Crossing the Line is a platform for transformation. A festival of new work that enables all of us to re-imagine the way we exist in the world, the way we look at the world, and the way we sense and experience the world. Crossing the Line works with artists who, perhaps, have their origins in more traditional or specific disciplinary practices like dance, music, film, visual arts, and cuisine; but who, by re-inventing their relationships to those practices, are completely transforming the practices themselves.

Conceived to focus on vibrant new works by a diverse range of artists working in France and New York, Crossing the Line is initiated and produced by FIAF in partnership with leading New York cultural institutions.

Whether by performing shopping, watching sounds, composing films, or reading movements, we invite audiences from all walks of life to join in exploring, sensing, and tasting a unique collection of outstanding new works and experiences—all while discovering new revelations with each of these truly extraordinary artists.

Marie MaillardWall 0909Sunday, August 30– Saturday, September 26Luxe Gallery Celebrated artist Marie Maillard comes to the Luxe Gallery to present the world premiere of Wall 0909, an exhibition created especially for Crossing the Line.

Maillard’s work combines the concepts of both video and wallpaper. One is concrete, the other is transient; one is decorative and made as background, the other often complex and pithy. In Wall 0909, Maillard creates elegant and enigmatic hybrids, designed to question the relationship between body and the occupation of space.

Maillard will also create a special video installation to be displayed at FIAF in Florence Gould Hall throughout Crossing the Line 2009.

Macy’sTuesday, September 8–Thursday, September 17Macy’s Herald Square Macy’s legendary windows become the site for artists and fashion designers to come together as part of the store’s special ongoing series, Art Under Glass. Eleven French and American artists have been invited to create installations especially for these highly visible showcase windows. This temporary sidewalk gallery will place multimedia displays by these potent young artists in relation to the new, exclusive fusion collection Rachel Rachel Roy. Free and open to the public 24/7, Macy’s windows will take on a whole new life as night falls.

Windows will feature the work of: AIDS-3D, Olivier Babin, Michael Brown, Bruce High Quality Foundation, Alice Guy Blaché, Marie Losier (with Aya Kakeda and François Leloup-Collet), Marie Maillard/Amelie Chabannes, Shoplifter, Visual System, Nick van Woert, and Michael L. Yinger.

Omnivore New York Sunday, September 13 FIAF 1:30–2:45pm Inventing Cuisine: Michel Bras (film)3:00–4:30pm Michel Bras Q&A with Julie Andrieu5pm Shadows and Light: Cooking Duets

Crossing the Line teams up with Luc Dubanchet and his France-based Omnivore brigade to create an entire day of culinary exploration at FIAF with some of the most transformative chefs of our time.

A screening of the documentary Inventing Cuisine: Michel Bras, attended by the filmmaker and the world-renowned chef, is followed by an intimate conversation with Julie Andrieu. Shadows and Light then brings together American and French chefs for live cooking “duets” between Wylie Dusfresne/Inaki Aizpitarte, David Kinch/Pascal Barbot, and David Chang/Alexandre Gauthier.

The visiting chefs will also be cooking at David Chang and Wylie Dufresne’s restaurants on Monday, September 14.

Steven CohenKnock ‘Em DeadWednesday–Thursday,September 16–17 at 7:30pmCPR–Center for Performance Research Steven Cohen culminates his research residency at Baryshnikov Arts Center and CPR with a special presentation/performance as part of Crossing the Line.

Knock ‘Em Dead is an evening of film, images, and live performance that incorporates video fragments of some of Cohen’s public interventions and draws inspiration from the small cemeteries that survive in the “city that never sleeps”. It aims to look at the idea of “motionlessness” and silence in the noisy and actively congested Manhattan city space. In a city defined by neighborhoods, Manhattan’s cemeteries bridge racial, cultural, and religious boundaries—much like Cohen’s own body of work.

Visual SystemA Digital Experience.. .Wednesday, September 16– Saturday, October 17FIAF Gallery Visual System (VS) is a collective created in 2007 whose projects explore the role of digital media in the city of the future. Straight from Paris and Shanghai, the FIAF Gallery hosts A Digital Experience.. . an interactive exhibit featuring three installations created by four of the collective’s artists: Olivier Pasquet, Djeff Regottaz, Bastien Ribeiro, and Valère Terrier.

Within the framework of creating a completely digital megalopolis, A Digital Experience.. . presents different aspects of digital contemporary art, immersing the viewer into a network of poetic and interactive works. A musical composition by Olivier Pasquet (IRCAM) accents and completes the digital universe.

