I was trying to think of what to write about this month and thought I would talk

about one of the club's best functions; our picnic. For our newer members, this is

a great way to meet other members. We sit around with a drink and food to talk

about the club - dinners, drives, and whatever else we do as a club. You will have a

chance to meet old members and share their experiences and good times in the

club. Please plan on attending as it is a GOOD TIME! (7/14/18 )

Of course, I want to thank those members who took the time and held an AWD this

past month. Dennis & Maryann and Wayne & Marsha found great new places to

dine. I also want to thank those people who did drives including the Fab 50's drive

hosted by Jared & Tiffany and Scott & Mary. If by chance you have never been on a

drive put together by them, you need to put it on your bucket list; as far as drives

go, their drives set the bar that the rest of us try to reach. See page 7 for their next

touring event! Ron & Linda and Greg & Judy gave us a drive with something for

all. We experienced a car museum, Farm market, State Park, curves and not so

curvy roads, and a good place to eat. Thanks for a great drive, and thanks especially

to Ron & Linda as this was their first planned drive for our club.

I will close with some club business. I held a board meeting just before our June

meeting - the main topic was our holiday party. The board decided to create a

committee for this function. The committee would consist of the Pres. , VP. ,

Treasurer and other board members who choose to volunteer. By doing this we

hope to establish a better party with fresh ideas. I also received an email from

Shannon of Mazda USA - " 2018 plans are not yet settled. May I contact you when

I have a better idea of sponsorship that we may offer? "- So, we still don't know

where we stand financially for our party.

CURVES TO CALDWELL II – SAT AUG 18, 2018 HOSTED BY SCOTT & MARY MILLER

Are you tired of Northeast Ohio’s mundane & boring roads? Then join us on Saturday August 18, for a winding, “curve” filled drive to Caldwell, OH. Aside from the kinds of roads your Miata was made for, this tour has several unique points of interest. After lunch at a local restaurant on Caldwell’s historic town square, we will visit the Baker Glass Museum. The museum showcases one of the finest private collections of glassware and antiques in the country. Over 110,000 pieces of glassware, as well as antique guns, clocks, and many other items of yesteryear are on display in the various showrooms.

While at the Baker Museum, you will also be able to visit the U.S.S. Shenandoah mobile museum that will be on the grounds as well. The U.S.S. Shenandoah was a massive zeppelin measuring 680 feet in length and 93 feet in total height. On September 3, 1925, the Shenandoah encountered a violent storm in southeastern Ohio and broke into two sections and the control car plummeted to the ground. The stern section drifted to the ground, but the bow section stayed aloft, floating for 13 miles with 7 members of the crew trapped. Fourteen members of the 43 man crew died in the crash.

While there is no set admission fee to either museum, donations are welcomed, to keep these places of historical information operating. The owner of the Shenandoah museum is bringing it to the Baker Museum site, specifically for the enjoyment of the Northcoast Miata Club’s Caldwell tour this Saturday. We will collect $7.50 per couple for each museum or a total of $15.00 per couple for both the Baker & the Shenandoah museums. Please send your check payable to Scott Miller, 22739 US Rt. 30, Minerva, OH 44657 by August 1. We will then make one large group donation, to each museum on behalf of the Northcoast Miata Club. After leaving the museums, we will proceed to Miner’s Memorial Park, where we will learn about the “Big Muskie”. This was the world’s largest dragline and one of the 7 engineering wonders of the world! The bucket alone weighs 460,000 pounds empty and when loaded carried an additional 640,000 pounds. Its volume is equal to a 12 car garage. Built in 1969, “Big Muskie” could move 39 million pounds of earth every hour. There is no charge to view this site. Finally we will drive to Cambridge, OH and enjoy dinner at Theo’s Restaurant. We will have our own private dining room, order off their regular menu and have separate checks. The dinners are in the $10 – $18 price range. The tour officially ends here, and it is a very short hop to I-77 for your return drive to all points north.

This tour is a repeat of the tour in 2010 and is limited to the first 24 cars to sign up. Please e-mail Scott at [email protected] to sign up by no later than August 1st. Also remember to send a check for the museum admission. We hope you will join us for this back roads adventure to southeast Ohio.

