Student Book Award Circus Extravaganza
Incentive Based – Year Long Reading Program
In order to raise awareness and promote reading of the Student Book
Award titles, the library would create a circus themed wall that would stay up
from the beginning of the school year till the award is given to the winner.
The wall would look like each book was the base of a hi-striker game at the
circus. The hi-striker is the game where you hit the base and see how high
the weight can go and the goal is to hit the bell at the top. There will be a
box next to each book for official ballots. The official ballots will be
bookmarks handed out to students when they check out one of the
nominated books. The bookmarks will have a scale to rate the books and a
place on the back to give a short critique. There will also be a circus tent
canopy hanging next to the circulation desk along with a special display for
the books, done in a collaborative effort with the shop teacher, of a man
spinning plates holding books. The shop teacher has offered to create the
spinning plate bookshelves for the library during the first few weeks of
school.
Monthly the library will color in the hi-striker to show which books are
in the lead. At this time, ballots will be sorted and filed by student. Students
with ballots in more than three different book’s boxes by March 1st can cast
an official vote for the Student Book Awards. These students will receive a
special award at the quarterly award ceremony from the library for being
eager readers.
The library will know if students have actually read the book based on
the back of the bookmark. The rating system on the front of the bookmark
will provide that many points for the book read. The title with the most
number of points will be our school winner.
When the winner is announced the library will throw an all-day event
with one hour designated per grade level. The library will invite students who
participated by casting at least one ballot to a circus themed award
ceremony for the book. Students and faculty will be encouraged to dress as
the characters from the books they liked most.
Below are the front and back of the bookmark ballots.
Events throughout the year to keep up interest
Collaboration with Teachers
First the library will go through the list and find which books fit into a
collaboration effort with the Tennessee standards such as The Soldier and
the Tortoise fitting into the Fifth Grade Social Studies curriculum on World
War I. Here is an example of the email the library will send out to the fifth
grade social studies teacher to invite them to collaborate on a unit using a
specific text to enhance the material.
Dear Fifth Grade Social Studies Teacher,
Good morning, I wanted to touch base with you about your upcoming unit of World War I before you started planning. The book The Soldier and the Tortoise is a Student Book Award Nominee and it would fit nicely with this unit. I have some ideas about incorporating this book into your regularly planned unit. There could be a collaboration with your fifth grade classes including some special projects in the library that could
mutually benefit both of us and assist the students with a solid retention of the topic.
Please get back to me about your schedule for this unit. I look forward to working with you.

The library will also send out a mass email to all of the teachers in the
school requesting collaboration efforts if they see anything they feel they can
work with in the reading list.
Dear Teachers and Faculty,
This year the library is focusing on the Student Book Award Nominees and I am working individually with teachers to spread the word and incorporate these fresh, new titles into our lessons. I would like to work with each of you to utilize these books to enhance your coursework.
Students who read at least three of the titles will be eligible to participate in choosing this year’s winner. I feel strongly that this participation will encourage future library use and growth in our students. Please let me know if you see anything from the list below
that you feel you can work into your curriculum as I will also be sending recommendations directly to some of the teachers. It would be appreciated if you would check out and read a few of the books in your spare time.

Let’s make this a great year with lots of activities to keep the students active and engaged.

Circus Lunch/Launch Party
There will be an unveiling of the man spinning plates bookshelves
during all lunches during homecoming week which is about a month after
school starts. Normally the administration chooses a theme for each day and
the library will request that our unveiling day be circus themed. Students will
be encouraged to dress as circus performers and/or animals. There will be a
table set up in the cafeteria next to the completed display playing circus
themed music. As students enter the cafeteria they will be given a Student
Book Award pencil, ordered from the website, and a ticket to get a free
popsicle when they go through the lunch line.
Morning Read Along and Announcement
The following is a short message to be read during morning
announcements to get the students into the library for a morning read along.
The title in the announcement will change every week because the book
choice will be different every week.
The morning read along will take place in the morning while the busses
are coming in and students are getting dropped off for school. There will
randomly be snacks during this time period to get students talking about it.
The librarian will read aloud from the circus tent hanging near the circulation
desk to drum up support for the book being read that week. The book will
change every week. If students want to know how the book finishes, they will
have to check it out themselves. The books used for this program will be
fiction books not being used by the teachers for their lessons.
Students will sign into the library like they always do but in the reason
section, they will label it “read aloud time” so that the library can keep track
of the number of students attending every week. Later we can check the
number of checkouts that book has the week after and weigh whether or not
the read aloud had any impact on the circulation of the book.
“Miss Troulis will be reading to students in
the morning, during bus time, before classes
from the circus tent in the library. Head to the
library to hear about The Worst Field Trip
Ever.”Public Library Collaboration
The Public library would host a book club meeting once a month during
the school year themed around the book the school library chose for each
month. The library is often used for meetings after school and it is not
possible to set up a club during that time for students. A collaboration with
the local public library would allow them to take over during the after school
hours. The school library would work with the other middle school libraries in
the district to come up with a book for each month so they can share
resources. Students would them meet at the main public library for a get
together where they discuss the book and create movie posters for the book
so the students can use them to promote the book at school or at the public
library. This is a good fit for both the school libraries and the public library
because the teen area at the main library is all about the entertainment
industry so it ties together what the school is doing with what the focus of
the public library is.

Passive Programming and Promotion of The Student Book Awards
During the months of September and October the library will set up a
display with a new take on “Book Face”. Book Face is where a person holds
the book up to their face and makes it look like the book is a continuation of
their face or vice versa. This passive programming will be called Book Face
Swap. Using a popular social media application, you would swap faces with
one or many of the people on the book’s cover. Students will email the
library a copy of the Book Face Swap and the library will print it and hang it
on the wall.
After the holiday break the library will set up a passive programming
station revolving around the book nominees. The contest will run from after
winter break till February 17th. No late bookmarks will be considered. The
library will narrow it down to twenty top bookmarks to receive honorable
mention certificates to be given out at the quarterly academic awards
ceremony. The final judging will be done blindly by the administration out of
the twenty chosen by the library. The top 3 will receive trophies at the Circus
Extravaganza event. The table will be set up with a sign for a bookmark
making contest. Plain bookmarks will be set out on the table.
Rules
3 entries per student
Bookmarks must be themed after either The Student Book Awards or
one of the nominees.
Students must have read the book they are creating the bookmark for.
They must prove they read it with a ballot filled out for that book. Any
entries that do not have a matching ballot will be disqualified.
If they are doing a bookmark for The Student Book Awards, they still
must have read at least one book from the nominee list.
