WELCOME

Dear friends,

Welcome to Extravaganza 2013! Welcome to Anaheim!

We are so glad that you’re here. The Extravaganza is an event…but it’s much, much more than that. The Extravaganza is a meeting

of friends…it is a reunion…it is a time of worship…it is a time of learning…it is a place where the Holy Spirit blows and moves freely,

igniting imagination and creating relationships. It is renewal…it is education…it is networking.

The church has been wrestling with new realities. The world in which we live is changing, and right now we have more questions than

answers. Conversations are taking place about what it is to be a “missional” church. We believe that faith formation with children,

youth and their families sits in the center of these conversations.

Our questions:

• What is the role of faith formation in this new, missional church?

• What are our best practices?

• How do we communicate the love and grace of God to a culture that

• Doesn’t get grace

• Makes assumptions about the church being a place of judgment and not welcome, law and not grace and conflict, not peace.

At the Extravaganza, you will gather tools to bring home to strengthen your ministry. But you will also participate in and contribute to

a national conversation that, empowered by the Holy Spirit, will drive the church towards a new future.

HOSPITALITY INFORMATION

Hello and welcome to Anaheim!!! We are so excited that you are here. We hope that you are able to find places and ways to participate where you will be most fed. This may mean going to a workshop or going to sit by the pool. This weekend is going to give you plenty of opportunities for worship, learning, fun and laughter, networking, reflection and so much more. Take advantage of your time here.

Upon your arrival at the hotel and throughout the Extravaganza our goal is to make sure that your needs are being met. Throughout the event we will have people at the Hospitality Table available to answer any questions you might have. It is our goal to help you con-nect with other people while you are here. We also don’t want you to be stressing out over where rooms are and what is coming next, so we are here to help! We are here to make this as refreshing a weekend as possible – do not hesitate to seek out a Hospitality Team Member if you have any questions.

Here are a few things that are going on that you need to know right off the bat:

First Timer OrientationIf this is your first time attending an Extravaganza, or you are in-terested in a refresher course on what to expect for the weekend, please join us for a welcome and orientation. This orientation will

be held Friday from 5:00-6:00 pm in Salon 1.

Spiritual Direction Holy listening - also called spiritual direction or companionship - evokes awareness of the ways God/Spirit/Christ/Holy Mystery moves in everyday life. An ongoing connection with a spiritual director helps a person, community, or organization notice and respond to the presence and invitation of the Sacred in growing freedom and deepening relationship. To sign up for an opportunity to meet with either Rev. Bill Kees, Carolyn Kees or Beverly Jordan for a one hour session, please visit the Hospitality Table. All have been trained and certified as spiritual directors. The suggested donation for these sessions is $25 and can be paid in cash directly to Bill, Carolyn

or Beverly at the time of the session.

ReceptionsVarious organizations are hosting receptions throughout the event, and you are welcome to attend. Please refer to the sched-ule or the Hospitality Table to find out the times, locations, and hosts of these receptions.

MassagesWe have 10 minute chair massages available for $5. Please visit the Hospitality Table to sign up for at time slot on Saturday or Sunday.

Meal OutingsIf you are here for the first time or you are a rostered person there is a specific meal outing just for you!

First timers: On Saturday at 11:30 am there will be a lunch for anyone here for the first time and interested in sharing a meal together. Meet in the lobby and walk to a local eatery together.

Rostered leaders: We also understand that rostered people working with youth ministry are in a unique position and can benefit from shared time together. There will be a lunch on Sun-day at 11:45 am for any rostered people interested in connecting with one another.

If you are interested in attending one of these lunches please meet at the Hospitality Table on your respective day to walk as a group to lunch. People will pay for themselves. Any other infor-mation regarding these meals will be announced from the main stage and will be available at the Hospitality Table.

NEW THIS YEAR! Theology Pub and CoffeehouseWe have added a Theology Pub and a Theology Coffeehouse to the schedule. It’s our hope to give you a safe place to engage in conversation about theology, life, faith in a smaller group at the E. Meet at the Hospitality Table and walk together to a local place for conversation.

