Farm Engineering Industries Ltd (FEIL) is investing $14 million in the latest state-of-the-art facilities to enable it to compete with the
Western world.The company, which is one of
East Africa’s leading manufacturers and distributors of agricultural, forestry, mining, construction and commercial transport equipment, is building a new headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
The new facility comprises a manufacturing/fabrication factory, warehouse and sales offices and showroom, which will initially accommodate about 150 workers
and over the next two years management is confident it will create at least 100 new jobs.
Jit Bhurji, Co-founder and Group Chairman, said: “This new facility will be equipped with all the latest technology to enable us to improve our products and become ever more efficient. It will also become a central distribution base for all our facilities throughout East Africa.

through sub-dealers.All products are custom-built for
clients and FEIL is able to offer a one-stop shop particularly in its agriculture and construction divisions.
One-stop shop“We provide a complete turnkey service for our agricultural customers starting from initial land development equipment through to tilling, harvesting and storage of crops,” said Bhurji.
It has developed franchises with some of the leading agriculture, construction and mining equipment providers in the word including Claas, Bell, Tatu, Hyundai and Soosan.
“Every product is custom built
to make sure the equipment is tailor-made and specific to our customer’s needs and requirements, added Bhurji.
The importance of delivering a top-notch customer service extends throughout the business, which also has a fleet of 22 service vehicles on standby 24/7 to ensure no customer is left with a broken down piece of equipment for any longer than is absolutely necessary.
Due to the vast geographical area FEIL covers and the often remote areas customers operate in, the company also has its own light aircraft it uses to quickly transport technicians when a customer needs help or parts.
Training is ongoing throughout the company and no month passes without technicians attending

Finishing touchesThe finishing touches are being made to the 60,000sq ft warehouse, scheduled for completion at the end of March before it is fully stocked with parts.
The new centralised distribution hub will enable FEIL to bulk buy parts thereby presenting customers with lower costs and also helping to reduce lead times. The new
manufacturing facility is due to be operational by June.
FEIL, which employs about 350 people, is currently split into three divisions; manufacturing, construction and agriculture, with two main bases in Kenya at Nairobi and Kisumu and a third in Kampala, Uganda. Bhurji said: “Centralising our distribution from Nairobi makes sense for us because the logistics for all our operations work well out of the city.”
There are also seven branches in Kenya and Uganda and one in Tanzania and the company has its eye firmly on expansion into South Sudan, Rwanda and DRC Congo, where it currently operates

five years after his graduation.He was joined by his business
partner Tarne Padhaal. They started off by supplying equipment for the farming industry, but widened their remit after being approached by a number of construction companies wanting to make use of their expertise.
“I dreamed that one day I would set up my own business,” said Bhurji, “but had absolutely no idea at the beginning that it would become a regional operation. That was something which was a vision and now it has gone beyond a vision.”
Bhurji remains extremely hands-on in the company visiting all of the
fabrication workshops and travelling the world to learn about new technologies and methods that can be implemented in the business.
“We bring technology from the West here to Africa to make sure that the farmers can get the best out of the land by introducing modern ways and learning what the rest of the word is doing. We are not just about selling machines, but providing our customers with a whole concept.
“I think this is what has kept us ahead of the competition,” he concluded. “If you want to be in business for a long time you have to make sure you have a happy customer.”
