Harshbarger also led Sonic Spectrum’s Tribute to Miles Davis at the Record Bar in Kansas City, MO on Feb 23. Works included selections from Davis’ 60’s quintet, as well as a note-for-note performance of the legendary album Kind of Blue. Performers included Clint Ashlock, Steve Lambert, Ryan Lee, TJ Martley, Hermon Mehari, Andrew Ouellette, Michael Shults, Brian Steever and Rich Wheeler. Faculty NEWS Soprano JULIA BROXHOLM, Associate Professor of Voice, performed at a concert featuring the works of American

professionals. Charles is Senior House Manager and Volunteer Coordinator at the Lied Center and a student of Julia Broxholm, Associate Professor of Voice.

B.M.E. students eRIN fUNK, oboe, STePHeN MeILLeR, horn, feRN STeVeRMeR, trombone, and AMBeR THOeNNeS, trombone, were invited to perform with the Kansas Intercollegiate Orchestra, held in conjunction with the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop in Wichita. Stevermer and Thoennes are students of Michael Davidson, Associate Professor of Trombone. Meiller is a student of Paul Stevens, Associate Professor of Horn. Funk is a student of Margaret Marco, Associate Professor of Oboe.

eRIN fUNK, B.M.E. student, was elected as the new student president of Kansas’ National Association for Music education-Collegiate Chapter. Erin will represent the interests of student NAfME-C chapters from all participating Kansas universities at statewide NAfME events.

CASeY gRegORY, B.A. student in violin performance, won principal chair in the second violin section for the Kansas Intercollegiate Orchestra. The event was held in conjunction with the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop in Wichita. Gregory is a student of Véronique Mathieu, Assistant Professor of Violin.

WAN-JU HO, D.M.A. student in piano performance and alumnus DANIEL CHIA-TE LIU, D.M.A. in piano performance ‘13, were

awarded Honorable Mention at the American Protégé Piano and Strings Competition. As a result of their win,

MATTHeW O. SMITH, Associate Director of Bands, conducted the Symphonic Band at the KMEA In-Service Workshop in Wichita, KS on Feb. 27. Guest conductors included Paul Popiel, director of bands, and Sharon Toulouse, assistant director of bands. The repertoire included the world premiere of James Barnes’ Samba Picante for flute and band, featuring soloist Sarah Frisof, Assistant Professor of Flute.

MARIANA fARAH, Associate Director of Choral Activities, conducted the Women’s Chorale at the KMEA In-Service Workshop in Wichita, KS on Friday, Feb. 28 in the Century II Concert Hall. The concert program included “The Snow” and “Fly, Singing Bird” from Edward Elgar’s Two Part Songs op. 26, Ständchen, op. 135 by Franz Schubert, and Saci Pererê by Ernani Aguiar.

MeLISSA gRADY, Ph.D. student in music education, gave a presentation entitled “Effects of Nonverbal Gestures Exhibited By Multiple Conductors on Acoustical, Visual, and Psychoacoustical Measures of Choral Music Making: A Collective Case Study.”

they will make their Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall in New York City on Sun. April 20. Both are current or former students of Scott McBride Smith, Cordelia Brown Murphy Professor of Piano Pedagogy.

BRIAN MILLeR, M.M. student in music theory, was accepted into the graduate program in music theory at Yale University, beginning in fall of 2014. The offer comes with five years of guaranteed funding.

MASON TYLeR, D.M.A. student in trumpet performance, performed seven concerts with the Kansas City Symphony in February 2014, in programs that included works by Saint-Saens and Elgar. Tyler is a student of Steve Leisring, Associate Professor of Trumpet.

THe WAKARUSA TRIO, comprised of PUYIN BAI, M.M. student in clarinet performance, KAI YIN CRYSTAL LAM, D.M.A. student in piano performance and pedagogy, and SHOKHRUKH SADIKOV, M.M. student in viola performance and conducting, was awarded First Place in the American Protégé Piano and Strings Competition. As a result of their first place win, they will make their Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall in New York City on Sat. May 24.

The Trio also received third place in the Chamber Music foundation of New england’s Sixth International Chamber Music ensemble Competition finals held March 9 in Boston, MA in the Boston University School of Music Concert Hall.

Bai is a student of Stephanie Zelnick, Associate Professor of Clarinet. Lam

is a student of Scott McBride Smith, Cordelia Brown Murphy Professor of Piano Pedagogy. Sadikov is a student of Peter Chun, Associate Professor of Viola.

Alumni NEWSDANIeL CHIA-Te LIU, D.M.A. in piano performance ‘13, was awarded First Place in the American Protégé Concerto Competition -

professional musician category. As a result of the win, he will perform in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Sat. Dec. 20.

WILLIAM MUÑOZ-APONTe, D.M.A. in trumpet performance ‘13, was invited to Puerto Rico in February to perform 1st trumpet with the Puerto Rico Symphony in performances of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring during the annual Casals Festival.

JĀNIS PORIeTIS, D.M.A. in trumpet performance ‘13, is currently

in Riga, Latvia, where he performs as principal trumpet with the Sinfonietta Riga, and is a member of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. He also serves on the faculty at the Josop Vitols Latvian Academy of Music.
