Notification No: 024/2017

16 January 2017

P4 Level Letter (Term 1)

Dear Parent / Guardian,

A warm welcome to Evergreen Primary School’s P4 family. 2017 will be an important year for

your child as he/she begins his/her journey in their final stage of the foundation years in primary

school before embarking on the orientation stages in P5 and P6. As we embark on this final stage,

we will continue to work with you and your child in reaching his/her potential. We look forward to

partnering with you in this exciting journey with your child!

Each term, you will receive a letter which serves to inform and update you on matters pertaining

to the P4 level. We seek your patience in thoroughly reading the contents of the letters. Should

you have any queries or are in need of any clarification, do contact or email your child’s form

teacher. It is strongly recommended that you call the office at 6368 7705 to make an appointment

with your child’s teacher should you wish to meet him/her.

At the last MOE’s Workplan Seminar, Minister of Education Mr Ng Chee Meng has recommended

3 key strategies in developing the 21st century learner:

1. Joy of Learning 2. Entrepreneurial Dare 3. Strengthening the Singapore Spirit

Joy Of Learning

Our primary school curriculum comprises of three aspects;

a.) the inner circle which focuses on life skills ensures that students acquire sound values and

skills to take them through life,

b.) the middle circle on knowledge skills seeks to develop students’ thinking, process and

communication skills and

c.) the outermost circle covers the content-based subject disciplines.

At Evergreen Primary School, we aspire to value add our pupils’ development through all these

components and customise lessons and programmes that cater to their learning needs to help

them reach their potential.

At the heart of our lessons and programmes lies the key principle Evergreen Primary School

strongly believes - to inculcate the joy of learning in our pupils.

We want to ensure every pupil takes pride in their work and loves learning. We want them to be

enriched and continue to expand their knowledge. At the end of the day, pupils should be reflective

learners and have a sense of achievement. With this positive attitude towards learning inculcated

at a young age, we can be assured that pupils will continue to develop themselves beyond the

school context.

curriculum#sthash.a8k8TAb3.dpuf)

We have a team of experienced teachers who will be working together and with you to support

our pupils. The e-mail addresses of the level teachers are listed in Appendix A. Do feel free to

contact your child’s form/subject teacher should you require any clarification.

Entrepreneurial Dare

Entrepreneurial Dare is a mindset. It is an attitude of wanting to do better, find breakthroughs, of

wanting to innovate. This is in line with one of our school’s shared values, “Dare to innovate”.

We hope to work with parents to instill in our pupils the resilience to preserve in times of failures,

overcome obstacles and succeed in life. As quoted from Henry Ford, “Failure is simply the

opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently” we must encourage pupils to have

the grit to move on so that they can become more tenacious and independent.

At the P4 level, we want pupils to believe that even the most complex skills can be developed

through dedication and hard work. Pupils with such a mindset will pursue perseverance and view

challenges and setbacks as opportunities for them to learn and grow from.

This is aligned with the P4 level motto, “Believe We Can Achieve”. We want pupils to understand

that having the belief that they can do it and have the resilience to do their utmost best will lead

them to the path of success. We want them to look past any setback, learn from it and continue

to move forward. The learning curve from P3 to P4 is steep. Hence, it is crucial to develop in our

P4 pupils the tenacity to withstand challenges and not be demoralised by them. Through this,

they will be able to adapt well to changes.

Strengthening the Singapore Spirit

With many uncertainties around the world, we must refresh our efforts to promote a strong

Singapore Spirit, so that our pupils can develop a strong sense of belonging to Singapore, a

keener sense of social unity and cohesion, and a desire to contribute beyond themselves to help

fellow Singaporeans succeed. Through our National Education and values inculcation

programmes, we will engage the pupils on how they can be contributing and gracious citizens of

Singapore. We hope you can use teachable moments at home to educate your child too.

Parent as a Partner

Bringing up a child is like a voyage, and as a parent, you are the key navigator of your child’s

growth. His/Her development is set primarily at home and in school, and when these two

environments are in tune with each other, your child benefits the most. A number of studies have

connected home-school collaboration to better learning, healthy self-esteem, and more positive

attitude and behaviour in life. Therefore, your involvement is essential in your child’s education

journey. It is important that we work hand-in-hand to maximise your child’s potential in life.

Finally a true story to share with you on J.K. Rowling. She is someone very familiar to our pupils.

She is a perfect example of what it means to preserve. We need to inculcate this important value

in our children especially in this day and age. We need to do our part to ensure they have the

“entrepreneurial dare” within them. Do take some time to share this with your children and do

whatever it takes to encourage them.

J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, is currently the second-richest female entertainer

on the planet, behind Oprah. However, when Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter book in 1995,

it was rejected by twelve different publishers. Even Bloomsbury, the small publishing house that

finally purchased Rowling’s manuscript, told the author to “get a day job.”

At the time when Rowling was writing the original Harry Potter book, her life was a self-

described mess. She was going through a divorce and living in a tiny flat with her daughter.

