bottom line through substantial cost and time saving opportunities. Our entire system is designed to minimize chances for unevenness, shadowing and color depth inconsistencies, while never compromising the gloss or durability of the final finish.

Hatteras Yachts Launches New GT Series with Custom ALEXSEAL®

One of the world’s leading builders of luxurious convertibles and motor yachts for more than 50 years has brought their fleet to new heights with the recent launch of the new Hatteras GT Series. This performance series is comprised of three models: the

new GT54, the redesigned GT60, and the new GT63. First off the line, the Hatteras GT60 is painted in a custom ALEXSEAL® gray and will make its debut at the 2010 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

Hatteras has painted their yachts with the revolutionary ALEXSEAL® coatings system since 2006. ALEXSEAL is an ideal match for their commitment to producing high quality yachts because it delivers a composite

finish that is tough to scratch, yet easy to repair. Our special combination of resins provide the most lustrous finish, retain gloss better and offers higher resistance to chemical attack and abrasion.

Hatteras’ mission to continuously elevate the art of boat building led them to choose ALEXSEAL® to finish their exciting new GT Series. This family of tournament-class convertibles comes to market with best-in-class performance, unforgettable styling, and a rock-solid hull personalized with ALEXSEAL’s extensive range of standard and custom color options.

Gunboat Sees Great Success with ALEXSEAL®

Gunboat founder, Peter Johnstone, is passionate about crossing oceans and exploring remote cruising grounds in fast, well found sailing yachts. Built to sail far beyond the often treacherous South African waters from which they are launched, Gunboat mega-cats use proven ocean racing technology to create the ultimate long range cruising boat.

After cruising with his family for 18 months aboard his 62, Johnstone identified exactly what was needed to experience the most out of extended bluewater cruising. Johnstone returned with refinements that

eventually led him to build the recently launched 66’ Gazelle, completed with the ALEXSEAL® metallic system.

ALEXSEAL’s balance of durability and repairability was exactly what Johnstone was looking for in his mission to redefine performance cruising. Johnstone stated that ALEXSEAL® offers, “the absolute best metallic paints available today. Your metallics go on more consistently, and last longer. Our experience with the products and service was excellent. I greatly appreciate our ALEXSEAL® representative checking application conditions and

preparation, and standing behind the product.” The Gunboat 66 is a bold and stable performer from her high aspect sail plan all the way down to the sharp ALEXSEAL® metallic finish.

For 140 years, Cheoy Lee has made everything from ferries and tugboats to sprawling superyachts. Their long-sighted strategies and limitless abilities allow them to stay at the forefront of the industry, and ALEXSEAL® is honored to join them here.

Similar to ALEXSEAL®, Icon is a fairly new company in the superyacht arena, and together we are progressively influencing the marine industry with innovative technology and high quality products. Our unique metallic system incorporates aluminum and pearlescent pigmentation and offers excellent coverage, uniformity, ease of application and “severe wear” features that cannot be found with competing products. Just like Icon, ALEXSEAL® offers discerning yacht owners a luxurious alternative, backed by a team of specialists enthusiastic about our products.

Icon Yachts Partners with ALEXSEAL® for Their Largest Metallic Application

Icon Yachts was founded in 2005 with the motive to build ultimate luxury yachts to the exacting demands of their owners. Dedicated to building yachts based on a predetermined technical platform of the

highest quality and standards, Icon has made a name for itself with just three builds under their belt. Considered a “Co-maker” by Icon, ALEXSEAL® and fellow OEMs are involved from the outset to ensure all share a unified vision of the final product.

After ALEXSEAL’s revolutionary metallic coatings on Icon #1 proved to better meet the priorities of their discriminating owners, while also providing a consistent, yet adaptable system for their applicators, ALEXSEAL® was also selected as the coatings solution provider for the latest launch, Baton Rouge.

M/Y Solemar: An Unrivaled Encounter with LuxuryMaster Dutch shipbuilders since 1918, AMELS emerged in 1982 as a global brand leader in yacht building. AMELS has launched more than 30 superb custom yachts, universally admired for their flawless quality, including the world-renowned and award winning 201’ (61m) charter yacht Solemar. Because Solemar features exceptionally innovative ideas it was a privilege for ALEXSEAL® to be selected as her coatings solution during her recent refit at ACA Marine in Marseille, France.

