Orientation meetings Orientation meetings in university faculties and institutes are usually held before the beginning of classes. The International Office provides centrally-organized introductory events for foreign students; attendance is compulsory. Study Plan Write a study plan on a separate paper, stating the courses you wish to take. If necessary, you can make changes to your study plan upon arrival. Information on courses For preliminary information see actual course lists of summer term 2014/15. Courses for winter term 2014/15 will be available in August 2014. https://klips.uni-koblenz-landau.de/qisserver/rds?state=wtree&search=1&P.vx=mittel&root120141=18443|17682|18795|17226|18750&trex=step For additional information, please contact your coordinator at the Landau campus, Professor Dr. Martin Pütz directly. Information from the International Office to the exchange student After having received the complete application, the International Office will send the Letter of Acceptance and additional information about the university and the city of Landau. At that time, you will also receive an email with basic information on the contract for student residences and the application for housing. Health Insurance In Germany, health insurance is seen as the most important insurance and is mandatory by federal law for all students and employees in Germany. It is mandatory for every exchange student to obtain a proof of health insurance of a public health insurance company in Germany as this is one pre-condition of enrolment. Private travel or emergency insurances will not be recognized as a student health insurance either. They are indeed often required for the application for a visa, but still they do not fulfil the requirements of enrolment. It is recommended to take out travel health insurance for the period you will spend in Germany until your registration at the University. AOK is one of the public health insurance companies in Germany. AOK in Landau provided international office of University Koblenz-Landau with the attached form. Should the student has taken out health insurance in his home country and if he does not want to take out further health insurance in Germany then the student should present the attached form to his health insurance company at home in order to make them duly sign and stamp the form. Arriving in Landau the student presents the so approved form to AOK. AOK will issue then the form “Bescheinigung über die Befreiung von der Krankenversicherungspflicht” (Proof of exemption from compulsory health insurance). This form will be accepted for enrolment and for visa purposes.

3

This is the student’s responsibility if he/she does not take out a public health insurance contract in Germany: Should the student need medical help he/she has immediately to pay for all costs arising by the treatment. He/she should ask for a bill in order to present this to the home insurance company for reimbursement! ---------- The International Office recommends to take out a public health insurance contract in Germany. ----------

Visa – Residence Permit

You need a visa before entering Germany. Therefore, you must submit an application for a visa for study purposes (student visa) to the German embassy in Hong Kong. This must be done before arrival: All foreigners who intend to study in the Federal Republic of Germany must show that they have sufficient financial means (approx. 500,-- €/month) to be able to finance their study and costs of living. Should the student receive financial support by his/her home university he/she should show proof of that support via a respective letter stating amount of support, period of stay and name of partner university. This letter should be presented to the German embassy in Hong Kong together with private financial statements if necessary. Bring along all these documents to Germany as well!

It is frequently the case that when you apply for a visa there is a requirement to show proof of health insurance. When applying for the residence permit in Landau you have to show a proof of health insurance again. Therefore see paragraph “Health Insurance”. After your arrival: Once you are here, you will have to take the necessary actions to stay. You will first have to notify the authorities – the Ausländeramt (Aliens Office/Foreign Registration Office) of your residence - a procedure called Anmeldung. As a second step, after enrolment will be finished, you have to obtain a residence permit from them because you are staying for more then 90 days in Landau.

This can be prepared after arrival: You will also need to prove that you have a place to live in Germany. Bring a copy of your lease when you go to register at Ausländeramt. Be aware of the fact that you possibly have to register first with University Koblenz-Landau in order to be allowed to travel to further countries. Registration with university takes about one week after presentation of the necessary documents. Visa will be issued within two weeks after registration with university. For further information regarding visa application, see: www.auswaertiges-amt.de Housing We would like to point out that student dormitories are managed by the Studierendenwerk (an independent service organization), not by the University. The International Office makes great efforts to reserve rooms in the student residences for students in official exchange programs. Students receive a copy of the leasing contract together with a bill for the deposit and the total amount of rent by e-mail. The

4

deposit and the total amount of rent must be paid by international bank transfer in advance. The leasing contract has to be originally signed with Studierendenwerk after arrival. The rent for a room is € 1500 per semester and includes heating, water, electricity, use of bathroom/shower and kitchen. The Studierendenwerk has fixed the following leasing periods: Winter term: 01. October – 31. March -- Summer term: 01. April – 30. September Contracts for other leasing periods are not possible! Private personal liability insurance (“Privathaftpflicht”) The German legal principle of liability means that you are personally liable for any damage that you cause to persons or property. Accidents can happen easily and may have costly consequences - you might break a window, knock over a vase in a shop or cause an accident involving a pedestrian or a cyclist. If a person is injured as a result of an accident that you have caused, you are liable not only for material damages, but also for compensation, hospital and rehabilitation costs and for the loss of earnings of the injured party. It is, therefore, advisable to take out personal liability insurance to cover the potential costs of an accident. Accident Insurance “Unfallversicherung” University Koblenz-Landau recommends all students to take out an accident insurance as well. Student Canteens and Cafeterias The student service organization - “Studierendenwerk”- runs student canteens and small cafeterias offering students reasonably priced menus. The student canteens are open during the semester from Monday to Friday and closed on weekends. Finances – living costs When you are planning your budget for living in Germany you need to calculate your everyday living expenses including your food, accommodation (rent, deposit, other bills), books, clothes, leisure activities and socialising. The following items are the student’s responsibility:

Housing Rent: € 1500 to be paid before arrival Deposit: € 300 to be paid before arrival The deposit will be reimbursed when all keys will be returned and when the rooms will be left undamaged and well-swept. Professional cleaning of bedding and linens As well as of living room and bath room: € 100 to be paid before arrival Students have to leave the apartments well-swept.

Purchase of medical insurance: approx. € 480 per term for students younger than 30 years; to be paid at once upon arrival

Charge of Sozialbeitrag (social subscription): € 104,28 per semester to be payed upon arrival.

5

This subscription is levied upon all students and is contributed towards the services of the University such as Studierendenwerk and the Student Union (AStA). It is not a tuition fee. Payment is a precondition for registration.

Personal expenses for food, books, leisure activities: approximate cost € 250 per month.

Those costs of living add up to approximately € 3.700 per semester. Tutors Student tutors will be assigned by your coordinator in Landau. The coordinator will inform you about name and email. Your tutor will guide you around the city of Landau, will show you the residence hall and the campus and will assist you with the administrative formalities during your first days in Landau. The tutors will assist you during your entire stay in Landau. You should contact your tutor before arrival. Tuition The University of Koblenz-Landau does not charge tuition from exchange students.
