Spirit…and Lockers!

John Sedgwick’s inaugural

year of middle school is in full

swing, and it is our sincere

hope that our families are

pleased overall with our

transition to a middle school.

Hours, days, months, and

years of planning went into

our transition, and many of

you helped make it a

relatively smooth one. To be

sure, there have been some

bumps along the way, but the

general feedback we have

r e c e i v e d h a s b e e n

positive. We want to thank

families for completing our

Family Transition Survey. Our

Building Leadership Team

took a preliminary look at the

responses during our first

meeting on Oct. 26th. We are

planning to extend the

deadline for the survey

through Nov. 3, and we will

have laptops available for

families to complete the

survey at our upcoming

Parent Conferences.”

This newsletter comes on

the heels of our first middle

school Fall Spirit Week.

During Spirit Week, all three

grade levels showed off their

school spirit by dressing up

according to each day’s

theme and engaged in

friendly competition for the

Spirit Award – a medallion

that hangs from the neck of

the eagle in our commons.

Students earn points for

their grade level by dressing

up, competing in lunch time

Forty-nine 8th grade

Generals serve as WEB

Leaders, providing fun

activities to our new 6th and

7th graders. Their homeroom

advisory visits are intended to

increase a sense of belonging

and safety for our new

students, using playful fun to

help the students make new

friends. The WEB leaders

serve as mentors, guiding

new students toward middle

school success, answering

their questions and giving

them moral support.

Coming soon: National

Mix It Up at Lunch Day

encourages students to

expand their comfort zones

and connect with someone

new over lunch. It’s a fun,

effective way to break down

social barriers and inspire

new friendships. The WEB

Leaders are p lanning

school-wide participation in

National Mix It Up at Lunch

Day on Monday, October 30.

games, earning Caught

Being a General tickets, and

showing off their class spirit

during our end-of-week pep

assembly. Our first spirit

week will be remembered as

the most competitive we have

had, with our 6th graders

barely eeking out a victory

over our 8th graders by 14

total points! Stay tuned for

the results of future Spirit

Weeks.

As we approach the end of

1st quarter, we have more

great news to share! Among

the many curricular, cultural,

and structural changes we

have made to serve our

students and address our

middle school philosophy, one

“loose end” is about to be

tied. I am speaking of new

lockers. Yes, you read that

correctly…we are getting new

lockers!

Specif ical ly, we are

scheduled to receive 819 new

l o c k e r s w i t h b u i l t - i n

combination locks on Dec. 21,

the first day of Winter Break.

Removal of old lockers and

installation of new lockers

should occur prior to our

return to school on January

4. This means that we will

conduct a locker clean-out

just prior to Winter Break,

and we will issue new lockers

when students return from

break.

New lockers come with

two primary benefits. First,

students will no longer have

to lug their backpacks around

school all day, alleviating

stress on their growing

spines. Second, backpacks

will no longer be afoot

throughout the building,

eliminating tripping hazards.

Our new lockers will be

large enough to fit backpacks,

and once installed, students

will be asked to not carry their

backpacks with them during

the school day. Instead, they

will leave their backpacks in

their lockers upon arriving to

school and only take their

binder and books they need

to class. They will return to

their lockers between classes

to swap out books, and they

will take their backpacks

home with them at the end of

the day if they have

homework. More details and

instructions for students will

be provided as we approach

Winter Break.

Fired up!

Dan Novick

We are in need of

tutors to assist with our AVID

elective classes at all 3

grade levels; 6th grade during

period 5, 7th grade during

period 2, and 8th grade during

period 4. AVID tutors play a

vital role in the AVID elective

class, while also benefiting

other content area classes.

Using their knowledge,

AVID tutors facilitate learning

in study groups by subject

that leads to increased

student participation and

success. Tutors help create

an environment where

students feel comfortable

asking questions and deepen

their understanding of

content and concepts in a

collaborative, supportive

setting.

Tutors are essential to the

success of AVID, acting as a

resource and role model for

A V I D s t u d e n t s b o t h

academically and socially.

If you are interested in this

opportunity, we will provide

the necessary training needed

to become an AVID tutor.

Intramural Basketball Schedule

Intramural sports for 6th grad-

ers got off to a great start this

year at Sedgwick. With the

change to a middle school,

Sedgwick welcomed in 6th

graders to play team sports this

year for the first time. A total of

48 students participated in

Intramural Volleyball, Intramural

Football, and on Sedgwick’s

Cross Country team.

While the participation was

outstanding, of particular note

was the outstanding efforts by

the 20 boys on the IM Flag

Football team who went unde-

feated in their season. What a

great start to a new tradition at

John Sedgwick!

With the start of the Winter 1

sports season, there are some

changes coming to our Activities

Bus. Starting in November, any

student, not just those in 6th

grade students in Intramural

sports, can ride the Activity Bus

to one of our four elementary

schools as long as they are

participating in after school

activities such as teacher-led

student hall, sports or clubs. The

transportation department made

the change to make it easier for

families to pick up students who

may be in other grades at

Sedgwick.
