SaySThe results are in from our 2012 Camper and Parent Surveys. An overwhelming number of our campers gave thumbs up to our Special Events(Tribal Games/Color War) and Evening Activities. Both areas received high rat-ings and some great feedback.
Based on some of the comments, we’ll be expanding some of the evening activities and of course, we’ll be continuing to play Human Stratego! To no surprise, when campers were asked to rate our food, they gave it an average rating of 4.9 out of 5! As we say at Cobbossee our food isn’t good, it’s GREAT! Louis is hard at work on some new dishes and he’s very excited as we have expanded his kitchen so he can do even more with his staff!
Our parent surveys gave us some great feedback as well. Overall, parents indicated that they were very pleased with the experience that their sons had at camp. Some of the highlights of the summer for parents were the sense of accomplishment that their son’s felt upon returning home, the ability for their son to try new things, and the friends that their sons made. Again, to no one’s surprise, parents reported that they heard the food was AWESOME and were happy to taste it for themselves!
While we are still in the midst of planning for Summer 2013, we are excited to announce some new additions and updates to camp and our program!
Waterfront – Summer 2012 proved to be very popular down at the waterfront. Next summer will be even more fun as we increase some of our waterfront options. In addition to our 3 ski boats, we will be adding more paddleboards as well as upgrading our sailboats!
Ropes Addition – The wall is fun, the zipline is awesome, so how about 3 crazy bridges off the top of the wall that interconnect and lead to a cargo net tube that you climb down to get to the ground. We are currently working with our ropes course designer and adding these elements for this summer. We are finalizing some more additions which we will update in the coming months.

New and improved programs were some of the many highlights at Camp Kippewa for Girls during Summer 2012. The ever popular Adventure Program had well received updates with 2 new additions to the Kippewa Climbing Wall. Campers were able to continue to develop their climbing skills with the new levels and for those that were interested, take part in the trip to Acadia Climbing School.
The sound of music could be heard echoing across Lake Cobbosseecontee and we mean that literally! Kippewa’s new Music program brought together a group of talented counselors to teach campers guitar, drums and vocals. The program was very popular and they are looking forward to making it even better for 2013.
New for 2013…Camp Kippewa is excited to announce that they have broken ground on a new pavilion. Kippy girls will be able to utilize the gorgeous new buildings for everything from indoor games to theatre productions, evening activities, rainy days and more! This will be a great addition to Camp Kippewa!

Increase In summer readIng!
It was a pleasant surprise to see a major rise in summer reading amongst our campers. While some of this is based on summer reading assignments for school, we found that overall it was a result of our No Electronics Policy and campers just liking to read! With no televi-sion to watch or computers to play, the boys settled into their cabins to enjoy board games, card games and a good book. We found ourselves running to the bookstore on almost a daily basis to get more books so this summer we are going to get a step ahead! We are in the process of buying a variety of popular books to add to our new Cobbossee Library. The books will be available for boys to “check-out” and read. We need your help! Please let us know what books you would like us to get. Are there good series that you enjoy? Authors? If you are interested in donating any books, let us know and we will send you a prepaid label to ship them to camp.
ScoPe SouTheaST
uPdaTeAs many of you know, last year Cobbossee directors Josh and Jill Cohen founded SCOPE Southeast. SCOPE(Summer Camp Opportunities Provide Education) has chapters in the NY/NJ area as well as the Midwest(Chicago). SCOPE was founded to help raise money in an effort to send children to camp that might not normally have the opportunity. SCOPE SE raises money to send underserved children from South Florida to residential summer camps located throughout Florida. Through events last year, SCOPE SE was able to send more than 50 children to camp! We are excited that we will be continuing to host more events through the year.
UPCOMING SCOPE EVENTSCOPE will be hosting a FREE Tailgate Party at the December 2nd Miami Dolphins vs New England Patriots game at Sun Life Stadium. NeW iNTercamP formaTS
We know our campers love to compete and we are excited to announce that we will be offering more opportunities this summer. We received a tremendous amount of feedback from both our campers and staff in regards to the amount of time they spent at other camps during tournaments.
In response, we will be adjusting how we compete. Campers will now be able to play
multiple sports within the same day against other camps and no longer
have to sit around at a camp all day waiting for their turn. The games will take place so that campers
will still have the opportunity to enjoy one of their morning and afternoon activity
periods. As always, these competition days will be optional for all campers.
NuNWay valueSCamp Cobbossee is full of many traditions that guide our campers and staff. At the forefront is what we call the “Nunway Values”. Nunway stems from the phrase “Ion Keeway Nunway” which means “Friendships for a Lifetime”. While the actual phrase was brought to Cobbossee in the mid 80’s, the values can be traced back to the first days of Cobbossee.
Everything we do at Camp Cobbossee incorporates the Nunway Values – Friendship, Sportsmanship, and Community. We expect everybody in our camp community to strive to honor this code in whatever they are doing. It is very intentional that the only awards we give at Cobbossee are based on these values and not for the “best”.
Summer 2013 will bring a new tradition to Camp Cobbossee. While we currently honor a camper each session with awards for both Sportsmanship(Michael Griffin & Lloyd Johnson Awards) and Friendship(Nunway Stones), we have decided to honor a current or former camper or staff with the Cobbossee Community Award. This award will be given to a camper that has brought the Nunway Values beyond camp and into their community. We are excited to announce that the first camper to receive this award is former Cobbossee camper, Ben Soloway. You can learn more about what Ben is doing to help those in need in our Alumni Spotlight in this newsletter.

