GENERAL SESSIONS

9:15 a.m.Conservatory

The Impact of Government and Finance on Income Gaps and Social Insurance

Paolo Marini, Zurich

All around the world, employees’ welfare is evolving rapidly. Changes in labor markets, consequences of the financial crisis, and the constraints on the public purses of indebted nations all contribute to shape its future. These factors also contribute to an increase in the income gaps that arise through disability and old age retirement in both developed and developing countries.

10:45 a.m.Conservatory

Social Security Benefits Across Asian Countries

Honorable Atty. Emmanuel Dooc

One of the priority areas that was identified for the Asian Decent Work Decade at the 14th International Labor Organization (ILO) Asian Regional Meeting in 2006 was “extending the effectiveness and coverage of social protection for all, including workers in the informal economy.” How extensive is the current social security protection across Asia after more than a decade? How has this changed over time in emerging economies? What is the outlook for the next five to ten years?

1:15 p.m.Conservatory

Strategies for Developing Markets in Asia

Mark Kelly, Lockton Asia Pacific

In the era of faster growth expectations with leaner shared services, HR are looking for ways to achieve greater consistency and efficiency across geographies that share similar market features and challenges. Many companies are looking at options of a move from an individual country focus to a multicountry regional focus.

This session will share key considerations when developing your regional strategy. How do you achieve leverage when you have only small headcounts in many countries? How do you ensure that you are getting consistent levels of care and insurance coverage across the entire region?

You will also hear a case study of how one firm sought to regionalize its benefits program in Asia by exploring carrier, policy, and network leverage and consolidation strategies. Attendees are welcome to share their experiences as we discuss the opportunities and challenges of taking a regional benefits approach in developing markets.

3:45 p.m.Conservatory

Mental Health—Does It Exist in Asia?

Scott Montgomery, GlobeTrekker

Choo Kum Seng, Workplace Options

Dr. Mary Jean Villa-Real Guno, Home Health Care Placements

It doesn’t take an expert to accurately observe that mental health issues are highly stigmatized in Asian culture. In a global climate where plenty of countries are taking progressive strides to address the reality of mental health problems and how we deal with them, there is silence in Asia. That is, silence only broken when tragedies escalate to such heights that they cannot go unaddressed. This session will aim to give insight into what support is available and what companies offer their employees in more developed economies. We will also be exploring what role technology is playing and how data/analytics and gamification can help address this growing issue.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS I

2:15 p.m.Garcia Villa

Expansion and the Challenges of Small Groups in Multiple Locations (Panel Discussion)

Grace Wong, Berkshire Hathaway

Noel Del Mundo, Misys

Melissa Ruchhoeft, Lockton Companies

Expanding a business into new countries brings significant and unexpected challenges surrounding hiring employees, obtaining benefits, and setting policies. Maintaining those employees in a competitive and compliant manner brings its own continuing set of challenges as operations and contracts face an evolving competitive and regulatory environment. Compounding this situation is the additional complication of an unfamiliar environment with limited local resources or understanding. This panel discussion will include HR perspectives on the hurdles and strategies to overcome them.

2:15 p.m.Conservatory

Cross-Border Risks

Derek Goldberg, Aetna

Emmy Navarro, Starr International Insurance

Cielo Marte Presas

The world is evolving, and with it trade and businesses are undergoing dramatic changes. Changes in government policy, demographics, and technology have resulted in the growth spurt that has eventually led to melting down of international boundaries and expansion in global outreach of products and services. Markets have opened up domestically and internationally, and now local products are competing with international products.

International business services are generally more restricted by local regulations than tangible goods, and this could expose multinational companies (MNCs) to certain risks when placing their insurance.

This session will discuss cross border risks for MNCs, what you should be aware of, and how you can mitigate them.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS II

4:45 p.m.Conservatory

Emerging Giants—China and India

Jerry Wang, Lockton China

Amjad Khan, J. B. Boda Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd.

China and India together are representing 60% of the population in Asia and 36% of the world. These two giant countries are having very different religions and cultures from the western world. Although they are developing countries, living costs in major cities, however, are surprisingly high. Recent research on expatriate packages shows that Mainland China has moved up to the second highest in the region. India is also among the most expensive countries.

This session will discuss the main cost drivers behind the benefits offered in these two countries, changing scenarios in the health insurance industry, emergence of employee benefits programs and the evolution of technology in simplifying services delivered to such a high-density pool.

4:45Garcia Villa

Business Travel Coverage Design and Medical Assistance for Traveling Employees

Maria Theresa Caraan-Abrahan, Insurance Company of North America, A Chubb Company

Homer Nepomuceno, Mondelēz

A relatively small percentage of employees travel on business for their employers, but they tend to be the most productive and highly compensated. While most trips pass without incident, employers have a financial, legal, and moral responsibility to take necessary steps to prepare their employees and provide critical financial security and resources to deal with losses that may occur. Obtaining medical services in an unfamiliar country is among the most stressful situations a traveling employee will face, and HR has a duty to ensure that appropriate travel medical and assistance is made available. This session will discuss best practices related to business travel coverage and benefit design, as well as travel medical and assistance services from prevention to response.

The Strategic Role of Benefits in the Total Employee Experience

Ramon Segismundo, Meralco

Employee benefits are non-wage compensation provided to employees in addition to their usual income or salaries. These play an important role in the lives of employees as well as their families. This is the reason that the benefits companies provide are essential in an employee’s decision to work with an institution.

With the talent recruitment and retention being highly competitive and the number of new employees entering the workforce declining, employers are challenged to become even more creative in designing their benefits plans. Candidates and existing employees are slowly developing a keen eye on the total employee experience that companies deliver.

What is Total Employee Experience? How do you measure and enhance it in this modernized world? The value of employee benefits in the Total Employee Experience and its role in improving attraction and retention of employees will be the focus of this session.

11:20 a.m.Conservatory

Elfren Sicangco Cruz, DBM, Lockton Philippines Insurance and Reinsurance Brokers, Inc.

The True Value of Expatriate Medical Coverage—How Do You Build Your Business Case?

Lena Tsia, Cigna

Emma Bergin, Navig8

Natasha Crane, Lockton Singapore

The war for talent and increasing global mobility are two key challenges faced by HR professionals today. The same conundrum always crops up; how do we attract, retain, engage, and protect these key resources in a cost efficient manner?

An experienced and diverse panel will share key insights on how expatriate medical coverage could be the answer. The panel includes a plan sponsor, an advisor and a leading provider of global health insurance.

Hear real life stories. Navig8’s Regional HR Manager will share her 3yr journey from a misunderstood domestic medical plan through to today’s highly appreciated international medical plan. Cigna will share examples of how a well-constructed plan protects employees when they really need it.

Dana Cook and Nick Dobelbower, Lockton Companies

HR leaders in multinational companies often have the unusual experience of speaking the same language but not always finding it easy to understand one another. Culture certainly plays a role, but in the area of employee benefits, so does our domestic benefits frame of reference. Understanding the benefits perspective of our international colleagues not only enhances our technical understanding, it can also lead to better cultural understanding and new insights. In this session, we will explore the US benefits perspective, from the role of social security to the complex landscape of company-sponsored benefit plans. We hope that it will help you better understand the benefits perspective of your US colleagues and give you insights into what informs their approach to MNC benefit plans.
