Preparation • Hang little plastic (bags with handles) in your ‘fairy tree’ for the children to discover. Session Outline • Children spot fairy dust (flour) and follow the trail to the fairy door. Find lots of fairy skirts (Plastic bags) hanging in the tree. Find a fairy high up with a note. The note says the fairies have had to hang their skirts to dry because they got wet in the rain. Can the children help to dry the skirts by using them as kites? • Talk about kites and how they work. Do we need wind to fly a kite? Can we create our own wind to make the kite fly by running? How could we make the fairy skirts into kites to help them to dry? Can we tie some knots to attach string? How can we keep safe whilst flying our kites? • Make & play kites, help the children to tie string onto the handles to make their kite string where necessary. • Hang the dry skirts back up for the fairies afterwards. (Remember to remove them after the session!) Differentiation: HA- Tie own string and experiment with moving the kite in different ways. LA- Help with tying the string and prompts for flying. Extension: You could provide some alternative kites so the children can experience flying and handling different kinds. Ensure their are no power lines above. Tell children to look where they are going when running. Teaching Points When something is in the air, gravity pulls it back down to the ground. So what keeps a kite up? Wind! Wind creates lift. Lift is what happens when wind pushes against something and carries it up. Dear Children,

We, The Outdoor Fairies, like to play in your outdoor area at night time.

Last night it rained and we had to hang our Fairy Skirts up in the tree to dry.Can you help us to dry our skirts by making them into kites and flying them in the wind?Tonight, when we come to play again, we will look forward to receiving our dry skirts back.
