HIGH HOPES FOR YOSHIDABy Michael Adolphsont @AdolphsonRacing

Several wow-worthy moments on Preakness Stakes Day 2017 at Pimlico Race Course made the afternoon

one to remember, but the most impressive rendition of the day from the 2014 crop arguably occurred approxi-mately four hours before the country's best dirt 3-year-olds contested the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

Showing every sign of possible stardom in the $100,000 James W. Murphy Stakes over the Pimlico lawn, Yoshida closed from 23 lengths back in last to decimate 11 opponents by four lengths under a confident and canny Joel Rosario. The Japanese-bred son of globetrotting Japanese champion Heart's Cry represents the latest possible luminary for both his Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and some of the most prominent and progressive racing interests in the country.

A grandson of U.S. Horse of the Year Sunday Silence—Japan's most influential stallion and American breeding's greatest "one who got away"—Yoshida won for the second time in three starts and jumped from the maiden ranks to stakes company with ease as the betting public's second choice. Owned by WinStar Farm and SF Racing Group in partnership with China Horse Club International, the flashy bay colt now prepares for another ascension in class, the $1.2 million Belmont Derby Invitational (G1T) July 8 at Belmont Park.

"That's what we're aiming toward," Mott said. "He's been working well and we are very happy with

everything so far. We knew he was very talented when we got him from WinStar (Farm) and he's continued to show that. He broke his maiden on the front end and of course came from behind at Pimlico, splitting the field and finishing with a good turn of foot. He has shown versatility and has a great deal of promise, even though he's not well-seasoned. We are optimistic about him and I'm confident that he's a good, talented horse."

Already showing enough potential to draw comparisons to previous top Mott turf horses, the $765,160 purchase from the 2015 JRHA yearling and weanling sale has continued to work impressively since his Baltimore outing, including a near-bullet half-mile in :49.05 on Belmont's dirt training track Jun. 18 and a smart five-furlong turf drill in 1:01.65 at said Elmont, N.Y. oval Jun. 26.

"Paradise Creek is the first to jump to mind if you want to compare," Mott continued. "Also, when we put Tourist on the grass, we saw something similar and at the end of the day he turned out to be a Breeders' Cup winner."

The 1994 Eclipse Award champion turf horse Paradise Creek, like Heart's Cry, was a heartbreaking nose runner-up in the Japan Cup—the richest race in the world at the time. He was part of an influx of top American runners to join the Japanese stallion ranks in the 1990s that also included Sunday Silence, Brian's Time, and Forty Niner. Yoshida is part of an effort to return some of that blood to American pedigrees.

"He's a beautiful horse with tremendous balance, and we love his pedigree," said Elliott Walden, president, CEO, and racing manager of WinStar Farm. "Tom Ryan of SF Bloodstock and I went to Japan to

look at some opportunities out there and we ended up working the sale a bit and buying five, of which Yoshida was the headliner. One of the reasons we bought him was the idea of bringing some of that different bloodline back to America. China Horse Club (bought) in on the whole crop about six months later.

"He's a grandson of Sunday Silence, who had a lot of fire in him, and this horse has a tremendous amount of personality, as well. The Sunday Silence line can run classic distances, but like him, they don't drop out the back door. They have speed, which (Yoshida) showed breaking his maiden at Keeneland."

But drop out the back door Yoshida did last time, much to the momentary chagrin of his connections. A few weeks after setting legitimate fractions going gate-to-wire over nine furlongs in Lexington, romping by four easy lengths, he was slightly pinched at the start in the Murphy and wound up last, well behind a swift pace of :22.97 and :46.91. Under bold guidance, he sliced up the rail on the far turn, bullied his way into the clear turning for home, and asserted himself with eye-opening ease by mid-stretch.

"Bill and I had a conversation going into the Murphy about the cut back to a mile, and that I thought he would be fine with the speed he had shown, but then he did not break really sharp and I thought 'oh no, Bill is definitely going to want to talk to me after this,'" Walden recalled. "They were going very fast up front, which can happen on big days. After that, he kind of had things his own way. What was impressive is that we went back and looked at the chart and we had him in :45 (seconds) and

change for the last half-mile."I'm excited to run him against quality horses (in

the Belmont Derby). I don't know what his optimal distance will be, but I think he'll get the (1 1/4 miles), no problem. Down the road, we'll see where he lands. Maybe he'll be a better miler or better at a mile and a half, but after just three races, we'll let him tell us."

