EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: DAVID COBURNCongratulations to David Coburn, paint shop supervisor, on being selected as our March 2018 winner (pictured above along with Executive Vice Chancellor Dr . Kennard Brown (left), Emile J . David (far right), associate vice chancellor, and Kenneth Bradshaw (right), director of facilities) . David’s nomination specifically outlined how he has gone above and beyond with the multiple paint projects he manages daily . During the recent painting of the GEB exterior, David worked with the contractor to point out several safety issues and helped remedy the contractors’ deficiencies with scaffolding issues, even though the scaffolding was not his responsibility . Lately, there has been an increase in the amount of in-house construction work and he has done a really great job of managing the workload for his department . He personally works overtime hours along with his staff to ensure special projects are completed, such as the GEB elevators, given the project couldn’t be done during the work hours . These projects move along smoother and workers perform better when he is present and providing guidance . David always has a calm, steady demeanor, even when the amount of work seem overwhelming, which is needed in his role as paint shop supervisor .

Thank you David, for taking pride in your work and your department, always coming through with a great-looking finished product and for doing your best every day here on campus .

FACILITIES ADMINISTRATION SPOTLIGHT

CAMPUS PROJECTS, EMPLOYEES AND EVENTSCOLEMAN BREAK ROOM AND LOCKER ROOM Laura Mooney, Project Manager

The Coleman break and locker room project is complete . The old sink/stove combo, water fountain, vanities, locker and showers have been removed . They were replaced with new cabinets/sink and counter top, new bottle filler water fountain, and new furniture . The locker rooms also received new vanities, lockers and showers . Facilities staff that worked on the project: tuck pointers, carpenters, mill work shop, plumbers, electricians, and painters along with an outside vendor for furniture .

CUSTODIAL DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT Ursela Howell, Dunn Dental Custodial Foreman The custodial staff at Dunn Dental welcomes Osman Noor to the night crew . This team consistently accomplishes their goals and are to show appreciation for their dedication and hard work, their foreman provides a potluck lunch . Pictures below are from detailed floor cleaning and shining during spring break in their building . Keep up the great work team!

RESPIRABLE CRYSTALLINE SILICA TRAINING March 2018 Over forty facilities personnel received training on OSHA rules on respirable crystalline silica . Training was facilitated by Mr . Tim Wallin, safety director, Flintco (Memphis area) and an OSHA certified outreach trainer . Workers must be trained when assigned to a position involving exposure to silica . There is no annual refresher training requirement, but training must be provided often to ensure workers know and understand crystalline silica hazards and the protections available in their workplace . As a result of training, each employee covered by the general industry rules must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in at least the following: health hazards associated with exposure and specific workplace tasks that could result in exposure to crystalline silica; specific measures the employer has implemented to protect employees from exposure to crystalline silica, including engineering controls, work practices, and respirators to be used; and the purpose and a description of the medical surveillance program .

FIRE PUMP INSTALLATION AND TESTING Hyman Building

Take a look at pictures below from the recent testing of the new fire pump at the Hyman building . Under the direction of Campus Safety, a new fire pump was installed to enhance the safety and protection of the property and its occupants . The pump provides water flow at a higher pressure to existing hose standpipes and negates the need for independent fire truck hook up to the building . Scott Adams, fire safety officer, provided overall project management for the installation which also included working with Memphis Light Gas & Water, the State Fire Marshall and other resources to install a new water line from the street to the building for the pump . This is also a part of a larger project to install a fully qualified fire alarm system throughout the building .

MEET THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND SAFETY OFFICE TEAM Scott Campbell, Safety Officer

The Safety Team, under the leadership of the Scott Campbell, safety officer (pictured left), is responsible for managing and providing oversight of the safety and emergency management programs institutionally for the UTHSC Campus .

Scott’s team includes Scott Adams (right), fire safety officer and Sharon Anderson (center), environmental specialist . The Safety Office responsibilities include policy development, accident investigations, workplace safety inspections, environmental compliance, fire/life safety training, emergency management

functions, and regulatory compliance . Campus Safety is committed to setting high standards and becoming one of the safest places to work in Memphis . Campbell’s vision for his team is to provide a safe environment for campus faculty, staff and students through leadership, excellent customer relations and fostering a positive attitude related to safety . Further, Campbell wants to establish a culture of individual accountability, expectation for all employees to adhere to safety standards, and actively participate in and support the advancement of our safety practices . MICAH FORD, FACILITIES PLUMBER JOINS HURRICANE HARVEY DISASTER RELIEF EFFORT February 2018 One of our very own facilities employees, Micah Ford helped with relief efforts this past February . Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas August, 2017 and Micah looked forward to being able to help survivors get back to some normalcy in their lives . Utilizing skills he developed over the years here at UTHSC, he knew he could benefit those in need during this effort . Upon arriving with the team he traveled with, they received instructions, a safety discussion, and a spiritual talk for encouragement . Ford witnessed people with a strength of not giving up which he said was empowering to see . He also made lifelong friends while he was there . The very last picture includes an 82 year old woman who had a house made available to her for shelter . She was gracious enough to leave the key with Micah’s team to use whenever they needed to rest, use the facilities and even welcomed them to any food she had . Ford explained how amazing it was to witness someone so grateful during her own trying times . The lifelong benefit of being there for those in need, the experience and the friendships gained is something he would do all over again, given the opportunity,

The Facilities Administration department at UTHSC has the overall responsibility of all facilities activities, including basic operations, buildings systems maintenance, logistics, grounds, transportation, custodial services and continuous maintenance of the Health Science Center of The University of Tennessee

KEY AND LOCK CONTROL MANAGEMENT Key and lock control management is under Facilities Administration . If you need to turn in, transfer, have new keys issued, or have locksmithing needs do the following: 1) Complete a request form found on the facilities website under the key control tab (https://www.uthsc.edu/facilities/key-control.php). 2) Attach the form to an Archibus work order request (link found at the bottom of each page of Facilities website) .

We are located in the Physical Plant Building (room 224) . Office hours are 7:45 am – 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday . For further assistance, please call 901 .448 .4001 .

OUR MISSIONThe Facilities Services Department is responsible for the basic operation and continuous maintenance of the physical properties of The University of Tennessee Health Science Center .

TRAINING NEWS - BENEFICIARIES MATTER; KNOW THE END AT THE BEGINNING Facilitators: Gina Curry and Debbie Jackson Thank you to the HR team members, Gina Curry and Debbie Jackson for training our employees on the importance of beneficiaries . Trainings were held on March 26, 27, and 28 .

We appreciate them taking time out of their busy schedule to train the facilities organization on important life decisions that matter . Trainings covered details about designating a beneficiary prior to death . It is important decisions such as these that give you peace of mind and help to secure your family’s future in the event of an employee’s or a covered family member’s death .

We appreciate the time and effort to accommodate the entire facilities organization (200+ employees) various shift times .
