North, South, East & Jim West

Heads Our Way in MarchOne of the highlights of the year at South Shore Arts is the week when the puppets come to town. The puppet shows of internationally-acclaimed puppeteer Jim West and his hilarious assistant Jeremy Wingle are both educational and entertaining. Filled with facts, cultural story-telling, classical music and puppet-making demonstrations, these 50-minute shows are geared towards children aged 4 to 10 but are really appropriate for people of all ages.

This years’ show is North, South, East & Jim West, a multi-faceted puppet production that introduces children to a variety of cultures, including Chinese, Native Ameri-can, African and European. Students will travel to fun and exotic locations through tales steeped in traditional folklore. “Little One” tells the story of a Native American boy who wants to fly. “Anansi the Spider” is a wise, mischievous and loveable folk hero who pops up in traditional Ashanti tales from Ghana in West Africa. “The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg” is among the best known of Aesop’s fables. “The Story of the Chinese Dragon” tells of a little boy who wishes that he could have his very own New Year’s dragon. His wish comes true when he learns that he can build one for himself out of a box!

Page 5: South Shore Arts Spring 2012 Convergence Magazine

These educational tales give students a taste of the diversity of the world in which they live. Children see that dreams and ideas are universal phenomena that occur in every culture. Using a variety of puppet-making techniques, the puppeteers give children creative puppet project suggestions that can be used at home or in the classroom.

South Shore Arts offers free puppet workshops to classrooms that attend the puppet show. Through funding to the everykid program, a guest artist visits the classroom with all the supplies necessary to create a puppet of their own based on a puppet seen during the puppet show. This incredible value gives children two art exposures for the price of one: they see a puppet show and then get to make a puppet of their own.

Because children witness, understand and then experience the process of puppet-making, they are able to make a connection between viewing art and making art themselves. West also discusses theater etiquette and terms with the children, and introduces them to the people who work behind the scenes in the theatre such as light and sound technicians. The show gives children a theatrical experience at a young age to generate a life-long love of the arts and live performance.

Jim West began his career in puppetry in 1978 working with his mentor, Marshall Izen, a classical musician and winner of two Emmy Awards for his work in children’s television programming. Izen used classical music in his puppet productions, and West continued this tradition when he carried on the shows and developed new ones of his own upon Izen’s retirement. Today, Jim West puppet shows feature excerpts from Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Stravinsky and Prokoviev among other classical composers.

Together, Izen and West co-authored Why the Willow Weeps, and the Parent’s Choice Award winning The Dog that Sang at the Opera. Especially known for his dexterity in shadow puppetry, West developed and performed shadow puppets for the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Manon. He appeared as a guest on Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood and introduced Fred Rogers and countless children to the art of creating hand shadows.

In the shadow puppet segment of his show, West suggests using hand shadows to “help your little brother with his fear of the dark.” His messages are subtle but powerful: “Anyone can make a puppet”—“Materials for puppet-making are easy to find in your own home”—“It’s okay to make a mistake”—“The theater is a wonderful form of entertainment”—“Classical music is enjoyable”—“Making and using puppets provides a way to express ourselves.” This accessibility to an art form that is creative and fun is also empowering.

During his 33-year puppeteer career, Jim West has delighted audiences with puppet shows such as Aesop’s Fables I and II, Animal Crackers, Dinosaurs, Mozart, Monsters and Matisse, How the Elephant Got His Nose, Pop-ups, Puppets and Parades, and North, South, East & Jim West. All shows are curriculum-based to meet educational standards.

Jeremy Wingle joined the show in 2008. Both performers are New York residents, but travel extensively with the show both throughout the United States and internationally. They are both Performance Arts graduates, but they credit their audiences with being their true inspiration. “Our goal is to motivate children to try puppet-making themselves,” says West. “In the world of puppet-making, it’s imagination rather than perfection that counts.”

Jim West will perform at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts on March 6, 7, 8 and 9 at 9:30 and 11am. Tickets must be purchased in advance. To reserve a rip-roaring good time, call 219/836.1839, ext 100.

