year winning this award but it is always an honor to do so and speaks to the continued quality of the AD team. (For more details please see the write up on subsequent pages) Finally, and speaking of the continued growth and expansion of our Analysis Division, we recorded another milestone this year. We now have our first paid participant; namely a new webmaster Damen Cole. In recent years the webpage has been managed by Phil Harris on a part time volunteer basis but as web data continues to grow - and Phil’s day job too – it was getting increasingly difficult to stay on top of the updates. So Phil asked for alternative help. Up to this point in Analysis Division history it has always been managed by a wonderful and evolving team of dedicated volunteers from within our industry but it was agreed now that ISA AD could support its own paid webmaster. Currently Damen and the AD management team are working on the new web design and we hope to have more details out to you shortly. But this offers more signals of continued growth for AD. So, without further ado and in recognition of another fine year at AD, please dive into the Fall Edition of our newsletter.

Message from the Director: It seems like only yesterday when I presented my first paper at ISA AD but in real time, that was over 15 years ago! Fast forward to today and I am proudly exiting in 2016 as the Director of ISA AD and handing over the reins to my successor, Dr. Paul Barnard. During my two years as Director, I have been honored to serve during our 60th anniversary year, welcome our first female Director-Elect-Elect, Cindy Cauthen, participate in the first ISA AD event overseas in Abu Dhabi this past October and see the Analysis Division win both the Outstanding Division and Division Excellence awards in 2016. While I am very proud of these accomplishments, I am most proud of the ISA AD team that I have had the pleasure to work with as Director over the last two years. It has been said, if you find something you love to do, you will never work a day in your life. My 2 years with ISA AD as Director has, without question, proven that true. The AD team continues to deliver a high quality technical symposium and continually strengthen our highly awarded Analysis Division brand with a collective sense of passion, camaraderie and sense of duty to our members. My sincerest and most heartfelt thanks goes out to the team! There are many ways for folks in our industry to participate in and contribute to ISA AD. Whether it be volunteering your time to help make each ISA AD event possible, writing and presenting a paper, teaching a class, exhibiting equipment or simply registering and attending a show, it all adds up to success in consistently delivering the best technical symposium in ISA. So, if you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, we would love to have you in the game no matter the magnitude of your involvement. I and the ISA AD team are looking forward to seeing you on April 23-27, 2017 in Pasadena for our 62nd ISA AD symposium. Onward and upward!

Director ISA Analysis Division (2015-2016)

First ISA Analysis Division UAE Symposium: The ISA Analysis Division presented the first ever AD symposium outside of North America on October 6th of this year (http://isa-analysis-uae.org/). The

organization for the symposium was a collaborative effort between DMS Global and the ISA Analysis Division. The participation far exceeded expectations with over 150 attendees from the Gulf Region in attendance. There were 3 sessions. 14 technical papers and 12 exhibitors. The Analysis Division Symposia have always enjoyed

great support from the Gulf Region with attendance over the last few years from UAE, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait,

Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and it was very gratifying to see attendance from all of these countries at the first ever Symposium held in the region. The organizers were most grateful to have Mr. Ahmed Shams, VP of Engineering and Technical Services / GASCO to serve as the event chair. Mr. Shams opened the proceedings with a key note address then turned the floor over to Tracy Dye, Director of the Analysis Division to welcome the attendees and open the technical session. The discussions were very lively and went well past the official end of the day. The process analyzer community in the region is growing beyond the well-established roots. Plans are underway to expand the event in October 2017 to two full days, six sessions covering; Analytical Techniques, Best Practices, Combustion, Environnemental, Gas Chromatography and Water Quality. The Analysis Division was very excited to bring the AD Symposium to this collection of devoted analyzer professionals and look forward to our future together.

Standards & Practices Chair: As we mentioned in our fall newsletter of 2015 Bac Vu announced (at the April 26 SP76 meeting at AD 2015) that he would be stepping down as chair of the Standards & Practices committee. Bac had given very generously of his time over the six years as chairperson and carried the additional heavy load in his role as Analyzer Team Leader, Chevron Engineering Technology Company (ETC). During his tenure Bac worked on several initiatives including NESSI modular sample systems standards and several years on a revised draft of “ISA-RP76.0.01-1998 - Analyzer System Inspection and Acceptance” for IEC which is still in progress. As he stepped down from his chair position Bac said he wishes to acknowledge the work Jim Tatera has put into the IEC Working Group on behalf of SP76. We are pleased to announce that at 2016 AD committee meeting Wes Carter (of Shell Global) has generously agreed to take on the role and continue the good work on behalf of the Analysis Division. Wes has long since been a very active member of the AD team, generously committing time and energy to the conference each year. We welcome him to the role and thank him for his time and effort on behalf of AD.

