Last year, we invited community members to join us in various discussions on the livelihood of the agency as a whole. As many of you know, the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia was going through a financial crisis that threatened to close our doors. It has been a year since the initial meeting took place, and we are happy to say that, with support from members and individual donors, and strong dedication of board and staff, we are still able to provide all of our programs and services.

This has truly shown our community as a whole that we can overcome great obstacles when we work together. This year, we would like to invite CAGP members, supporters, and anyone interested in joining our family, to attend the next annual meeting that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at 10:00am at our North Office.

This year’s meeting is particularly important because we will be voting for the Executive Board for fiscal year 2013-2015. Because only members can cast their votes, we invite you to become a member of the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia, so that you can be an important part of this election. The meeting will also review CAGP’s programs and activities within the past year, and highlight a few key things we plan to accomplish within this year to come. We invite members to voice their opinions regarding our organization and share ideas that can help us grow and move forward. Please note that members also receive other perks just for being a member.

For more information about this event or to become a member, please contact us at (215) 324-4070 or Rorng Sorn at 215-971-3657. Thank you again for your support and we hope to see you at the Annual Meeting!

Teens Organizing Proactivity

The Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia has been a part of my life for four years. It is safe to say that CAGP has cultivated my entire high school, teenage life. CAGP has really changed my life for the better. I'm going to be a senior this year and I've truly grown. I started helping and volunteering since I was a freshman, and was given so many opportunities throughout my years. I learned new things, met new people, and even secured my spot in a summer internship. I can't see my life as it is now without CAGP. I know when I'm older I will still be involved with CAGP. -Tony Thomas, TOP Teen

Youths Dive into “Underwater Exploration” Project

Following its newly granted Keystone STARS 1 status, CAGP’s After School Program is working towards obtaining its second star. The program has been integrating cultural awareness and social development into its education-based program for over two decades. Thanks to PHMC and the City of Philadelphia for allowing us to continue to impact the lives of inner-city youth. Programming begins Sep. 16, 2013. Contact | Eddy Sacksith at [email protected]

After School Program

This year, the creative minds of summer camp staffs took youths on a journey of “Underwater Exploration”. Program Director Eddy Sacksith and SCP staff created a project that would get youths to learn about sea creatures – their habitat, purpose, etc. – while infusing reading, writing, presentations, art, science, and math. The normally yellow-colored walls were transformed into water waves of blue, and the light fixtures were decorated with hanging seaweed. The fun atmosphere encouraged youths to add their personal touches with colorful sea animals posted “underwater”. Using the project-based learning model, youths explored the question “How is the ocean represented through science and art?”

SCP staff organized a fun and exciting summer for youths. Many contributors are to thank for helping diversify what the program has to offer! Lanica Angpak taught traditional Khmer dance; Lauren Parker of Fleisher Community Partnerships in Arts worked with young campers to explore the underwater world and all the endless possibilities…(see page 12)

Bonn P’ka Raises $4,200 for Cambodian Cultural Program

Cambodian Cultural Program Made possible by the Philadelphia Activities Fund and fundraising events, the aim of the program is to preserve and promote Khmer (Cambodian) culture, and CAGP has been doing so by making traditional Khmer dance and language classes accessible to youths during the weekends. This year, by popular demand, we are happy to offer hip-hop dance classes. Programming begins Oct. 13, 2013 from 11am – 3pm. Contact | Putery Long at [email protected]

On Saturday, August 3, 2013, the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia’s Board President, Chantha Chum, organized a culturally significant fundraiser that helped raised money for the Cambodian Cultural Program. Bonn P’ka, translated as Ceremony of the Flower, is “a Buddhist tradition of raising funds to support a particular project proposed by the temple’s board or a member of the community,” says President Chum. She explains, “When you make a donation to the Bonn P’ka, you will receive blessing from the monks through their chanting and accumulate good karma for your future.”

We would like to thank the following people for their generous contribution: $20 - $90 Contributors: Doth Tran, Bunrath & Kagnchana Math, Sakhan Kim & Sor Sem, Chhor Young, Xiaoxi Yang, Prak Srey Mom, Ms. Sophea, Heang Thach, Nheb Chhai Lin, Ouch Soth, Hean Chea & Mom Sovanrith, Saron Yim & Sarath Sin, Seng Phai, Chantha M. …of creating their own sea creatures; Michael Thomas and his group of TOTR volunteers hosted weekly sports instruction and activities; and the Philadelphia OST Literacy Initiative lent us their collection of Marine Life books to enhance our summer reading program. As a special mid-week adventure, staffs took youths on six field trips across and beyond the city of Philadelphia; youths visited Camden Adventure Aquarium, the Franklin Institute, Bounce U, Brunswick Bowling, the

Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom.

This year is truly a remarkable one, as youths won first place at the 2013 Nutritional Development Services Summer Meals Program – Social Media Photo Contest. Youths used recyclable summer meal boxes and recreated their own underwater diorama. This enabled them to take home their very own mini recreation of the mural. The prize was a $50 gift card that will be used for program supplies. In addition to earning this prize money, staffs and youths alike have worked hard to raise over $900, so that they can take their finale trip to Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom.

CAGP would like to acknowledge our rising 6th graders, many of whom joined our OST program as kindergarteners: Jezalique, Annalees, Laura, Molynia, Le Shawn, Damoni, Kenya, David and Marven – we will miss you all! We wish you the best in your future education.

*The Summer Camp Program is made possible by the Public Health Management Corporation, City of Philadelphia SCOP Fund, and contributing parents. Thank you for an awesome summer!

Parenting Enhancement Program

Through this 12-week program, CAGP promotes and fosters parent-child relationships by reinforcing supportive behaviors of parents, and altering non-productive or harmful behaviors. Classes at the North office are from Sep. 19 to Dec. 15, and at the South Center from Feb. 5 to April 23. Classes are held at 10:30a to 12:30p at both locations. We would like to thank PHMC for making this program possible. Contact | Putery Long at [email protected]