Nacera BelazaLe CriThursday–Saturday, September 17–19 at 8pmDanspace Project Since founding her company in 1989, choreographer and dancer Nacera Belaza has created a body of work that succeeds in questioning the codes of dance and religion with a personal style that mixes beauty and austerity. Presented by Danspace Project as part of Crossing the Line 2009, Belaza’s Le Cri is faithful to her way of life and view of the world, in that it is characterized by its restraint. At the same time the duet, which Belaza dances together with her sister, is overflowing with sensuality. It is a musing on human life and our desire for spirituality, without losing sight of pleasure and enjoyment.

MetamkineFriday, September 18 at 8pmFIAF, Florence Gould HallCo-presented with Anthology Film Archives Founded in 1987 and based in Grenoble, Metamkine (known in French as La Cellule d’Intervention Metamkine) is made up of musician Jérôme Noetinger and filmmakers Christophe Auger and Xavier Quérel. The trio’s research into the relationship between image and sound has resulted in works they refer to as live “musico-cinematic” creations. Through the use of mirrors, multiple projectors, a live soundtrack of tape fragments, and ingenious on-stage editing, they produce and direct a new film live—simultaneously a performance and its document. A sensory immersion that must be experienced to be believed, Metamkine is brought to Crossing the Line in cooperation with Anthology Film Archives.

Julia MandleFabrication of BlindnessSaturday, September 19– Sunday, September 27Cabinet Initiated in residence at Baryshnikov Arts Center and further developed for this special exhibition, Julia Mandle’s astonishing Fabrication of Blindness comes to Cabinet in Brooklyn.

Inspired by the work of French war photographer Jean-Marc Bouju, the centerpiece of the installation is a large dark cloud made out of black military sandbags. On the sandbags appear words from letters, stories, and poems written by political detainees, collected by Mandle, and embroidered during a series of sewing circles in NYC and DC.

Stunning in its emotional impact, Fabrication of Blindness highlights the ways in which art can play a powerful role in instigating change and community action. Special programs will accompany the installation, including new Brooklyn sewing circles.

Bettina AtalaSeason 1 episode 2Tuesday, September 22 at 8pmFIAF, Florence Gould Hall Part film, part theater, part reality television… Bettina Atala’s Season 1 episode 2 examines its own production process step by step, as it is being created in front of the audience. The hilarious and thoughtful work questions the concepts of mass media, Big Brother, and the boundaries of reality and fiction—while offering a delightful critique of social norms and structures.

Known to New York audiences for her work with French performance group Grand Magasin, Bettina Atala will also recruit a troupe of local New York performers for this very special NYC version of Season 1 episode 2.

Raimund HogheBoléro VariationsWednesday–Friday, September 23–25 at 7:30pmDance Theater Workshop

Raimund Hoghe L’Après-midiSaturday, September 26 at 4pmDanspace Project

Performer and choreographer Raimund Hoghe’s work questions conceptions of difference and expectations of the dancing body, advocating inclusive views of humanity and acceptance and celebration of self and others.

Created in Paris in 2007 and co-presented with Dance Theater Workshop, Boléro Variations features the music of Ravel’s Boléro, folksongs, and the soundtrack from the TV broadcast of Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean’s ice-dancing performance at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo.

The three-night run of Boléro Variations will be followed by a single performance of Hoghe’s L’Après-midi at Danspace Project. The piece is inspired by Vaslav Nijinski’s legendary 1912 interpretation of a Stéphane Mallarmé poem, L’Après-midi d’un faune. Revisiting this piece nearly a century later, Hoghe explores the exquisite presence of the young dancer Emmanuel Eggermont in a radiant solo performance.

Maria HassabiSOLO SHOWTuesday–Saturday, September 29–October 3at 7:30pmSunday, October 4 at 5:30pmPerformance Space 122 SOLO SHOW is a new diptych work by Maria Hassabi, commissioned by Crossing the Line, PERFORMA, and Performance Space 122, and composed of two evening-long solos. The first, entitled Solo, will premiere as part of Crossing the Line 2009, while the second will premiere as part of PERFORMA 09.

In Solo, Hassabi performs with a Persian area carpet. The carpet becomes, variously, a prop object, an outer skin, and architecture. These shifts describe the negotiation of desire in a dancing figure as it approaches visibility within the space of a given frame. This desire manifests itself as a changing temporal process, as complex and interwoven as the many patterns in the carpet.

Trajal HarrellTwenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church (S)Thursday–Friday, October 1–2 at 7pmNew MuseumCo-presented with Danspace Project

Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church is the collective and shared title of five dances in five sizes: Extra Small (XS), Small (S), Medium (M), Large (L), and Extra Large (XL), choreographed by Trajal Harrell. This new work explores the question, “What would have happened in 1963 if someone from the voguing ball scene in Harlem had come downtown to perform alongside the early postmoderns at Judson Church?”

The (S) version, co-presented by the New Museum and Danspace Project in association with Crossing the Line, is a solo performance by Trajal Harrell featuring work by visual artist Franklin Evans.