A Certified Family Life Educator for 34 years, she is the principal of Marilyn Sharpe Ministries, dedicated to helping congre-gations partner with and equip households to nurture faith in all the generations, every day, everywhere.

Counseling and Caring Skills for YouthworkersLeader: Dennis “Tiger” McLuen Location: Salon 3Every youth worker is thrown into situations of crisis, grief and loss. We often have good intentions, but no real plan. This intensive will give you some specific tools and a framework to increase your car-ing skills, improve your confidence and be more intentional when you are trying to help. You’ll learn the right questions to ask, how to look beyond behaviors and be clear about when to refer.

As a former youth pastor, Tiger has given leadership and vision to Youth Leadership as they developed youth ministry programs at Bethel and Luther Seminaries. He continues to develop trainings for front line youth workers and churches, and is the author of two books: Equipped to Serve and The Student Leadership Training Manual. When he isn’t teaching at Youth Leadership, Tiger is in demand as a speaker, author and consultant.

My Face, Your Face, The Face of GodLeader: Aaron Tidwell Location: Salon 4The congregations we serve each have identities that encompass a set of races, languages and cultural customs. As a community we often struggle to engage our neighbor who may look, sound and act differently than what goes on inside our church. How do we step away from long held assumptions to form new communities that challenge the walls of segregations and prejudice? Enter the discus-sion and learn practical ways to engage the larger community. You will learn strategies to weave our way into communities that do not look or sound like yours.

Aaron Tidwell is a long time youth minister, who also has served as a teacher and speaker at youth gatherings and retreats. He currently serves at Lutheran Camps, Retreats and Conferences in Southern California.

The Journey of IdentityLeader: Rozella White Location: HarborOne of the central tasks of adolescence is the struggle with issues of identity. Learn how to help youth arrive at a comprehensive un-derstanding of their identity by taking your own journey of identity. We’ll examine how you view yourself and how you fit into a race-culture-religious identity, and then learn how to help youth explore the same topics in a safe, supportive environment. This conversation will be framed using a sociological and theological view of identity formation which includes race, culture, religion, contextual realities and adolescent formation.

Rozella Poston has served as the Minister for Youth and Families in con-gregations in Texas, Pennsylvania and Georgia. For five years she was the Ministry Coordinator for Youth and Family Ministry for the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod. She currently serves as a Chaplain Resident with Emory Center for Pastoral Services in Atlanta, Georgia. Her goal is to help others become aware of who God has created them to be and grow in their love, understanding and compassion of self in order to be in authentic relationship with others and use their gifts to transform the world. It's All Fun and Games Until Someone Tells the TruthLeader: Glen Egertson Location: Salon 5The goal of this course is to examine some of the tools used by fam-ily therapists to understand why people behave the way they do, and why changing yourself changes the world around you. Topics will include family systems theory, how to map a family, why birth order is so powerful, the elephant in the room (why all addictions are bad) and how to measure a family’s spiritual health.

Glen Egertson is an ELCA pastor who serves as the Executive Director of Lutheran Retreats, Camps and Conferences of California.

Going Deeper in Theological Conversations with YouthLTCW

Youth continue to seek ways to connect on a deeper level with their faith in God, but we have a tendency to “dumb theology down” for children and youth. By understanding the necessity of good theological conversa-tion, creating space and time, and choosing topics, this workshop will equip you to continue to grow in this aspect of your ministry.

Chelle Huth, AIM, is the Director of Theological Education with Youth (TEY) with Philadelphia and Gettysburg Lutheran Seminaries and the Director of Gettysburg Seminary’s Youth Ministry Certification School.

