Faculty NEWSJAMES BARNES, professor emeritus of music theory & music composition, returned from a month-long conducting tour of Japan.

of American studies; Michelle Heffner Hayes, professor of dance; and Elizabeth Boresow, music therapist, presented their AUMI-KU InterArts research projects involving the adaptive use of musical instruments (AUMI) at the Improvisation and Community Health Consortium in Montreal, Canada on June 14.

MARIANA FARAH, associate director of choral activities, served as the guest conductor for the Kantorei Summer

Choral Institute Choristers in June. The ensemble was composed of 45 high school singers from Missouri and Kansas. The group rehearsed daily and performed a concert at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City on June 29.

Farah also taught a week-long conducting course in August at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in Campinas, Brazil. The course involved 46 undergraduate and graduate students from major universities in the state of São Paulo. The students performed a final recital on August 7.

MICHAEL KIRKENDOLL, assistant professor of piano, concluded his first year on the faculty of the KU School of Music by spending two weeks in Italy as the director of the 2015 Cortona Sessions for New Music. Kirkendoll founded the Cortona Sessions in 2010, and it has since become one of the world’s premiere educational

programs dedicated to the creation and performance of contemporary music, producing nearly 400 world premiere performances. In addition to directing, coordinating, teaching, and lecturing at the Sessions, Kirkendoll also collaborated with other Sessions faculty for the world premiere of Bird Songs by Chicago-based composer David Reminick, performed additional contemporary ensemble pieces, and gave a solo recital featuring two 35-minute pieces for speaking pianist by the Cortona Sessions Guest Composer-in-Residence Frederic Rzewski. PAUL LAIRD, professor of musicology, taught a course for the first Master of Musicology program in Ecuador, offered by the Universidad de Cuenca. Laird was in residence in Cuenca for the class from May 19 to 25, and then continued to advise students electronically and grade papers in June and July.

In addition, Laird presented a paper entitled “The Dance Music in West Side Story in Composition and Orchestration: Lenny’s Perpetual Presence” at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Meeting in Montreal between July 30 and August 2. The paper concerned Bernstein’s authorial presence in the orchestrations of West Side Story, as seen in drafts of the orchestrations available at the Sid Ramin Papers in the Columbia University Archive.

Laird’s latest book appeared this summer: the second edition of Leonard Bernstein: A Research and Information Guide (New York and London: Rutledge, 2015). Laird prepared the second edition with co-author Hsun Lin, who holds a PhD in Musicology from the University of Kansas (2013), where she wrote a dissertation concerning

DEANNA HANSON-ABROMEIT, assistant professor of music education & music therapy, was an invited panelist at the American Music Therapy Association Research 2025 Symposium in Baltimore, Maryland, July 16-18. Hanson-Abromeit presented Building Research Capacity: Education and Training, with an emphasis on preparing students for the

future of clinical practice and research in music therapy by integrating research concepts into the curriculum of music therapy courses. This symposium identified profession-specific research needs, policy imperatives, and considerations for future research for selected clinical topics (autism spectrum disorder, Alzheimer’s and related dementia, and acquired brain injury), as well as building research infrastructure capacity. Participants were organized into breakout groups to discuss topics and make actionable recommendations to improve the access and quality of music therapy research over the next 10 years.

Additionally, Hanson-Abromeit presented a workshop on competency-based supervision to faculty and clinical supervisors at Cleveland State University on August 15. This workshop introduced competency-based supervision being developed and utilized in other clinical health professions and shared an emerging model of competency-based supervision and evaluation being developed at KU. Hanson-Abromeit facilitated the application and modification of competency-based supervision concepts to current supervision observation reports used at Cleveland State.

JEFF HARSHBARGER, lecturer in jazz studies, was the recipient of the Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Award. The award aims to “recognize and meaningfully support artists producing exceptional performance-based work that is original, innovative and contemporary” and includes an unrestricted cash prize of $10,000.

Harshbarger also performed and taught at several workshops throughout the country, including the KU Jazz Workshop, the Kansas City Bass Workshop, and the Twin Cities Bass Workshop, where he performed and recorded with virtuoso bassist/composer Francois Rabbath.

