Letter from President

Happy Holidays!

My most favoriteist time of the year! Not a typo… I did it on purpose because it perfectly describes this time of year for me. Many may not share my feelings because it means unrelenting traffic jams, people rushing around, crowded malls, and… stress!

But stop and think for a moment… Why do we do it? What is the goal? Why do we choose to stress out year after year? I choose to view the holiday season as a time where everyone’s goal is to make someone happy! Finding special gifts for your list of recipients; scheduling the parties

and planning the goodies you’ll bring; carving out extra time to get the shopping and wrapping done – especially when needing to ship it off for receipt in time for the special day can indeed add a little extra pressure. But we’re not alone in our quest, so why not enjoy the company? I love it when I’m standing in line at the cashier and catch other shoppers’ eyes, sharing a conspiratory smile, connecting and knowing that we’re closer to our goals.

Lots to do, but when you’ve successfully accomplished your mountain of holiday tasks how do you feel? Exhilarated, relieved, exhausted… and when you get that call of thanks from thousands of miles away or that loving hug or that ‘special’ smile of thanks, doesn’t it just make your heart soar and your toes tingle?! That’s the goal! It’s your own special gift to yourself – it’s your return on your investment! It’s not tangible but it is truly the driving force in everything we do in the season.

Now close your eyes and take a moment to reflect on all of the memorable times that have come through the year. It is those experiences (the good and not so good), those choices that have brought you to where you are, right here, right now. Are you able to recognize your ROI?

We, as a Chapter, should celebrate the challenges and triumphs of the year – the ROI that we’ve received has enabled us to successfully achieve:

• A Spring “Jazz It Up” event netting over $15,000 • Full payment of the Hawaii General Excise Tax obligation • EWISP scholarship and ASIST scholarship awards totaling $18,000 • A Clothing drive for the YWCA’s “Dress for Success” program • A sold out 17th Annual Golf Tournament netting over $35,000 • 11 representatives of EWI of Honolulu present at LCAM in Dallas, Texas • Contributions to the Next Step Shelter in Kaka’ako of:

o A $500 shopping spree for the children’s new school outfits and supplies o Birthday celebration contributions of birthday cakes, craft stations, and nail painting o Donation of a new microwave oven, books, and baby needs

In addition, our united branding efforts have strengthened our bond as an organization. It certainly has been a year of FUN! Events, FRESH! Experiences and Success because we were all PRESENT!

Yes, the holiday season is my favoriteist because it reminds me of all of the wonderful feelings and happy memories of times spent with loved ones and to appreciate all my blessings. May you and your families have the most wonderfulest holiday season!

December Membership News Membership renewal is right around the corner. When your executive asks you, “why should we renew our membership”, what will your answer be? Most businesses need to know that there is a benefit to the firm joining EWI as well as the representative. Below are 7 benefits to the firm for EWI membership. 1. Enjoy access to an international business base, discover new opportunities with other member firms, and

increase local and international contacts. 2. Chapter and Corporate activities offer events to showcase your firm’s products. 3. Increase business relationships internationally through access to the Corporate newsletter, EWIConnect, and

an international database listing thousands of decision-makers. 4. Increase local publicity through the monthly Chapter EWIConnect and network through the local Chapter

membership directory. 5. Gain recognition internationally as a business leader through various EWI Corporate projects. 6. Become aware of current business and civic issues through EWI monthly Chapter meetings and philanthropic

activities in addition to Corporate initiatives throughout the year. 7. Have the opportunity to provide quality professional development and continuing education through various

EWI events, programs, webinars (open to all firm employees), and scholarships. Next month I will share the benefits to the representative and to the community. If you want a sneak peak, go to the Corporate website and search for “What’s in EWI for my firm and me”. Aloha! Executive: Cliff Miyake, Vice President/General Manager Jennifer works with existing customers to assist them with telecommunication requirements. Often confused with Time Warner, tw telecom has been a separate entity since July 1, 2008 and provides voice, internet, and data solutions for businesses. Tw telecom has a local sales and operations team and a national presence in 75 markets throughout the United States.

In 2010, Jennifer moved back to Hawaii from Irvine, California when she received a promotion. It was an easy transition because she has family in both states. Encouraged by Tracy Wong, tw telecom joined EWI and provides Jennifer the opportunity to meet successful professional women and to differentiate herself from counterparts who are involved in an industry specific association.

In her spare time she likes going to the beach, attending pilates class, and going on occasional hikes. She enjoys traveling, baking, trying new restaurants, and watching movies too. If anyone ever wants to meet up over a Starbucks or Jamba Juice just let her know. She already has had some amazing conversations with some of the EWI representatives and looks forward to more learning experiences.

