GENERAL SESSIONS

8:15 a.m.Corcoran Ballroom, Salon A

Cross-Cultural Intelligence for Global Leaders: How to Benefit From Cultural Differences

Anja Langbein‑Park, Culture Learning Group

Successful leadership in today’s world requires an in‑depth understanding of the challenges faced by global organizations operating in diverse, ever‑challenging worldwide markets. The differences between the cultures or subcultures of each country or region need to be continuously reconciled while we work with international teams and culturally diverse clients. In our session, we will learn that these challenges cannot be addressed with one common, singular logic or one unique set of cultural values, or even by selecting one value set at the expense of another. What is needed is a way to fuse and integrate these opposites and resolve these cultural and business tensions at a higher level. The good news: Opposing cultural values and assumptions are often complementary and reconcilable. We will discuss the skill set that enables leaders to successfully solve complex tensions across borders and teams and what it takes to become more culturally intelligent.

10:15 a.m.Corcoran Ballroom, Salon A

The Multigenerational and Multicultural Workforce

Terry Bickham, Deloitte Services LP

Mike Tyler, Lockton UK

Anja Langbein‑Park, Culture Learning Group

Two significant demographic phenomena are becoming more apparent in our workforce and talent pools. First, the Millennial generation represents one‑third of the global workforce. Second, virtually every country is increasing its normal retirement age. While the two are not connected, they do create a simultaneous challenge for HR—figuring out how to adapt workplace culture to reap maximum benefit from Millennials while also accommodating a more multigenerational workforce. To further complicate things, multinational employers must manage workforces that are increasingly connected and increasingly diverse, both within and across countries. The speakers in this session will share findings from their organizations’ research and experience about ways that employers can more effectively address the needs of a multigenerational and multicultural workforce.

Establishing a Regional Benefits Strategy for Emerging Economies

Karen Shine, Boston Consulting Group

Andrew Merrilees, Lockton Asia Pacific

This session will use a case study approach to identify how companies might move from an individual country focus to a multicountry regional focus in order to achieve greater consistency and efficiency across geographies that share similar market features and challenges. The panelists will specifically discuss how a global business strategy consulting firm sought to regionalize its benefits program in Asia by exploring carrier, policy, and network leverage and consolidation strategies. How do you achieve leverage when you have only small head counts in many countries? How do you ensure that you are getting consistent levels of care and insurance coverage across the entire region? Attendees are welcome to share their experiences as we discuss the opportunities and challenges of taking a regional benefits approach in emerging economies.

Mitigating Employee Travel Risks in an Increasingly Complex World

Joseph Weiss, Chubb

Steve Page, Lockton Specialty Risk

A relatively small percentage of employees travel on business for their employers, but they tend to be the most productive and highly compensated. While most trips pass without incident, employers have a financial, legal, and moral responsibility to take necessary steps to prepare their employees and provide critical financial security and resources to deal with losses that may occur. In addition to the complex global threat environment, organizations also need to consider the regulatory context where their programs are placed, the employee market expectations of having a leading benefits program, and the ability to effectively manage the program and contain cost.