Bernstein’s theater music, with Laird as her advisor. Leonard Bernstein: A Research and Information Guide is designed to assist those performing research on Bernstein with a brief biography, an essay on his compositional style, an annotated list of his compositions, and hundreds of annotations on Bernstein’s writings and sources about his life and music.

FORREST PIERCE, associate professor of music composition, premiered his saxophone quartet, The Kansas Rapture, by the h2 quartet at the World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg, France on July 13. He also premiered at the Congress his new two-saxophone arrangement of O My Dove.

Canticle Variations, Pierce’s nine-movement song cycle for mezzo-soprano and violin, was premiered at the Cortona Sessions for New Music on July 9 in Tuscany. The work was commissioned by Rachel Calloway and Ari Streisfeld. Pierce once again served as composition faculty for the Sessions, which draws composers and contemporary music specialists from around the world.

PAUL POPIEL, director of bands, completed editing of several upcoming commercial CDs, including two KU Chamber Winds pieces by Warren Benson, for the Naxos Wind Band Classics label, and a disc for the University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble, with works by composers James Oliverio, Ignolf Dahl, and David Amram.

COLIN ROUST, assistant professor of musicology, gave conference presentations on music history pedagogy at both the International Musicological Society Congress and the Teaching Music History Conference, for which he was also an organizer. He also read a paper on the collaborative aesthetic of

Georges Auric at the International Conference on Music, Intertextuality, and Inter-Art Forms at the National University of Ireland in Maynooth.

In addition, he undertook a three-week trip to France to work on his book, The Music and Politics of Georges Auric, and a CD project, The Complete Piano Works of Georges

Auric. In the course of the trip he conducted research in Paris, Chenonceaux, Nice, Villefranche-sur-mer, and Hyères.

SCOTT WATSON, professor of tuba/euphonium, and PAUL STEVENS, associate professor of horn, recently performed on the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society 2015 season this August, presenting two concerts with their group, the Infiniti Brass. The group’s concerts at both the historic Old Whaling Church in Edgartown, MA and the Chilmark Community Center in Chilmark, MA consisted of works by Farnaby, Forsyth, Ewald, and Bernstein, as well as solos by members of the ensemble with KU alumna and series founder Delores Stevens on piano.

After concertizing on Martha’s Vineyard the group traveled to Cape Cod, presenting two concerts in Hyannis, MA, including a chamber recital in the historic St. Andrews Church by the Sea, adjacent to the Kennedy Family Compound.

KETTY WONG, associate professor of ethnomusicology, presented a paper entitled “Salsa Dancing with ‘Chinese Characteristics’: In Search of Cosmopolitan Identity Markers” at the Latin American Studies Association Conference, which took place May 27-30 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. June 24-26, she was invited to share her research experiences

in China at the Fulbright Pre-Departure Orientation for new Fulbright senior scholars in Washington, D. C. In addition, she wrote a substantial entry on Ecuadorian art and traditional and popular music for the musical encyclopedia Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart.

Student NEWSRAFFAELE CIPRIANO, DMA student in orchestral conducting, was vocal coach and music conductor for the opera Prima la musica, poi le parole by Antonio Salieri, at the International Chamber Music Festival in Lapedona,

Italy. The orchestra, leaded by the international violinist Walter Daga, performed a reduction of the original score, arranged by Cipriano. The staging was realized by the Venetian director Marco Bellussi. Cipriano is a student of David Neely, Director of Orchestral Activities.

NATHAN JONES, a DMA composition student, had his choral work I would live in your love performed in New York City on June 27, as one of the nine finalists of the ORTUS International New Music Competition. Through a voting process by both the live audience

and those around the world watching an online stream, his piece was selected as the overall winner. Also, his song cycle for mezzo-soprano, Six Qabbani Love Songs, was selected as a semi-finalist for the American Prize, Chamber Music Composition division. Finalists and winners will be announced later this fall. You can watch the world premiere of this song cycle on Nathan’s YouTube channel here.

KRISTIN NEWBEGIN, DMA candidate, was an Apprentice Artist at Des Moines Opera.

ANDY NEWBEGIN, DMA, trombone ‘16, will join the faculty at Kansas Wesleyan University this fall, teaching low brass and jazz band.

MACKENZIE PHILLIPS, DMA candidate in voice, sang at Brevard Music Center.

