As part of the allocations grant program, Allied Arts board members, volunteers and supporters reviewed member agency financial documents and applications to distribute funding from the 2013 campaign. The process, which also includes two days of agency presentations on program outcomes and community impact, helps ensure transparency and accountability to you, the Allied Arts donor.

After the review, the Allied Arts board of directors approved the distribution of $2.55 million in support of the local cultural community.

educating youth through the arts

To ensure all children have the opportunity to experience the arts, Allied Arts created the educational Outreach Program in 2005. The grant program helps expand the scope and reach of arts programming for k-12 students with a focus on underserved youth in central Oklahoma.

For the first time, Allied Arts has opened the educational outreach grant program to all

qualified arts nonprofits in central Oklahoma. As a result, wereceived a historic number of proposals for consideration in the first grant cycle of the 2014 fiscal year. In total, Allied Arts received 24 proposals – seven from non-member

agencies. Applicants have the opportunity to receive cash grants and gift cards for the procurement of arts supplies and materials.

In September, a committee of board members reviewed each proposal to ensure that requests met the requirement of providing hands-on arts experiences to Oklahoma children. As a result, Allied Arts awarded $74,700 in grants in the first funding cycle of the 2014 fiscal year.

Projects include a partnership between [Artspace] at untitled and Big Brothers Big Sisters for “littles” totour the untitled gallery, participate in an art workshop and take home an art kit; an afterschool arts program for Millwood Arts Academy students at the national cowboy & western Heritage Museum; and scholarship programs for oklahoma Youth orchestras and The Sooner Theatre.

Did you know that the total fine arts budget in the 55 Oklahoma City public elementary schools totals $75,000?

That’s less than $2 per student.

The deadline for the second cycle of funding this fiscal year is January 24, 2014.All grant applications can be found online at www.AlliedArtsOKC.com/grants.

Allied Arts also granted $42,604 to 18 arts nonprofit organizations through the Capacity building grant program. Funding from this year’s grants will help provide strategic planning sessions and financial audits to ensure long-term sustainability of the organizations; underwrite professional development opportunities for staff and board members; and fund technological advancements to improve website, database and software capabilities.

Allied Arts president/CEO, Deborah McAuliffe Senner joins board members Alison Taylor and Debbie Nauser to present the 2013 Zach D. Taylor Volunteer Award to Jean Hartsuck.

At the June 2013 board meeting, Jean Hartsuck was presentedwith the fifth annual Zach D. Taylor Volunteer Award for her outstanding service to Allied Arts. She has regularly servedas a campaign volunteer and played an integral role in theaddition of new member agencies to Allied Arts. below is a Q&A with this year’s Allied Arts volunteer of the year.

How long have you been volunteering with Allied Arts?I joined the board of Allied Arts about eight years ago. Before that time, I had helped solicit gifts during the campaign.

How did you get involved with Allied Arts? What was your first volunteer post? When the allocation formula was being revised, I was asked to join the task force charged with exploring new, fairer ways to apportion monies among the member agencies. As a follow-up to that, I chaired the allocation committee.

What keeps you engaged with Allied Arts? The arts are a passion of our family. We attend concerts, plays and operas and visit museums whenever possible. Allied Arts is working to engage many in our community so that, hopefully, they can have pleasurable experiences just as we do.

What is your favorite Allied Arts memory? My husband and I enjoy the Circle Club functions. We always meet interesting people. Also, I will never forget the year the campaign celebration was held at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. There was a long ‘alligator’ whose body parts showed the campaign total of just over $2,000,000. Crossing that number was very important to everyone there. Of course, now the campaign total has grown to over $3,000,000.

What would you tell someone who is thinking aboutvolunteering with Allied Arts?Allied Arts serves the entire community. If you believe in the benefits that a robust arts community brings to our city, there is no more vital place to put your efforts.

How do you spend your time when you’re not volunteering with Allied Arts?I also work with the Oklahoma City Orchestra League and serve as treasurer of our church. My husband and I are both retired so we are able to travel a lot. We are ‘italianophiles’ and have season tickets at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. We have nine grandchildren, but only two of them live inOklahoma. Consequently, we go to Dallas and Austin frequently.

What’s your favorite way to experience the local arts scene? This question is impossible. We enjoy so much: music, theater and museums. I would not want to name one because that would mean I had omitted at least 15 other organizations.

What does it mean to you to have been recognized with the Zach D. Taylor Volunteer Award?Zach was one of the first Allied Arts board members I met. In my opinion, he was a consummate volunteer. Both his passion for Allied Arts and his intellect were at a level I cannot hope to achieve. I was shocked to be recognized with the award dedicated to him.

On July 19, Allied Arts hosted Robert Lynch, president of the Washington, D.C. - based Americansfor the Arts, for breakfast with local arts leaders.

earlier this year, Allied Arts was awarded a $5,000 matching grant from the kirkpatrick Family Fund to help build ourcharitable endowment fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation.