Removing the “and” From Youth MinistryCA, CLCR, NR

Family Ministry is what we do as a church not an “add on” to the youth minister’s job title or role. There are many different views on what “and family” means. Jamie will share its history and the different definitions of family ministry, proposing dropping the “and” in ministry. Together we will explore the church’s role in family ministry and how family ministry fits into faith formation in this missional age.

Jamie Travers is an Associate in Ministry in the ELCA with over 19 years of youth & children’s ministry experience. He serves as the Family Ministry Coordinator at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake, ND.

Reforming FundraisingMA

We will explore what has worked and hasn’t worked in fundraising for youth ministry. Participants will leave with a roadmap on how to effectively advance their ministry fundraising.

Mike Ward is an ELCA pastor and a Certified Fundraising Executive, serving as VP of Advancement for Lutheridge + Lutherock Ministries in North Carolina. Mike has raised over $20 million in the last ten years for ministries where he has consulted.

Donna Weigel has been working with the Gathering since 1997. Donna’s goal is to help make attending an ELCA Youth Gathering as straightforward as possible for youth leaders, who are at the heart of this amazing ministry. Heidi Hagstrom, director for the Gathering, feels deeply blessed to serve the young church through the ministry of the Gathering. She wants to be part of the church that is being faithfully carried into the future by the amazing young people with whom she gets to work.

The Value of Short Term Mission TripsST, MSECC

Tim will show people the value of short term mission trips and how the model of discipleship is changing dramatically. This has the intention of creating conversation and reflection on how our congregations currently “do” ministry in the mission field. Another Child’s work in Romania with orphans will be a model we will use to show how the accompaniment model of the ELCA should look.

Tim Oloffson is the Executive Director of Another Child. Tim is also a former president of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Princeton, Illinois. Tim has been the director of Another Child for 4 years and has tremendous passion for missions and Global Orphan Care.

faithformationlearningexchange.net). John works as a consultant

to churches and national organizations, teaches courses and con-

ducts workshops in faith formation, and has authored books and

program manuals in youth ministry, family ministry, and intergen-

erational faith formation. John created the theory and practice of

Generations of Faith—an intergenerational, lifelong approach to

faith formation; and administered the five-year Lilly Endowment

funded project to develop lifelong faith formation in Catholic

parishes across the U.S. His latest publications include Faith

Formation 2020: Designing the Future of Faith, The Spirit and Culture

of Youth Ministry (co-authored), Living Well: Christian Practices for

Everyday Life, and Becoming a Church of Lifelong Learners. John is

the founder and was director of the Center for Ministry Develop-

ment, where he worked for 28 years.

Tasha Genck MortonTasha Genck Morton is the Teach-

ing Pastor at St. Andrew Lutheran

Church in Eden Prairie, MN. She

has been serving there for four

years where she oversees adult

education, small groups, first com-

munion instruction, and their con-

temporary worship service along

with the normal pastoral duties like preaching, teaching, visiting,

and trying to organize chaos. She is a graduate of Luther Seminary

in St. Paul. She is married to Adam Morton and they have two very

rambunctious cats.

Yeheil CurryYehiel Curry received his B.A. in

Psychology from Lewis University

in Romeoville, IL in 1995. Imme-

diately after college he provided

mental health counseling and

case management to youth and

adults with a concentration on

the impact of drugs, violence and

poverty on communities.

His dedication to his church and obedience to the will of God led

him to serve as lay Mission Developer/Pastor of Shekinah Chapel

Lutheran Church in Riverdale, IL in 2007. Pastor Curry was ordained

on April 26, 2009 after successful completion of the Theological

Education for Emerging Ministries (TEEM), an alternative ordination

program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA),

where ministry and education happen simultaneously. Pastor Curry

enrolled in the Masters of Divinity program in 2009 at the Lutheran

School of Theology in Chicago. He is four classes away from achiev-

ing his goal.

