The exhibition Sleeping in a City that Never Wakes up by artists David Brognon & Stéphanie Rollin plunges theFracPoitou-Charentesinto a nocturnal atmosphere, a universe where time seems to stand still. Playing on double meanings, with myriad references, the artworks exercise a certain ambiguity over the visitor in which individual accounts and social conventions coexist.

In the cityof Thouars, at the Centre d’Art la Chapelle Jeanne d’Arc, documentation céline duval has created an exhibition entitled Les choses voient, highlighting the various timeframes of the appearance of the image and its recording. Echoing the documentation céline duval project, the exhibition of artworks taken from the various French Regional Contemporary Art Fund and displayed at the Château stables gallery is entitled L’apparition de l’image.

At the Musée Henri Barré, 2014 is the cen-tenary of the Great War. With the works from the collections of the Frac Poitou-Cha-rentes and the Frac Pays de la Loire, the topics embrace the wider sense of conflicts and their consequences. Or how war can be a subject of art.

At the Châteaud’Oiron, the exhibition Cheese, please ! ;) brings together artworks from the collections of the Frac Centre, the Frac Pays de la Loire and the Frac Poitou-Charentes that all share a common desire to bring a bit of grace to the cutthroat world of art, and a bit of healthy distance with those who continue to prefer war games over role play(ful)… Designed as a series of visual puns, it seeks to present a whirlwind perception of contemporary art.

reg ionThe FracdesPaysdelaLoire will be exhibiting Gerard Byrne. This Irish artist creates mainly films, videos and photographs that he presents in large-scale installations in order to look at the way in which images are constructed, transmitted and perceived. Influenced by literature and drama, Gerard Byrne’s work routinely refers to a range of sources from popular magazines of the 1960s to 1980s, to iconic modernist playwrights such as Brecht, Beckett and Sartre.

At FontevraudAbbey, the recumbent stone statue of Eleanor of Aquitaine has been holding an open book since the twelfth century. This historical object is a source of inspiration for the Oulipo experimental writers invited to rewrite our contemporary history. They explore the book’s potential as a space for reflection, expression and musing. As part of its annual festive cultural event La Cité idéale, Marcelline Delbecq will be giving a performance on 14 June 2014, and a work by Song Dong echoing this theme will be on show throughout the summer.

Etienne Bossut will be taking over the Châteaud’Angersand its moat, alongside an outdoor presentation of one of this artist’s works taken from the Frac des Pays de la Loire collection.

LesTurbulences-FracCentre offers some converging perspectives via two exhibitions : Chronomanifestes, an invitation to French architect Bernard Tschumi to revisit the collection, as part of the events to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Frac. For this exhibition, Bernard Tschumi has used one or more projects by artists or architects who at some point made a proclamation or manifesto, a vision of the city and of architecture.

Moreover, the Turbulences - Frac Centre has called upon twelve artists from the collection to present an architect next to their work, as part of the exhibition Double Jeu. Placed in the position of curator, the artists expressed their interest in the generation of the 1960s, characterized by the latest architectural avant-gardes, the anti-establishment, radical movements to be found within the collection. Echoes and reverberations, discord and clashes between today’s artists and the architects of the 1960s–1970s make us reflect on the close relationship between art and architecture.

Finally, as part of its outreach to contemporary artistic culture, the CHD Daumézon – a public hospital at departmental level – provides an annual three-month artist residency programme. This year the artists selected are Sarah Fauguet and David Cousinard. Les Turbulences - Frac Centre co-organize and accompany the residency programme. The

return on this programme will take the form of an exhibition presented at the Turbulences - Frac Centre.

The exhibition roulez les mécaniques, spread over four venues in the cityofChinon, draws on the power of machinery and the measurement of time with a pictorial and fanciful slant. It retraces a century of research and artistic offerings. The theme of art and machinery runs through works born of this fascination or the turmoil linked to technical progress and the mechanization of our society. The major works on show include Marcel Duchamp’s La Boîte en valise (Box in a Suitcase), one of César’s “Compressions”, Jean Tinguely’s Méta-chaos, or Der Laufe der Dinge (The Way Things Go) by Fischli & Weiss.

The DomainedeChaumont-sur-Loire, a Centre of Arts and Nature, plays host to one of the major works of Yan Pei Ming, a dense painting in a limited array of colours, which exudes extraordinary energy and poetry. This work is part of a series of great magnetic landscapes, mental, melancholy and eternal landscapes.

In the exhibition Expérience n°8 : Entre- temps, with worked loaned from the Frac Poitou- Charentes to the muséedesBeaux-ArtsdeTours, student curators from the Université François Rabelais in Tours create a dialogue between the art of yesterday and today, and raise the question of whether an artwork needs to be beautiful to look at, shimmering and precisely crafted to be strong and worthwhile. The tension between the precious and the mundane, at the heart of their thinking, questions the techniques and materials favoured, the discord between high and low culture, or opens the debate on the possible desecration of the artwork.