Analysis Division at the Honors & Awards Gala: It was a big night for the Analysis Division at the Honors & Awards banquet, Newport Beach Marriott, September 24. Tracy Dye was on hand to accept the ISA award for Division Excellence, Randy Hauer was elevated to ISA Fellow and Brian Rohrback took the award for Excellence in Analytical Technical Innovation. Paul Barnard (Director Elect 2017-2018) made double duty out of the trip west to view the AD-2017 facilities at the Pasadena convention center and attend the banquet. Jerry Clemons is always in the picture, Jerry is our AD Honors & Awards Chair and has served at many levels in the national society. Jerry brings his full range of talents as our H&A Chair; due diligence, patient persistence, and considerable charm to get our members through the nomination process and recognized for their dedication to our profession

Here is a summary of the award winners and what they have accomplished; The award for Excellence in Analytical Technical Innovation is endowed by the ISA Analysis Division. It recognizes an individual who has played a critical role in the conception, design, and implementation of an innovative product, process, or service in the analytical technology field. While the award is endowed by the AD it is a society wide award and there were several nominees in addition to the one name put forward by the AD. So of course we were all very proud to know it went to Brian Rohrback, Ph.D of Infometrix, Inc. Brian’s citation read in part; “For advancing the use of chemometrics in gas chromatography alignment software to reduce maintenance, improve precision, and simplify method development.” Brian joins an elite group of previous winners of this award. The Division Excellence award recognizes an ISA division for development and execution of programs and services to advance the mission of the Society. AD has taken this award on several occasions and we brought it home again this year for “establishing a technical program focused on advancements in analytical technologies and solutions, statistical quality assurance, process analysis, and cybersecurity.” This comes down to the perennial success of our annual symposium and also under Tracy’s leadership we added a plenary session on cybersecurity that was a very timely topic and widely attended. Randy Hauer of Ametek Process Instruments was made an ISA Fellow for his lifetime work of training process operators and analyzer technicians on sulfur recovery process chemistry and control. The citation read in part “For advancing the creation of on-line analyzers and other process improvements for sulfur recovery.” The grade of ISA Fellow is granted in recognition of outstanding

achievements in scientific or engineering fields as recognized by their ISA peers. Getting other members elevated to Fellow status requires a quorum of legacy Fellow members to participate in the nomination process each year. Jerry makes it his mission to see our members recognized in this way so they can pass this on to others equally deserving.

Gilmer, Thomasson, Fowler, Konrad (GTFK) Award for AD 2016: Each year at close of the AD Symposium, the award is made for the top three papers from the Symposium. The GTFK award is named after four distinguished and significant contributors to the technical content of the Analysis Division. We must never lose site of the fact that without the papers there would be no symposium. For that purpose I would like to give thanks to all of the authors and especially those who presented for their first time. I would also like to thank the peer review committee of seven very experienced analyzer professionals; Dr. Jerry Clemons, Dr. Jerry Combs, Dr. Paul Cammarata, the Honourable Michael Singletary, Ron Eddleman, Manny Alvarez and Roy Muston. All coordinated by the very capable hands of Rod Spitler. The written papers are first graded in advance of the symposium by the review committee for; technical merit, originality, completeness, applicability, clarity and illustrations accounting for 70% of the overall score. During the symposium the audience is asked to participate in the scoring based on; presentation, technical merit and impact accounting for remaining 30% of the overall score. This year the scoring was particularly close and the audience score closely matched that of the committee. After the final tally only 5 points separated the top 12 papers and only 0.71 points separated of the top three winners which were;

In closing I will add as I do every year; the AD community can consider the call for papers now open. It is not too early to consider a position for AD-2017.

Message from the Symposium Chair: The ISA AD organizing committee looks forward to welcoming the Analyzer Community to the wonderful location of Pasadena, CA for the 2017 Analytical Division Symposium. While the annual symposium has had a natural “Home Base” in the Houston area, attempts are made by the committee to ensure that other locations are served. To this end California has hosted symposia in 2006 and 2012, both in Anaheim. Other recent locations have been Baton Rouge [2014], New Orleans [2010] and Calgary, AB [2003, 2008]. The Pasadena location is set at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains that run across the northern edge of the greater Los Angeles area, not too distant from the famous Mount Wilson Observatory. Home of the well-known Rose Bowl, Pasadena offers a small town feel in a large urban environment, and is well served by the airports of LAX, Burbank, and Ontario. Not to mention that it is also very close (20 miles or so) to the Hollywood area of LA with all the sightseeing and excitement that can offer. The symposium will have a full 3 day program, and in addition will hold training programs before and after the symposium proper, along with a separate day long discussion on the topic of Analyzers and Automation Control. We look forward to seeing you in April. Ryan Mead