Pastor Curry serves as a board member and Camp Director for Safe

In My Brothers Arms (S.I.M.B.A) Camp in New Era, Michigan for Af-

rican-American boys ages 8-17. Pastor Curry serves as the founder

and advisor of Riverdale Organized for Change (ROC), a community

organization that recently secured a 7.9 million dollar loan from the

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to replace Riverdale’s anti-

quated sewer system. Pastor Curry also serves as Board Member of

the community organization Southsiders Organized for Unity and

Liberation (SOUL).

Pastor Yehiel Curry is married to Lashonda Curry, his wife of 16

years. They have 3 daughters, Shemiah 18, Ashirah 15, and Sheki-

nah 14.

NETWORK CELEBRATION

Join us Saturday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m. for a time to honor you, who serve in Children, Youth and Family ministry with a celebration! There will be food, laughter, live music, the sharing of our stories and the presentation of the Tom Hunstad Award for Excellence in Youth Ministry (the “Tommy”). We will lift up the Network and celebrate all the big and small ways we are connected.

The History of The TommyTom Hunstad was a personal friend to many of us.

When the Network was started, there were many all over the

country who were an important part of making it happen. There

was energy, excitement, and enthusiasm. But it was Tom, who was

serving as the chairperson of the first task force, and then the first

president of the Network, who emotionally carried the Network on

his shoulders, calling people together, casting a wide vision, and

making it happen. There was quite literally one point when the

Network was on the verge of fading away, when Tom pretty much

single handedly carried it on his back.

Tom was a youth minister, serving in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and

then a pastor, serving at Olivet Lutheran in Fargo, North Dakota and

then at Westwood in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Tom was diagnosed early in 2000 with an aggressive form of can-

cer. After a short, but courageous battle with the disease, Tom died

just before Thanksgiving of that year. He is survived by his wife,

Lynn and his 2 children, along with many family members, many

friends, and this Network.

To honor Tom, the Network Board created an award, the Tom

Hunstad Award for Excellence in Youth and Family Ministry. The

award is given annually, by the Network. It is not a “youth minister

of the year” award…there are no nominations made. Rather it is an

honor, bestowed on someone by the Network through its board.

We select someone who we want to honor and to thank for their

service. It is the highest award given in the field of youth and family

ministry…as far as we know, it is also the only award given in the

field of youth and family ministry.

Dawn TrautmanDawn Trautman is a national board certified coach who helps people discover their calling through

eCourses, one-on-one coaching sessions, and VIP Personal Retreats. The path to her current calling includ-

ed years of serving in Lutheran camps and congregations as well as degrees from Valparaiso University,

Luther Seminary (youth and family ministry), and New York University (organizational psychology). She is

also a professional musical theater actor, Macy’s giant balloon handler, and author of “Urban Nomad USA,”

MUSICIANS

Dave Scherer - Agape AGAPE* has been touring full-time as a musician for the last twelve years, performing for hundreds of thousands of youth across the US, and in eight different countries. He has recorded six CDs and has recorded with critically-acclaimed producer Ant (Atmosphere, Brother Ali) as well as Chris Brown’s

producer Ra Charm. He has shared the stage with the likes of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Toby Mac, David Crowder, Tony Cam-polo, and Gospel giant Kirk Franklin. In 2001, he co-founded JUMP (Joint Urban Ministries in Praise) a ministry dedicated to helping urban youth unleash their leadership skills through the arts. More recently he founded a youth-led worship service called AMP (All Metro Praise) which attracts hundreds of youth across the metro Twin Cities area each month. In 2009, he received the Tom Hunstad Award for excellence in youth ministry and his contribution to the lives of young people. His ministry was also recently featured in an ABC affiliated documentary entitled “Peace of Bread” about food insecurity in America.

Rachel KurtzRachel Kurtz is a fulltime singer/songwriter originally from Cokato, MN. She travels the country sing-ing about faith, life, love and the freedom we have in Jesus. She enjoys traveling and meeting people from all around the world

and hearing their stories. Rachel has been involved with youth min-istry for the past 15 years. She loves to encourage students with her stories and also see and affirm their gifts. Rachel sings in a variety of venues, from coffee shops to colleges, pubs to house parties, youth weekends to churches. Rachel has also sung in both ELCA and LCMS national gatherings, synod events and has had the plea-sure of singing in India and West Africa. Rachel hopes to continue traveling the world singing for the Lord. She was featured this past summer in New Orleans at the ELCA Youth Gathering.