Yoshida is the second foal out of Hilda's Passion, a multiple graded stakes-winning track-record setter who capped her career with an impressive victory in the Ballerina Stakes (G1) in 2011. She was sold to Northern Farm's Katsumi Yoshida, for whom her son is named, for $1,225,000 at Fasig-Tipton's November sale two months later after winning eight of her 14 starts for Starlight Racing and trainer Todd Pletcher.

"I thought she was a perfect balance for Heart's Cry and the Sunday Silence line," Walden said. "We're excited about Yoshida and we'll see what transpires next week. It's going to be an acid test. If he wins a grade 1 for us and is capable of that kind of effort, I think people will be attracted to that different kind of bloodline and obviously any horse we acquire like this, we are hoping can land in the stallion barn." TEN CITY BESTS COPPER BULLET IN BASHFORD MANORBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

The $100,000 Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) for 2-year-olds

June 30 at Churchill Downs fea-tured a pair of short-priced fa-vorites and a pair of disparate trips.

Tommie Lewis' Ten City and Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing's Copper Bullet were by far the best two colts in the six-furlong test, but one had a clear outside path and the other went on his own adventure.

All that matters is who crosses the wire first, however, and that accomplishment went to Ten City, who came in 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Copper Bullet. The son of Run Away and Hide took command late in the turn, after I'm Corfu led early with an opening quarter-mile fraction of :21.97, and finished off the distance in 1:10.45.

The two favorites broke alongside each other, with Ten City on the outside in post 6 and Copper Bullet in post 5, and both found themselves off the pace early. But Copper Bullet and jockey Florent Geroux wouldn't let that stand for long. The More Than Ready colt rushed up on the inside in the backstretch to engage in a duel with I'm Corfu, dropped away from the frontrunner mid-turn to angle off the rail, and attemped to re-rally as Ten City moved by on the outside, but could never close the gap on the eventual winner.

"It was just a tough trip," Geroux said. "He worked his way up there on the inside and there

was a lot of stuff going on in very a short field. He ran great. He was probably the best today, but the trip didn't help."

Ten City, trained by Kenny McPeek, raced in fourth as the field entered the turn before he made his move under jockey Robby Albarado. He showed a different dimension than his seven-length debut win April 19 at Keeneland, where he contested the early pace.

"He ran well today," Albarado said. "He was there when I needed him and he outran a big, nice horse today. You'll see these two later up the road."

Ten City was a $12,000 purchase by McPeek at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky yearling sale in 2016.

"That's my job—to pluck one out of there... and this horse has a lot of talent," McPeek said.

The winner paid $3.00, $2.10, and $2.10 across the board, while Copper Bullet returned $2.20 and

$2.10 for second.Another 6 3/4 lengths

behind Copper Bullet came Hardworkcleanlivin, who closed from last in the five-horse field to finish third, followed by Fig Jelly and I'm Corfu, to complete the order of finish.

Bred in Kentucky by Phillips Racing Partnership, out of the Rock Hard Ten mare Maiden America, Ten City now has two wins in as many starts and earnings of $98,000, but McPeek can't help but think about the future.

"As far as the future with this horse, I'm really dying to see him run long," the trainer said. "I think we need not to focus too much on the sprinting. There's a very good chance I'll just park him right here in Kentucky and wait for the (Iroquois Stakes, G3) here at Churchill in September." BH

MASOCHISTIC MOVING TO BAFFERT BARN AFTER TURNOUTBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

After finishing up some turnout time at Taylor Made Farm in

Kentucky, grade 1 winner Masochis-tic will be transferred to the barn of trainer Bob Baffert, co-owner Will Shamlian said June 30.

The 7-year-old Sought After gelding has raced twice in 2017 for trainer Ron Ellis—a second-place run in the Triple Bend Stakes (G1) and a 13th-place finish in the Churchill Downs Stakes Presented by Twinspires.com (G2)—following his disqualification from second to seventh in the 2016 TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) because of a positive test for the anabolic steroid stanozolol.

Masochistic will join a star-studded older-horse lineup with Baffert. Shamlian said what happened during and after the Breeders' Cup Sprint did not have an impact on the decision. In the Breeders' Cup Sprint, Masochistic reached the wire second, 1 1/4 lengths behind Baffert-trained Drefong.

