JULY/AUGUST 2014 Faculty NEWS NEW FACULTY KU School of Music welcomes two new faculty members in 2014 - Michael Kirkendoll, Professor of Piano and Colin Roust, Professor of Musicology. KU alumnus MICHAEL KIRKENDOLL joins the Piano faculty at KU aſter an appointment at Oklahoma State University. He earned Doctoral and Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Kansas, and a Masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music. In 2010, Kirkendoll founded the Cortona Sessions for New Music. e Cortona Sessions - held in Cortona, Italy - offer young performers and composers from around the world two weeks of focused study, performance, and collaboration with a faculty of esteemed contemporary music specialists. In addition to collaborative performances with the Cortona Collective, he performs regularly as part of DuoSolo with his wife, flutist Mary Fukushima. In 2008, they formed the DuoSolo Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization to support the commissioning, performance, recording, education, and promotion of contemporary music. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, with specializations in twentieth-century music and film music, and his areas of research interest include the French composer Georges Auric, music history pedagogy, music and politics, and the intersection of music and the other arts in multimedia genres. Faculty NEWS NEW FACULTY KU School of Music welcomes two new faculty members in 2014 - Michael Kirkendoll, Professor of Piano and Colin Roust, Professor of Musicology.

KU alumnus MiChAEL KirKENdoLL joins the Piano faculty at KU after an appointment at Oklahoma State University.

He earned Doctoral and Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Kansas, and a Masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music. In 2010, Kirkendoll founded the Cortona Sessions for New Music. dEANNA hANSoN-ABroMEiT, Professor of Music Education & Music Therapy, together with music therapy and cognitive neuroscience colleagues from Australia and the UK, planned the inaugural meeting of the Music and Neurodevelopmentally At-Risk Infant (MANDARI) Research and Practice Group in London on July 1-3. This

international, interdisciplinary collaboration was organized to discuss integrated capacity for high-impact research and clinical application of music for greater efficacy with infants who are neuro-developmentally at risk. Read the KU News story.Following the MANDARI meeting, Hanson-Abromeit traveled to Krems, Austria to present at the 14th World Congress of Music Therapy (July 7-12). She was one of two panelists representing the U.S. in the roundtable presentation, “Culturally Transformed Music Therapy in the Perinatal and Paediatric NICU.” Hanson-Abromeit also presented “A Theory-based Conceptual Framework for Music-based Interventions with Premature Infants” with Helen Shoemark (Murdoch Childrens Research Institute & The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, Australia).Additionally, she received a New Faculty General Research Fund grant in June 2014 to partially support the research project, “Emergence of a Conceptual Framework for Music-Based Intervention with Medically Fragile Infants Hospitalized in the NICU: A Systematic Review.” The purpose of this project is to conduct a configurative systematic review to determine the existing patterns and trends related to music-based stimuli with medically fragile infants hospitalized in the NICU.

dEBrA hEddEN, Professor and Director of Music Education, presented three conference sessions at the invitation of the Iowa Choral Directors Association in Mason City, IA, July 23-25. The sessions included: “What Research Tells about Teaching Children to Sing,” a synthesis of research that provides implications

for teaching; “Threading the Concept: Connected Learning for All Students,” a pedagogical approach to teaching one concept through singing, moving, listening, reading/writing, performing, and creating to concentrate learning; and “Classroom Management: Are You a Leader or a Follower?” an approach for the classroom that is predicated on leadership attitudes and behaviors.

CYNThiA CoLWELL, Professor of Music Education & Music Therapy, and Director of Music Therapy, recently published an article in the International Journal of Music Education that looked at what happened when music students were asked to simulate a disability. Colwell’s study found that music students’ attitudes toward individuals

with disabilities were more positive after they simulated having a disability. Read the full KU News story.

Soprano JULiA BroxhoLM, Professor of Voice, MArgArET MArCo (oboe/

English horn), Professor of Oboe, and EriC SToMBErg (bassoon), Professor of Bassoon, performed at the International Double Reed Society Conference (Aug. 5-9) at NYU Steinhardt on Aug. 8. The program consisted entirely of selections from Bach Cantatas for oboe, English horn and soprano.

