ons The Complete Frida Kahlo:

Her Paintings. Her Life. Her Story. This fall, South Shore Arts brings you an inspirational, cultural, and historic exhibition based on the life and work of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, arguably the most important female artist of the 20th century and an emblem of Latina pride.

Organized by Global Entertainment Properties, Los Angeles, California, over 100 hand-painted, licensed recreations of Kahlo’s paintings executed in her Magic Realist style will be on view. This is the only exhibit worldwide that follows the artist’s life and development from a hobbyist to a mature, revolutionary and contemporary artist. Also on display will be 30 hand-woven and embroidered dresses from Mexico, jewelry, artifacts, and historic photographs detailing the life of this pivotal artist.

Frida Kahlo de Rivera (1907-1954) was born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón in the borough of Coyoacán, Mexico City. One of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father, originally from Germany, and a mother of Mexican-Indian and Spanish descent, she grew up in what is known today as Casa Azul or the Blue House.

Kahlo did not originally plan to become an artist. She had survived polio in her youth and had entered a pre-med program in Mexico City. But at the age of 18, she was tragically injured, riding in a bus that collided with a trolley car. She suffered serious injuries, including fractures to her spinal column, ribs, pelvis and collarbone, as well as fractures in her right leg, a crushed and dislocated right foot, and a dislocated shoulder.

After months in a full body cast, isolated from other people, Kahlo recovered from her injuries. It was during her convalescence that she began to paint. Her mother had a special easel made to enable her to paint in bed, and her father gave her a box of paints and brushes. Kahlo painted to occupy her time while immobilized, and the isolation influenced her works. Although she recovered from her injuries and eventually regained her ability to walk, Kahlo had health problems for the rest of her life. She endured more than 30 operations, and the medical complications and damage prevented her from ever having a child.

As a young artist, Kahlo approached the famous Mexican painter Diego Rivera, whose work she admired, asking him for advice about pursuing art as a career. He recognized and encouraged her talent, as well as her unique expression and style, and they soon began an intimate relationship. At 22, Kahlo married Rivera, who was 20 years her senior. Their marriage was volatile yet passionate, surviving infidelities, the pressures of careers, divorce and remarriage. Their partnership was referred to as “The Elephant and the Dove,” a nickname originated by Kahlo’s father to express their extreme difference in size.

Traditional Mexican culture figures prominently in Kahlo’s work, which has sometimes been characterized as

folk art. The influence is apparent in her use of vibrant colors, dramatic symbolism and primitive style, along with her love of lavish indigenous Mexican dress. She frequently included the symbolic monkey from Mexican mythology, which she portrayed as tender and protective. Her lifelong health problems, as well as her personal relationship struggles, are reflected in her intense subject matter, incorporating symbolic portrayals of physical and psychological wounds.

During her lifetime, Kahlo created nearly 200 paintings, drawings and sketches, of which 55 are self-portraits. Asked why she so often depicted herself, she replied, “Because I am so often alone—because I am the subject I know best.”

While never considering herself a Surrealist, Kahlo befriended André Breton, one of the primary figures in that movement, in 1938. That same year, she had a major show at a New York City gallery and sold half of the paintings on view. In 1939, Kahlo moved to Paris, where she exhibited her art and developed friendships with Picasso and Duchamp. She divorced Rivera later that year, and, during this time, painted one of her most famous works, The Two Fridas. The painting depicts two versions of Kahlo sitting side by side with her heart exposed, one figure in white with a damaged heart, the other in bold colors, the heart intact, the two figures believed to represent “unloved” and “loved” versions of the subject. A replication of this painting, a hand-made dress, and earrings she wore (a gift of Picasso) are included in the exhibition.

Kahlo and Diego did not stay divorced for long. They remarried in 1940, living out the remainder of their days at the Blue House, while continuing to lead largely separate lives. Both were active in Mexico’s Communist Party. In July 1954, Kahlo made her last public appearance, when she participated in a Communist street demonstration. Soon after, at the age of 47, she passed away. One year later, Rivera gave the house to the Mexican government to become a museum. Rivera himself died in 1957. On July 12th, 1958, the Blue House officially opened as the Museo Frida Kahlo.