"I got together with (co-owner Samantha Siegel of Jay Em Ess Stable) and we decided it was in the horse's best interest," said Shamlian, who races as Los Pollos Hermanos Racing. "We just weren't seeing eye-to-eye with Ron at the end. No hard feelings. I like Ron a lot. It's just a situational thing.... The (Breeders' Cup) hurts, but it has nothing to do with it. I don't hold it against him and I think Ron got a raw deal with that."

After his early years of training with A.C. Avila, Ellis took over training. Ellis, who won the third race Friday at Santa Anita Park with Siegel's Pleasant as Pie, won four races with Masochistic from 10 starts, including graded scores in the Kona Gold Stakes (G2) and Triple Bend in 2015, and the Pat O'Brien Stakes (G2) in 2016.

"I really don't know," Ellis said. "(Shamlian) just wasn't happy with the way I did things. I thought I did pretty well with the horse."

Shamlian said Masochistic will be at Taylor Made for "a few more months probably" before he

returns to training in Southern California.

"He needed some (rest and relaxation) after his last race. He's been in training for a long time," Shamlian said. "We sent him to Rood & Riddle (Equine Hospital) and had Dr. (Larry) Bramlage go over him with a fine-toothed comb. He said he needs about 60 days of rest, but he's going to be there for a few more months probably. We'll give him more than 60 days and then he'll come back to Baffert."

Baffert was not available for comment Friday afternoon. BH

ZHUKOVA HEADS PRETTY POLLY STAKESBy Bob Kieckhefer

John Murrell’s Zhukova, winner over males in the Man o' War

Stakes (G1T) at Belmont Park in her last outing, heads a field of 11 for the July 2 Pretty Poly Stakes (G1) at the Curragh in Ireland.

The 5-year-old Irish-bred mare by Fastnet Rock scored her first win at the top level at Belmont, tracking the pace before drawing off in the stretch over yielding turf. She defeated runner-up Taghleeb by six lengths, with Sadler's Joy, Charming Kitten, and Wake Forest in her wake.

Zhukova won a pair of group 3 events in 2016 and started her 2017 season with a victory in a listed race at Cork before the New York visit. The Dermot Weld trainee is out of the Galileo mare Nighttime.

The competition in the Pretty Polly includes Journey, a Dubawi mare out of the Montju mare Montare. Trained by John Gosden for owner-breeder George Strawbridge, Journey won the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (G1) in her 2016 finale and returned to finish fifth in the Investec Coronation Cup (G1) at Epsom June 2—a race won by

Highland Reel. The field also includes South

African mare Smart Call, winner of the J&B Met in her homeland in January of 2016. After enduring a long quarantine and training setbacks, she has run with enthusiasm in two starts this season, most recently finishing fourth in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot after leading most of the way.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien sends out Rain Goddess and

Pocketfullofdreams, neither highly regarded in the antepost wagering despite promising recent runs.

O'Brien's son, Joseph O'Brien, will saddle Intricately, a Fastnet Rock filly who has not lived up to the promise she showed in beating stablemate Hydrangea in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) last September over the Curragh turf.

The Pretty Polly is contested over 1 1/4 miles for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. BH

GREEN MASK LOOMS LARGE IN HIGHLANDER AT WOODBINEBy Lenny Shulman

Green Mask, second in his only previous visit to the Woodbine

turf, has a class and recency advan-tage over his field and is the one to beat in the July 2 Highlander Stakes (G2T) going six furlongs.

The $250,000 Highlander is for older turf sprinters, and for the first time is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" race for an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) at Del Mar.

Green Mask has been first or second in his last five trips to the post, dating back to last December, when he won the Bonapaw Stakes. On May 5 at Churchill Downs, he kicked away to take the Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes presented by Twinspires.com (G3T) and finished willingly to be second last out in the Jaipur Invitational Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park. The 6-year-old Mizzen Mast gelding has the speed to place himself just off the pace, or can run on from behind.

Calgary Cat is proven at Woodbine, but has done much of his running over the synthetic main surface. He ran well last out on the turf, finishing a close third in the Connaught Cup Stakes (G2T) after rallying wide. Two back, he failed to fire over good turf at Belmont in the Elusive Quality Stakes.