Opulent and prestigious, Solemar effortlessly combines innovation, luxury and sumptuous style, which is now transcended through her well-appointed ALEXSEAL® finish. Solemar’s ambience

is elegant yet relaxed, emphasizing exceptional quality in every detail of her finish. Her eye-catching beauty has already succeeded in winning her the ShowBoats Award for Best Interior 2004, while she was also chosen to grace the front cover of the authoritative Superyachts Book Vol. 17.

Without question, Solemar raised the standard in all aspects of her build, design and performance, just as ALEXSEAL® has done by incorporating the latest technology, physical characteristics & environmental compliance, to achieve the finest yacht paint in the world.

Cheoy Lee launched their Bravo Series with the 78 motoryacht, a poised performer and an excellent example of the value and quality that have distinguished their yachts for nearly 60 years. Their history dates back to a humble beginning in 1870 as a building and repair yard for steam-powered craft in Shanghai. Run by the same family ever since, Cheoy Lee is resourceful, colorful, ingenious, and committed to time-honored traditions of excellence. These shared traits at ALEXSEAL® made their partnering for the coatings on the Bravo Series, among other custom Cheoy Lee vessels, a natural progression.

Most of the 78’s fiberglass parts, including her hull and superstructure, are built using a process in which resin is infused into the laminate in a vacuum. This makes it possible to create parts with near-perfect resin-to-glass ratios. It also reduces weight and waste and leads to a more consistent result. Similarly, ALEXSEAL’s high-performance coatings reduce the film thickness which simplifies the drying process and provides significant weight reductions - resulting in substantial cost and time savings, as well as decreases in waste and energy consumptions.

Global Solutions for an Ever-Evolving Marketplace

Continued from Page 1

environmental regulations of the global market - both current and future. The selection of raw materials found in ALEXSEAL® formulas is based on analyses of long-term availability and environmental compliance. The ALEXSEAL® labs anticipated future regulations when developing the product line and have not had to undergo complicated formulation changes to comply with global regulations. When ALEXSEAL® hit the market in 2002, it was the most significant leap ahead in 30 years, and our team of over 120 forward-thinking chemists continues to ensure ALEXSEAL® maintains its lead as the most innovative global coatings solution.

Despite the changing market landscape, ALEXSEAL® has always delivered superior performance compared to older, more established brands. The ALEXSEAL® team started with Mankiewicz’s proven ability to match innovative formulations with varying industrial needs in order to protect and beautify a wide range of applications. Our chemists tailored these formulas for marine use by incorporating recent advances in resin technology with their aviation systems developments - which demand both exceedingly durable coatings and stringent safety and environmental compliance.

The type of resins used in ALEXSEAL’s aliphatic polyester polyurethane weren’t available when competing marine coatings were born. In fact, many ingredients used by older brands have been banned for environmental reasons. As a result, competing brands are following ALEXSEAL’s lead as they are forced to change their formulas to

implement more modern chemistry. In anticipation of this, Mankiewicz developed proven products that for more than a decade now have provided yacht owners with the best technology available and outpaced our competition that are just getting started.

Even if our break-through formula were to find its way into competitors’ hands, they would still not be able to duplicate the ALEXSEAL® product because the manufacturing process is as equally important as the selection of raw materials. In short, ALEXSEAL® is not just a proprietary formula; it is also a proprietary manufacturing process.

The Right Way to DryThe Mankiewicz coatings experts utilized their deep understanding of the strengths and limitations of paint to create ALEXSEAL’s proprietary formula that, among other attributes, offers a more ideal drying time for various yacht production environments

while providing a drying time with good “wet edge” characteristics and an ideal flow over the large areas of even the most grand superyachts.

The ALEXSEAL® system – the resin, pigment and solvent – is designed so that every measured

component has more time to work together. Other paints can flash off too quickly to achieve an ideal flow out. ALEXSEAL’s system-matched flow enhancers allow the applicator to tweak the mix for working in extremes of heat, cold and humidity. All coatings generally require the applicator to make a mixture of paint and additives. ALEXSEAL’s

simple formula not only decreases cost and effort, it provides applicators with uncomplicated mix ratios that do not compromise the gloss, depth, durability and efficient application of the final finish. Designed from a practical point of view by technical specialists who understand everything involved with fairing and painting, the ALEXSEAL® system optimizes the paint process.