Over the years, Kahlo’s fame as an artist has grown exponentially. The feminist movement of the 1970s led to renewed interest in her life and work, when she came to be viewed as an icon of female creativity. In 2002, her life was the subject of the film Frida, starring Salma Hayek as the artist and Alfred Molina as Rivera. Directed by Julie Taymor, the film was nominated for six Academy Awards.

The Complete Frida Kahlo includes hand-painted replicas fully licensed by Banco De Mexico, Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo Museums Trust/VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2008, in addition to Mexican folk art, furniture, jewelry and costumes important to her life story. An audio guide will be available to accompany the exhibit. For further information, visit www.completefrida.com.

South Shore Arts celebrated a milestone this year with the 40th Annual Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition. Over 30 schools from Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties in Indiana, and south suburban Cook County in Illinois participated with artwork created by 6th through 12th grade students covering every inch of wall space and pedestals.

Thanks to the ongoing generosity of patrons and sponsors, South Shore Arts awarded over $7,500 in prizes and scholarships. Many donors have been sponsoring awards for years, and every year, our appeal for prize money receives an enthusiastic response. Newly added this year was the Alexandra Gardner Riddle Memorial Award, the Robert & Cynthia Cutler Award of Excellence and the Paul Weinberg Memorial Award. For the ninth consecutive year, Indiana University Northwest sponsored the exhibit with additional support from Arctic Engineering.

The prestigious Donald H. Berwanger Scholarship of $2,500 for a graduating high school senior planning to pursue a degree in fine art was awarded to Hannah Pittman of Lake Central High School after a tough jurying process with 15 talented applicants. Hannah will be attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago this fall.

In addition to awards for individual students, trophies were presented for Best Overall School with Blick Art Materials adding $250 in art supplies. The Best Overall Junior High winner was Grimmer Middle School, Schererville, and the Best Overall Senior High winner was Lake Central High School, St John.

Beaux Arts Ball Sponsors

The 21st Annual Beaux Arts Ball was truly a magical night for South Shore Arts. We had all the elements of success, a great cause, engaged and generous board and committee members, incredible staff, a supportive community, wonderful attendees and, yes, a little bit of luck. What a resounding success! The Ball sold out four weeks before the event. Net proceeds were $198,780—that’s $31,600 over last year and $22,100 over budget—our best result ever!

The Ball is South Shore Arts’ primary fundraiser with proceeds benefitting our everykid art education programs for children, youth and families. The Ball’s success allows South Shore Arts to sustain and grow these programs despite unexpected disruptions in funding. This year, the everykid program served almost 30,000 children and youth in Northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago!

Our theme this year was Hello Dali!, and we did have some fun with it. Somehow, through the genius of Judith Mayer, board member and owner of Keyword Design, our invitation featured a “Dali” version of the title character of the iconic musical, matchmaker Dolly Levi. Jackie Wickland and her team put together centerpieces reminiscent of Dali’s Meditative Rose with giant red roses gracing each table. Melting clocks completed the décor.

Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to our Beaux Arts Ball Co-Chairs Sandi Kozlowski, Julie Mintz, and Cherie Rippey, their fabulous committee, board and staff. Thanks and recognition also go to all of the community donors who supported the silent and live auctions.

Speaking of the LIVE auction, a special treat this year was Elliott From of ArtbeatLive, who painted a large-scale Blackhawks logo in less than eight minutes. It was the first standing ovation of the night and really got the party rolling!

Major sponsors of the 21st Annual Beaux Arts Ball were Diamond Sponsors ArcelorMittal, BP and the Morrow Family Foundation, plus event sponsors BMO Harris

Bank, Community Healthcare System, Hammond Machine Works, Inc., Lexus of Merrillville, Majestic Star Casino and NIPSCO. Judith Mayer, owner of Keyword Design, provided the invitation and program design, and Tom Largus of Largus Printing donated the invitations. James & Sons donated the very chic turquoise stingray bracelet with diamonds and sapphires for our raffle.