Calgary Cat ended 2016 with a good effort in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T), rallying from far back to check in fourth. He had

won the Nearctic Stakes (G2T) in his previous start at Woodbine. Calgary Cat, who does his best running from behind, would benefit from a strong early pace.

Noholdingback Bear makes his first visit to Woodbine's grass, although he has won over the synthetic in the Woodstock Stakes last season. In fact, he has not run on turf since February 2016 when he finished second in the Texas Glitter Stakes at Gulfstream Park. He won the Gallant Bob Stakes (G3) last summer, but has lacked his previous early speed in his last three efforts, including a seventh-place effort in the True North Stakes (G2) last out, hence the surface switch.

Commend will be trying graded company for the first time. He won a six-furlong allowance heat at Belmont last out and checked in second last summer in the Quick

Call Stakes in his lone black-type appearance. Hootenanny won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) in 2014 but has not backed up that effort, including a fourth in last year's Highlander. He is lightly raced and came off a seven-month freshening to run fourth in the Hanshin Cup Stakes (G3) in May on the synthetic at Arlington International Race Course.

Commute was pipped on the line by Tower of Texas in the Connaught last out after clearing the lead in the stretch. He is in solid form and will probably be a pace factor from the rail. Sweet Grass Creek has hit the board against Ontario-bred company in his last two so he will face a class test here. Don Camillo faced this type of company in last summer's Sky Classic Stakes (G2T) and failed to threaten. BH

DOLLARS & SENSEwith Frank Angst

IN TERMS OF PURSE EARNINGS, THROW OUT THE RECORD BOOKt @BH_FAngst

Earning back-to-back Horse of the Year titles in 2007-08, Curlin won 11 of 16 starts to

become the first North American-based horse to surpass $10 million in earnings.

Juddmonte Farm's Arrogate has blown by that total in two starts this season: victories in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) at Gulfstream Park and the $10 million Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1) at Meydan. In those two starts the son of Unbridled's Son earned $13 million.

Combined with his earnings from last season, Arrogate is North America's all-time leading earner at $17,084,600.

Yes, looking at statistics through the first half of 2017 serves as reminder of how much the addition of the Peagaus, and Arrogate's sweep of that race and the Dubai World Cup have shifted things.

On the human side, as purses have been boosted in New York, trainers and jockeys based there have dominated the season-ending earnings standings in recent years. But Arrogate has helped rocket Southern California-based trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith past their rivals in the East.

When Dubai racing is included, Smith ranks first among North American-based riders in purse earnings this season at $19,498,956, more than $7 million ahead of second-place Jose Ortiz; and Baffert tops that category for trainers at $18,830,403, more than $4.4 million ahead of second-place Todd Pletcher.

While Arrogate is fueling those massive earnings, Baffert and Smith have teamed to win grade 1 races this year with Abel Tasman and Mor Spirit. Smith also rides champion Songbird; Baffert has multiple graded stakes winner Vale Dori.

With just 134 starts this season, Smith has more than 500 fewer than Ortiz. His purse earnings per start are six figures: $145,515. Baffert has had nearly 400 fewer starts than Pletcher this season. In Baffert’s 135 starts, his horses are averaging a return of $139,484.

Pletcher holds the single-season earnings record for a North American-based trainer at $28,576,097, set in 2007. Javier Castellano holds that distinction among jockeys at $28,120,803 in 2015.

This season Smith has moved past Pat Day into second on the all-time earnings list for a North American jockey, and he's less than $1 million away from joining John Velazquez as the only riders to surpass the $300 million earnings mark.

The first half of the 2017 season helped Baffert vault into third-place past still-active trainers Steve Asmussen and Bill Mott on the career earnings list at $259,086,754. Baffert has had nearly 5,000 fewer wins than Asmussen and nearly 2,000 fewer than Mott.

Away from the track, Arrogate's big season helped the late Unbridled's Song take a commanding lead in the general sire list at $15,254,349, more than $8 million ahead of runner-up Candy Ride. BH

TURF JUVENILE SET TO DEBUT FOR CALUMET, PLETCHERBy Mary LaRuet @BH_MLaRue

Top trainers continue to unveil their next potential stars, and Todd Pletcher has entered 2-year-old

colt Bon Raison, a sibling to two grade 2 winners, in a $60,000 Gulfstream Park maiden special weight on turf.

