President’s Message

Pablo Picasso has said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” I think you will find that this year’s annual is an extraordinary exhibition of water media art created by some of today’s finest artists will fill your soul with life’s possibilities and perhaps allow you to see the world differently through the creators’ eyes.

A big thank you to Gerald Brommer, Kathleen Conover, and Dean Mitchell for an outstanding job in choosing 80 fabulous paintings from almost 1000 entries as well as selecting our newest signature members. Our Awards Juror, Roxana Velasquez, was sensitive and discerning in choosing the awards and our traveling exhibition.

NATIONAL WATERCOLOR SOCIETY • 20136

As director of the International Exhibition, I wish to thank everyone who came together with all the time they took

away from their own artwork to create such a grand event. The works themselves are representative of almost every form of water-media.

Each year we add more and more painters from around the world to our roster of signature members. This year’s new signature members from the international community are Tan Suz Chiang, Malaysia; Pasqualino Fracasso, Italy; and Xiao Xing Hu, China.

And for the first time signature member and this year’s winner of the NWS Past President’s Award, David Poxon, in the UK

shared the ceremony with his dinner guests via Skype. We have been working very intensely to develop capabitilities for our members around the world to participate in our events and for us to be able to interact in theirs.

So stay tuned for more worldwide events, join us on Facebook and monitor the updates on our website. We are streamlining the entry process working on ways to create more inspi-ration around the world.

And to all the new friends made, all the new friends met again, it’s been a grand weekend, stay in touch, stay tuned and keep inspiring. Penny Hill, Exhibitions Director

Attend NWS Demos & Workshops Online World-Wide BY LINDA DOLL, PRESIDENT

NWS was fortunate to be able to present a fabulous lecture given by Dean Mitchell to our fellow artists both attending

at the gallery and to 15 testers who viewed this lecture online through GoToMeeting.com. It’s an exciting time when someone in Paris can view a lecture live taking place in San Pedro, CA.

Linda introduces Dean...

Participants watch in person..

We will be doing much more of this so watch the webpage and newsletters for announcements.

We also used Skype to allow David Poxon one of our newest signature members to view the Annual International Exhibition Awards Presentation live from the United Kingdom. We are excited to announce that all future Award Presentations will be able to be viewed live.

We will be streaming our Annual Business Meeting in January as well as several demos that will take place next year. Again check the webpage for more information.

Our Monthly Board Meetings are also attended by Board Members online which saves time and travel expenses and has allowed board members from around the country to attend easily.

Dean slides are seen by testers on their home computer.

Linda works out the bugs in real time for future online demos..

...then runs into office to get feedback from testers worldwide.David gets view of awards.. We see David get his award.

WORKSHOP • DEMONSTRATION • LECTURE SERIES 2013

The visual transformation from chaos to order is the best way to explain my

most commonly used approach to painting. Working spontaneously, intuitively and without expectations I combine color and gestural mark making to begin the layering process of my paintings. I remind my students, “this is the stage in a painting to best capture the creative energy of the initial

inspiration. This is the beginning “chaos” and this is also where I let the spirit of the fluid watercolor have a say. (Kathleen Conover)

Art doesn’t begin with a brush and a palette, but with the

artist’s ability to perceive life. You have to learn how to live before you can learn how to paint. I have always tried to maintain a sense of humanity in my work, to create something that will take on its own personality but also reflect something about our world. I gradually introduce my imagery until the painting (whether representational or abstract) is complete, the composition dramatic and the message subtle. (Dean Mitchell)

People and Still Life Subjects that hint at the person just outside the picture plane are Linda’s favorite painting

subjects. She portrays them without flattery or glamour in an aura of quietude, stressing their dignity and individuality. She combines areas of flat color with highly skilled composition and design to create an attitude of introspection when depicting her subjects.
