Serving Redwood City’s older adult community for over 38 years!
The official guide to the many programs and services offered at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center
Fall 2021 - Vol. 6 No. 2
A Note from VMSC Community Services Manager, Bruce Utecht
Here we have it! Our first crossbreed of the VMSC Brochure and the Sentinel. We figured that since we are going to resume classes and programs soon (pandemic allowing) we needed to get something into everyone's hands and pass on some information. First and foremost, we are open for lunch Tuesdays – Fridays from 11:00am – 1:00pm. Lunches are being served snack-bar style which means everything is ordered a la carte and cooked by Chef Gavin when you order it. A $10.00 “Blue Plate” will also be served daily. We are slowly but surely opening classes starting in September. As our classes reopen, please use this brochure to find out class details or talk to a staff member. Most of the class times and locations in the main building have stayed the same and the other classes from the Community Wellness Center, (the old building across the street) have been relocated into the main building. Adaptive PE classes are located across the park in the Armory and we are hoping to start Drop-In-Fitness classes at the Red Morton Community Center in October. As you will see, there is construction going on here at the Senior Center. Our parking lots and driveways will be changing soon. Please pay attention to signage and construction workers. The center will remain open during our normal business hours throughout the construction project. If you see fences or barricades around a portion of the building please try another entrance. We will try our best to have appropriate signage for you! Movies. Let’s set a TENTATIVE start date for Friday, September 24. PANDEMIC ALLOWING!!! We will let you know what the movie is on Friday, September 17th and have a schedule through October by then! Our good friend Joel will be back helping out with the movies!!

On the following page you will see a list of people, groups, partners and agencies. Since we were not able to have special events last year, we partnered with a wonderful organization called TRAVONDE. Travonde coordinated eleven community Zoom days for the VMSC giving us the ability to stay connected during the pandemic and as you can see the list is long with a huge variety of classes and programs.
Travonde and the VMSC will continue to host our Community Zoom Days on the third Wednesday for every month so please check TRAVONDE.com for the latest classes.
Thank you to our wonderful instructors and especially to Tina and Veronica from Travonde for their support for our seniors during the past year!

Adaptive Physical Education (APE) offers a fitness program designed for individuals of all abilities, including those with physical or health limitations. The goal of the program is to increase the level of function and wellness for all participants.
This program’s benefits include cardiovascular fitness, strength training, flexibility, balance and coordination with an emphasis on improving mobility, independence and quality of life. Instructors will design and implement individualized exercise programs for all students. Personal fitness goals will be evaluated periodically.
Adaptive Physical Education Class Descriptions:
All exercise classes are structured in a way that offers a personalized exercise program carried out in a group setting. Each individual is encouraged to progress at his or her own pace in a safe and supportive environment where they will not be judged for their own particular level of ability. Each class is 90 minutes long and encompasses the following components:
Group Exercise Sessions include warm-up, strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, balance and cool-down.
Independent Workout
Depending upon the individual, only a small amount of instruction may be necessary prior to exercising independently. Cardiovascular and strength training equipment such as: NuSteps, treadmills, arm cycles, wall pulleys, balance and stability balls, parallel bars, etc. are all available for use.
Personalized Training Before and/or after the group exercise, students can work with a personal fitness trainer to tailor a specific exercise program to meet their individual fitness and wellness goals. Great care will be taken to choose appropriate exercises with an emphasis on safety and adaptations for each individual.
Each participant is required to complete a new registration form. Masking and other requirements will be based upon the guidelines currently in effect that day. We will be providing cleaning supplies for your use, as you will be expected to clean the equipment prior to your using it. 1. A Bit of History – Mary Carnevale
How pleased I was to be able to attend the Fun After Fifty meeting on August 24th. It was different, I must say, but the Board and the Officers were very anxious to make things as comfortable as possible. Our Manager, Bruce, gave us very important information about the happenings going on at the Center and the welfare of the Seniors. I came away feeling very confident that our Center is still our home for friends and friendship. Come and Join us and make new friends.
Chocolate Chip Cookies Butter 5oz Granulated Sugar 4oz Brown Sugar 4oz Salt ½ tsp Eggs 3oz Vanilla Extract 1 tsp Pastry Flour 10oz Baking Soda ½ tsp Chocolate Chips 10oz Walnuts or Pecans Chopped 4oz Procedure Mixing: Creaming method, Blend in chocolate chips and nuts last. Makeup: Drop method, Use greased parchment lined baking sheets. Baking; 375 oven 8-12 min depending on size. TOLL HOUSE COOKIES Chocolate chip cookies in their many varieties are the most popular cookies in North America. They owe their origin to the TOLL HOUSE cookies, which are said to have been developed in the 1920s or 1930s by Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn in Whitman Massachusetts. The original Toll House cookies are simple butter cookies with semisweet chocolate morsels Mixed into the dough. Today’s chocolate chip or chocolate chunk cookies are likely to contain any kind of chocolate plus other ingredients, especially nuts, such as pecans, walnuts or macadamia nuts. Preparing •Wash hands, utensils, equipment, and work surfaces with warm soapy water before and after they come in contact with raw eggs and raw egg-containing foods. •Never leave eggs or egg dishes out of the refrigerator for more than 2 hours or for more than 1 hour when temperatures are above 90 degrees F. Bacteria that can cause illness grow quickly at warm temperatures. • ALWAYS PRACTICE FOOD SAFETY, PROPER FOOD HANDLING AND STORAGE. ENJOY!