The first time starter has been slated the 3-1 morning-line second choice in the field of nine, with morning-line favoritism going to Pletcher's other entry Channel Cat. Both horses are Calumet Farm homebreds.

Bon Raison is a son of Calumet's well bred, freshmen stallion Raison d'Etat, a graded stakes-placed son of A. P. Indy, out of seven-time grade 1 winner Sightseek.

Out of the French Deputy mare Padmore, Bon Raison is a half brother to King of Sydney, a group 2 winner in Germany, and 2013 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Leigh Court, who won the 2014 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) at

Keeneland. The mare also produced grade 2 stakes-placed Star Hill and stakes winner Barracks Road.

Working at Palm Beach Downs, Bon Raison has been steadily logging quick times, breezing three furlongs May 19 in :37 flat, the fastest of 14 at the distance that day, and posting another four-furlong bullet June 20.

Of the others in the five-furlong race, Gus King's Yeehaw placed second in his debut one start back and Just For Fun Stables' Seattle Treasure finished third in his debut June 11.

Holly and David Wilson's $140,000 Keeneland September sale purchase is the Candy Ride colt Pubilius Syrus. He is out of the grade 3 winning mare Ruthenia, a Pulpit full sister to grade 1 winner Rutherienne.

Others making their first appearances on the track are Greyvitos, a Malibu Moon colt out of multiple graded stakes winner Snow Top Mountain, who starts in Santa Anita Park's first race, along with Kaleem Shah's Irish-bred Kazan, a son of Shanghai Bobby. BH

DREFONG TARGETS BING CROSBY FOR SEASON DEBUTBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Baoma Corporation's Drefong, the 2016 Eclipse Award-winning champion male sprinter, has

steadily cranked up his form over the last month and could make his 2017 debut in the $300,000 Bing Cros-by Stakes (G1) going six furlongs at Del Mar July 29, trainer Bob Baffert said June 29.

Unraced since his championship-clinching victory in the Nov. 5 TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita Park, Drefong was initially targeting the March 25 Dubai Golden Shaheen Sponsored by Gulf News (G1) at Meydan Racecourse before Baffert opted to bypass that race and back off the son Gio Ponti.

Beginning with his reappearance on the worktab May 28, 4-year-old Drefong has posted six timed moves, the latest being a five-furlong breeze in :59 1/5 at Santa Anita June 27.

"I'm trying to make the Bing Crosby with him, that's the goal right now," Baffert said. "We're starting to lean

on him now and he's handling it well."The only horse Drefong has ever lost to is Mac

Daddy Mac, the chestnut colt who prevailed when the former finished fifth in his career debut at Santa Anita in October of 2015. Since then Drefong has been unbeaten in five subsequent starts, including a win in the Ketel One King's Bishop Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course last August. BH

SEVERAL TRACKS REACH DEALS WITH DERBY WARSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Horse racing contest site DerbyWars.com an-nounced June 30 it reached partnership agree-

ments with several tracks and racing associations that will allow the site to use those racing signals as part of its handicapping contests.

The agreement comes just over two weeks after Derby Wars owner Horse Racing Labs agreed to pay The Stronach Group at least $500,000 to resolve a lawsuit brought against the contest site, which had used signals from Stronach-owned tracks without permission or compensation.

On Friday Derby Wars said partnership agreements were reached with New York Racing Association, Monmouth Park, Meadowlands, Ellis Park, Kentucky Downs, Louisiana Downs, and Fairmount Park. The agreements include revenue-sharing with the tracks and horsemen for use of their races in contests at DerbyWars.com, as well as video and data sharing opportunities to enhance customer experience.

“Our mission is to be an innovator in horse racing and establishing these additional track partnerships will help us continue to introduce new players to racing, re-engage others, and ultimately grow the sport,” said Derby Wars founder Mark Midland. “We continue to see tremendous growth opportunities for the sport through contests and we’re thrilled to be

working with more tracks going forward.”Derby Wars had previous revenue-sharing

agreements with Thoroughbred tracks Hawthorne Race Course, Kentucky Downs, and Sam Houston Race Park. Midland said Derby Wars was the first site to establish such revenue-sharing agreements three years ago. BH
