Brit March (Etna) will be one of two returning runners from last year’s team. She did well last year and should be a top Nor-Cal runner. Teri Szczepanek (Etna) comes in off of a very good track season will be a contender for one of the top three spots on the team. Molly Finn (Oroville) will be a top runner

in the Nor-Cal’s and comes into the season in great shape. Michele Osuno (Shasta) should fit right in on the team with her great work ethic. Samantha Magana (Foothill) is a solid runner with good potential to be a top five runner for us this year. Abbrieanna Reyna (Foothill) returns this year with a new outlook since she had a great track season last year. Kathleen Kelly is a new comer to the sport but should be a key part of the team’s success. This should be a very successful season for the lady Knights.

FOOTBALL

going to be thrust into action early on.Quarterbacks:Battling for the QB position will be red-shirt Matt Edwards (West Valley H.S.) and two newcomers Brad Lohse (Pleasant Valley H.S) and Chris Clark (Mount Si H.S., WA). All three come from the same type of mold, tall, good arm strength and athletic enough to carry out the necessary requirements for the QB position within the pistol offense. The thing that will separate the three will be the intangibles; leadership qualities, poise under pressure and the overall understanding and execution of the offense….who moves and manages the offense best.Running Backs:The running back position will see red-shirt Nate Gilligan (Fall River H.S), newcomers Zach Schwabauer (Red Bluff H.S.), Parker Jones (Central Valley H.S.), Devin Massey (Crater H.S., OR) and Edward Jefferson from Sacramento, battling for the starting role. This year’s running backs are uniquely different and could see their individual skills sets be putting to use for different situations. The offense will stress the importance of establishing a run game and look for this group to make solid contribution. Wide Receivers:Fighting for playing time at the WR positions will be sophomores’ Sam Diskin (Foothill H.S.), and Jared Holloway (Aloha H.S., OR), plus red-shirts freshman Josh Sayre (Oak Harbor H.S., WA), Kurt Cartwright (Trinity H.S.), and Andres Marquez (Corning H.S.). Entering the pool of bidding for spots are freshmen Ty Naylor (Central Valley H.S.), Anthony Cavalli (Enterprise H.S.), Chao Irvan-Jones (James Madison H.S., OR), Danny Christensen (Hudson’s Bay H.S., WA), Eric Newton (Fife H.S., WA) and Marcial Lawson (Foothill H.S.). This year’s WR group has size and individuals who can catch the ball and the Knights look forward to seeing the passing game progress week to week. Offensive Line:The Line is made of only two returning players; sophomore Kaulen Pevan, (Wasilla H.S., AK) and red-shirt freshman David Fife (West Valley H.S.). Rounding out the OL are freshman; Adam Muncy (Enterprise H.S.), Garrett German (Central Valley H.S.), Blake Tout (McQueen H.S., NV), Jacob Barker (Molalla Union H.S., OR), Caleb Roush (Heritage H.S., WA) and Nick Santillan (Anderson H.S.). Roman Anderson also will be serving as a TE and OL. The OL group is not blessed with great size or depth, but the Knights feel the group works well together,

and can be the nucleus that provides the energy and life of the offense.Defense:The Knights will be running a base 3-4 scheme and kick into 4-2 variations under the guidance of Doug Adkins. The Unit will be anchored by a strong secondary group, and count on quality play from the LB positions. The defensive line will anchored by two returning defensive ends and looking among the talented group of true freshmen to round out the front.Defensive Line:Returning into his starting role at DE will be Tyler Palmer (Foothill H.S.) along with returning player William Zekas (Lassen H.S.). Newcomer who will be making strong contributions are; Jonathan Hope (Lakes H.S., WA), Jeremy Dixon (Edison H.S., Fresno CA), Chris Althof (Brookings H.S., OR), Oscar Ceballos (Marsing H.S., ID), Chris Ryken (Fort Bragg H.S.) and Fono Seiuli from San Francisco.Linebackers:The linebackers will be led by returning All-Conference selection 2010 Cody Lowe (Fort Bragg H.S), medical red-shirt Kai Lemrise (Del Norte H.S.), sophomore Josh Scarminach (Ashland H.S., OR). Newcomers bidding for playing time are Stephen Weisfield (Enterprise H.S.), Trevor Scott (Anderson H.S.), Austin Ashby (Lassen H.S.), Brent Lindsey (Lassen H.S.), Grant Lawrence (Vintage H.S., Napa, CA), Donnie Applegate (Fort Bragg H.S.), Nathan Wilfong (Kalama H.S., WA), Mathew Hornung (South Kitsap H.S., WA), William Chronis (Kalama H.S., WA)Secondary:The secondary is the one unit within the team that returns a solid group of veterans. Leading the group is Dimitrios Finney (David Douglas H.S., OR), Cole Sampson (Orland H.S.), Baruch Humble (Oakdale H.S., Oakdale, CA), Tanner Kuyper (Central Valley H.S.) and making the move from WR to DB is Mark Brooks (Klamath Union H.S., OR). Newcomers competing for playing time are Robert Edmondson (Fairfield, CA), Trevor Christenson (Reynolds H.S., OR), Paul Madden (Fife H.S., WA), Carlos Perea (Seward H.S., AK) and Mitchell Lopez (Red Bluff H.S.), Macloud Lutney (Burney H.S.) and Travis Whittaker (Scott Valley H.S.)Handling kicking duties for the Knights is Emmanuel Alcazar-Contreras from Anderson H.S.