The spring exhibit lineup for 2012 offers visitors to South Shore Arts a varied visual experience that spans generations and cultures. The main gallery at The Center for Visual & Performing Arts features one of South Shore Arts’ most popular exhibitions, the 38th Annual Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition. This exhibition will run from April 22 through May 20, 2012. Gallery hours are Monday–Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm and Sunday Noon to 4pm.

For 38 years, South Shore Arts has recognized excellence in the artistic achievements of young people and the teachers who nurture within them an appreciation and awareness for beauty, creativity, and diversity of thought. The first high school exhibition for grades 9-12 was held in 1974 under the board presidency of Anne Beckman, but it was not until the 20th Annual Tri–County exhibition in 1995 that seventh- and eighth-graders began exhibiting alongside upperclassmen. Sixth graders were added to the exhibit in 2008.

Every year, several thousand dollars in monetary prizes are awarded to participating artists, along with the Berwanger Scholarship for a graduating high school senior planning to attend an accredited art school. Trophies are given for the best overall school display on both the junior and senior high school levels. These awards have not only increased in number but also in value over the years, thanks to the ongoing generosity and support of the patrons of South Shore Arts. This has enabled South Shore Arts to recognize student excellence, while also providing students with the funding to pursue art and art-related degrees at the university level. South Shore Arts looks forward to keeping this crowd-pleasing favorite around for many more years to come!

Another highlight of the spring exhibit season is an exhibition of works on paper by the Israeli artist Aharon Shoshany. Mr. Shoshany, who died in 2006, was one of the first children born in Israel’s Kibbutz Movement to parents who were among the founders of the movement’s agricultural settlements. The young Shoshany worked the fields of his home, Kibbutz Ginegar. He was also a fighter in many important battles in Israel’s Independence War. The British imprisoned Mr. Shoshany for 9 months with Yitzhak Rabin, later Israel’s Prime Minister, who was assassinated in 1995.

In the early 1950s, Aharon left the Kibbutz and its pastures for the prestigious Avni Institute of Art and Design. Under the guidance of preeminent painters Moshe Mokady, Yehezkel Streichman and Avigdor Stematzky, he completed his formal schooling. Throughout his life he continued his studies with renowned artists Yehiel Krize, Naftali Bezam, Yosef Zaritsky and Yaakov Wexler.

The artist’s work was widely viewed and exhibited in dozens of solo and group exhibits during his lifetime both in Israel and in Europe. His drawings appeared regularly in various daily newspapers, magazines and publications across Israel, and have won many awards. His drawings and paintings hang in collections all over the world, as well as in significant Israeli art collections, including the President’s Residence of the State of Israel. Works On Paper by Aharon Shoshany, 1925–2006 will be exhibited from March 9 through April 22, 2012. Hours for viewing this exhibit are Monday–Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 4pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm.

At the Crown Point branch of South Shore Arts located at 123 N. Main Street visitors can enjoy The Heritage Barns of Indiana, First Fifty, an exhibit borrowed from the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. This show includes 50 original oil paintings of historical barns from 32 counties of Indiana by Fort Wayne artist, Gwen Gutwein. Each painting comes with historical background and architectural information. The project is an artistic gem but also speaks of the history and culture of Indiana as a whole.

Gwen Gutwein grew up on a farm in Northwest Indiana and understands the beauty, heritage, and nostalgia contained in barns. When she began to notice the disappearance of these structures from her landscape, she made a conscious decision to capture some forever on canvas. She set a goal to paint two barns from each of the 92 counties in Indiana. Because of her energy and ambition,

along with funding from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, she has already completed paintings of barns in 32 counties. Hours for the Crown Point location are Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 4pm.

At Substation No. 9 in Hammond, South Shore Arts will present Emotions: Photography by Lora Mercado, March 23 through May 12, 2012. Ms. Mercado has dabbled in photography for some time, but recently made the conscious decision to focus her energies on this new venture in her life. This will be her first solo exhibition. Photos representing grace, honor and tranquility that were taken in cemeteries throughout Northwest Indiana and also at the Veterans’ Memorial in Munster will be on display. Hours for Substation No. 9 are Wednesday through Saturday 10am to 2pm.