2018 Ford Shelby GT 350 Road Test By Scott Miller Page 8

After returning home from Spring Miata’s at the Gap and numerous runs on the Tail of the Dragon, how do you avoid a “let down” upon returning to reality? You go to your local Ford dealer to test drive a new Shelby GT 350! Ricco Perea, General Manager of Loudon Motors Ford in Minerva, OH, graciously allowed me to drive the most potent Mustang in the Ford stable, to write this article for the “Exhaust Notes”. Loudon Motors recently opened their new location on State Route 183 just north of Minerva. They have an amazing inventory of several Shelby GT 350’s, Mustang GT 5.0 L, and the 4 cylinder turbo charged Ecoboost. For this road test, I drove the 5.2 L V-8 Shelby GT 350 with the 6 speed TREMEC manual transmission. (You can’t even get a Shelby with an automatic transmission). The GT350 is a muscle car for the track day obsessed. It shares similar looks & interior parts with a standard Mustang, but the key differences are under the hood. A non turbo-charged 5.2-liter V8 that revs up to 8,250 rpm, with 526 horsepower, and 429lb.-ft. of torque provides the excitement. Once you let it rip, the power is astonishing, and the sound is addicting! A race tuned suspension, high performance brakes and all sorts of power train upgrades make for one impressive ride whether it’s for burning tires or racing around on a track or winding roads. The Shelby I drove was “lead foot gray” in color with white stripes and 19” black aluminum wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. It had the MagneRide Damping System and was rated @ 14 city/21 highway or 16 mpg combined. The brakes are 15.5” front & 14.9” rear cross drilled 2 piece rotors with Brembo 6-piston front & 4-piston rear calipers. It is standard with engine oil, transmission, and differential coolers, along with SYNC Voice Recognition Communications and Entertainment System with 4.2” color LCD screen, AM/FM stereo/single CD player with 6 speakers, gauge package. Also, standard is aluminum hood with center vent, dual exhaust with electronic valves, quad tips and dual mode performance exhaust system. Limited slip differential, electric power assist rack & pinion steering are also included with many other standard features. The major differences between the GT & the GTR are that the GTR has no back seat, air conditioning, audio system, rear view camera, SYNC & USB ports and it has carbon fiber wheels. The GTR is the lighter, more track ready version as a result. There are a few option packages available such as the Electronics Package which includes a 9 speaker stereo, Sirius radio, 8” LCD touch screen, dual climate control, turn signal mirrors for $3000. The Convenience Package includes leather trimmed sport seats, 4 way adjustable head restraints, 6 way power driver & passenger seats, heated & cooled front seats. Racing stripes run $475, a blacked out roof is $695, and the gas guzzler tax is $1300. After spending a week in my Miata driving the winding roads of TN, the Shelby’s power was simply phenomenal! When you let it rip, you better be prepared, or you could get into trouble very quickly. Braking is positive with a firm pedal, that does require some effort, but the brakes are extremely capable and showed no signs of fading when pushed hard. Steering is responsive, and the car feels solid and planted under hard cornering. The car is predictable and inspires driver confidence. The interior on the GT350 is very similar to the more basic Mustang GT, the Recaro cloth seats felt firm and the dash layout is very functional. Some experts say the technology of the Mustang & the GT350 is lagging behind other competitors, but since I’m not the most tech savvy person anyway, I had no problems with what was offered. Expect to pay $60-65,000 for a well-equipped Shelby (base price is $54,845). Yes, you could get two Miatas for that much cash, but horsepower isn’t cheap, and that exhaust sound is most certainly worth a few extra bucks! I love my Miata, but the thrill of driving a muscle car that handles like a sports car is without a doubt,

a major rush. The Ford Mustang has enjoyed a long time huge following of enthusiasts and this car is

a fantastic example of why that is true. Don’t take my word, talk your local dealer into a test ride and

be prepared for an awe inspiring experience!