Six members of the School of Music Vocal/Choral Pedagogy Research Group - including JAMES dAUghErTY, Professor of Choral/Vocal Pedagogy - were selected for podium research presentations at this year’s International Voice Foundation Symposium May 28 - June 1 in Philadelphia, PA. The student members

also selected for podium research at the conference are: MELiSSA grAdY, Ph.D. candidate in choral pedagogy; hEAThEr NELSoN, Ph.D. candidate in vocal pedagogy; AMELiA roLLiNgS, Ph.D. student in vocal pedagogy; MATThEW SChLoNEgEr, Ph.D. candidate in vocal pedagogy; and STEvE SCoTT, Ph.D. student in vocal pedagogy.

MAriANA FArAh, Associate Director of KU Choral Activities, served as Choral Conductor and Choral Conducting Professor at the 34º Festival de Música de Londrina, in Paraná, Brazil. The festival took place in Londrina, Paraná July 6-19 and involved 839 students from across Brazil and abroad. The Festival

included 60 concerts in total and garnered an audience of around 20,000 people for the entire event. Farah prepared Vivaldi’s Gloria, RV 589, with the festival choir.

STEvE LEiSriNg, Professor of Trumpet, traveled throughout China in June, performing and teaching at the following conservatories and universities: The Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing; Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu; XiAn Conservatory; Shanghai Conservatory; and Southwest

University in Chongqing. Additionally, he was an invited clinician of the Kunming Symphony Orchestra. While there, Leisring gave a recital with his wife, Dr. Paulina Wu Leisring (piano) in the Kunming Theater, sponsored by the US-China Cultural Educational Foundation. In July, Leisring performed as special guest soloist with KU Jazz Ensemble I, led by Dan Gailey, Director of Jazz Studies, and special guest Deborah Brown at the tour kick-off concert at the Lied Center of KS (July 3) and on the Ensemble’s 11-day European tour, which included stops in Switzerland, France and Germany. D.M.A. in trumpet performance candidates Clint Ashlock and Erik Mahon, and B.M. in trumpet performance student Michael Raehpour also appeared as soloists on the tour.

SCoTT MUrPhY, Professor of Music Theory, presented research entitled “Using Discrete Calculus to Correlate a Sinusoidal Model of Meter with Normative Rhythms and Structural Accents” at the 13th International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, held jointly with the 5th Conference of the Asia-Pacific

Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music, in Seoul, South Korea on August 7. This research reveals a close relationship between the change of metrical state and the possibility of a rhythmic onset in common-practice music.

In July, PAUL W. PoPiEL, Director of Bands, presented a paper at the International Society for the Research and Promotion of Wind Music (IGEB) biennial conference in Hammelburg, Germany entitled “The Harsh and Haunting Winds of 9/11 - A Conductor’s Insight into In the Shadow of No Towers: Symphony #4 (2012) by Mohammed Fairouz."

dENA rEgiSTEr, Professor of Music Education & Music Therapy, spoke at the World Congress for Music Therapy in Krems, Austria. The international conference was held July 8-12 and was a gathering of more than 1,000 music therapy professionals and students from 44 different countries. This conference offered an opportunity

for Register to connect with students and staff from Mahidol University College of Music, Music Therapy program in Bangkok, Thailand, a KU partner institution.

MATThEW SMiTh, Associate Director of Bands, presented at the conference for the International Society for the Research and Promotion of Wind Music (IGEB) in Hammelburg, Germany in July. His discussion on “The Paul E. Bierley Band Record Collection at the University of Kansas: A Closer Look” included examples of

rare musical recordings held in the University of Kansas Sound Archive.