Rowling was surviving on government subsidies, and her mother had just passed away from

multiple sclerosis. J.K. turned these negatives into a positive by devoting most of her free time

to the Harry Potter series. She also drew from her bad personal experiences when writing. The

result is a brand name currently worth nearly $15 billion.

General Information

Programme / Activity Remarks

1. 4 Ps (Present, Punctual, Proper, Perform)

As a school, we would like to reiterate the code of conduct for our

pupils in this academic year. The code of conduct is categorised

according to the 4Ps: Present, Punctual, Proper and Perform.

As a school, we would like to reiterate the code of conduct for our

pupils in this academic year. Please note that pupils are required

to be in school by 7.20 a.m. Flag-raising will start at 7.30 a.m.

sharp. Pupils are considered late after 7.30 a.m. Punctuality is a

good habit to cultivate since young. Thus, we need your

assistance in ensuring that your child is punctual for school.

2. Discipline and Student Well Being

During the orientation week, your child was briefed on discipline

matters and class/school expectations. Every form teacher had

spent a substantial time to teach, guide and share with your child

their expectations. You can read more about school rules and

expectations in the Student Diary.

Pupils are not allowed to bring mobile phones or any other digital

devices. Pupils who need to contact their parents may use the

payphone located in the canteen.

Please ensure that your child packs according to the given

timetable. Not only will this teach him/her to be more responsible

but also prevents your child from bringing heavy bags to school.

If you do have concerns on these matters, please speak with the

Form teacher.

3. Homework Policy

All homework will be recorded by pupils in their Student Diary. We

would also like to seek your help to monitor your child’s homework

so that he/she has consistent practice and is able to manage time

effectively.

4. Absence from School

We would like to appeal to you not to take your child out from

school during term time so as to ensure that he/she is fully

engaged in learning. Teachers are not required to provide

worksheets or homework in advance in such cases. We seek

parents’ cooperation on this.

If there should be a need for your child to be absent during term

time, please furnish us either a medical certificate or a letter.

5. Mode of Communication

The Student Diary will be used as the mode of communication

between teachers and parents. You may also contact the

teachers through email or call the office at 6368 7705. Please

make an appointment with the teacher if you would like to meet

him/her. (Meeting of teachers is strictly by appointment only.)

6. Weekly Spelling Exercise

Your child will have his/her weekly Mother Tongue and English

spelling exercises on Tuesdays and Thursdays respectively,

starting from Week 3. If a public holiday falls on the spelling days,

the spelling exercise will be held on the next school day.

7. Remedial Remedial are targeted and conducted on a needs basis. More

details will be given at a near date.

8. Whole-School Approach Reading Programme and Speak Internationally Acceptable English (IAE)

Pupils are to read age-appropriate English storybooks and to

speak in Internationally Acceptable English at ALL times to

enhance their proficiency in English (except during MT periods).

Please ensure that your child brings an age-appropriate English

storybook to school every day.

9. Temperature Taking

Pupils must exercise social responsibility and take the basic

precautions to safeguard themselves and their schoolmates.

Temperature-taking is an important aspect of that.

Please ensure your child has his thermometer in his/her bag

during the school’s temperature-taking exercise.

10. Assessments The school uses varied modes of assessments to assess pupils

appropriately for follow-up actions. These assessments include

the Revision Tests, Practical Tests and Semester Assessments.

More information on SAs will be furnished nearer the dates.

(Please refer to Appendix C for the Assessment Plan for Term

1)

11. Learning through Computer Applications

The pupils will be using Mconline and other ICT tools in the

learning process. These tools serve as platforms for pupils to

access information posted by their teachers, share their

knowledge with their peers, as well as to engage in collaborative

work with their group members. We strongly encourage all

parents to allow their children to log onto the computer to access

these tools so as to supplement their learning from Term 1

onwards.

Please take note of some important examination regulations:

All pupils must be punctual for tests and examinations

Pupils who are not able to sit for the tests / examinations must produce an official document e.g medical certificate. Absentees without such official documents will not have their marks for their tests / examinations pro-rated. We seek your cooperation to exercise social responsibility when you child is unwell. Pupils are advised to stay away from school until they are deemed fit by the medical doctor to return to school. Parents should inform the school of the absence of their child.

If a student misbehaves or does not follow the examination regulations during the examination, he/she may be expelled from the examination room/hall and will not be allowed to sit for subsequent papers. His/her examination results may also be forfeited.

All pupils must be honest and truthful during test / examinations. Any pupil caught cheating or involved in cheating any way during tests / examinations as well as attempts to alter marks and/or answers on tests/examinations will be heavily penalized for that subject and subject to disciplinary actions.

There will not be any makeup examination sessions for pupils who are absent from any of the examinations with the exception of Oral Examinations.

Kindly note that for pupils who may have sat for external examinations/competitions such as Music Examinations, there will be no special arrangements made for them. Parents are advised to request for a reschedule of the external event dates where possible should there be a clash with the school’s assessment dates.