Jennifer serves on the Membership Committee.

December 2012

Did you know... “Some basics about EWI®, the organization” EWI of Honolulu was chartered (established) on November 3, 1967, so we are now 45 years old. As part of Executive Women International® (which was established in California in 1938), we are part of the network of 65 Chapters throughout the US and Canada. We are a professional organization, not a club. What’s different about us is that the firm, not an individual, is the member. The firm then designates an executive and a key individual to serve as its representative (in some cases, an individual serves as both the executive and the representative). A firm may have up to three representatives. The representative attends the monthly Chapter meetings, serves on committees, and participates in other Chapter activities. Involvement of the representative is key to reaping the benefits of membership. EWI of Honolulu is fortunate in that we are one of the stronger Chapters organization-wide. Similar to the Chapter level, the affairs of the Corporate organization are managed by a Corporate Board of Directors. There is also a Corporate Office based in Midvale, Utah, which is headed by an Executive Director (hired by the Corporate Board of Directors) and is currently supported by four staff. Both the Corporate and Chapter activities are governed by the organization’s Bylaws. Additionally, the Corporation provides guidance in the Procedures Manual and the Chapter Resource Guide. Chapters may supplement their internal operating procedures through the adoption of Standing Rules (which EWI of Honolulu has). So, if you’ve ever wondered why things are done a certain way, it’s because we must follow the Bylaws and procedures for the organization. We do not stand alone as we are a part of a bigger organization. The EWI Corporate Website (ewiconnect.com) contains a wealth of resources for you. You can access the International Directory of member firms (e.g., look up members from other Chapters), find details on policies and procedures, read communications from the Corporate Board, learn about upcoming webinars/training sessions, etc. These are all available to you at no additional cost. In fact, webinars are open to others within your firm as well and are great training resources we should take advantage of. Do you have your username and password to log into the “Members Only” section of the Corporate Website? If not, email [email protected] to request access. Normally, the Corporate Office emails this information to new representatives. But if you haven’t received your information or if you’ve misplaced it, please send them an email or let Membership Director Roseanne Bronston ([email protected]) know and she will follow up for you. Are you receiving emails from Corporate transmitting the monthly “Corporate Connect” newsletter? If not, email Roseanne or the Corporate Office. Make the time to explore the Corporate Website and take advantage of all the wonderful resources waiting for you. That’s it for now...

Reminder: This corner of information is to help us all understand the various facets of our organization. If you have a question or suggestion for other topics, please let your Board members know and we’ll be happy to share the information in future articles.

Happy Birthday! Cathy Iwai December 1 Allison Sato December 5 Gertrude Yee December 30

Philanthropy Call for Help! MARK YOUR CALENDARS! December 12, 2012 – you can’t forget this one!! EWI Honolulu has the opportunity to “ring the bell” at the red kettle in downtown Honolulu to support Salvation Army on 12/12/12 at Longs Drugs Downtown on Fort St. Mall from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. Two volunteers are needed for an hour shift beginning at 11:00 am, 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm. Lots of business professionals buzz about town and it is a perfect place to promote EWI and our goodwill towards others this holiday season! Please contact Leianne Pedro by Friday 12/7/12 at 808.226.7183 or via email

[email protected]. It was decided that EWI of Honolulu’s efforts would be best served by committing to one non-profit organization for the entire year to raise awareness and branding for EWI of Honolulu. The chosen non-profit is The Salvation Army’s “Women’s Way” – a residential and outpatient treatment program in Kaimuki, which provides substance abuse treatment specifically designed for women and their infants and toddlers. The program aims:

• Break the cycle of chemical dependence • Help children with emotional, behavioral and developmental problems to develop skills for home and

school • Strengthen the family unit (mother-child relationships) • Assist women to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to raise physically and emotionally healthy

children Here is how we are going to help this year! Literacy will be sewn into EWI’s efforts to support our Corporate Literacy Initiative in addition to:

• Story time - modeling this behavior for mom by reading age appropriate, culturally relevant books to the children

• Donating books that the women and children can take with them once they leave “Women’s Way” • Read with moms as they have literacy issues • Lead a Zumba or Jazzercise class on a Friday evening for moms • Lead craft projects (holiday themed) for children and mom to keep or give away as gifts • Conduct life skills coaching on how to dress for work, interview, and basic work readiness • Host a pampering party for women with facials, makeup, nail polish, etc. • Lead Ohana activities on weekend when other children come to visit • Purchase plants for gardening as a stress outlet activity for moms • Support car wash at “Women’s Way” with advertising, washing, and donations