Camp Cobbossee: How did you end up at Camp Cobbossee and why do you keep coming back?
Tom Donahue: Well, like I tell everyone, I’m the most unlikely person to end up working at a camp in Maine. I’m definitely a city guy and I never had any experience in camp or living in the woods. I’ve been involved in baseball as a player and a coach my whole life. I got my first job in professional baseball at the age of 25 and after 12 seasons of riding the busses in the minor leagues, I needed a change. I was looking for something that would keep me local in the Northeast and where I could spend more time with my wife, Donna. I came upon the job post for Cobbossee head of baseball by accident, inquired about it and Josh and Jill sold me with their enthusiasm and vision of what Cobbossee was and could be. I say it all the time, I wish I found Cobbossee when I was 25. It would have saved me a lot of sleepless nights on the bus heading to the next Podunk town on the schedule. The People are what keeps bringing me back. I have met such great friends at Cobbossee.
CC: We all know who Coach Tom is at camp but what are we missing during the other 10 months of the year?
TD: To say the least, I stay busy. For years, I taught at a high school for at risk youth in my hometown of Lynn, Massachusetts. Last year I took a job at one of the bigger high schools in Lynn. I’m in charge of the discipline and safety for a student body of about 1600. I also coach Football, Winter Track, and Baseball at my Alma Mater, St. Mary’s of Lynn.
CC: What comes to mind when you hear “Ion Keeway Nunway?”
TD: I think of the relationships I’ve developed over the years with the great people at Cobbosse, past and present. People like Josh, Jill, Grifff-fffff, Lloyd, Emilie, Louis and all the people I eat meals with 3 times a day. I have been lucky to have great staffs, but what I really
love is when one of them calls and need some help with a recommendation for college or a job or just need some advice. I think they all know I will do anything to help them. All these people are my friends, and they will be friends for a lifetime. When the campers are leaving with tears in their eyes because they are going to miss their bunkmates and counselors, while it’s sad, they know it is only temporary. They will be together again next summer and that bond will continue to grow and literally last a lifetime. Ion Keeway Nunway is a very real thing for everybody involved with Cobbossee and it is very powerful.
CC: One of the highlights of the 2012 summer was the addition of Awesomeball to Cobba Choice. For those who don’t know, can you help shed some light on the wonder that is Awesomeball?
TD: It’s a game I developed by melding together a few different games and ratcheting it all up a little. It has a little bit of softball, kickball, soccer and dodge ball in it along with a few things unique only to Awesomeball. I love it because it is fast paced and can be played with a lot of mixed age groups, including the counselors. I didn’t think it would become so popular, but it really took off. It’s a lot of fun!
CC: Tom you are 2 for 2 as a Tribal Games Chief, 1 for 1 as a Color War General...is there something different in the water in Lynn? What’s your secret?
TD: It’s a simple formula. Work hard and surround yourself with GREAT people. I had very little to do with those victories, the people on those teams deserve all the credit.
CC: Will we ever have another opportunity to see Chief/General Donahue again or did 2012 spell the end of an era?
TD: I’m retired….maybe.
CC: Alright Coach, well we know you lead a busy life so we’ll finish up with one last question. Who’s winning the Super Bowl this year?
TD: The New England Patriots, I hope.

NUNWAY! We are excited to announce the recipient of the first Camp Cobbossee Community Award. Alumnus Ben Soloway from Weston, MA is an avid tennis player. While playing daily, he saw a problem piling up right in front of his eyes…used tennis balls. As many great minds do, when they see a problem, they find an answer. Through Ben’s Project Green Ball, he found two! Project Green Ball is a sustainability initiative he founded about six months ago to recycle used tennis balls and to donate surfaces based on the recycled balls to organizations
servicing kids with disabilities or life threatening diseases.
Their most successful project so far is the recycling of dead tennis balls in equestrian turf. The Dana Hall School in Wellesley, MA has purchased a ball-based turf from our turf manufacturing partner in upstate New York. After Project Green Ball collects and delivers 200,000 balls to our turf provider, they will donate an equestrian turf to a therapeutic riding facility for children with disabilities. To date, they have collected over 41,000 balls.
Camp Cobbossee is committed to helping Project Green Ball. We have pledged to send all of our used tennis balls to assist in their efforts. Additionally, we have reached out to many of the other Maine summer camps in an effort to have them help as well.
Through his Project Green Ball initiative, Ben has brought the Nunway Values to his community. He has put both the needs of others and the environment in the public eye. We are honored to say that Ben is a part of the Camp Cobbossee family! ION KEEWAY NUNWAY

Hangin’' witH HealdThanksgiving already? Wow - it feels like yesterday that I was running around camp breathing in the warm summer air. While there are ways to stay busy here in Seattle, namely watching my Washington State Cougars throw away another perfectly good season, I find myself daydreaming of fireworks over the lake and Louis’ famous fried chicken. I will be the first to admit that the change of seasons can be a welcome refreshment and that the holidays mean seeing family, however, more commonly they serve to remind me that I am a boy of Summer and am at home when on the fields of Cobbossee. So for now, I will continue to prepare for Summer the same way I always do - by crossing off the days on my calendar.