Performance with a ConscienceThe Alexseal® system is comprised of high quality components that offer the greatest possible environmental compatibility during all phases of their life cycle. Our sensitive approach to ecological issues is evident in our selection criteria for raw material suppliers and their handling of these issues. Heavy preference is given to suppliers that are ISO 14001 certified, and we regularly have our company audited for ISO compliance.

Within the last ten years, we have introduced water-dilutable coatings. One of our objectives is to offer a water-dilutable alternative for our interior product range, while complying with specifications and requirements dictated by the surfaces. Use of water-dilutable products drastically reduces solvent emissions, lessening the risks of fire and explosion and reducing environmental pollutants.

Another factory objective is the development of products that utilize fewer coats and thinner film densities,

ALEXSEAL® Waterborne Topcoat is a water reducible, two component polyurethane developed for the demanding needs of the global marine market. This highly durable product has been formulated into an innovative marine specific interior coating using ALEXSEAL’s proprietary, state-of-the-art polyurethane technology.

ALEXSEAL® Waterborne Topcoat provides the builder and applicator with the desired performance characteristics of a solvent-borne paint, without the odor, flammability and other negative characteristics that would inhibit applying a highly durable product in an enclosed environment. Lower VOC’s and solvent emissions provide the green alternative you have been looking for; plus the fastest drying time in its class saves precious time and money, and gets you on the water faster.

The finished product equally impresses with its high gloss and durable surface, even under the marine environment’s harsh conditions. Resistance to abrasion, chipping, solvents, chemicals, synthetic cooling agents and hydraulic oils makes ALEXSEAL® Waterborne Topcoat’s interior application ideal for engine rooms and lockers, as well as other interior surfaces where a waterborne product is desired.

Introducing ALEXSEAL® Waterborne Topcoat

not only requiring less material and energy consumption during application, but resulting in considerable weight reductions. We consider it our duty to provide our customers with both the highest performing coatings products and the most environmentally friendly products.

Steadfast SupportPerhaps the best reason to choose ALEXSEAL® for your yacht is the service our business model offers. Our team doesn’t punch a clock. We are in the yards and on the docks - ready to solve any technical challenges. We are in the lab and on the loading dock to ensure your shipment goes out on time, as ordered. When you, your captain or your service manager calls ALEXSEAL, an experienced coatings pro with a

genuine concern for the success of your yacht’s finish is there for you. To meet the increasing demand for our market responsive product line, we have more than doubled the number of dedicated professionals in our global yacht support team over the last five years and have established an easily accessible global network of product distributors.

Moving ForwardALEXSEAL’s recent introduction of a new metal parts primer that speeds up the application process is another example of how providing substantial cost and time saving solutions has helped us secure a leading industry position in a relatively short time. Our new metallic formulation which provides a more durable finish than previously

available from our competitors; our custom colors that allow owners to express their individuality; and the expanded color selections for our standard polyester polyurethane topcoat ALEXSEAL® Topcoat 501 are further demonstrations of our swift responsiveness to the market’s growing demand for our durable and repairable products.

Mankiewicz’s continued dedication to delivering superior and environmentally conscious product advancements through constant investments into our formulas, facilities and people demonstrates our commitment to remain one of the leading global coatings providers in the yacht market for many generations to come.

ALEXSEAL® U.S. Operations Move to South CarolinaIn August ALEXSEAL® moved U.S. operations from St. Louis, Missouri to Charleston, South Carolina. Mankiewicz invested in renovating an existing 24,000 sq. ft. building, which has given rise to a state-of-the art lab, production, technical training and warehouse facility, as well as new employment opportunities for the local community.

This move provides faster access to ALEXSEAL® shipments from Germany through the Charleston port of entry, decreased delay for West Coast shipments

via direct access to the southern trucking routes, closer proximity to the hub of their U.S. customer base, and better resources for their employees. The new location, which Mankiewicz will also use to serve the U.S. aviation, automotive, medical and industrial markets, features a climate-controlled environment for all product stages from the lab to production to storage - helping to ensure their products maintain their superior, world renowned attributes. In addition, the efficiency of consolidating all operations from research and development to production, storage and shipping, as well

as customer training and support, will allow the company to reduce lead times, and continue to provide exceptional products at extremely competitive prices.

“We have had a presence in Simpsonville, South Carolina for nearly 15 years and are excited to be able to expand our U.S. operations in this region. By expanding in South Carolina, we will strengthen our North American market presence and operate in a strong and business-friendly environment,” said Michael Grau, President and CEO of Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co.