Mark your calendars for next year. The 22nd Beaux Arts Ball is scheduled for June 5, 2015.

South Shore Arts Instructor Recognized for 30 Years of Service

Nikki Kutansky with artwork by his students

Down the spiral staircase to the studios, the faint sound of music can be heard from the room at the end of the hall. The sign above the door reads, “Studio B,” but most of his students know it as “Nikki’s Room.” Aside from the music, the room is silent with a few hushed critiques between stu-dents. A pregnant woman, a college student, a tattoo artist and a grandmother are working on their drawings. This is typical of Nikki’s classes.

A modest mentor. A dedicated instructor. An artist. A friend. Nikki Kutansky is many things to many people. He is part of what makes South Shore Arts special. Nikki Kutansky was the recipient of the first South Shore Arts Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Beaux Arts Ball in recognition of his 30 years teaching students of all ages. The Ball was the perfect venue for the award since the proceeds go to support the South Shore Arts Education Department. Executive Director John Cain presented Nikki with the award.

“Every year since the Beaux Arts Ball began, we have bestowed a Patron of the Year Award on one of our individual or corporate donors,” John explained. “This year, we’re doing something a little different. This year, we’re giving a Lifetime Achievement Award to someone who is not a donor, but someone who has nevertheless supported artists and arts education for many years.”

“When I was told that I was to receive an award, I was rendered speechless. For anyone who knows me, that never happens,” Nikki laughed. “During the Ball, I was overwhelmed and truly moved by the response from the crowd.” Nikki received a standing ovation.

South Shore Arts takes pride in the quality of our classes and talented staff, but most importantly we understand that the arts are about cultivating community, sharing ideas and creative growth. Nikki is a purveyor of that philosophy.

“I consider my students to be my apprentices. I treat my classes like an apprenticeship, the same as a carpenter or another skilled trade,” says Nikki. “I demonstrate everything. You need to ‘see’ before you can learn. I believe that there is inherent talent in my students, but knowledge is the key. I want my students to learn the tools needed to be capable artists.”

Drawing student Holly Demantes says of Nikki’s teaching style, “Nikki shares his love of music, books, art, and culture while teaching. It is not only about how to draw. His classes are truly inspiring and a joy.”

Nikki always goes above and beyond what is expected of him as an instructor. He has developed a dedicated following of students with his classes, which fill up each term. His upcoming classes for children and adults in the South Shore Arts fall schedule include Introduction to Cartooning, Advanced Cartooning/Super Heroes, and Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced Drawing.

“Through the years, he has been our most popular instructor, teaching both children and adults the fine art of drawing on all levels—beginning, intermediate and advanced—and many otherwise grumpy young boys the

art of cartooning and Super Heroes,” John remarked in making the award. “His dedication to his students has been unparalleled. Many of his young students stay with him from childhood through high school. His following among adults is equally impressive.”

Parents of students also recognize the value of Nikki’s classes. Stacey Taylor’s son Conor has been taking his classes for nearly ten years. She offers this insight, “My son Conor started taking classes with Nikki in 3rd grade, and he will be a senior in high school this year! He has been a wonderful influence on Conor and is a terrific mentor. He has really sparked Conor’s love of art.”

Dedication and patience are two qualities South Shore Arts seeks in our instructors. Nikki exemplifies those qualities. When longtime student Tori Michalski was asked about her experience with his classes, she had an enthusiastic and candid response: “Nikki is without a doubt the greatest instructor I’ve had. I am grateful for everything he has taught me over the past few years. I don’t believe anyone else would have had such patience with me for holding my pencil too high or making everything too dark.”

Thirty years ago, five years before the Center for Visual and Performing Arts opened, Nikki began teaching with South Shore Arts on Calumet Avenue. He has nurtured the talents of hundreds of students through our organization. He has established his legacy, which continues to flourish beyond the walls of his classroom.