New City Parish Gospel ChoirThe music ministry is a strong expression which characterizes the New City Parish’s entire ministry in the inner-city

of Los Angeles, Compton, and Inglewood. The NCP Gospel Choir purpose is to minister through various forms of gospel music. The Choir has been bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ through song to the New City Parish’s communities since its inception. Though this unique cultural ministry of gospel music is deeply rooted in the African American tradition, the choir includes a diverse group of believers from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The NCP Gospel Choir is open to all churches in the area, with no member-ship requirements or try-outs. This music ministry helps to support the church ministries in many religious, social, and educational events with its musical array and contributes to the stewardship effort of New City Parish.

Van NuysVan Nuys began its musi-cal expression in 2003. A cluster of junior high confirmation students thought it would be a cool idea to form a band.

Years later, with the addition of keyboardist Gillian, this group has performed at various Western States Youth Gatherings, Synodical Jr. High and High School gatherings and on the stage during the ELCA Youth Gathering for Practice Justice. These are all talented musi-cians bringing a keen word of Jesus to those who will listen.

The Cali House BandThe Cali House Band all met and began playing with the youth group from Bethel Lutheran Church in Cupertino, CA. The band leader is Katlynn Hoegel and she is passionate about

worship and plays a mean acoustic guitar. The rest of the band (Julia, Aleya, David, Jamie, Haven, and Matty V) are great musicians in their own right and have all played with the band for years. Most recently, The Cali House Band was one of the two “Practice Justice” bands at the ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans. Their musicianship is only surpassed by their enthusiasm and love for worship. Katlynn and the band will also be leading the “E Choir” workshop, so make sure you attend as you will have a chance to sing at closing worship.

Network Fellowships are an opportunity to provide support to youth ministers who would benefit from participation in the Extravaganza and an opportunity to connect with youth ministers who share similar ministry foci.

The Goals • To lift up new leadership • To provide opportunities for Networking around specific areas of ministry • To promote participation in the Extravaganza • To promote membership in the Network • To promote awareness of the Network’s dynamic partnership with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans

THRIVENT FELLOWSHIP

EXTRAVAGANZA: The annual conference of the ELCA Youth Ministry Network that focuses on renewal, education, and con-

nection for adults who work with young people in congregations.

SYMBOL: Synod Youth Ministry Band of Leaders. The network of synod staff people who have youth and family (and sometimes

children’s) ministry as a part of their job responsibility.

THE NETWORK BOARD: The group of 7 people who serve on the Network Board of Directors. They provide leadership

and vision for the Network. They serve 3-year terms (renewable once) and every year, 2-3 member’s terms end.

REGIONAL FACILITATORS: Frequently known as RF’s. There are 9 RF’s plus an RF Coach. One RF is elected from each

region to a 3-year term. Their task is to provide a communications link from the Network to the regions from which they are elected

and to feed information back up the pipeline. They also provide regional and local leadership.

REGIONAL TEAMS: Each RF has a team with one individual from each synod in their region. Each regional team works to

promote local networking within their regions, and to promote the Network there as well.

LACE: The Lutheran Association of Christian Educators. The network of folks involved in life-long faith formation.

THE E-TEAM: a.k.a the Extravaganza Team. The team of people responsible for planning the Extravaganza.

THE GATHERING: Refers to the ELCA Youth Gathering, a 36,000 person event held every 3 years. In the summer of 2015 it

will be held in Detroit.

SALLT: THE SERVICE AND LEARNING LEADERSHIP TEAM: Those involved in the research project

focused on service learning in faith formation. Research revolved largely around the 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans.
