Class of 2013 Inaugural Gift to College
At the Honors & Awards Convocation on Mary 30, Justin Griner and Grayson Peek presented Dean Chisholm-Burns with
a check for $1,117 on behalf of the Class of 2013. The Dean thanked the class for “the College of Pharmacy's Inaugural
Graduation Class Gift. You have started the tradition of the graduation class giving a gift made collectively from
individual gifts within one class, and for that I am very much grateful. I know this is something we talked about, but you
actually made it happen. I know the personal sacrifices and courage it takes to start new trends; thus, you must believe I
not only cherish your generosity but also your dedication/commitment to successfully implementing this monumental
program in the college's history.”
2013 PhD Graduate
Hao Wu is the College of Pharmacy’s only spring 2013 PhD graduate.
His advisor is Ram I. Mahato, PhD, and his research is “Gene Therapy
and Stem Cell Therapy to Improve the Outcome of Human Islet
Transplantation.”

Student Pharmacist Leadership Retreat
On May 8-9, 2013, thirty-five
College of Pharmacy student
leaders took part in the 6th
Annual Student Leadership
Retreat. The agenda for the
first day of the retreat began
with a discussion of leading
from the front, middle, and
behind; strength-based
leadership; and dysfunctions of
a team: delegation and
accountability by Dr. Stephanie
Phelps. Dr. David Rogers
discussed vision and goals
setting and Dr. Andrea Franks
discussed managing
imbalance. Student
pharmacists learned about
their and others’ strengths and discovered how individuals can work together on projects utilizing their talents, rather
than focusing on their weaknesses. Day one ended with a wine tasting and at the home of Dr. Cathy Crill.
On the second day of the retreat, student pharmacists came together in groups to learn about leadership roles. Dr.
Peter Chyka discussed “How to Run a Meeting,” Dr. Todd Bess talked about “LIFO,” and Dr. Phelps enlightened students
with “Conflict and its Resolution (Emotional intelligence)”.

International Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences 2012-2013
Thirty-two UT COP student pharmacists had the opportunity to take part in an international APPE this year, traveling to
countries across the globe. Student pharmacists learned about pharmacy practice, culture and people of Manchester
and London, England; Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen and Mahasarkham, Thailand; Australia, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, New
Zealand, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and Turkey. The international rotation program has been in place for over 20 years.
Mary Maxwell Lister and Brooke Crocker, Istanbul, Turkey. “Mary
Margaret and I had an incredible time in Istanbul, Turkey. It was
the experience of a lifetime, but we were most impressed with the
people we met. We were constantly met by such hospitality and
kindness. We loved seeing the historical artifacts and landmarks,
but we were more impacted by the friendships we made.”
Lindsey Wells and Whitney Elliott, Auckland, New
Zealand. “The pharmacists and students we met in New
Zealand were so hospitable, and the country has to be
one of the most beautiful places on earth! It was a once
in a lifetime experience!”
"Although challenging on many different levels, the
opportunity to visit Lyon, France to observe European
pharmacy practice, learn about the French culture, and enjoy
some amazing food was an opportunity of a lifetime. The
international rotation experience was extremely unique, and
I am extremely grateful to have had this educational
opportunity."

International Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences 2012-2013 – continued
Lauren Eaves-Bailey and Kelly Massey,
Thailand. “Kelly and I traveled to Chaing Mai
together and then Khon Kaen. We had such an
amazing time while we were there. The people
and food were amazing. We learned that
pharmacy in Thailand is very similar to the US
in the hospitals, but the medications were free.
In the community setting, many Rx
medications are OTC. It was a great experience
and we would highly recommend it to
anyone!”
Brandon Sipe in Paris, France
Marisa Campbell and Coral Iserhienrhien, London,
England. “Our rotation was based in London for the
month, but we spent the weekends traveling Europe.
We visited Paris, France, and Barcelona, Spain. Best
part of the trip: the whole experience of visiting new
places and different cultures. Worst part of the trip:
Coral lost her passport in Barcelona airport, but
thankfully we both made it home safely.”

and I met up with Thad McGinnis and
Jacob Stout in Thailand. International
Rotation in Thailand was a once in a
lifetime opportunity. It allowed me to
experience a culture vastly different than
my own while at the same time getting a
glimpse into their strife to improve
pharmacy in their country.“

International Advance Pharmacy Practice Experiences 2012-2013 – continued
Jocasta Gee, Hiroshima, Japan. “My
experience in Japan was truly life
changing. It was amazing to see a society
that's mission is focused on peace and
unity. They are a "We" society and not a
"Me" society. We were also met with
kindness and respect despite the
language barrier. Our preceptors,
student guides, and the people of Japan
welcomed us with open arms. I enjoyed
learning and understanding the
differences between pharmacy practice
in Japan and America. During our time in
Japan we traveled to several cities,
including Hiroshima, Kyoto, Tokyo,
Nagoya, Kobe, Osaka, Miyajima, and
many more. We had the opportunity to
visit different pharmacy schools,
hospitals, castles and shrines. It was an
overall amazing experience.”

Government Advanced Practice Experiences 2012-2013
As part of the diverse pharmacy pratice experiences offered by UT COP, 45 students had the opportunity to participate
in one of several different government rotations. The program began in 2005 and has since expanded to include more
sites. Student pharmacists travel across the United States to provide patient care as part of the Indian Health Service
(IHS) program in Arizona and Wyoming , the United States Air Force in Alaska, and the United States Army in Kentucky.
While on rotation, students learn about government-based pharmacy practice and the culture of the patients they
serve.
“My rotation was in Sells, Arizona. It provided the
opportunity to see the Indian Health Service in action
along with plenty of counseling and educational activities.
By living on the reservation, I was exposed to the culture,
foods, and language of the Tohono O'odham. Overall, it
highlighted the importance of being culturally competent
within health care. Nighttime observing at Kitt Peak
National Observatory, a tour of Biosphere 2, and an
educational visit to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
are a few of the things I was able to do on my weekends,”
Renee Berube (and cactus).

2012-2013 AWARDS, PUBLICATIONS AND PRESENTATIONS
UTHSC Healthcare Challenge
Students who participated in the Health Care Challenge 2013 were recognized at an awards banquet on March 27, 2013.
They were joined by faculty advisors, UTHSC administrators, and Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA)
representatives. Alicia Dorsey, PhD, associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and director of Interprofessional
Education and Clinical Simulation, presided over the event.
To participate in the Health Care Challenge, students form teams and compete for cash prizes. Each team selects an
underserved group in the Memphis area and comes up with a plan to address that group’s health-related needs. In
addition to helping with the health needs of a population, the competition also strengthens interprofessional
understanding and collaboration among future health professionals.
Now in its second year, nearly 200 students have participated in the Health Care Challenge, developing and/or
implementing a wide array of community-based, health-related initiatives. Students from each of UTHSC’s colleges
participated on nine teams guided by 23 faculty advisors. After close consideration and discussion, a panel of judges
selected five teams for the final round. Judges were very impressed with the thoughtfulness, creativity and effort that
went into the proposals.
All of the finalists and their advisors were recognized during the awards ceremony. The members of the fourth and fifth
ranked teams each received $50 iTunes cards. Members of the third, second and first ranked teams received cash
awards of $300, $500 and $1000, respectively. The finalist teams presented summaries of their proposals at the
ceremony.
