Our academic year is divided into three semesters: fall, winter and summer. The summer semester is not open to exchange students except for the Business French Summer School.

Students should take advantage of their stay in Quebec to learn or perfect the French language. We invite them to participate in a total immersion experience to acquire or refine their writing and speaking Business French language skills.Our Summer School is designed to address a wide audience (students, teachers, executives, professionals, etc.) and does not require any prior knowledge of the French language. A 4-week French immersion program of about 135 hours of training and activities featuring:

- An intensive 3-credit course focused on the four language skills: writing, reading, listening and speaking.- Interactive oral communication workshops- Sports and cultural activities- Company visits: Cirque Éloize|La TOHU, Radio-Canada TV Studios, Moment Factory Multimedia, Virtuo 360, numerous small-medium sized companies and socially-responsible companies.

Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) and Canadian Study Permit are required. Students must begin the procedures as soon as they receive the official admission letter. Transit Visa or Temporary Resident visa from the Government of Canada may be required.

Partners must complete the online nomination via HEC en ligne.Partner User ID and Password: previously provided.A nomination guideline will be sent to partners prior to the nomination period.

Nominations may be done for one semester or one full year. Students cannot extend their stay once arrived in Canada.

Academic Information

In the province of Quebec, post-secondary studies are done part in college and in university. Students from outside Quebec will complete the BBA program in 4 years (1-year preparatory plus 3-year BBA program).

Quebec Education System

In Canada, there is no integrated national system of education. Post-secondary education is the responsibility of provincial and territorial governments.

ECTS Equivalence

HEC Montréal uses a credit-unit based system. Each academic year has a weight of 30 credits / 60 ECTS.

Studying in the BBA Program

BBA courses are mostly offered in seminar format and professors use different teaching methods (lectures, case studies, class debates, simulations, etc.). Quantitative disciplines use mainly examinations as evaluations, while qualitative disciplines put more emphasis on individual and team work.

The BBA is intended as a full-time program and classes are offered mainly during the daytime and week days. Class size is usually about 60 students.

Workload Requirements

Each course has a weight of 3 credits (6 ECTS). Local students take 15 credits (30 ECTS) per semester; a minimum of 12 credits (24 ECTS) is required to be considered a full-time student. A 3-credit course consists of 45 contact hours and an additional 135 hours of personal work for a total of 180 hours.

To comply with HEC Montréal regulations, the workload for exchange students is:Minimum: 12 credits (4 courses, may include 1 language course)Maximum: 18 credits (5 business courses plus 1 language course)

Evaluation and Grading System

For business courses given in French:

Each course has its own means of evaluation. The best grades will receive a grade of A+ or A, and the lowest grades will get a passing grade D (for the BBA program) or an E, for failures. To calculate the GPA, letter grades are converted back to numerical values on a scale of 0 to 4.3, according to the chart besides.

Students are not required to demonstrate any language proficiency. The recommended scores are given as indication only.

Medical & Health Insurance

Compulsory HEC Montreal Health Plan Cost

It is compulsory for all incoming exchange students to purchase the Sun Life Company Health Insurance Plan from HEC Montréal. The Health Insurance Plan covers prescription drugs, medical and hospital expenses. No other health insurance plan is accepted.

Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Sweden.

Countries listed below have reciprocity agreements with Quebec that allow students to be covered by the feeless Quebec government health insurance plan: Régime d’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).

To be eligible, students must have the nationality and residence of one of these countries. To validate their eligibility and for further information, they must refer to the RAMQ website .