South Shore Arts hosted a free Family Day on Sunday, December 11, during the American Pop exhibit. Linda Eyermann, South Shore Arts Director of Education, led the families in a Pop Art project using bold colors and layering techniques. Families chose images from popular culture such as peace signs, lightening bolts and words like “WOW” and ‘POW” to create a take-home piece of artwork that mimicked Pop artists of the 1960s. Executive Director John Cain read Uncle Andy’s, written and illustrated by the artist’s nephew James Warhola, which documented a faaabbbulous visit with his uncle in the 1950s. Door prizes included a festive Pop Art bag filled with none other than Tootsie Pops, popcorn, Pop-Tarts and pop (as in soda)! Highland and Munster McDonald’s gave away free breakfast and lunch sandwiches.

School groups visiting the American Pop exhibit learned about the history of the Pop Art movement, the artists involved and its key elements. They also learned where the term “Pop” came from (popular culture). Students took key elements of Pop Art such as bright colors, everyday objects, repetition and overlapping to create their own Pop Art piece.

Holiday ReadingJohn Cain presented his 18th Annual Holiday Reading on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster, a holiday tradition that has kicked off the season since 1994. “Gnome for the Holidays” was a humorous compilation of gnomes in literature—most of it made up! More than 350 supporters attended, enjoying wine in the gallery followed by a holiday lunch before John delighted everybody with his reading. Each table had a different gnome centerpiece thanks to Mary Bird who loaned out her private collection and Liz Messing from The Artful Garden. Gift Shop Manager Jackie Wickland once again organized all of the centerpieces and they looked great.

Director of Education Linda Eyermann had some fun with Photoshop, placing gnomes cuddled up with past attendees in a humorous slide show. Gnomes were everywhere! Cinda Urschel and her group even donned homemade gnome rings and hats for the reading.

John’s Holiday Reading is South Shore Arts’ second largest fundraiser netting close to $14,000 in much needed support. Special thanks to our sponsors Vanis Salon & Day Spa and Community Healthcare System, as well as raffle contributors Albert’s Diamond Jewelers, Strack & Van Til, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, El Taco Real, It’s Just Serendipity, Downtown Hammond Council and Rosemary’s Heritage Flowers. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 13, 2012, for John’s 19th Annual Holiday Reading.

Festival of TreesThe Women’s Association of the Northwest Indiana Symphony (WANISS) presented the 23rd Annual Festival of Trees for the benefit the Symphony on Wednesday, December 7, 2011. The Center for Visual and Performing Arts teemed with four hundred guests as they strolled the Avenue of Trees in the upper atrium of the Center and visited the Avenue of Shoppes in the lower atrium. Concurrently, the sounds of carolers were heard throughout the venue.

The luncheon was topped off with a birthday cake complete with candles, sparklers and the singing of “Happy Birthday” in honor of the Symphony’s 70th birthday. Linda Eisenhauer introduced Florence Long (nee Kettler), who on December 7, 1941, was a violinist playing in the Symphony at the time the announcement of the attack on Pearl Harbor was made. The major highlight of the luncheon was entertainment provided by the Brass Quintet of the Northwest Indiana Symphony. The Quintet’s repertoire was varied and included traditional as well as international Christmas music together with martial airs in keeping with the date of December. 7.

“Thomas Ray Crowel hits the mark with this one. Just as a sharpshooter zeroes in on his unlucky target, Crowel takes aim and leads his reader down a col-orful path in the Civil War era. His skillful use of dialogue takes us to a painful, bygone time when the nation struggled with a devastat-ing war that would decide if we would stand together or forever be divided. This is a page turner! Sit back and enjoy a great trans-formation to the days of Blue and Grey. It’s a journey worth taking.” — George Sheldon, author of When the Smoke Cleared at Gettysburg and Fire on The River