GEOFFREY WILCKEN, DMA composition student, was named the winner of the inaugural Kansas Choral Composition Prize. Administered by the Wichita Chamber Chorale, the Prize carries a monetary award, as

well as a performance of the winning work.

Nine KU School of Music students and one alumna (pictured below with KU faculty and alumni) were Fellows at the 2015 Cortona Sessions

for New Music in Cortona, Italy. The students included: percussionists Alex Betsold, Kanako Chikami, Matthew Ernster, and Fofo Tsai; bassoonist Grant Bingham; cellist Audrey Herren; saxophonists Dave Berrios and Robbie Harvey; and pianists Wen-Ting Ong and Jack Yarbrough. Over the course of two weeks, the students worked with leading young composers from around the world and were part of ensembles that gave over 50 world premiere performances. In addition, they studied with a faculty of contemporary music specialists that included KU School of Music faculty members Forrest Pierce, composition, and Michael Kirkendoll, piano, KU School of Music Alumni including Mary Fukushima, flute, Amir Khosrowpour, piano, and Jake Wallace, composition, as well as former KU School of Music assistant professor of percussion, Ji Hye Jung.

Alumni NEWS JENNIFER J. ANTONETTI, BME ’07 and MME ‘13 recently received the Most Outstanding Young Band Director Award from the Kansas Bandmasters Association.

DONALD L. APPERT, DMA ‘85, recently guest conducted the Orchestra Sinfonica Citta di Grosseto in Italy in a concert that included his Piano Concerto in Mi, commissioned by soloist Maurizio Barboro. The same work will be on

his upcoming 25th Anniversary season finale, with the Clark College Orchestra and Renato Fabbro giving the US Premiere. In November 2014 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in the Arts by the Clark County (WA) Arts Commission. He conducted the Academy of Soloists Kazahkstan in Massa, Italy in a concert including his own Nara Variations for string orchestra in July. In December he will be conducting the Oradea Philharmonic in Romania in a program that includes his Northwest Triptych.

Appert has also been selected as a semi-finalist in the Composer 2015 Orchestra, professional division of the American Prize national no-profit competitions in the performing arts for his Fantasy for Contrabass and String Orchestra, which was premiered by Bill Athens and the Oregon Sinfonietta in November of 2014.

AMY C. BEAL, BM in piano performance ‘90; MM in piano performance ‘92, went on to earn a PhD in historical musicology from the University of Michigan in 1999. Now teaching music history and

contemporary music performance practice at the University of California, Santa Cruz, she recently completed a three-year term as Chair of the Music Department. She is the author of three books on twentieth-century American music.

ETTA FUNG, DMA ‘15, KATIE BIEBER, MM ‘14, JESSICA WAGNER, MM candidate and KATIE MEYER, BM ‘15, sang with the National Music Festival in Maryland this summer.

JEFFREY RICHARD CARTER, DMA ‘00, received the 2015 Saint Louis Theatre Critics Circle Award for Best Musical Director. He continues as Chair of the Department of Music at Webster University in Saint Louis, where he has reached the rank of professor. His vocal work Storypeople Songs received a world premiere in April. Carter blogs about

teaching voice lessons at musicatwebster.wordpress.com; and his website is jeffreycarter.us.

KATHRYN POTTER CRASK, Fine Arts & Education ’79, recently joined the Tulare County Symphony Orchestra. She retired in 2013 after many years of teaching orchestra in the public and private sectors.

TARA CURTIS, DMA ‘14, sang with the Merola program - San Francisco Opera.

SARAH MILLER, DMA ‘15, was appointed trombone professor and assistant director of bands at Washington State University and has been appointed principal trombonist of the Washington-Idaho Symphony.

DR. SHELLEY (ARCHAMBO) WIEST, M.Phil. ‘83, PhD ‘84, along with her husband Paul D. Wiest, owns a very successful harp dealership called HarpsArizona.com in Phoenix, Arizona. Shelley and Paul sell,

rent, consign, and buy harps of all sizes and are one of only a few dealers for Lyon & Healy Harps (Chicago, IL) and Dusty Strings Harps (Seattle, WA). Paul retired from his job in the business world 9 years ago and Shelley retired from teaching 4 years ago, and they are busier than ever with their harp dealership.

RYAN WOODHOUSE, DMA in composition ‘12, was named Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Texas A&M University—Corpus Christi.