Turnovers can be a crippling thing. Not the fumbles and interceptions, although those can be maddening in there own right. The topic here is personnel turnovers and when a team graduates and looses much of it roster it can be challenging to reload and rebuild. This is the case for the 2011 Knight’s. With basically a new team made up of only one player with playing experience on offense from the 2010 team, and four players who saw considerable action on the defensive side during last year’s campaign. This equates to one thing, the 2011 Knights are young, and are looking to fill the holes with quality newcomers. With the youthful makeup of this year’s team the Knights look forward to weekly growth and progress. There will be growing pains along the way, but the staff is very optimistic that this year’s team can grow and develop into a conference contender. The first five games will provide an excellent opportunity for the Knights to match up against some the top tier teams in Northern California and serve as an excellent measuring stick before entering conference play. The Knights also experienced turnovers within the coaching ranks. The 2011 staff is comprised of new coordinator’s on both sides of the ball. Taking on the role as offensive coordinator for the first time in his coaching career is head coach Craig Thompson. Returning to the staff after a two year departure is Doug Adkins who is back in the role as defensive coordinator which he held during his first tenure with Knight’s during the 2008 season. Matt Diskin has shifted from the defensive coordinator position to the special team’s coordinator and DL coach. Jesse Richard returns as the OL coach and also assumes the duties of run game coordinator. Ben Weaver is back for his third year as the receivers coach. Rounding out the offensive coaching staff is first year coach Chris Smith who will work with the running backs. Making the move from defensive backs coach to linebackers coach is Steve Campos. Mike Dobonye returns for his sixth season assisting with kickers and punters. Roger Hatton is beginning his fifteenth year as team manager. Offense:With changes to the offensive coaching staff come changes in philosophy and style. This year the Knights have made the switch and implemented a pistol – spread scheme. The pistol offense will provide the Knights to spread the field laterally with the purpose to push the ball vertically. The offense will be comprised of mostly newcomers who are

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Jody Nelson - Head CoachJody played soccer for numerous years, including participating on the first girl’s soccer team in Fresno when she was in 3rd grade. With most of the same girls, her club team later placed in the state championships. Many of these girls also played with Jody on the first girl’s team at Hoover High School, which was undefeated during her three years there. In 1981, Jody graduated from high school and attended Fresno State, where she participated in intramural, coed soccer. At the time, Fresno State did not have a Women’s Soccer Program. In 1986, Jody graduated from Fresno State, taught in Japan, traveled, and married. She is married to Randy Nelson, a Redding attorney, and they have three children, Kiely (20), Mitchell (18) and Christopher (17). After marrying, having children and moving to Redding in 1995, Jody reentered the soccer world as she joined the Redding Adult Soccer League and was a board member for about 5 years. She traveled for competitive coed and women’s tournaments. The Redding women were able to take first place in the Mendocino tournament a couple of years in a row. During this time she also coached her daughter’s soccer team and continued with many of the same girls for about six years, the last three at the Division III level. Although a knee injury has kept her out of competing in soccer for the last year and a half, Jody still tries to keep up with her players by bicycling and going to the gym. Jody is looking forward to her third season at Shasta College. She has enjoyed seeing a couple of her players move on to soccer programs in 4 year schools on scholarship and wants to help more of her players

WOMEN’S SOCCER OUTLOOK 2011

achieve that dream. She also wants to continue developing a program students will want to participate in. She hopes that the players learn that if they work hard, they will be a part of a competitive team and have lasting friendships and memories.

John Defalco - Assistant CoachJohn grew up in the Bay Area and learned soccer at migrant farm worker camps in the late 1960’s. He played in high school and college

The 2011 Shasta College Women’s Soccer team is, once again, going to be a small, but competitive group. Leading scorer, Amber Fiscus, as well as Golden Valley Conference first team player, Erica Hunting, will return and are expected to continue their stellar play. In addition, returners Audrey Kramm, Alette Romac, Tara Stouffer and Teresa Craig will help this team in competition with their comraderie and versatile abilities. 2010’s team was incredibly cohesive and these 6 players are looking to keep that tradition going with their leadership.

In addition to the returning players, we expect a big help from new players Allie Maxwell, Corinne Smith, Janelle Gaddy and Yui

Gabriele. They are all very talented players that can help out anywhere on the field. In defense we will see Vanya Hernandez, a returning player who took a year off and is welcomed back, and newcomers Cheyenne Martin and Kayla Bryan. At goal is the very aggressive Janell Grace, new to the SC soccer program. Also, Briana Miller, Vanya Hernandez and Corinne Smith are all quite able and willing to put on the goalie gear should the need arise. The key to the potential success of the 2011 Women’s Soccer team is the ability of so many players to be moved around to any position, depending on the situation, and an excellent overall fitness level. The Lady Knights will be very exciting to watch as they develop and compete as a team.