Fabulous 50’s II Tour Hosted by Jared & Tiffany Fonner and Scott & Mary Miller

The weather report was predicting “a chance of rain”, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the 19 couples that participated in the “Fabulous 50’s II Tour” on Saturday June 16th. Joining the group for a cruise back to the 50’s were Charlie & Marlene Rodgers, Jim & Joyce Simmelink, Bill & Rancie Titley, Tim Graham, John & Donna Garsteck, Dan & Teri Cali, Doug & Carol Leavens, Mike & Lois Kerklo, Bob Maurer & Becky Gustavel, Jim & Leigh Lambert, Gary & Char Davis, Bob & Jan Stefancic, Roger & Carolyn Davies, Denny Blacklock & Marsha, Bob & Betty Belding, Denny & Alicia Moeller, Rich & Linda Placko, and their hosts, Jared & Tiffany Fonner & Scott & Mary Miller. The group met at Retro Dog Drive-in Restaurant in Cuyahoga Falls, where we enjoyed a typical 50’s cruise in menu of hot dogs, burgers, fries, cokes and shakes. The management there reserved a section of their parking lot for our group & scheduled extra help to handle our group. During dinner, each couple took a quiz based on trivia from 1950’s movies, TV shows, music etc. Bob & Becca took home first place honors, followed by a tie for second between Jim & Leigh, Bob & Betty, and Tim. All received CD’s of various musical artists from the 1950’s. Each couple voted for their favorite “Best Dressed Couple” of the night and the top honor went to Bob & Becca, which earned them a $25 movie gift card. Second place went to Gary & Char who received a car picnic blanket. Third place went to Jan & Bob, who received a 50’s CD. Thanks to all who put so much time and effort into some very authentic and original looking costumes. We had poodle skirts, period dresses, tight sweaters, jeans, white T’s, leather jackets, Converse High Tops, letter jackets, and couple of very “nerdy” looking guys! It’s the “dressing up” that makes the whole night unique and fun and shows that our club has great spirit! After a one hour drive to the Magic City Drive-in Theater in Barberton, the group was divided into 3 teams for more trivia quizzes. Teams were given a quiz based on 1950’s TV Comedy’s, Westerns or Drama’s. “Team 3” came out with the top score on the comedy quiz, and earned the “bragging rights” for their knowledge of TV in the 1950’s. GO, FIGHT, WIN TEAM 3! Finally, it was time for the movie to start, and we enjoyed the new release “Ocean’s 8” starring Sandra Bullock, about a group of women who steal a fortune in jewels. It was clever and entertaining. The night was warm, the rain stayed away, and everyone sat out in their lawn chairs enjoying popcorn, cokes and movie themed cookies made by Tiffany, Mary & Jared. Yes, Jared has the makings of a “talented pastry decorator”. This tour was a repeat of the “Fabulous 50’s Tour” we ran in 2014 and proved that the 50’s are still alive and well in Northeast Ohio! Scott, Mary, Jared & Tiffany would like to thank everyone who joined us for this nostalgic trip back to the 50’s and made the evening another

memorable Northcoast Miata Club adventure. Who knows, maybe the 60’s or 70’s could be a fun-filled outing down the road?

Museum Tour & Around the World Lunch on June 23rd hosted by Ron Otte & Greg Selby

The day started out with the 90% chance of rain. We met at 11 AM at the Get Go in Ravenna. The drivers meeting was held inside with a downpour

outside. As we got to our Miata’s to leave the weather had cleared and we were off on our Adventure. Our first stop was at TP Tools in Canfield

where we toured their classic car museum. TP Tools sells car restoration equipment and what we saw displayed showed off their expertise.

Off to our second port of call, the White House Fruit Farm, just a few miles away. Our group walked around looking at all the wonderful produce, kitchen utensils and pastries. They have a wonderful selection of donuts for sale and their signature donut is the blueberry donut with blueberry frosting. Our fellow Miata members were treated to a donut and a cup of cider compliments of the hosts, Ron & Greg. As it came time for the group to leave on the next leg of the tour, the members were also provided with a small bag of apples. From this point it was top down as we traveled some smooth straight roads and as well as some great Miata roads to our next destination, Beaver Creek State Park. We took a short break at the park and everyone stretched their legs, and some visited the old grist mill, chapel and school house. Back in our Miatas we traversed a creek over a one lane bridge and up a hill back to some more great Miata roads toward our final destination,

the Shale Tavern and Grille

A good tour hosted by Ron and Linda Otte and Greg and Judy Selby. Ron in his first tour as host, did a great job in seeking out the roads and stops for this event. Our thanks to all who enjoyed the day with us!