KETTY WoNg, Professor of Ethnomusicology, was inducted into Ecuador’s National Academy of History on July 16 with a speech entitled “Reflections on the Study of Musical Nationalism in Ecuador.” This summer, she also received a plaque in recognition of her professional achievements as a music scholar from

the Chinese Colony of Ecuador and the Consulate of the People’s Republic of China in Guayaquil.

Student NEWSAMELiA roLLiNgS, Ph.D. student in vocal pedagogy, was invited by The Voice Foundation to present her research for the New Investigator Research Forum during the Foundation's Annual Symposium, May 28 - June 1 in Philadelphia, PA. Each year the Foundation selects two studies among an international

pool of submissions for this honor. This marks the second consecutive year that a KU student has been among this

select group of honorees. MATThEW SChLoNEgEr, Ph.D. candidate in vocal pedagogy, was selected for the 2013 Forum.

KU students won First and Second Prizes at the 29th Annual International Young Artist Piano Competition held June 26-29 at Catholic University in Washington, DC. KriS MiChAELS, D.M.A. student in piano performance, took First Prize in the Young Professional division. Chi-KiT LAM, D.M.A. student in piano performance, took Second Prize. Both are students of Jack Winerock, Professor of Piano. As a result of the win, Michaels was invited to perform at the Winner’s Concert held Aug. 12 at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. MATT SChLoNEgEr, Ph.D. student in vocal pedagogy, won the Best Research Poster Award at the 53rd Annual National Teachers of Singing Conference in Boston, MA held July 5-9, 2014. The winning poster entitled “Testing a New Method in Voice Dosimetry Utilizing an Unfiltered Accelerometer Signal: Protocols and

Preliminary Data” was co-authored by Eric Hunter from the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Michigan State University and the National Center for Voice & Speech.

In early July, KU JAzz ENSEMBLE I played eight shows in 11 days, with dates in France, Germany and Switzerland, including appearances by invitation at two of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals —

the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Jazz À Vienne Festival. The ensemble and its director, Dan Gailey, were joined on all performances by two special guests - celebrated Kansas City-based jazz vocalist Deborah Brown and Steve Leisring, KU Professor of Trumpet.After a tour kick-off concert at the Lied Center on July 3, the group flew to Zurich, Switzerland. They played four shows from July 5 to 8: the Brienz Jazz Festival in Brienz, Switzerland; two shows at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland, and the Jazz À Vienne Festival in Vienne, France. The tour concluded with three dates in Germany, in Timmendorfer Strand and Hohenlockstedt. The final show took place in Eutin, Germany — one of Lawrence’s sister cities — at the Eutin Festival (Eutiner Festpiele). Read the full story.

Alumni NEWS EThAN BArTLEY, B.M. in trumpet performance ‘14, and MASoN TYLEr, D.M.A. in trumpet performance student, performed with the Kansas City Symphony and Music Director Michael Stern in Verdi’s Requiem in Helzberg Hall, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in June.

ALBErT MiLLEr, D.M.A in euphonium performance ‘14, was named Director of Jazz and Low Brass at Kansas Wesleyan University (Salina, KS), as well as Assistant Director of Bands at Free State High School in Lawrence, KS.

AAroN PErgrAM, B.M. in bassoon performance ‘06, was recently named Assistant Professor of Bassoon at Soochow University in Suzhou, Jiangsu, in the People’s Republic of China. His tenure-track position at this prominent Shanghai metropolitan-area university includes both applied and research-based responsibilities. Pergram holds additional degrees in bassoon performance, including a M.M. from Indiana University and a D.M.A. from the University of Oregon. He also refined his Chinese studies at Beijing Normal University.

LAUrA PoTTEr, D.M.A. in tuba performance ‘13, was named Visiting Professor of Band and Brass at Dickinson State University (Dickinson, SD).

TrAviS SiEhNdEL, B.M. in tuba performance ‘99, is now a member of the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, DC. Siehndel has been a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Band in Annapolis for the past decade.

MASoN TYLEr, D.M.A. candidate in trumpet performance, was appointed Principal Trumpet in the Des Moines Metro Opera for Summer 2014.
